    Don't:
    -Get the noodles
    -Dine-in
-Pull on the door to get in - hold down the button and then push (I forget every time)

    Do:
    -Get the sushi
-Try one of their amazing creations, like the Spicy Ebi Tempura Maki, the Alligator Maki, or the Snow Mountain Maki (my mouth is NOT BIG ENOUGH for the giant sushi oeuvres they make)
-Call for take-out when the C line emerges from underground at St. Mary's
    -Chat with the friendly staff
-Enjoy the playlist, which includes "Lucky" by Britney Spears, "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan and "In the End" by Linkin Park
-Feel smug that you're getting the best deal in town (the specialty makis are usually $9.95)

Happy stomach. See you next week, Minato.

Jackie deserves some love, at least as much as he loves his fish. Jackie is the owner and sushi chef over at Minato, and man, does he care about slicing and serving dead fish. In fact, he cares about it more than me and you and maybe even his wife who is a server there. Let me explain.

After ordering, you will be told when the fish came in and how he cut it in excited broken English. If it is particularly fresh, he will practically lose his mind. If you agree with him and smile and repeat back to him how good it is, he WILL lose his mind.

All too often people who don't care about fish will just shovel Jackie's creations down. You can sense the depression within him deepen. He gets quiet.

You would think I have been there a million times and this is a review filled with local love. I have been there twice. The last time I went I was a little tipsy and ordered omakase. He quickly agreed and then asked what "omakase" meant. I just told him I would give him 50 bucks and he could make me whatever he wanted. He was psyched and we had a great time. I got WAY more than my money's worth and he even sent me home with extra. The man was just happy to have someone who cared about his superfresh, dead fish.

I am a sushi purist. I prefer well cut sushi (just fish on rice) and sashimi (just raw fish) to rolls packed with mayo or topped with wackiness. His maki (rolls) are awesome too though.

    What you NEED to taste:
-His saba (mackerel) is made himself. It's oily and cut perfectly with the blue skin shining on top.
-His Ikura (salmon eggs) is AMAZINGLY fresh and he picks through batches and separates the best ones. Get it sashimi style served in lemon rind.
-His escolar (aka white tuna) is incredible as well
-His ocean maki contains 5 types of fish and is torched on top. A definite winner.

A few things to keep in mind:
-This is not a great first date spot. But it's a great spot for friends and significant others.
-The decor is spartan and basic.
-I think it's 15 or 20% off everything on Tuesdays

This place is a 5 star sushi joint, but not in the traditional context. If you are looking for a gourmet experience, O Ya or Fugakyu are better bets. Jackie cuts his fish in more the way a Japanese country family would do it at home; simple and rural. For example, one could enjoy artisan breads, but also appreciate a simple country baguette made perfectly. That's what Minato is.

Minato is great. I don't know why Super Fusion (a few doors down) is always so packed and when i go to Minato its so empty.. The sushi is great. Everything is super fresh and its reasonably priced.

My favorite roll ever is one of their specialty rolls and its the New England Maki. I dream about that roll. When I moved to Nashville for a year and a half the only thing I missed about Boston was that sushi roll.

The staff is very friendly and they always chat with you.

I've been going here for a few years, and I always love it. Let me say upfront that I know it won't be for everyone. It's a small, out of the way place, the wait can sometimes be long, and dining room decor is never going to be their strong suit. What they do and do well, though, is make sushi. Jackie (the owner) is friendly, remembers customers, and enthusiastic about what he's doing. And he's got reason to be: it's just good. From the taste to the consistency to the presentation, it's impressive.

The prices are more or less where you'd expect them to be. The specialty rolls are around $9, but there are plenty of cheaper ones you can fill out your order with, and they have some good combo deals.

Also, they don't serve alcohol but if you bring it a bottle of wine or sake they'll serve it for you.

So if you're in the Washington Square area and are willing to take a few steps off the beaten path, this is a great place to try.

After an exhausting day at work, I decided take-out was in order.

    Enter Minato....quick, easy, delicious

For 20.00 I had a miso soup, three pieces of tuna, an alaska roll and a snow crab roll (the sushi chef offered to make it spicy and it was great)

The best part was the sushi chef - he was so excited to make a snow crab roll and told me how good the crab was...even going so far to show it to me when I came back to pick up before it wa bagged.

Minato Sushi was a fun place to duck into.  The owner (I've been referring to him as Mr. Minato since my visit) is quite the character.  I would come here with friends again, easily.  The ambiance is probably not up to par for a nice date night out though.

Now for the food...  One choice stood out above all others.  The Dancing Eel special roll was phenomenal.  The only way to pack more eel into a roll would be to gut an eel and stuff it with more eel.  Seriously delicious.  The other rolls were tasty too, but if that special is available when you go, it would be a sin not to order it.

I have to give Minato 4 stars mainly because they have always been so, so friendly. The woman who answers the phone at night remembers my name even though I have only ordered a handful of times.

I have only ever gotten delivery from Minato, so here are some overall opinions:

    GOOD:
any vegetable roll. the veggie combo for 10.95 that comes with avocado, cucumber and sweet potato rolls is awesome. i also get the salmon rolls sometimes, which are standard.

    LESS GOOD:
sashimi. i personally really enjoy sashimi, so last time we ordered delivery i was in the mood for some salmon. HUGE mistake- it was fishy and gross, the cut was bad, it was all wrong. Also, they messed up the order slightly and for some reason it took 2 hours to deliver, and no soy sauce. I feel like it has become one of those situations where since you are a "regular" customer it is easier to be neglected.

So, overall, Minato is cute and vegetable maki friendly but I will not be ordering fish from them again.

Five stars for the food alone. The service was not fast but then again it is sushi not fast food. The place is not elegant nor fashionable but it is very clean. All the people manning the place are friendly and helpful. This place may not be Fugakyu or any of the other fancier sushi joints but it is just as good or even better than them.
By the way they have a 15% discount on Tuesday...I think we might make it a Tuesday tradition to visit Minato...it will be like Cheers..."sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name"

This restaurant makes amazing sushi. The owner/sushi chef is wonderfully nice, always friendly and cheerful and inviting. Everyone who comes in is greeted like family -- most return again and again. I've been 3 times in the last two months (on a grad student stipend -- wow! it's THAT good!)

The prices are reasonable -- 8-9$ for unique rolls and 5-7$ for regular rolls. Best is that you can bring in your own saki, which makes sushi dinner and saki a good time instead of a total splurge.

The place is small and has about 5 tables and a small sushi bar but I've usually gone on weekday nights, so it hasn't been overly full.  It's not a fancy or stylish place at all -- cheap tables and chairs, worn tile floors -- but it's  clean as a whistle and so charming for the friendly service and care of the owner.

    My favorites:
Baked Scallop maki -- torched scallops in spicy cream sauce topped on california roll
California Sunshine -- seared salmon in lemon sauce on avacado/salmon rolls
Mango Salmon -- fresh mango covered salmon rolls with a light honey mustard sauce
The Caterpillar -- tuna, salmon, cucumbers, avacado, asparagus -- and best -- they put eyes and antennae on it to look like a caterpillar!

I am trying The Godzilla next -- 4 types of sushi in a roll lightly fried. Also someone suggested Japanese Chips and Salsa -- soft sweet potato chips with sushi and salsa toppings.

Really, I can't say enough good about this place -- try it and if you like sushi (they also have individual pieces that are very good, besides the house special rolls, and also have non-sushi dishes) -- I'm hoping you'll love this place too!!

I just got dinner for two tonight for 20 bucks. Miso soup because of the wait for our food. I can see that this wouldn't be the place to go if you wanted to eat quickly.

Other than that, it was good. We had Kappa Maki, Veggie California Maki, Asian Maki, and Gyoza, and Veggie Tempura. Decent, great price. Ample parking after 6p in the square.

Ps. I went again tonight and found out it's 15% off on Tuesdays. Who knows why, but my sister and I ate our fill for 16 bucks. Pretty awesome if you ask me.

My first and only experience at Minato was eh, ok, and compared to some of the amazing sushi in the area, it did little to please me. I don't mean to be a jerk, but I'm a vegetarian and my Kappa Maki tasted very very fishy :(

Props on the decent prices, I'll give them that.

Two words: sushi delivery.  Let's be honest here, there are days you say to yourself, "Self, I sure wish I had some sushi, but it's twelve degrees out, and even though there's really good sushi to be had in Brookline, it's all the way down Beacon."  On those days, Minato has been good to me.

The sushi itself is nothing to write home about; they seem to have good days and bad days, and while on a good day I've had some excellent spicy scallop roll, on bad days they're capable of screwing up California rolls, which just... boggles my mind.  Some of their rolls with spicy mayo can be a bit too rich, too.  Prices are mid-range, which is about right for mid-range sushi.  If you're looking for delivery, they're your guys; otherwise, head a couple blocks over to Gari or Fugakyu.

Great Sushi and reasonable prices. They go out of their way to provide friendly service and make you feel comfortable. You can tell the owner /sushi chef takes pride in his work. Be careful not to over order. The menu has lots of good choices, so save something for the next visit. I ordered too much the first time I was there and learned to pace myself and save something new to try for the next trips, and there have been several since. Also check out any specials of the day...always fresh.

I have to be in the right mood for sushi, and when I am I get Minato's to deliver. I absolutely love this place, both for the prices and the execution. Too often sushi places try to appeal to large audiences, leaving the basics behind. Minato's does the normal run of sushi with excellence. Places like Fin's and Kayuga and Fugakyu charge an arm and a leg for their sushi, and what you're paying for is the fushion decor and trendy ingredients. Save your money and have sushi the way it's supposed to be made. Go to Minato's.

My first time, I had a lovely experience wandering in without knowing anything about it. The owner and head chef recommended a roll based on my other orders and it's now my favorite. Sometimes you find people and places that just really know their business and do their thing quietly and efficiently, often disguising the sheer competence and pride they take in their work. I'm here to let you know that Minato's is such a place.

(Oh and 10% off on Tuesdays).

My new favorite sushi place! I went here on a whim tonight after work as I was craving sushi (as I always am), and my boyfriend and I were in the Brighton/Brookline area so we just searched for the closest sushi restaurants on his GPS. We found Minato, and went for it, and on the way I of course looked up Yelp reviews for it ;) Now I see why it got such high reviews!

First of all: parking. It's super easy to find parking in the area, at least on a Monday night, so that's a plus.

Second of all: the staff are incredibly genuine and friendly and welcoming, it almost feels like you're going into someone's house for dinner. That being said, the decor and the restaurant itself are super simple. But I'm a firm believer in that often times the best, most authentic food is found in the simplest of places.

Best Japanese green tea I've ever had. Seriously.

We ordered miso soup, which I suppose is difficult to really screw up but it was very tasty. We also ordered soft shell crab tempura which I never tried before (only vegetable & shrimp for me), and I was pleasantly surprised. It was really really fresh and the sauce it came with was delicious.

For sushi, we ordered spicy tuna, Negi and spicy tempura rolls I think. Spicy tuna is a favorite of mine and it has honestly been awhile since I have had a good version of it- until tonight. It was perfect! The tempura sushi was also really really delicious

For dessert we had mochi- green tea & strawberry which were perfect and authentic and delicious. The chef (owner I believe) was always asking us how we liked it and we of course said everything was great.

This place rivals Fugakyu for sure- especially since it's ten times cheaper but seriously so so so so delicious. I will recommend it to everyone!

Minato is my favorite sushi place in Boston, hands down, done and done.

I came here on a whim with my boyfriend a couple of months ago.  It was one of those experiences where everything was a delightful surprise; we got an excellent parking spot on Beacon, it was a Tuesday so Minato gave us 10% off our total, and we discovered our favorite sushi place in Boston (at least so far).  We use the Spicy Tuna roll as our test roll at every sushi place we go, and this was the best so far.  I've been back a couple of times by myself or with friends, and I've ordered delivery, too, and I've never, ever been disappointed.

The interior is nice, nothing really special, except for the neon green paint on the front half of the restaurant.  It's very small, with probably only 8 or 10 tables, with the sushi bar right there in front of you.  The first time I went, my boyfriend and I were the only people there, so the husband and wife (I assume they're husband and wife) who work there were very attentive and gave us suggestion of what we might like to try, which was wonderful!  Not too expensive, especially if you go on Tuesdays and get that discount, and I've gotten their lunch specials a couple of times, which always end up being plenty of food for the amount of money you pay.

The service is great, the price is reasonable (especially with that discount!), the location is perfect (at least for me because I live about five minutes away) and the sushi is amazing.  I will be surprised if I find a better sushi place than this anywhere in Boston.

Personal favorites:  Double Tuna Roll, Volcano Maki, Fire Dragon Maki, and of course, Spicy Tuna.

I once ordered sushi from Minato, until I discovered other delivery sushi places, and then Minato pretty much disappeared from the scene.  That was, at least, until a few days ago.  I was doing some work across the street at Athan's, and felt the strong need for a sushi fix.  I did not realized Super Fusion closed between 3 and 5, so I walked a few doors down to good old Minato.

This was the first time I had dined in at Minato, and I instantly realized its charm, which was the older Japanese couple who ran the place.  Having watched a few Japanese cowboy/food movies in my day, this little restaurant looked exactly like what I would expect to see on a lunch break in Tokyo.  It was 3:30 in the afternoon, so there was no wait, and I grabbed a seat as far away from the irritating air conditioner, set at the perfect angle to blow air in the face of everyone facing towards the door.

I ordered the spicy tuna roll and an order of salmon sushi.  I was in the mood for simple and fresh.  It's hard to say anything bad about the sushi, simply because the elderly couple was so nice.  But it was below par.  The rolls were oversauced in a very plain mayo, and although there were 3 instead of 2 salmon sushi pieces, they were small and slightly slimy.  I did not expect that much, just looking at the sushi in the case I could see that the fish was generally dull in color, a sign they had been sitting out for a while.

Overall, it was not bad sushi, it was better than Fin's and the new place that just opened on beacon by Coolidge Corner.  The house rolls look interesting and inventive.  I would say that the people who work there and the authentic ambiance are the main reasons to come back.  As far as the food goes, however, Super Fusion is still light years ahead.

Also, the ginger dressing is the best I have ever tasted.

Still love this place. Still continue to give my business to this wonderful family owned, great quality place. Sure, it takes a little longer to get your food, but it's just the one guy making all the food. Did I mention he works 7 days a week from open to close? How the hell does he manage to stay so happy all the time? Maybe it's his equally lovely wife... Or maybe there's some magic stuff in the water.... I need me some of that water......

Either or... This place rocks. Service, taste, quality. The whole kit n' caboodle.

Oh yeah, BYOB! It's pretty kick ass that they allow this considering they don't have a liquor license... Just hit up Gimbell's prior!

I agree that the owner was friendly. The sushi was just average for me though.

I swung in for a quick lunch. I didn't see a lunch menu so picked a couple rolls off the main menu. The Red Sox with tuna, avocado, cream cheese and tobiko, and an unagi avocado maki.

The place only had one other table full so my food was done fast. At first look I noticed there was way too much cream cheese in the tuna roll. It was all I was tasting. I was tempted to take some out so I could taste the tuna. The unagi roll was much better. The eel was well spread out well with the avocado. It had a good amount of sauce on it that it didn't need additional dipping. The owner was fast to refill green tea the whole time and ask if everything was OK.

When I went to pay I noticed they did have a lunch menu with some reasonable specials. If you go during lunch I would make sure you check it out. The main menu was reasonable too for all day dining. Atmosphere was very mom and pop. It was clean but the end of the sushi bar looked cluttered.

Two rolls were around $13 with tax. I would give this place an A-OK for value and owner friendliness.

I was at my friend's place in Brighton when we decided to order some sushi. Delivery estimate on a Saturday night was 45 minutes, which seemed reasonable, and their timing was accurate.

The menu is fairly standard. I got the alligator roll (shrimp tempura w/eel and avocado) and the Idaho roll (fried sweet potato) which were both good. My friends also liked their rolls.

All in all, this place has good sushi and delivers. Nothing exemplary or unique, just your typical sushi place.

LOVE this place.  The sushi is fantastic.  The owners are so sweet and genuine.  Try the seaweed salad--It has some cucumber in it.  The crunchy mild flavor was a nice compliment to the seaweed.

How to get one more star: Spruce up the inside a bit.  Maybe play some music.  Also, I know it could be tough, but try to be more accurate w/how long it takes to pick up or deliver.  Waiting around much longer than anticipated is hard--especially for awesome sushi!

Minato is definitely my go to place for sushi in this town, generous and creative rolls, great price, friendly and welcoming staff, and an owner (and head sushi chef) that is obsessed with freshness and quality.

My favorite dish is: Chirashi, a bowl w/ a bed of sushi rice and assorted sashimi on top.

Hot entrees take a little longer to come out of the kitchen, but I haven't had many of them because I'm here for the seafood.  Decor could be better and there's always an interesting selection of pop music playing, but again, I'm here for the seafood.

I went here one day when every other sushi place was closed during that 3-5 time. Which sucks for me because thats my favorite time to eat.

It's kinda dingy inside, defiitely tiny, not fancy at all. But I ended up loving it.

Everyone always talks about the freshness of fish. The thing everyone overlooks is the deliciousness of rice. It's only slightly less important than the fish freshness. The combo of those two things makes amazing sushi.

Also, the service is awesome. I was there alone with a book which can be pretty awkward but they were really nice without trying too hard.

My wife and I have become completely addicted to his sushi, eating here at _least_ once a week. The rest of the staff are very friendly. The specials are constantly being updated with new and fantastic choices.

    Try the Japanese Chip Salsa.

    this is a 3.5

I got take out from here. It was fine enough.

I will qualify that by saying I hate mayo and will not order or eat anything that contains it so I can't accurately vouch for the whole menu

I'm in the process of moving out of Washington Square, and the thing I will miss the most is definitely Minato's. I've been eating here about once a week for a year, and it's definitely the best sushi I've had in Boston. The owner/chef/? is hilarious, and has an uncanny ability to remember previous orders. Take-out is always super fast, usually less than 15 minutes unless it's a really complicated order - delivery tended be a bit slow, especially on Tuesday nights when they do 15% off (but all the same, way faster than foodler).

Top recommendations: shocking maki and caterpillar maki = good times.

This was my hot sushi spot of the moment for awhile but they've become really popular and not increased their staff.  45 mins to 1 hour for sushi is too long.  They offer a 15% discount on Tuesday nights, but the sushi is not always the best and again, the wait can be terrible, even for take out.

First of all, awful customer service.  I ordered online when I had people over who felt like sushi, and then received a call that they were closed due to the weather and canceled the order.  Okay, that's annoying but understandable.  Then more than an hour and a half after ordering, after I'd made an alternate dinner and my guests were getting ready to leave, they show up at the front door.  We told them, no, it was canceled, but the guy insisted so fine we took the food.  So now I have a ton of food I don't need that makes bad leftovers, and they refuse to offer any kind of coupon or explanation.

The food itself is pretty mediocre.  The gyu-don is pretty terrible if you know what it's supposed to taste like.  The unagi sushi was ok, but the sauce is rather heavy.  Tempura was fine.

Yes, the prices have gone up since the place changed ownership - but this is is a really great deal - it's a nice, casual, friendly place with great sushi at what is still a reasonable price.
I had the tekka don tonight and it was awesome - lots of chunks of good quality red tuna, cucumber, seaweed, and avocado, served on top of rice with sesame oil and some kind of spicy sauce on the side.  It hit the spot and I couldn't finish it all.
The service is great too - the people there are really friendly and they remember repeat customers.  I go there a lot and I'm never disappointed.

Sometimes I want the owner to zip it because I'm hungry and I, frankly, can't understand what the heck he's saying anyway. BUT- the man makes some good sushi. AND, it's cheap for the quality. There's nothing special about the decor. I'd rather order it for delivery and enjoy at home!

Minato is great! I have to admit, I've never been in the restaurant but they can't be beat for delivery. They are amazingly fast (on a Friday night, they say it will be an hour but really they are almost always there within a half hour). The sushi is fresh and the prices are fair. Their rolls are generous and they have nice cuts of fish on their rolls, a nice selection and variety. Try the King Roll, any of the spicy rolls, dragon roll or rainbow roll (the classics). I highly recommend Minato.

I disagree with most of the reviews here - I've had consistently good sushi from Minato. I think Minato is much better than Fugakyu (which is overrated in my book and too gimmicky) and the other sushi spots in Coolidge Corner. The only other sushi restaurant in the area I've been impressed with is Ginza - but it's pretty expensive so I don't go regularly.

This is a great casual sushi spot. Nothing beats the BYOB, and the friendly hosts.

I use to order from here, in addition to the other yummy place next door (3 doors down to the left). But ever since they changed ownership, the sushi here is awful. Enough said.

8:45 pm on a Monday night and I snap out of a deep funk and realize that I need sushi in a very bad way. I could rally and hope for the best and try to make it out of the house in pajamas and this filthy sweatshirt OR I could consult the masters of internet food delivery online. I went with option B via. Foodler and found that Minato was open and delivering until 10:00 pm. After taping my jaw closed so I would not drool all over said filthy sweatshirt and my laptop I proceeded to click away adding a number of sushi options to my order. I made a note asking them to include some Miso soup and they actually called me to confirm that they would add the Miso as requested. Less than 45 minutes later my sushi arrived and I was able to un-tape my jaw and commence gorging myself on the fruits of the sea (quality was very good, sashimi had excellent texture and the sweet potato maki roll was a real treat) . Thank you Minato, you have proven that I can eat well and be a wretched, horrible, lazy animal on Monday evenings.

I've only eaten there once so far, but was very impressed, and plan to return.  I had Tekka Maki and Unagi Maki, both were good but the unagi was my favorite of the two.  The green tea was also excellent, and the waitress kept refilling my cup.  The chef and the waitress were both very friendly and polite.  If you're in the mood for Sushi but don't want to spend too much and don't require upscale ambiance, then I'd recommend Minato.

came here for the first time because super fusion was closed 3-5.  can't really comment about the food because i was too busy trying to get the hell out of there asap.  maybe they've changed owners or something, the lady is quite nice but the guy is completely disorganized.  it usually doesn't bother me that they're not japanese people operating a sushi place.  but the two of them openly arguing about which orders to take first and swearing nonstop is unacceptable, doing so in cantonese doesn't help either.

can't agree on others' remarks about the cost, for two makis and a rice dish, this was the worst 30 dollars i've ever spent.
