Neighborhood: University of TexasThe dressing! It's crazy good. There is no better Greek salad on earth. I mean it. But the dressing. Anything I get at Milto's ends up dipped in that dressing. I have tried to duplicate it at home (letsee...oregano, olive oil, umm...white wine vinegar? Garlic?) and have failed repeatedly. They have emulsification down to an art.
Yes, great pizza and gyros, too.

Just went to Milto's for the first time based on the reviews on Yelp. I live close by but never seemed to find the urge to drop in before - maybe because parking looks scary. Went with spouse and two small wiggly boys. Good forum for aforementioned kids - place is bustling and lively, so reasonably well behaved kids don't seem to bother others. Too bad I don't have any reasonably well behaved kids - ha ha. But I digress.
Got a thin crust cheese pizza for the boys and two large Greek salads and the combo Greek plate for the parents. Pizza was excellent, combo plate (gyro, chicken and souvlaki) huge and tasty, but it was the salads that totally rocked. A HUGE plate of chilled greens with red onion, bell pepper, olives, cukes, tomatoes and a generous smattering of feta. Large salad came with 2 soft warm garlicky yeast rolls right out of the oven. We took home about 1/2 of our food, there was so much. Total = $32 - quite acceptable for such great food. I can't believe I've lived so close by for 10 years and have never come here before. Well that's about to change, my friend.

After slagging on El Greco and mentioning that I'd rather take my business here, I realized that I hadn't reviewed the wonders of Milto's yet!
This is pretty much everything you could ever want in a Greek/Italian joint. Tasty entrees and salads at prices that really can't be beat! I've occasionally been disappointed by the portioning, but more often than not, it's just the right amount of food... if not a scosche too much. The partner and I usually share a Greek salad and then mooch off of each other's entree of choice... tasty, tasty subs (which aren't really like subs at all), spaghetti, ravioli, or gyros. The "T" sauce on the gyro is AWESOME... you know, that white yogurty stuff with hints of cucumber, sometimes dill, and mint. On the last visit, we ordered an extra side of it to dip the equally awesome bread into. Also, they deliver and are open relatively late. Huge plusses for me!
I'll have to try the pizza next time.

Greek food ? ? Pizza?? 1st off The food gave me a belly ache. The kabob sandwich was horrible and that sauce they try to pass off as cucumber sauce is disgusting! That sauce is traditionally made with yogurt not sour cream. The salad dressing is terrible and whats up with that awful bun they try passing off as bread. it tastes like balled up pizza dough. My friend and I also shared a pizza and it was awful too. I'd give them no stars if I could.

Love this little cafe. It's small but has a huge menu and gyros available to go. The reason it doesn't get 5 stars is the counter girl with the HUGE attitude problem we dealt with on Sunday.
Other than that, tons of charm and convenience.

Milto's is pretty darn good. Their artichoke Sicilian pizza is oh-so-yummy! Wow. More places should put artichokes on their pizzas! The grape leaves are pretty yum too. Great for a take-out dinner at home!
I really love Milto's with a passion. Their garlic knots make me salivate and are even better than the ones at Home Slice. Mmm, garlic knots. I especially love that they come with the greek salad, which is a staple order of mine. AND, if you order the large greek salad, it comes with two garlic knots! Yes, that is other-worldly in my book.
The service here is quick and without frills, but friendly. You go up to the corner, order, then find a seat and wait until they call your name. They have a roll of paper towels at every table, something I really like, as I am a chronic napkin user because I involuntarily ball the napkin up after one wipe, leaving no remaining surface for wiping. Your order is up in no time if you get something like a salad, and as soon as it comes out of the oven if you order pizza.
You can get pizza by the slice, along with a slew of Italian or Greek style items. I wouldn't call this place traditional Greek, but it's fast, easy, good for the price, and I always leave with a smile. Oh, and they have really good salad dressing that I should have mentioned earlier.

Talk about an Austin icon. This Greek diner has been around for over 30 years and continues to bring in the crowds. I enjoy the pizza and the gyros although I prefer my bread more doughy, yet crisp on the bottom. Milto's has attracted a following that will keep it around another 30+years. UT students and all of Austin should be proud of this one of a kind authentic Greek diner

Milto's is definitely something that I will miss about Austin. Whenever my Ma visited me on the 40 acres I took her here. Whenever I wanted to take a lady out for a casual, but cozy dinner this was the place. My very first meal here was in 1999...I had the sweet sausage cacciatore, thin crust pepperoni pizza with jalepenos, the house salad, and a glass of hibiscus tea. I was so enamored by the taste that every single time I ever went back I got the exact same thing. Hey, it was that damned good; what can I say except that Milto's is a must when you're in Austin, Texas. You might want to keep the party limited to two as there is not a great deal of room. However, the minimal capacity actually adds to the appeal of this place.

Beware the gyros (or lack thereof) "lunch" sham-a-lamma-ding-dong. I ran in here because A) I had about 2.5 seconds for lunch and it was the first place I drove past that looked decent on the Drag and easy to get in/out of fast and B) I had vague fond memories of the pizza back when I lived here seven years ago.
I ordered the chicken gyro "lunch" because I didn't have time to wait for a pizza, and I thought it would be a little bit healthier than something deep-fried or slathered in cheese. Little did I know, when i opened my to-go bag back at my desk, that they only issue you one paltry gyro with no sides and some just-ok cucumber sauce. ONE gyro. Did you get that? Why so stingy there, Mr. Ebenezer Milto?? I just shelled out like $8 for this bitch. And it wasn't that great. Meat was good but the pita was chewy and doughy. Even the Diet Pepsi (well of COURSE they don't have Diet Coke!) was flat.
I noticed that it was right at noon and yet there was only one occupied table. At the time, I thought this was a boon because I was in such a hurry. Now, I think I know why, if their pizza is as much of a ripoff as the chicken gyro was. It makes me want to call over to Greece and have some real Greeks pelt 'em senseless with large meatballs and kalamatas.
Plus what's up with it trying to be an Italian joint AND a Greek joint? Obviously they're not doing the Greek part right; they might as well devote themselves to one and quit trying to multi-task. Because that's not working out too well.

Milto's is at the top of my list for pizza and salad. The food is tasty and predictable. I also enjoy the casual atmosphere. Also, for a restaurant on the drag it is...well....clean! Big plus for comfortable seating outside. The staff is friendly and the service is very fast.

I really love Milto's food.
The yeast rolls that are offered with the salads are the right amount of chewy/crispy/moistness that make a roll so edible.
The gyros are flavorful and perfect for one person. (I do wish they would serve fries or a small greek salad with the gyro.) :(
The best pizza is the Milto pizza which is loaded with meat, standard veggies and green and black olives. LOVE IT!
The dress is casual and the crowd is eclectic. Staff are friendly but beware of crowds.

I had just gotten our of class with a friend one day, and we were trying to figure out where to have lunch. She suggested Milto's. I had never eaten there and had only had Greek inspired food once or twice. I have to say...I was very pleasantly pleased!. I ate their lunch special, which was a spaghetti with bread and a salad. It was great! I will definitely be going back there again.

Haha. I haven't been to Miltos in 20 years, but they get five stars from me. Why?
When I was in high school in Austin, they were the only place (besides a pretty shady Chinese joint on the other side of Guadalupe) that served beer to minors. Pitchers of beer to 17 year olds. What person would not keep this place high on the list of memories - now that "the weight of the world has got me down, and I want to end my life"?
I can't say that I ever even ate anything there. But the beer was yummy.
Miltos has certainly been around a long time and for good reason. A very good pizza. Thick or thin it's pretty good. By no means the best in austin but pretty good. The wait staff is always friendly and good. The problem i have with them is the lasagna. I went at 11:00 am to ask questions as I didn't want pizza. This affords the kind of attention I wanted at the moment. I explained in detail the problem I have with MOST italian food, especially lasagna. TOO MUCH CHEESE! and not enough meat sauce with italian sausage in it. I explained how there has to be a balance and not just have cheese dumped on it by the truck load. The girl assured me this was different, that they do indeed strive for that balance and I would love it. I ordered with confidence KNOWING there would be a nice balance and enough meat sauce to make me rave about the place. I dug into the plate and guess what? TO MUCH CHEESE!!! as usual, with most of these places.

why did I not ever go to this place when I was at UT? Anyways, my girlfriend suggested we go and try it out.
I'll start off with what I've had. The first thing to catch my eye were the "subs". I tried the meatball sub... it was effing huuuuuge. the meatballs were huge and the pocket bread itself is as well. The thing was the size of my face. Now I bet you're wondering how large my face is! It comes with a dainty side of lettuce and diced tomatoes. I also got the Eggplant version, which was just as huge and tasty. However, the only thing I would complain about it is that it is slightly 1-dimensional, despite it's 3D proportion. After eating about 3-4 bites, I start to get tired of the taste. Hard to explain, but it's like if you're eating green beans, and you like them, but it's ALL you get to eat and there's a poopload of it! Don't get me wrong, it's fantastic, but I suggest getting a salad with it....
The salads I have never had. But they look really good. I see lotsa people getting them and I can't help but want to be the rabbit they are. The gyros and other random things I have had were all very good too. However, the subs are still high on my list.
The other thing is that the pizzas look really good, but I haven't tried them.... well I did snitch a piece from an empty table... that had pizza left.... yes, sometimes I pose as a bum. It tasted good, but it was cold, so who knows. Maybe it fell on the floor?
Anyways, parking sucks there. might as well pretend you're going to I heart video or something. shhhh.

This place still has it. I have been coming here since I moved to town in the'80s. I recently went back to check it out and was pleasantly surprised at how good it still is. The nice thing, is that you can order a bit of everything and get out of there for a good price. I had thin crust pizza, Greek salad, and split a gyro. Everything was perfect, down to the hot roll you get with the salad.

I have also been here many times, but never have sampled their pizza. Maybe it's because the other items on their menu are so good. In particular, the sausage thing, yeah that was vague, but it has sausages and it's awesome, I get it almost every time I go here. The salads are good too, and so is the breat. And the sausage thing is great.

This place is pretty okay. I've known some people that have worked there before and they all say that the owner is a real jerk, but whatever.
The Stromboli is really good. They also have an appetizer called something like tyropita which is fried cheese triangles. Yummy
The main reason that I'm giving this place 3 stars is because they have some ravioli that's really good, but it's $6 and it leaves you hungry again in 30 minutes. They have several dishes like that that are over-priced and still leave you hungry.

Since I arrived in Austin I have been on a search for good Greek food. Each place seems worse than the last, until finally..... Milto's. Compared to Austin Greek food this place gets 4 stars, compared to other great Greek I've had it gets 2..... I'll leave it at about three. The Gyro was good, but I wanted more choices then just Gyro's. Seems like all the places in Austin think Greek food is only Greek Salad and Gyros..... Where are my Suvlaki's?
This place was a little frustrating because the Gyro cost me nearly 5 dollars and it didn't come with anything (rice?). The pita bread was great, and the chicken was pretty dang good too. This is the only Greek place I have found in Austin that I didn't give a 1 star review.... So its pretty descent. If I keep coming up empty on my Greek food journey then I will probably be back to Milto's.

Milto's is a great place to get some high quality food in a nice casual environment. Located across the street from Toy Joy and Buffalo Exchange, Milto's is a great place to stop for lunch when out shopping on the drag.
ENVIRONMENT:
The building in clean, offers a private lot and the interior decor is simple classy and interesting. It is never too hot in here or too cold and the place is always clean.
STAFF:
Staff are quick, knowledgeable and will gladly explain the menu and it's various options to you with clarity and professionalism. Delivery drivers are also very professional, actually carry adequate change and they are very quick.
FOOD:
If you have read any of my previous reviews you would know I am a very harsh gyro critic so when I tell you that the gryos here at Milto's are some of the best in the area, I mean it!! The gryos are great, the italian dishes are great. The servings are decent size, well prepared, made with quality ingredients and fairly priced.
CROWD:
This place can get very busy during the school year, so be prepared to wait a bit if it's a weekday around lunch time.
OVERALL:
Great food, great location, clean environment and did I mention that they deliver?
Check this place out if you are a fan of the Gyro, you'll love it. Make sure you get the Feta added on there, it makes even more heavenly.

Ive been here twice now, and cant say I was very pleased either time. I am a vegetarian, so maybe it is the meat that really adds the flavor, but the pizzas and the pasta that I had (I dont remember exactly what it was, but it was a red sauce and penne) were pretty bland. I found myself adding tons salt, pepper, red pepper, and parm to snaz up the flavor. Also the place is awfully dark.
I would still be willing to try it again with a good recommendation however.

I've been coming here since I was no taller than a lamb's knee.
Back then, someone else bought my food. Now that I'm self-sufficient or rather, completely destitute, I go here for the FINE garden salad with house dressing and an extra roll for a quarter, and it fills my bare skeleton just enough to stagger to the nearby park to take me a nap.
No, really: it's a relatively small, but filling and delicious meal for under $3 but you must tip so that's $4.
The rest of the stuff I've had here is delectable also, in times of prosperity.
I love Milto's!
The owner of Sweetish Hill brought me here for lunch once. Anything she loves, has got to be the best, and Milto's is just that.
I love their pizza, but I go for the salad. I'm not a big salad guy, but the Milto's salad is really good. It's so many veggies, and optional anchovies, and they put feta on it!!! And it comes with a yummy little garlic roll!!! YUM!!!
Another fun thing about Milto's is the decor. It's a little campy. It's not fancy at all. It is so Austin in that way. It's just a little place, no frills, that makes really great food.

The parking lot can be kind of a mess, and at lunch ordering at the counter can create a backup, but the staff is friendly and attentive and the food is generally solid to very good. The greek salads come with fresh rolls, made from their pizza dough, that are incredibly addictive.
Not sure what the earlier reviewer is asking for, as I have had souvlaki several times at Milto's.

I have been here a slew of times, and I am a little embarassed to admit that I've never had their pizza. I usually go when I have a craving for a good salad - their Greek salad just can't be beat, largely due to their AMAZING dressing (which they bottle and sell separately) and their to-die-for rolls, which I think must be made from their pizza crust dough. I usually order mine with grilled chicken or pepperoni on top, which only costs a buck or two more, then sprinkle crushed red pepper over the whole thing and enjoy. Not the greatest atmosphere - it's in an older, semi-run-down building, and it's counter service only, but it's worth a trip for the salad alone.

Last night I had a craving for Greek food. Usually, I'd just skip across the street to the Athenian Grill, but unfortunately they've closed and not yet re-opened at their new location. It's bumming me out.
Not really in the mood for a Pita Pit type deal, my friend and I headed to Milto's because I remembered getting a great Greek salad many moons ago, and where there's feta, maybe there's a gyro?
Italian and Greek food? How very Mediterranean of you, Milto. We showed up around 7:30. The four spot parking lot was full, so we parked around the corner, but there were plenty of tables inside.
My friend wondered if maybe they were trying to discourage us from getting the Greek food by putting on the back of the menu. No, I told him. Order away.
We each had a small Greek salad, one order of spinach dip, a carafe of wine, Mama Milto's beef gyro and a chicken gyro.
First things first: There is nothing small about the Greek salad. It's generously sized with lots of olives, tomatoes, and onions. Also, there was a slice of green pepper which kind of threw me off, but so be it. The dressing was deliciously tangy, almost mouth-puckering. I wouldn't have it any other way. The warm roll was an almost too delicious bonus.
The artichoke-spinach dip was passable. Very spinachy, almost no artichokes, and just a little cheese, but it did come with warm pita bread. I wouldn't order it again, but it wasn't bad. Just not my taste. (I prefer more cheesy deliciousness, less healthy spinach. It's a problem I'm not working on.)
The carafe of wine was so super cheap that I was skeptical, and rightly so. It was huge, but here it was truly a case of you get what you pay for. But for $6 bucks and change we finished that sucker off, even if it only tasted slightly better than old grape juice.
When it came to the gyros, our paths diverged. My friends beef gyro was DELICIOUS. Covered in a creamy cucumber sauce, the meet was well seasoned and was served on a giant warm pita. My chicken gyro was not so great. In fact, the chicken wasn't even gyro meat, but rather the chunks of chicken you might buy pre-sliced to put in a salad. (Know the ones?) It was so dry and flavorless not even the creamy sauce could help. I was disappointed, but perhaps not surprised. (I'll have to try Kebabalicious after today's ROTD).
I give this place three stars almost for the salad alone. And the fact that food was served super fast. The gyros seem like they're hit or miss, but most everyone else in the restaurant was putting away the pizza like it was their job, so maybe next time that's the way to go.

I used to have a neighbor named Chuck. When he moved away, we made a new motto: Meet me at Milto's. It was equidistant from our new places, so it was a good spot to catch up with good Italian and Greek food. I've tried pizza, vegetarian lasagna, greek salad - all fabulous!
Their inside little garden area is neat too... it feels like you're sitting half inside, half outside. Those kind of places remind me of when I visited Italy in college and consequently make me feel so cosmopolitan. Delicious, Milto's, and definitely the most authentic cafe in Austin.
Quick hits:
- Greek Salad = fantastic
- Gyro = good (typical), but could be a little bigger
- Italian Sausage Sub = fabulous! Ok - it's not really a sub, but rather like a square of focaccia cut in half, stuffest with italian sausage, sauce and cheese. Did I mention it's HUGE? Cheap too - only $4.85
Dang tasty.

They should rename this place - I don't think calling it a pizza pub is fair. To be honest, I've never tried their pizza. But their lasagna, gyros, and salads are just the thing your mother would like you to eat when you eat out. (Well, if you had a Greek or Italian, or maybe even a Mexican mother.)
I used to have a major crush on black olives, and then one day for no reason whatsoever, they completely disgusted me. This went on for years until I had the Greek salad at Milto's with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, green peppers, cucumbers, feta, and kalamata olives. I fell in love with olives right over again.
Milto's is my gyro!
p.s. Splitting a large salad and a gyro easily makes a delicious, light meal for two.

There's always that one business that you've passed hundreds of times but never bothered to give the time of day. I'm guilty of that with Milto's. When I finally did decide to face the facts and grab a meal there, I was pleasantly surprised.
At 29th & Guadalupe, this little Greek/Mediterranean cafe is charming, pleasant, and popular. With two small dining rooms and a patio, the restaurant probably can't house more than 75 people at a time, but this doesn't stop the line from forming. It seems to be a favorite dinner locale among families as well as couples, students and singles.
Milto's, open since the 70s, is officially called "Milto's Pizza Pub" and boasts proudly of being the first restaurant in Austin to serve pie by the slice. They have a well-rounded Italian/Greek/Meditarranean menu with wonderfully cheap prices. Pasta, pizza, stromboli, ravioli, lasagna, salads and pitas. They're also vegetarian friendly. I had a good-sized plate of spaghetti for $5.95. While the pasta was standard fare, the marinara sauce was quite good....hot and fresh with a subtle sweetness. Try a 5-slice plate of garlic bread for $1.95. A friend and I had two entrees, garlic bread, a salad, and a beverage for $17. Good deal. Good food.
Scrumptious.

Oh sweet salad...am I glad I stumbled upon Michelle's review. Once upon a time, I ate at Milto's 3 times a week. Always the salad, the bread, and the Stromboli. Always. Strangely, as my time on and near Guadalupe declined, so did my rememberance of this awesome little Greek-Italian-whatever dining spot. I had even forgotten the name until a scant few moments ago.
The Greek salad is absolutely awesome. The bread is fantastic - perfectly flavored and textured but melt in your mouth. The Stromboli is beyond tasty, it's beyond filling, and it's worth every penny of it's not-too-expensive price.
I haven't been to Milto's in years. I had long forgotten the name, but never forgotten the food. Perhaps a drive down for a refresher course is in order...

Milto's is one of the few Austin-run establishments that I will grace with my wallet when visiting town, when, for some ungodly reason, I happen to be in the old stomping grounds around UT.
All I've ever had at Milto's is the Gyro, but they do it right. Consistently. And they offer Hibiscus Iced Tea, which is awesome.
