Great Zoo!
A lot of the exhibits are new, so the animals look happy and healthy. I was very impressed with how the animals were displayed, particularly in the discovery zone. The layout flowed very nicely, so you could walk around the whole zoo in one big loop.
I loved the fact they had staff/volunteers on hand to talk about the exhibits and to give us the background on individual animals.
The sea creatures were a tad less impressive, but coming from SF, with the academy of sciences and Monterrey bay aquarium, not surprising.
This zoo is definitely worth a visit!

Nobody goes to the zoo anymore. Its ashame. There are so many cool things to see, and this is the only time that I will say it, (yup a full grown man) the animals are cute. I said it cute, the barn animals in the back he little piglets and little calfs and chicks. the living conditions for the animals are amazing to the point of how they look like they are in their own habitat and your right there with them. A little pricey but if you go once you are going to want to go again. So look into a membership for a full season, it will pay for itself very fast. I took one star off becasue, hey every single person on the face of the earth wants to see a giant panda and only the top zoos have them (MN zoo has a red panda but thats like a big red squirrel.) so If they ever get a panda, five stars hands down.

love this place, kinda pricey but if you get a membership you only have to go once or twice to pay for it. I go there a few times a year, and because it's free once you have the membership you don't have to feel like you need to see everything in one day.

love this place

The only zoos I've been to were the Los Angeles Zoo and the San Diego Zoo. The Los Angeles zoo is an embarassment to zoos, all the animals look tired and dry and ready to kill themselves by any means possible. Or  their trainers. The San Diego zoo on the other hand is amazing and has pandas!!! So where could the MN zoo reside in this spectrum of zoos?

Fortunately the MN zoo lies far closer to the SD zoo. The MN zoo is pretty awesome. It's well laid out, it's huge, and the animals look pretty happy. Especially the musk ox who get their own giant roaming area.

The animals are amazing too, there were tigers and wolves and RED PANDAS!! OH MY!! The red pandas seriously slayed me, they were the cutest things. But back to the zoo. Most of the animal exhibits are of the animals in their natural habitat. The funniest thing was the raccoon whose exhibit was basically a BACK PORCH. Like with trash cans, chairs, and firewood. A PORCH!!! Oh MN zoo, I love you.

This is a nice zoo.  it's small enough that you can get around the entire zoo in a leisurely day trip (even with young children).  The exhibits weren't crowded on a Saturday.  The animals have a large, natural looking habitat.  It makes it more difficult to spot some of the animals, but I much prefer it.

Overall, a good experience!

Yesterday morning I woke up, mixed a bag of Cub Foods hash browns with a bunch of random stuff in my fridge, added eggs and feta and then stuck it in the oven to bake for an hour.  While breakfast was baking, I decided to log on to Yelp and poke around for a little while.

And then I saw Annie W's post about the Minnesota Zoo.

Epiphany!  The last time I was at the Minnesota Zoo was 10 years ago and it was not exactly as a visitor because that was when I'd taken a summer job as an ice cream cart pusher at the Como Zoo and had to go to the Minnesota Zoo for some training thing.  And before that, it had been for a school field trip where my class had decided to adopt/sponsor the chinchilla.

It was time to go again.  So then I had to convince my fiance that spending the afternoon at the zoo was what he wanted to do with his Sunday.  He's kind of a zoo snob because he is from Columbus, OH (home of the Columbus Zoo, which ranks fairly high on the list of top zoos in the country).  And he also lived in San Diego for awhile and hello!  The San Diego Zoo is the It Zoo of zoos and recognized around the world as such!  Eventually he caved because the weather was gorgeous and I knew he wanted to spend the day outside.

Most of my zoo experience is with free zoos, like the Como Zoo in St. Paul, MN because it was in walking distance from my grandparents home in Como Park and the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, IL because it was the world's shortest bus ride away from my apartment in Chicago.  So whenever I pay to get into a zoo, I'm typically rendered speechless by the variety of animals and the sweeping grandeur of the educational exhibits and displays.  The Minnesota Zoo is no different.

My fiance, the zoo snob, was also very impressed with the zoo.  The comment he repeatedly made was something like, "I can't believe how much space the animals have!"  And it was true.  Each display was much larger than what many zoos frequently allot to their animals with plenty of space that surprisingly allowed some semblance of privacy from all the prying eyes.  The walkways between each exhibit were also maintained very well.  They were also gorgeous and wooded so the scenery in between each animal display was just as much fun to enjoy.

We also paid the extra $4 each to take the monorail ride and I learned that while the Minnesota Zoo is on a 500-acre campus, only one-third of it has actually been developed.  Watch out, world!  There's room to grow!
