This is the bar they used to film The Shining, isn't it? It's gorgeous, posh, Historic Downtown, all the way.
Expensive, but you wouldn't feel like you were really living it up unless you paid for the privelege, would you?
Next time I'll get the Brandy Alexander, per another reviewer. The bar charged extra for making our Manhattans with Old Granddad --a liquor that is actually at or below call (total for one drink: $16, which is more than other fancy pants places like the Marmont, I believe). I mean, we didn't order the rye expecting a discount, but we didn't expect to pay extra for less. Not very classy in the ignorance, but allowable. It was definitely a very large drink and one was more than enough.
Note to the Biltmore: tear out the TVs in order to preserve the feel of stepping into a world that existed before such items junked up every last room there is.
Very good cocktails, a nice upscale feel. Good bartending. Nice flat-screen TVs. I'd rather watch a game here than in the sports bar next door. Nonetheless, it is so pricey that I will deduct a star.
3.5
Located in the heart of the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Downtown LA. (yelp Millennium Bilmore Hotel in LA for your conveinience) Not your everyday Ritz Carlton or Westin Bonaventure. Scratch that, wayyy better than the Bonaventure.
Okay, given that the name IS GALLERY BAR, it did feel like I was in an artsy fartsy gallery, with chandeliers and comfy couches, with a touch of a beautiful painting on the ceiling. Very elegant, with so much *hm, whats the word?* totally poshy lounge, but so dead... wonder what it is like on Friday or Saturday... Remember, I came on a Tuesday evening.
(i apologize, my pictures are poor quality, it's from my blkberry pearl, and you know, quit complaining! i honestly wouldn't be taking pictures because it's embarrasin to an extent, but since no one was there, i just clicked away)
So I cheated and looked up what others had said about the Gallery Bar. LA Mag recognized this place as "one of the best places in town to have a cocktail."
Came here Independence Eve, and man, what in the HECK am I doing? Am I on a roll to get facked up once a week, and in the middle of the week? Last week was Library Bar.
Okay, so, its MY fault, wait, it's my FRIEND'S fault for lagging 2 hours late, as I stroll into the Biltmore Hotel with an empty stomach. Bad idea. Got facked up REAL fast... and yes, I did yack before I called it a night, and yet, I still feel nausea, even eating soup for breakfast the following morning.
H2o = $6 at a vending machine? Idk if that's true but my friend got the h20. Couldn't order no appetizer because the bar was closed. What the hail? It was only 9pm. ONLY APPETIZER I GOT was the stupid peanuts they give you.. wack!
Average drinks go from: $8-10. Price varies but they have a fine selection from champagne, martini, etc. LOL, I speak like an expert, but I'm just smart like that...
The atmosphere, well, it's Tuesday, and go figure, it was completely empty. Just me and my friend. Don't ask why we were here in the first place. Haha. Like seriously. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a ghost roaming around. You could probably hear a pin drop from 10 floors up. There were literally 8 ppl throughout the WHOLE ENTIRE NIGHT. We were there from 9-2am. Just drinking and lounging around like big farts. (It was me, my friend, and 2 women chilling by themselves, the bartender, the front desk agent, 2 valet guys, and a newlywed.)
Bottom Line : Do not make an attempt to come on a Tues, again, don't ask why and who says drinking has to be set on a weekend?
Bartender: Very accommodating, but then again, there was NO BODY IN THE DAMN HOTEL!
Front desk agent: What an asshole, very smart assy. don't ask, I can go on about this one.
PS: So, my friend and I took a sneak peek of a room, eh, idk, the TV was soo small. I guess if you call Motel 6 a 1 star, the room here, I'd give it a 3 stars. Bellagio/Venetian is byfar 5+. Room ranges from $150-229/night. (sry, I cheated because now I'm writing a hotel review)
Overall, classically elegant... it's my friend who ruined the evening.. kinda ... I hate late people! :p

This is what it's all about. This is the big time, the show, the major leagues.
Greg the bartender is a messianic figure of cocktail distribution. If you should order a beer here then you are truly lost. Order a martini. Order the Black Dahlia martini. Order a negroni. Order his specialty, a Brandy Alexander. It will be expertly prepared and delivered.
It's an ornate room with quite a history. Chat up the convention goers while they rack up tabs on their expense accounts or enjoy some live music. Eat the free snacks.
Have some self respect, bring your A game to the Gallery. That lame bar you always talk up with the PBR on tap will still be there tomorrow.
