Great brunch in a very modest setting!
Ventured here this morning with Nga B. for some good catching up time and eats and we tried the following:
--FOOD--
1) Avocado & Swiss Cheese Omlette, $7.50ish
- So incredibly fluffy and stuffed with a generous amount of cheese and fresh avocados. Huge!
- Served with really good home fries (cubed small, crisped on the edges, topped with sour cream...MmmMmm! Perfection!), fresh fruit, and a choice of a home-made muffin or whole wheat toasted
- I opted for the Pumpkin Muffin which was ridiculously moist and soft!
2) Chicken Sandwich with Spinach, $6.50ish
- Shredded roasted chicken pieces with a good amount of mayo and spinach, served between two slices of whole wheat bread. Nothing out of the ordinary though.
---SERVICE---
Family run, nothing frilly. Just simple, chill, friendly, service.
Btw, I love it when waiters/waitresses make recommendations or tell you about their personal favorites. =D
---AMBIANCE---
Nothing fancy, no fancy decorations. Just tables, solid food, and good service.
---FINALLY---
Opt. for breakfast, and get an omelette!
Haha, holy crap. This review says this was in my 'unfinished reviews' for 5 months!
Anyway. I was really surprised that I liked a vegetarian place. Generally, if there's no meat being served, I'm not there. Ever.
BUT. We did stop here because we were looking for a brunch spot in Oakland and this was recommended by Yelp!
It's a great, friendly spot! Even if you're not a vegetarian, you'll definitely find something to like here.
Goodbye Mimosa, you were the best brunch in all of Oakland, anywhere, even Paris. Very sad... darn those hipsters should have forgotten Mamma's and gone to you instead... Maybe you will come back????

I just rediscovered Mimosa.... I forgot about Mimosa for a looong time, how could I have? I am… Read more »
Why do I find it odd to have Cantonese speakers in the American breakfast kitchen? I mean, they're people that have cooking skills too right? It's the fact that I'm Cantonese and I can hear what they are saying in the back that makes it weird. No bad talk about the customers, just your usual, "the egg sandwich customer wants some more coffee" kind of deal.
We went to Mimosa cafe Sunday for their breakfast because of the good feedback that its been getting on Yelp. A young Chinese guy greeted us and let us seat ourselves. I browsed the menu and saw some appetizing pictures of breakfast quiches and omelets. I asked the waiter what that was on the menu, and he actually said, "oh those are just pictures..." To that I had to take a bit of a chuckle. Rule #10 in the top 10 rules of opening a restaurant: Use the foods in your menu on your menu. From there I knew the day would be light-hearted and somewhat comical. I ordered the French Toast meal with a coffee. It came with a side of Veggie Sausages and an egg, which I took scrambled. My girlfriend ordered the scramble mix with a blue berry muffin along with a Mocha coffee.
The food came and everything was placed on Chinese dishes. The kind of plastic dishes with Chinese designs that I'm used to at dim-sum places. It was quite a site! I enjoyed it. The French Toast looked pretty dry, but it tasted a lot better than it looked. That's always a plus. They gave me way too much syrup, but it's good to know it's there. The winner of the meal was the blue-berry muffin that my girlfriend ordered, very soft and just enough flavor so that you're not dominated to blueberry. We ate to our heart's delight.
The place is a great place for vegetarians and baby lovers, as we saw three couples with their babies there that day.
It's gone. Closed. I'm devastated. I was a customer for (must have been) over 20 years. RIP, Mimosa Cafe. Fond memories always.
Mimosa has two type of customers: those who are incredibly satisfied and love it, and those (like me) who find it borderline inedible and over-hyped.
We went to mimosa on the recommendation of one of those other type of customers and were really looking forward to the experience. The fresh-squeezed OJ tasted like sunny delight and their fresh fruit was of the frozen variety. I give them 2 stars because they have a lot of fans and, frankly, I am afraid of them as they might just be hungry!
I LOVE Mimosa (the drinks and restaurant LOL!)
I was first turned on by a friend of mines who's vegetarian. He suggested it for dinner one night. I've been hooked since.
I've had and almost always order the asparagus w/tofu in black bean sauce. Yummmm
OR
I'll order the enchiladas that are super yummy and fresh.
For breakfast I order the tofu scramble.
My downfall with them is the parking, it sucks!!! If it didn't suck so bad I'd frequent more often. A plus is that if you call your order in and you find that there's no park they will bring it out to you curbside.
Friendly little place with very decent mimosas.
The portions were very hearty, friendly, and the accompanying fruit did not disappoint.
My partner had a very strict diet at the time and the staff was more than accomodating to make sure he had his fill at breakfast.
No meat served, but you wouldn't realize it with a full brunch menu and a few mimosas lining your gut.
So from the awesome reviews, we had to check this place out. Failed to catch that it was a VEGETARIAN cafe! My poor carnivourous fiancee had tofu sausage :) But he did like it!
They serve good coffee! My tofu scramble was mighty hearty and I really enjoyed the fresh fruit and muffin on the side.
Its a small spot run by a Vietnamese family. Looks like most patrons order food to go.
I've never had a Tofu Scramble before and I have always wanted to try one. After eating on at the Mimosa Cafe I am now a believer in the Tofu Scramble.
This gem of a restaurant is tucked away just a bit off the beaten path. The decor is unassuming but when I am eating an 8.95 breakfast scramble that includes toast, home fries, and fresh fruit the last thing I'm worried about is atmosphere (though they did have local artists photography on the wall).
The scramble was flavored perfectly with tastes of garlic, spinach, and green onions combining into a mouthful of healthy delicious breakfast splendor.
The apple juice my date got was REAL apple juice as it wasn't clear and tasted like biting into a fresh apple.
I wish they would have displayed their specials more prominently because I only realized that they had Greek, Mexican, and Curry scrambles until after I ordered.
Like I said this place is a gem and even if you aren't a vegetarian a Tofu Scramble is worth taking some time to appreciate.
I really liked Mimosa Cafe because the servers were super nice and
though they were not vegan they understood what vegan is and knew to take the sour cream out of my tofu scramble. The food was really good and they served huge chunks of fresh fruit. I think the pricing is average for what you find today so no complaints there. Fast service as well.
I've eaten here about 6 times. The food is always good to great, and very healthy. The staff is friendly. The prices are OK.
The place really needs to be spruced up though. Faded paint and signs out front look to me as though the business was abandoned years ago. I do really like the place, and I'm always tempted to propose some sort of work/barter with them to make their business look as good as it actually is. If I had any free time, I would.
But back to the review. It is worth going to this place if for no other reason than to take a TRIP TO THEIR BATHROOM. I've never seen anything like it! It's like a medieval journey just to get to it. You take this long, dark, narrow corridor which dips and rises and travels between buildings. It is seriously a trip. You have to wonder if you're spelunking or answering nature's call.
Cute place tucked away and hard to find unless you're searching for it.
We came here since one of my friends wanted to try it. None of us knew it was all vegetarian food except for some items with chicken mixed in, but it was stil good.
My omelette was huge and delicious with a mixture of garlic and spinach. My friends tried their homemade muffins which were a hit at the table, but the homemade crossaints were heavier than most crossaints so they didn't go over so well.
The place does need a renovation and a better layout (since it was hard for them to accomodate us even with only four of us). It was good but I am all about the heart-attack (bacon, sausage, etc) breakfast instead...
Oh yeah, Heather is the bomb too. Hey...why does it say CLOSED? Did they CLOSE? NOOOOOO!!!!

Great food, I normally would knock of a star or two for the horrible atmosphere but the food is so… Read more »
That this place has so few reviews is a testament to its tucked-in-the-corner homey feel. I've lived within blocks of Mimosa Cafe and driven past it every time I get on the freeway for the past two years, but had never eaten here. But my approaching departure from this awesome neighborhood has given impetus to finally trying one of the first restaurants I bookmarked when I joined Yelp.
It's unassuming, with faded green carpet and a few pieces of local art scattered on the walls. Our waitress was nice, genial, and called me "Honey" like an old friend. The service was fast - we waited no more than 5-10 minutes between our orders being taken and the food being placed down.
The orange juice is cold and freshly squeezed to order, and it's pretty typical for customers to scoop the seeds out and just place them in a little mound on the table. It's truly phenomenal. This is so terribly cliche, but it literally tastes like a straw was stuck into an orange, like all of those Tropicana commercials.
I had the avocado and cheese omelet. Those who know me are well aware of my love affair with the avocado...the more, the better. Well, Mimosa apparently feels the same way, and I'm going to guess that no less than two avocados were stuck into my omelet. Delicious. I also appreciated the strawberry jam on my side of toast, and my friend enjoyed her mango muffin.
There are tons of vegetarian and vegan options, as well as a lone chicken sandwich for the carnivore in your group. Incidentally, I didn't see any mimosas actually on the menu, but they do serve wine so I'm sure they could whip one up for you if you asked nicely.
My friend remarked that if she lived in the area, she'd love to bring a book and just burrow into her seat and lazily eat breakfast and read. I agree, and it's really unfortunate that I didn't discover this place earlier.
This is my new favorite brunch place. Nothing makes me feel better about being vegan than getting to stuff my face like all the normals, and Mimosa really delivers.
I'm moving to this hood in September, so the boy and I decided we would walk around. FIRST OFF Oakland is way better than San Francisco, so I'm pretty happy about moving out here for cheaper. Suck it, SF.
Anyway, it's brunchtime, so we check out Mimosa, and everything about this place is great, even down to the comically flakey service. Seriously, most things had to be asked for more than a couple times, but the people were nice and kind of obviously unsure of what was going on which was, if not endearing, at least amusing. They have an insane number of tofu scrambles, all of which look insanely delicious - I got one with curry powder and it slew me. But the ABSOLUTE best part is that they pile your plate to overflowing such that one LITERALLY has to move a couple things off the plate, just to maneuver anything around.
Plus, to get to the bathroom you have to walk down this weird dark hallway that makes you feel just like you're in a Kafka novel - what fun!
Decent breakfast joint. I went here because my friends visiting from out of town could only eat vegan. The portions here are huge! I got an avocado jack omelette, which needed some more flavor. The prices weren't too bad, but I think their food was a bit bland.
I could have sworn that I gave this place 5 stars in my original review. Well, let me set the record straight. (God, I love this new update feature!) Mimosa Cafe is a solid 5 star place in my book.
The food in its freshness and simplicity reminds me of something I'd make at home, except for the tofu scrambles which I can't make as good as they do. Oh and the muffins are better here too since I don't bake.
Everything I've had here has been tasty and wholesome. The service is always good and the prices are reasonable. Add to that the adventure that is the restroom and really, what more can I ask from a restaurant? It's not fine dining but for its class, I think it's a winner.

I love Mimosa! I especially like the tofu scrambles, nut loaf, and when I feel like eating eggs, the avocado omelet. All of the food comes in large portions and I've always had service with a smile.
This is a no nonsense type of place. It's not fancy and a little rough around the edges, but that shouldn't keep you from checking this place out. I like that it's family run and even though service can be slow at times, I've never felt put off or ignored. I've always found that if I ask for something, they get it for me, but then again, I'm not one of those types that just waits for someone to notice if my water is getting low or I need tabasco. So if you want to dine at some fancy place...this is probably not the place for you, but if you want some good vege food served by friendly people, you should check out this neighborhood gem.
REAL good.
There are a few solid places to get breakfast in the Grand Lake area, but this is my favorite. Those tofu scrambles are delicious, and I'm not vegetarian.
And, oh my god, those muffins.
If I could wake up earlier, I'd eat here before work every day.
No frills, but...ever so good! I ate brunch here with the mysterious Ms. M. She recommended it and I had to trust her, as she has very good taste. She was right again.
I had one of their special dishes which was so very delicious. They also offer Vegan alternatives. For a little hidden gem in the rough, stop here for good food and reasonable prices with fast and friendly service.
best tofu scrambles in the bay.
Mimosa Cafe is wonderful. Sure, it could use a coat of paint, but I always feel genuinely welcomed by the waitress and I love that they put local art on the walls. I've been a Mimosa customer for many years.
My favorite edibles at Mimosa are the green salads. They are so fresh and the greens are tender and delicious. The dressings are dreamy -- the Green Goddess is just pulverized green goodness, the Balsamic is delish, but my personal favorite has to be the Creamy Dressing! I LOVE these salads.
And as for plain, healthy foods, they have them -- simple, no nonsense, tasty foods that are nourishing and easy on your system. I like the Nutloaf and the Macaroni and Cheese, me. I have heard that the tofu salad is excellent, too.
If you want fancy, give this spot a miss -- but if you want fresh, healthy comfort food - this'll be for you.
I've eaten a lot of tofu scrambles in my day, and I must say this is the best one ever. I think I'm a pretty good vegan cook, but I have no idea how to make one this good.
Service is pretty good, but location / ambiance is just meh.
This is one of my favorite places. I often go for brunch on the weekends, because my boyfriend is obsessed with the tofu scrambles. He says their tofu is the only good tofu in a tofu scramble in the whole bay area. Their selection is vegetarian- and vegan- friendly. I like the french toast with veggie sausages and an egg. Their OJ is fresh squeezed, and their water has lemon in it and isn't filled with ice cubes like some places. Their service is slow, but they are happy to make substitutions and take special requests.
For lunch/dinner, they offer a good variety of veggie and non-veggie things. My dad was happy eating here when my folks visited, even though he needs meat and is opposed to tofu (I'm veggie, if you haven't guessed, and there are plenty of selections for me). The veggie and brown rice and tofu stir fry or sautee is my favorite for dinner, and everything else I've tried I like a lot, except for the enchiladas.
This place is best for 1, 2, or 3 people, as the tables are small and round except for two rectangular tables. The place is small too. This is a cafe, but not really a place where you get a coffee and sit forever -- it's more of a tiny restaurant. Though I did come once just for coffee with a friend, and it was fine. The tables are purple, and places with purple tables always have great food (in my experience). It's busy on the weekends, but never so loud you can't talk. Weekdays it's pretty quiet and not busy. You can call for takeout here. There's a ramp into the place for wheelchairs.
Someone else said not to use the bathroom. I delight in using the bathroom here. Getting to the bathroom is quite the adventure, and one not to be missed. Unless you are on crutches or otherwise have mobility issues.
This is my favorite east bay cafe, and I highly recommend it.
I spent an hour online one day looking for a smoothie place that wasn't jamba juice or surf city squeeze. I never found anything close to the house. Then one day while in the neighborhood I peeked my head into Mimosa's. It was 3:30 in the afternoon and the no-frills restraunt was completely empty, but they had smoothies.
I wasn't sure I wanted one so I decided that if the smoothie wasn't 100% up to my picky specs, I wouldn't have it.
Is it all fresh fruit? YES
Does it have frozen yogurt in it? NO, regular yogurt
Do you add sugar? No, sweetened with apple juice
Perfect!
Best smoothie I ever had that didn't come out of my own kitchen. All these good reviews - I'm eager to come back and try the rest of the menu.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++
UPDATE:
I just got to reading my old reviews and realized that I never updated this one. This has become one of my regular spots for breakfast and lunch (and smoothies, of course). I la-la-la-love the nutloaf! And it always feels good to be treated like family.
Went here for a good-luck dinner... I had the halibut. Great sauce. I think I ate it all. She had the coq au vin. It was ok, not authentic as it was sorta dry. Like they just cooked the chicken and then put the sauce on?
I really liked the tomato tart tatin...
This is by far the best brunch place in the Grand Ave./Lakeshore area. The redhead waitress is vegan and will warn you that the veggie sausage is not. I haven't seen her there in a while but she can handle the entire place without a problem. No issues with substitutes on any of their dishes and they've never screwed up my orders.
My favorite thing about this place? The tofu scrambles. I have yet to find a restaurant that compares. I always order the Mexican scramble, minus the cheese. They make it with corn tortillas and it puts a smile on my face for the rest of the day. No need to fear, vegetarians and meat eaters can dine together in harmony.
Decor is unimpressive to say the least but they do post local art on the walls for sale. And the trip to the bathroom-it's an adventure.
3 stars is not bad. i always feel badly giving 3 stars to a place i like, but truth be told, this place was just fine and i think that equals 3 stars.
i was excited to hear about this veggie breakfast place because it is always nice to find a place with tofu scrambles. alas, they were out of potatoes (to be fair it was around noon on a thursday) and i didn't think i could handle a tofu scramble without potatoes...we got the walnut cheddar loaf with marinara sauce. it was heavy and a large portion, and pretty good. i have no idea what was in it (except, presumably, walnuts and cheddar) but the flavor was simple, had some spice, and it was very filling. i got the tofu enchiladas which came with a big dollop of very tasty guacamole and some chips. this was spicy in a good way, and also very filling. i could have used some more cheese, but what's new...
the lady was very nice and the service was good. perhaps the restaurant could use a little glossy redecorating but i would go again.
Really, the only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because I wasn't blown away, but I must say, super simple and straightforward, no frills (indeed), great and friendly (and QUICK) service. Just felt good, they took care of us, my pal and I were totally satisfied, and got exactly what we wanted there.
Couldn't bring my sister there because it's far below her foof approval level, but I would definitely go back to meet up with local friends.
I freakin' LOVE this breakfast spot. I don't know about parking because I only ride a bike, but it looks crappy around there on the weekend, so you should just ride your bike there. The server, Kelly, I think is her name, is so wonderful and warm. The food is spectacular. Try the Mexican Scramble if they have it for a special. The fresh OJ actually is fresh and somehow they always manage to have sweet juice oranges, not the super bitter ones I sometimes unhappily find in my breakfast cup. The server says, to your health when she puts it down. So cute.
The potatoes are my favorite in all of Oakland. And I am a potato snob. The coffee isn't great, but with all the other upsides, it still takes the cake as my favorite spot. I almost don't want to write a review like this to blow it up....
Don't forget to take a trip to the bathroom down the "Indiana Jones" hallway. (Not advisable for prissy girls in heels)
I was always biking past this cafe and thinking to myself whether it was any good or not, so I was glad that a friend suggested we go there a while ago to get tofu scrambles for Sunday brunch. If it wasn't for my friend's suggestion, I would have probably never have gone there.
The Mimosa Cafe is easy to look over like that, while it's in a easy to get to location, it's somewhat hidden between a tanning salon and some other forgettable place right by a freeway entrance. But I'm glad I discovered it., it's a great place to go within biking distance of my house for a lazy Sunday breakfast.
I only get the tofu scrambles here, so reader take heed-I'm probably never going to eat a real omelet there or anywhere, so just keep that in mind when reading my review I guess.
But I like this place, there's always the same nice waitress, the food comes in good portions, and it's affordable. For like 8 bucks you can get a tofu scramble with a lot of home fries and toast or a home made muffin. The coffee is decent, not the best I've had, but it's ok, the only way I can put it is that there are many other breakfast places that seem to be more revered that serve a lesser quality cup of joe than Mimosa.
And the service is pretty good here, since it's such a small place, it'd be pretty hard to get passed over.
What keeps the Mimosa Cafe from getting a higher ranking for me is that their tofu scramble menu is pretty limited, I think there are only 2 scrambles on the menu, and one of them has cheese. Yes, they are willing to make any omelet as a scramble, but it kind of losses something when you also have to take out half of the ingredients with it.
So I guess to be fair to the place, the Mimosa Cafe is a pretty cool laid back spot, but it's just not the kind of breakfast place that's going to blow you away or anything.
My first impression was that we had walked into a Chinese fastfood joint. Everything about this says implies that the food won't be good but man was I wrong. The mimosas were made with fresh squeezed orange juice (we saw them juicing the oranges in the back) and newly opened champagne. It was enough to get you drunk on a Saturday morning.
The food is so good. The portions are huge but definitely in a good way. I like it that you only get one kind of toast here - whole wheat. And their muffins are made with whole wheat flour too. And their omelets, so good, so very good. Service was good too, despite (or because of) that it was the owner's 2 teenage sons running the place.
Can't wait to go back there again!
I've been meaning to try this place forever-- every time I entered the 580 entrance, this place catches my eye and I think , yeah I'm gonna check it out-- well two years later...
Right off I notice that this is one of those places that feels like mom's kitchen, albeit the climate inside feels bit damp and cold. You can tell that this place runs on word of mouth from the vegan/vegetarian end, which it specializes in.
Our server is the owner, and right off she made us feel welcomed and comfortable. She recommended the special omelet with "cheddar loaf"-- her own creation...I had it with tofu, which is out of the norm for me, but it was fabulous! The cheddar thing was a mixture of cheese and soy, accompanied with tons of veggies. Her huge portions are also a big selling point, and the prices are very reasonable, about $7-8 / plate.
Oh mah gawd! Have the fish sandwich. If it's not on the specials board - beg for it. Whole wheat bun, crispy non greasy fish, grilled red onions, cheese and some tasty tartar sauce. Drool! Go for the potato salad too - they leave the skins on and it's deelish.
I'm told the nutloaf is fabulous and the home made desserts are worth a shot if you have room.
This is a very down home locals place with fresh, healthy, yummy food. Support local y'all!
Ugly restaurant. I had a white rock in my potatoes. Coffee was tooooo strong.
Other than that, an okay breakfast. I had the Yelp-recommended cheese and avocado omelette, which wasn't bad. The home fries were good, too. (But clearly they don't wash the potatoes well enough.) I have serious suspicions about the cleanliness of this place. Just look at the swinging wood door separating the dining area from the far back: it's nasty.
This place is not the same as it used to be ever since (I'm assuming) it was sold to a Chinese family. I had some artwork displayed here years ago and remember the food being fairly decent for a vegetarian cafe. It's not even a vegetarian restaurant anymore. Hello! -- they serve chicken!
I decided to give it a try after nearly ten years, and ordered the chicken omelet. The omelet was huge -- there was tons of chicken, but it lacked all flavor. The homemade wheat croissant was unique -- very dense. I didn't finish either.
Perhaps, the biggest turn-off was that the two teenage servers decided to take their breakfast break the same time as all of us customers were having our breakfast too. They sat at an empty table eating their omelet just like everyone else. Hello! -- isn't a cardinal rule of food service to never eat in front of customers?! After they inhaled their food, they continued to serve customers -- without even washing their hands!!! They ate with their hands! After experiencing this, I would seriously question the cleanliness of this place.
It's too bad this place had to sell out.
P.S. I forgot to mention that their PLASTIC drinking cups were all cracked! Mimosa Cafe -- its time to rush over to your favorite dollar store and buy more plastic cups or maybe just buy some disposable dixie cups. At least they're more sanitary!
Wowee, that was tasty! We did not know what to eat tonight. We really wanted Greek, but of course, there is no good Greek food in the Bay Area. So we thought to ourselves, what else could we eat? And that's when we decided to check out Mimosa Cafe.
First off, the lady that served us was SO NICE. I really liked her a lot. Secondly, the food was very good!! I had the asparagus and jack quiche with a salad (their vinegarette was delicious!), and my man had a stir fry. YUMMY!
Wow, that was a really lame review. I must be tired or something.
Mmmm! I just had dinner at Mimosa. Between the boyfriend and myself, we had the nut loaf, asparagus and jack quiche, tomato vegatable soup, and two smoothies.
I had read the reviews here and was expecting good food, but I was still shocked. Everything was so fresh and yummy. Actually it was YUMMY!
A friend who happened to be eating there when we showed up recommended that we try the nut loaf, otherwise I never would have ordered it. Now I can hadly wait until I am hungry again so I can go back and order another.
Great, fresh food. Super-friendly service. Good prices. Now one of my favorite places.
