This review's for Jackie and her men's cuts. I've been going to her for over 2 years and have had a handful of hairstyles in that timeframe. Every cut has been meticulous and exactly what I've wanted, without being over the top or uncomfortable.
My girlfriend and a handful of her friends have also had color done and have always walked away happy. -

So I just got home from my first visit to Milvali and my hair is so happy that it might actually be whistling.
I relocated to SF from Boston where I had a stylist that I adored. Not only did I adore her but I trusted her. I could walk in, close my eyes and say, "do whatever you feel like" and I always left feeling great. And I don't ever take risks with my hair. With her, I could.
So. Fast forward to San Francisco. I'm of course terrified that I won't find someone that I liked as much so I dragged my feet until getting it cut was no longer optional. I made an appointment at Milvali at the recommendation of the former tenant of my apartment. (The Yelp coupon certainly didn't hurt, especially going somewhere new).
First, they got me in the day after I made the appointment. The minute I walked in I noticed the happy, welcoming energy from the staff. My appointment was with Ashley who in addition to being a fantastic stylist, is just awesome to talk to. I was immediately comfortable. She gave great advice when I was looking for suggestions to protect my chlorine damaged-locks. (I also got a deep-conditioning treatment this time.) She's personable, professional, and took time to get to know me and what I was looking for in a cut/color. I haven't done my color here yet, but I plan to for the next visit.
I unfortunately don't know the names of the other two women working there that I was speaking with when I was checking out, but they were super friendly as well. I'm thrilled with my cut and feel totally de-stressed after a stressful work week!
I can't imagine that other team members would be any different, so I while I highly recommend Ashley, I think you can expect this level of quality across the board. And PS....as if the experience wasn't enough, my very guys-guy boyfriend keeps touching my hair.

I was a first-timer as Amra's client, as my stylist wasn't available, & she was AMAZING! I [had] long curly hair for 11 years & was long-overdue for a change so I told her exactly what I wanted, showed her a few picture examples and she went to town! She knew exactly what she was doing and made me feel confident & comfortable (considering how much hair I wanted chopped off), not to mention she gives an exhilarating shampoo massage, mmm..m!
Now I have a cute, sassy, sophisticated lil' bob that I LOVE and have gotten so many compliments on already & it's only been a few hours! After a haircut I usually go straight home to wash whatever style the stylist did right outa my hair but Amra worked her magic & gave me a super sexy do. THANKS AMRA!!!!! -

You could probably call me a regular here...I came here last year for spray tans from Suzy and I am now hooked! They by far have the best spray tans in SF! They also have amazing people who work there and I have since tried many services ranging from waxing, eyelash extensions, and hair by Allisha, which is always fabulous and exactly what I ask for! I love feeling like I have a place to go that I can always depend on consistent quality and service. Also, another reason why I love this place is that they are ALWAYS on time! A frequent issue when planning these types of services at many places that I have tried.

After Milvali turned me down for extensions I figured I might as well keep cutting my hair (because waiting til my hair is five inches long for extensions from them = it's already grown out I don't need extensions anymore). So I cut my hair, then a week later I found Melonie in San Jose (AmpdUpBeauty). At this point I barely had 2 inches of hair but she reassured me she could get the job done.
Long story short, she did. And the icing on the cake, I paid 3.5 times less than what Milvali quoted me (and that's before tip!).
Cut to Milvali's response to my original post - there's an apology in there somewhere, but also an implication I should thank them for not leaving me a hot mess. Yeah except I *asked in advance* and was told the wrong information which led to an egregious waste of my time and money. 1/2 inch of hair does not equal "1/2 inch plus some longer pieces for blending/cover." That's a pretty glaring omission. If I were local I wouldn't care so much but if I'm driving 2.5 hours to your salon you could at least be forthcoming with the correct information.
Anyway, I found capable hands with AmpdUpBeauty and despite what Milvali's response would leave you to believe my pixie cut + extensions did not equal mullet. I was actually talking about my extensions with my co-workers today and nearly all of them had forgotten I even had short hair before. I have a cute bob now that is a dead ringer for how I keep my hair traditionally (before the pixie that is).1 Previous Review: Show all »

Love, love loveeee this salon. I go to Alisha for my luscious blonde locks and she does an amazing job with my highlights, color and cut. I have pretty straight-forward hair but I always leave feeling fabulous and my hair feels amazing. Alisha does a truly great job, actually just sent my co-worker to her as well because she loved my hair so much.
Also, LOVE Suzy to do my spray tan. Milvali always has deals on the spray tan which makes it affordable. I would way rather be airbrushed than go to a booth and be all streaky and smelly. Suzy does a great job and I always look sun-kissed and dark when I leave the salon. -

Sophie colored and cut my hair for the first time tonight and I LOVE it!!! She is so talented, listens to what you want but also gives her expertise advise, which I appreciate she is overall an amazing stylist. The salon is fabulous and the owner Deb is the sweetest. It was so welcoming I had a great experience and will continue to go back and suggest this salon to anyone looking for a comfortable, hip place with great people and cool vibe. 5 stars all the way!!!

I love Ryan! She's awesome. I've been seeing her for haircuts for a few years now. My cuts have lasted, keep looking better with age and simply stated: I feel good about my hair. Ryan is super skilled at translating your verbal vision for your hair into something real!! She is incredibly friendly, down to earth, caring and professional. She's also great about getting me in for in-between bang trims. Highly recommended!
As for Milvali, it's a lovely, clean, bright (natural light) salon. Everyone here has been friendly and helpful. -

Wow, how have I been going to Lindsey at Milvali for over 5 years now and not ever written a review of her or the salon?? She has been fabulous at cutting my hair! Before I found her, I was never one to stick to a certain stylist, I'd go to different people every time I got a haircut. But Lindsey listens to what I want, gives her professional opinion, and I always leave the salon with my hair looking awesome. She cuts it in a way that makes it easy for me to style at home, and the cut always grows out really well. No awkward stage. So of course I'm going to keep coming back here to see her!
I've never gone to any of the other stylists, but I see their work (cuts, color, extensions, up-dos) as I'm getting my cut, and they all seem fabulous. Everyone is always friendly. I like that they have tons of great products, and will offer suggestions, but never pressure me to buy anything. Over the years, I've bought a couple of hair products that I love, and also some of the Milvali line of makeup and brushes. I love the eyeliner pencil!
They recently expanded to provide more waxing/tanning services, and I am so happy to see that Suzy is here! She made room for me after my haircut, and I'm so glad she did. The woman is seriously a master at eyebrows! -

I went to Alicia off a recommendation from a friend of a friend...and I am so happy I did. I have been in SF for about two years now and have had such a hard time finding a place that I like, feel comfortable with, am not paying a fortune for, and to find a stylist that gets it.
Alicia listened to what I liked, how I usually wear my hair, my *lack* of really doing my hair every day and roughly what color I liked -- what I came out with was hair that I loved -- color, cut, and all. I haven't been THAT happy with my hair in a while...so the reason for the review today versus the two months ago when I first got my hair done...I am due for a new color and cut and can't wait to go back - so I thought I should write the review before I forgot again.
Long story as short as can be - I finally found a place and stylist I love and I have recommended it to friends and now I recommend it to the Yelp world as well :) -

I am so excited that Alisha Philips is now at Milvali Salon on Union! She is now located in my neighborhood and I am so happy I get her amazing talent and her fun bubbly personality. I love my hair color and cut (She has it down to a science and perfectly executes what I want, EVERYTIME). People stop me all the time to ask me who does my hair, and thanks to Alisha... I feel like a walking hair model : )

I'm usually very specific with my hair, but decided to try this place because it'd been a while since I'd had a haircut. My hair straggly and thin at the bottom, past my thighs...it was just time. And the main reason I came here was because my mom gave me her groupon that needed to be used asap.
Even walking in I was a little nervous because I've had horror experiences at some places. But I dont know what all the worry was about. I was set up with Sophie and she was great! She was super nice and easy to talk tom and she really listened to what I had to say and what I wanted. I ended up chopping off a good 12 inches off! I love what Sophie did. Its cute and easy to manage. And I love that she does complementary bang trims in between cuts. I'll be back to see her for sure!
I was really excited to hear they do feather extensions, but their prices are steep. $25 for one. Yikes. I've been to swanky salons that do 3 for that much. -

I've been meaning to write this review for quite awhile now. I went to see Hanna to get hair extensions mainly for my then upcoming wedding. I have to admit I was pretty nervous about it but Hanna did a really great job with my extensions! She ended up putting in 3 different colors to make sure it would match my existing highlights and look as natural as possible! And it really did! At the beginning the ends got a little too dry so I went back to Milvali and they recommended a product by Kérastase which worked very well (the Kérastase products are pricy but it fixed my dry ends ).
Even though the extensions were put in as far away from my face as possible because I told her I'd like to also be able to wear my hair in a ponytail - I sometimes still had trouble hiding the beads. Although the new technique is much more protective towards your hair since the beads are not glued in I still felt my own hair was thinner after than it was before we put in the extensions. For me it's a conflict because I love how my extensions looked but it's scary to see how much thinner my hair got after taking them out.
I also got my blonde partial highlights done by Hanna and was very very satisfied with the result. I don't know how she did it but for the first time (and I have had blonde highlights for more than 10years) you can't really tell that it has been 3 months since I had my highlights done. There is no dark/harsh line between my natural hair color and the highlights it just still blends in very well even though my hair grew quite a bit.
Moreover I got my makeup done by Hanna for my engagement shoot and it turn out just the way I had imagined it - natural but at the same time Hanna emphasized just the right features of my face!
Overall Milvali is a great salon! The girls there are very friendly and make you feel welcome and the prices are reasonable especially for San Francisco. I recommend the Milvali and especially Hanna(!) to anyone! -

Got the best haircut of my life here! My long, same-length, boring hair was cut into pretty layers that look fantastic in curls. I walked out of the salon feeling like a million bucks. And the best part was - I didn't look like I had just gotten a haircut (don't you hate that awkward fresh haircut look)? I just looked like I had great hair!
I also got tips for curling my hair outward so that the curls frame my face more nicely. I've gotten so many compliments on my hair since the cut, and since I've started curling my hair outwards. Love love love.
I'm so glad I found Milvali. I'm going in for regular cuts every 2 months so as to avoid reverting back to looking like Cousin It. -

I absolutely am in loovvveee with Milvali. I have been a very happy client of theirs since summer 2009. Sophie is my girl and you really can not find stylists like her anymore. She is so very professional, gregarious, and in-tune with what her clients need! I know she's out ill for a bit...but hopefully she will be back soon! SOPHIE WE MISS YOU!! I do not mind having another stylist at Milvali style my hair, they are very professional and take their work very seriously. I did have a not-so-great cut a while back by one of their new stylists. I was up front and spoke with Karen, who is, by the way, the most friendly and punctual lady ever! After having that not-so-great cut they were so eager to make up for it..from a discount on my cut that day to offering discounts on products I use, THEY ARE TRULY A GEM IN THIS CITY! Very much recommended!

I'll just get right to the point. The owner of Milvali seems extremely unprofessional and really takes away from the relaxing experience that one should have while at a salon. She always seems stressed or bothered by something and seems to take it out on her employees. I've witnessed numerous times when she's talked down to her employees in front of clients and it makes the tension in the room super tense (it's a small enough salon as is!)
I was also overcharged by $100 when my charge was put through. Whoever added the tips and put through the final charge def added another zero to what I had written...I'm not sure if it was intentional or not but regardless I called immediately and got my money back! It was just an unnecessary hassle to deal with.

Finally, I got a really good haircut in SF that didn't cost an arm and a leg! I went to Sophie and she was wonderful. I had gotten a cut a Oxenrose a few weeks ago, and was really unsatisfied. Sophie instantly saw the problem, and like a total professional she didn't bash the previous hairdresser; but instead told me how she could fix it and asked me what I was hoping to accomplish with my haircut. She recommended some new shampoo and a styling aid I had never heard of before, all without pressuring me to purchase anything.
Tonight was an all around a great experience, the price was great, the staff was very friendly. I have been to a lot of mediocre salons and this one totally felt right. Thank you Sophie.

I have been struggling to control my long, thick curly hair for my entire life...i had my first appointment with Sophie and it was the best experience of my life. I did the keratin treatment which was well worth the money, i can actually get out of the shower and leave my house without spending an hour on my hair now! My hair is so much healthier and softer now too.I have never cut my hair either and sophie and i decided on bangs...I am so happy with them! i receive so many compliments everyday and i can get ready so much faster now...Overall I love love love my hair. Sophie walked me through the whole entire process and gave me great hair tips along the way. Outstanding service.

I really hate my haircut. I'll be honest, it's not the worst I've ever had. However, I am really disappointed. I usually go to a girl that is so great, I just moved and this place is a lot closer to where I live and my friend said that she got a good trim from here, so I thought I would try it out.
It's an okay cut and she did what I asked, but she didn't do it in a way that actually looks good on me. It's like she has no sense of what works on peoples faces. I've never had my bangs look worse, it's like she did something special to them so that they don't look good, no matter what I do to them.

I love Milvali, and its amazing owner, Deb. She's probably the coolest, most delightful and talented stylist I've ever had, which makes a visit to Milvali fun and relaxing--I just know I'm in great hands.
Deb has a great eye for details, and it doesn't stop with hair. She has this cunning ability to push you just outside your comfort zone so you walk out looking like you, only 100 times sexier! I've seen her work miracles with hair extensions that look so unbelievably natural, your jaw drops. Her staff is young and energetic, each with a unique style that makes this salon lively.
Milvali also carries my favorite products by Bumble + Bumble and Kerastase, as well as Deb's own line of lovely mineral-based make-up. They do amazing color and make-up, as well as tinting and waxing.
So, just treat yourself already--you will feel and look terrific! -

Milvali is the best salon in Northern California! I have been getting my hair extensions there for 3 years and am always very pleased. The environment at Milvali is also excellent. From Karen Kerr, the manager Hannah Armstrong and Jackie A. who are both stylists that have worked on me. Bottom line, Milvali is outstanding. I recommend the salon to anyone from haircut, color, extensions, waxing to airbrush tanning.

So, I like my regular hairstylist. I really do. She's my go to gal for fantastic color and cuts. I always get compliments on my hair. However, the latest cut she gave me was way too short. I am not typically that vain, but I hated this cut too much to wait 2 months for it to grow out. When I first learned about extensions a few weeks ago, I was pretty skeptical. My first thoughts were 'Have I been living under a rock? Why did I not know about extensions? Why did I painfully and needlessly grow my hair out for my wedding?' Oi.
I went to Milvali for hair extensions, just so I could have some hair while my hair grows out. Deb did my consultation. Lita did my extensions and I couldn't be happier. There was a bit of a disconnect because Lita didn't do my consultation, so she didn't know that I wanted pieces close to my bangs to cover them up. She was able to find some mini pieces in her stash and solve the problem. She did an amazing job matching my hair color and even picked an additional shade closer to my natural color, so they will blend when my hair grows out. She explained to me how to care for my new locks and even showed me some cool styling tips. She was wonderful. I really enjoyed chatting with her while she worked. She is down to earth, pleasant and does a fabulous job with extensions. Go Lita and Deb!

This place is FANTASTIC, and exactly what I had been looking for. After my fiance ran across it, and the reviews for their other location in Mill Valley, she insisted in getting her hair done there. Deb did a terrific job with her extensions, and her color came out gorgeous.
I quickly dropped my old salon and booked my next appointment w/ Courtney. She did a terrific job and my hair looks great. The girls were fantastic, and their style and look blends in very well with the upscale look of the salon.
I've already got my next appointment booked, and can't recommend this place and Courtney enough! -

This was my first ever. The results were fine. I looked golden when I got to Mexico, by the time it washed off, I had my ownt tan going. If you're going to be in water all the time, it's not going to last a full week.
So the tanning was fine, but Todd was great. He's thorough and helpful and professional. I forgot a diamond necklace from my parents there, and left him some emotional voicemails. He acted like he deals with high-strung, forgetful ladies every day. He left me a very sweet and reassuring message and kept the necklace safe for me. Bless him. -

Sophie is a hair goddess and my savior. I literally considered shaving my head before Sophie restored my hair confidence!
She understands the highly technical art of being a colorist! I have been struggling to return to a more natural and beautiful hair color that compliments my skin tone for over a year now after a disastrous self-inflicted bleach experiment gone wrong. After several budget breaking appointments at other overpriced SF salons I was less and less happy with my hair each time I got it done and the last time I left with a sick-to-my-stomach feeling like I had just been financially violated. My hair went from long, thick and luxurious to broken, frizzy and an embarrassing Neapolitan of dark brown - platinum - bronzey orange...in that order.
Sophie listened to what my concerns were and to what I wanted - and then she took the time to explain the corrective coloring process and what results I could reasonably expect to see. She was wonderful about giving me an honest consultation and even though I was really nervous, she did an absolutely gorgeous spot on job of matching my hair color to my eyes (a deep golden honey brown) that now makes my eye color really pop!! I have to admit that it took some getting used to at first - but I love it more and more every time I see it!! I received so many compliments today and I feel like I am glowing with radiance again from head to toe. I owe it all to Sophie's genius and skill! THANK YOU SOPHIE!!! -

I got my make up application here few months ago to attend my friend's birthday party and I forgot the lady who did my make up application but she did a very good job.
I looked like a royalty and ended up buying one of Milvali lip gloss that she applied on my lips, beautiful work, very natural yet looked very glamorous. The price is okay it's worth it ;0)
I will be back to get my hair up do and make up application again next month to see the Nutcracker.
Staff are very friendly and I'll be sure to come back if I need to get make application or hair up do for special occasion or just a night out in town. -

I got a spray tan here before a trip to San Diego and the results were so great! Karen was very helpful and I was thrilled with how consistent the tan was and how authentic the color looked. (My friends do not miss much and would relish the opportunity to have a laugh at my expense if they caught me with a spray tan gone bad, and not one noticed that this perfect tan was done in 5 minutes at Milvali!) :-)

I have gone through quite the rollercoaster of salon experiences in my life - started going to my Mom's stylist, who while good at her job, was more suited for someone 4x my age at the time. After that I got a stylist in college at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo who was fantastic - I was constantly complimented on my color and my cut, even by people who went to much pricier salons. I was afraid I'd never find the same. After college I moved to SF and went to a really expensive stylist at an Aveda salon - a great experience, but I didn't feel like THAT much was done to my hair; it looked almost the same, but my wallet was a whole lot emptier.
I asked around to my girlfriends who lived in SF, especially the ones whose hair I liked. My friend Katie L. (who wrote a review on 4/3/08) recommended I go see Amy at Milvali because she loved her hair and had a nice new friendship to boot.
So I went to Amy the first time, on Katie's recommendation, and as soon as I walked in Amy was incredibly welcoming, down to earth, and willing to listen to what I wanted and didn't want. Luckily I didn't come in with some celebrity style that was impossible to imitate, and I actually really like it when stylists can kind of take the creative reigns for the most part. This was just Amy's style, and the first time I walked out of there I was incredibly happy with the cut and color. I had just started growing my hair out for the first time in years and wanted to play with my color a little bit. She worked with highlight tones that went really well with my dirty blond hair and also kept it young and fresh. I have now been going to Amy for 2 years and I always walk away with great hair and a fun evening to look back on.
Thanks for keeping my locks in order, Amy, even when other parts of my life aren't ;-) -

Aww. I love this place so much. I don't know who was on here saying bad things about Deb, because Deb totally rocks. She's super professional, and from what I saw, is a friggen extension master.
If you want highlights, go to Britnee. She gave me the best highlights I've ever had. I've been getting highlights for like 10 years now, so I feel like I'm a pretty good judge of bad, okay, good, and great highlights. Britnee definitely falls into the category of great. Also, not only is she a fantastic hairstylist, she's totally adorable and very easy to talk to. She made 3 hours of sitting in a chair seem like 1 hour. She's great. Milvali is great.
If you know what's good for you, go to Milvali immediately!! -

This place is amazing. Such a friendly, happy place to go get beautiful. They do everything- extensions, hair styling, waxing, lash and brow tinting and bridal services. And the staff is awesome.
If you're going to get your eyebrows/waxing done in the city, Erin D. is the girl to see. Trust me, I've been a client for years and won't go to anyone else.
Go right outside and get a glass of wine at Beetlenut afterwards. It's the perfect afternoon! -

Suzy has arrived! I've been getting my brows waxed for years by miss Suzy and hands down---She is the one and only go to person for impeccable service! Not only do you receive spot on treatment with perfection, but an outgoing, down to earth woman who engages you, and over time, becomes a friend! I'm so happy Suzy has moved onward and upward from Benefit. Her space is cozy and comfortable, and PRIVATE!! No more waxing with passerby's in on the action! Trust me...you want your brows done here, and by Suzy.

I am always in search of a great salon in San Francisco. For me the requirements are: in my neighborhood, friendly staff, an atmosphere that isn't too snooty or high-fashion, a great price and easy appts. My recent experience at Milvali fulfilled all the criteria to a T.
I had my cut with Brittnee who is very friendly and highly experienced, even though she is new to this particular salon she grew up in a "hair biz" family and has interned in London. The perfect amount of girl talk mixed with a killer head message resulted in just the right cut. Unfortunately, my profession dictates a somewhat boring hairstyle (I'm a dentist) and Brittnee completely understood the necessity for being able to pull it back on the week days (gotta be hygienic!) and style it up a bit on the weekends. I am completely satisfied, and will definitely be back. Thanks Brit! -

Where do I begin?
October - I was looking for a hair salon that also did makeup for me and my wedding party and came across Yelp! reviews of Milvali. I decided to go in for a test run and fell in love with the place. Not only did Lindsay totally understand my vague instructions for what I wanted during the trial, but it came out better than I imagined. Next, owner Deb did a great job with my makeup and I got a fabulous eyebrow arch and color.
December - Needing to convince a wary friend, I made appointments for us to get our hair and makeup done before her parents' holiday party. Again Lindsay worked her magic and had another convert.
May - Wedding day. The ladies at Milvali not only did a fabulous job with my mom and bridesmaids hair and makeup, but we had a great time for the 5 hours we were at the salon. We were able to bring in food and drinks and just lounge around. A totally relaxing experience on my wedding day. My hair and make-up turned out better than the trial. I LOVED my hair and makeup, I mean seriously LOVED. I received so many compliments and have been asked by several people where I had both done.
I currently live out of town, but will go back to Milvali any time I'm back and will DEFINITELY pay a visit to Lindsay and Deb should I have a special occasion. Thank you ladies for helping make my wedding day so special!
