Review from Marcus D.
Is it just me or does Snookie and her queer friends tie one on in here?
We were in here last night, stayed too long, but the Guinness kept coming and we had seats at the bar. There was a severely drunk Napolean Dynamite clone that nearly collapsed into a couple of tables and even approached us on his staggering feet, my date ignoring him, but a quick jab of the finger in his suprasternal notch (I think that's what it is) sent him on his way.
The men's room provided an interesting visit. A couple of dudes, one of them we had labeled "striped shirt" earlier in the night, and his buddy were having quite the exchange at the urinals, so I had to wait for the stall to free up, once inside I could feel the door behind me swinging in so I stuck out an elbow to close it and heard a female squeek, "oh is someone in there?!" Ummm, isn't this the men's room, but then again, in Boston, girls crash the men's room all the time (I hear we are cleaner).
The bartender was cool. My girl called him "Rusty" due to his short-cropped red hair and he heard her, which I'm sure if I called him that he would have leapt over the bar and laid me out (rightfully so) but he took it with good humor.
In my summing up, the Mile Square is a typical nesting place for Jersey hand jobs and girls that have feathered Princess Di hair. Oh, and the fat kid from SUPERBAD lookalike, that ended up being a chick. -

A. What happened to this spot? It used to be one of the higher end spots with a huge beer selection and a more of a restaurant/bar motif than a bar/restaurant motif.
B. The screaming drunk college girls playing beer pong at 2 in the afternoon was beat (it didn't help that they looked beat-up)
C. The bartender was cool enough
D. The nachos were edible enough
I will not hit again. -

Mile Square is not a dive bar, but the state of the restrooms and the vagrant chic of the clientele would have turned off even the saltiest patrons of many a Chinatown dive bar, like me.
A couple things irritated me...captain chubby cheeks-the bouncer had to turn us away at the door due to being over capacity. WTF? I'm staring into the restaurant window of an entire empty room. Don't shit in my mouth and tell me its a sundae okay? (This is my new NJ term that I overheard at the bar.)
Then Captain Chubby Cheeks the bouncer informed us that, "an arrangement could be made". Bahhh. We did eventually get in and I was smacked in the face with a flash back of University Inferiority Complex, then I remembered... I get to leave New Jersey...I really am the better person.
Overall not a bad place if you bring the party with you, take your tetanus shots before hand, and can avoid using the restrooms.
Thanks for enduring, Nancy. -

Chodes, New Jersey-style. The clientele were obviously extras from "Chasing Amy," and "The Sopranos." Russian hookers smoking outside in 18 degree weather wearing nohting but hotpants.
My only salavation was Nadja and Jasper, meeting their cool friends, and going to Johnny Rockets. -

I haven't eaten here, so I can't comment on the roaches, and I wouldn't have really cared anyway, as I usually go somewhere else to eat anyway.
This place has a pretty good (not outstanding) selection of microbrews and imports on tap. The times I went, they had both Stone Arrogant Bastard and Victory Golden Monkey on tap, which made me very happy.
What makes me like this place? Well, if you go to a Manhattan beer snob bar/pub on a Friday after work, the place is guaranteed to be absolutely packed, and you can be sure that you'll spend your entire visit standing up, elbow-to-elbow with others. If you go to the Mile Square after work, you can actually sit down to enjoy your snob beers in peace and not have someone constantly bumping into you, spilling your expensive snob beer all over your shoes. That really counts for a lot, in my opinion.Listed in: Only in Jersey, Beer!

Review from Alison C.
Mile Square has always seemed like one of those random bars on Washington Street, not quite cool enough to top your list and not quite dingy enough to be a hipster hotspot. I have stopped in once or twice for a quick drink, but was never there long enough to really form an opinion. However, I tried it out for dinner the other night and was decently pleased with my meal.
The calamari appetizer was a bit over-fried and tough, but the sweet marinara dipping sauce was so good that we found ourselves digging through the large plate fairly quick. My Arizona Chicken Wrap consisted of some tender grilled chicken, ripe avocado, fresh pico de gallo, and spicy red pepper aioli. The sandwich was fantastic! I chose a side salad for my accompaniment, but was not happy to find it drowning in salad dressing. My brother ordered the Chicken Scallopini, which was two large chicken breasts stuffed with sundried tomatoes, capers, and lemon juice.
Mile Square is a great place for some top class bar food and casual drinks, but do not expect to come here for a party. If you are looking for a crazy party, try drinking at The Shannon or some of the other bars around town. -

I am 35, and this was the absolute worst experience in a restaurant I have ever had, by far.
As you can see by my lack of reviews in the last year . . .it even brought me out of retirement. I felt obligated to let people know.
Let's start with the food. What I, and my two buddies, ordered is irrelevant, because we never received it. As a matter of fact, we're 99% sure it was never even ordered.
Drinks. I and one of my buddies ordered a Victory. We ordered it, from the host, 15 minutes after we sat down. 8 minutes after that is when it came. We also ordered water from him when we ordered the beer. We asked for water a second, third and yes, even a fourth time. I would comment on the water, but alas . . . that never came either. (despite at one point asking a different waitress for some as well.
Service. This, however I can comment on. Calling it service is a mild over-statement. And, by mild, I mean burning, flaming, spicy, ass melting over statement.
The host was completely incompetent, and the worst thing he could have done was actually walk over to our table and pretend to take our order and then never even get a server to put it in. Then those servers, who were completely overwhelmed with the 4 tables they had, just chose to ignore us since the host had technically started to take care of us.
We even gave them an out, "listen, it's cool if you never even put in our order, just let us know, so we can leave and go eat somewhere else" Not only did he never answer us, or bring us our water . . .when we finally (reluctantly) walked out of the building after putting $8 on the table, we saw the guy outside busing a table.
I still don't have my water.
I would never go here again, I wouldn't wish anyone go here either.
With literally hundreds of places to eat and drink in Hoboken. . .this one should go away for ever.
Sidenote: Yelp makes you give at least one star, otherwise this would have been a 1/2 star. -

After reading another review about how great the bar is at Mile Square, I felt obligated to yelp about the food. It is not good. They are trying to be fancy, but it just doesn't work.
This is a great place to go after work for a fancy microbrew. They do have an excellent selection of beers and the bar has plenty of room to enjoy your beer in peace. Just don't stay for dinner. -
Review from Ed A.
I find myself coming here almost every weekend. Don't come expecting a flashy NYC (or even upscale Hoboken) bar. It's a pretty simple bar and grill. I've only ever had a few appetizers here, and they were ok. I think they have half price appetizers at the bar during happy hour, which is a plus. I've been told the food here isn't that great, so I'll just mention that as well (never had a proper meal here though).
What makes this bar so good is that if you have a group of friends and you just want to hang out, this bar is very accommodating. There's no loud music or a dance floor (although if you want to dance you can go next door to Bahama Mama's or one of Hoboken's other nightspots). The bar is manned by 2 great bartenders; there's plenty of seats all around, so you can order your drinks and just relax at a table. They have a few TV's so you can watch a game while you enjoy your drink. Or you can just socialize and unwind.
This place is cool to start off the night with - or also to end the night. The key is to come with a group of friends; if you come alone to pick up chicks or with just a date, you'll probably walk away disappointed. The bar gets pretty crowded early in the night (10-11:30 ish) with people coming in to score quick drinks, but then starts thinning out around 12:30 or so.
The only downsides I can think of are the beers on tap are sometimes untasty. However, they regularly have $3 soco lime shots, as well as assorted specials. They used to have a DJ who played 80's and 90's music every weekend, but unfortunately he is no longer there. They also have about 30 different beers on tap I think, and a pool table in the back. Definitely worth a shot next time you're in Hoboken. -

I have only been to mile^2 once and my experience was not so good. Upon entering the bar I had three goals in mind: Drink beer, order bar food, and watch the yankee game.
Goal 1 - Drink beer
While mile^2 is known for (and does) having a good beer selection, that doesn't get you anywhere if the bartender will not take your order. He was too busy watching the yankee game (my goal, not his). He also was drunk... at 8PM... on a tuesday.
Goal 2 - Order bar food
successful after resolving the aforementioned d bag bar tender. Ordered wings and pulled pork sliders. Wings were ok, sliders meh. Food did come out very fast, but still bartender sucked
Goal 3 - Watch Yankee game
This was successful but we were at the end of the bar so their tv's aren't well placed for end-to-end viewing. nonetheless this goal was achieved both by me and my absent-mined bartender. -

Mile Square has degenerated to the point of making me sad. I hate to see this happen to what used to be a great bar/grill with an extensive food and drink menu.
overbearingly loud music, TVs thrown everywhere for information overload, and...beer pong?
only came because it was my friend's birthday and he wanted to go here after we all had dinner elsewhere.
I shed a tear for the glory that was the Mile Square.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Kemi A.
Was here as part of a group event. The place was neither here nor there. It was decent. I had beer and we ordered appetizers. It was a pretty dead mid-week night so we were the only crowd there basically.
It was okay...just another bar I guess. -
Review from Nicole L.
This is my third time here, and I will say that it was definitely not a charm. (Bad play on words, I know). We got the wings again as an appetizer, and this time, they must have changed the hot sauce because it was had a much stronger vinegar flavor. It was still pretty ok, but not nearly as enjoyable.
My husband and I both got the Mile Square burger and asked for it cooked medium. They both came out well done and completely flavorless. The texture was not like normal ground meat, and not in a good way at all!! Also, they charge $1.00 per topping (including, cheese, pickles, onions, etc - what a way to jack up the price).
Finally, we got a tiramisu and a cheesecake. The server admitted that the deserts were store bought... so we didn't have very high expectations. Even worse, for $6, the cheesecake was the saddest piece of $hit I ever saw served at a restaurant. It was very small; and looked and tasted like one of those $10 cheesecakes you get from shoprite that has been pre-cut into 10 or 12 pieces. SUCH A WASTE to get it. The tiramisu was not as bad as the cheesecake and they also cut a decent portion.
I might go back to give them one more chance, but my expectations will be pretty low if I do so.1 Previous Review: Show all »

This place is not good. I used to go because my boyfriend loved their all you can eat brunch, but as good a deal that is (in term osf QUANTITY, not quality) I've managed to stop going.
Food basically tastes like it was cooked the day before and they're giving you leftovers. If you get a pasta with alfredo sauce, the sauce that you get is think and room temperature. If you get nachos, they're stale. If you get calamari, they're not crunchy, and they're either stale or soggy.
Just don't go. -

I was certain I'd Yelped the Mile Square, as I've actually been here three times. I suppose it's a good thing, though, as I can now Yelp both the good- and the bad.
THE GOOD- Their menu for dinner. They have good drink prices. I'm obsessed with their french fries. Their burgers and wraps. Did I mention the fries? They're like McDonald fries, which I understand is not actually great, but they're like crack. French fries, french fries, french fries.
THE BAD- Their brunch. Went with my honorary northern family this past Sunday and had a terrible experience. Their "three egg omelettes" were tiny. Their side portions were small. They brought out one of our side orders a good twenty minutes before anything else. They never refilled our water. They subbed out green peppers for red peppers without telling us they would in all of the omelettes. The breakfast pizza had onions even though it didn't say it would on the menu, and when it was sent back- and promised it would only take five minutes- it took a good twenty. They had to be prompted to give us butter for toast, and salt and pepper. But the real clincher? They CHARGED for coffee refills, and did not say that they would.
I've had such a good experience the other times for dinner that I'd possibly go back, but never for brunch. Avoid, avoid. There are too many good brunch places on Washington to make this mistake. -

I picked to go to this restaurant because I got a $25 gift certificate from http://restaurant.com, but I gotta say these other reviews scared the crap out of me. However, I'm happy to report that there must have been a change in management and/or renovations to this place, but it was nothing like all these really really really bad reviews spoke of.
The place looks pretty new and clean, with nice dark wood tables and a nice big bar area. I was expecting the service to be crap, but the waitress was pretty nice and told us they were running a special of buying two entrees and getting a free appetizer. The food was decent - your standard American pub fare, but they use Texas Toast instead of burger buns, which is actually pretty yummy. I had the Arizona wrap because I have a love of avocados as of late and it was delicious. For dessert we had creme brulee which had the nice crispy sugar crust, but oddly enough it was cold on the inside. Oh well. The waitress also told us they only had decaf coffee, which is weird, but whatever. She let me take home a pint glass (I like collecting them, leave me alone) so she's a-OK in my book.
Overall a pretty decent dinner experience, but maybe it was because I was expecting the worst and was pleasantly surprised. -

Tough Crowd here for Mile Square
My story goes like this... Came back from Thanksgiving on Sunday and got dropped off in Hoboken. Long week with the family and the 4 hour drive back had me craving a beer like no other (plus we were still in time to catch the 2nd half of the Giants game).
After dragging our bags up and down Washington st finding that most bars were packed, we finally came across a half empty Mile Square. I thoroughly enjoyed myself here. They had a nice selection of microbrews and they were all $2 off the already cheap beer prices. We drank IPAs all afternoon for $2 a draft and watched football.
Most of you are right, the food left a little to be desired, but wasn't terrible. I wouldn't go to the Mile Square for a nice meal, instead go for the cheap beer.
4 stars for not being packed, big screen TV with the giants on, cheap good beer. -

I am a fan. That much is clear. But perhaps I'm a simple guy...after looking at all the other reviews here I felt like I was personally being slapped in the face for loving the Mile Square.
It is a simple place. Good beer, decent sandwhiches, and a crowd generally ranging from 21-26. Its mostly the beer stop for Stevens and other near college aged people.
I like it to get a night started. Have a few drinks and then end up somewhere in Manhattan if you want to dance or one of the fancier places in Hoboken for your real go out nights.
It was also my constant home for post-night-class beers and a bite to eat. -

The best term to describe "Mile Square" is starter bar.
Mile Square has such a huge selection of beer, I was impressed.
What was not impressive was the food. I had the fish 'n chips and it was average. Then again, I was not expecting a high quality meal. The party I was with enjoyed their food.
The staff was not bad from what I remember. I would have to say that the worst part was asking her opinion on what beer to get. She recommended the "blithering idiot." I felt like a blithering idiot after I took a sip because I thought it was gross.
Another inconvenience was the atmosphere. I guess we went a little too early so there was not that many people. They were also playing country music which ruined the starter bar mood.
I would only come back here again to get a few drinks or to try something else on the menu as an experiment. -

Jersey City, NJ
I'm not really a drinker, but I used to come to Mile Square at least once a month to eat and the food was great. They recently changed chefs and the menu is about a quarter of the size it used to be and pretty much everything I ate is gone; I definitely can't come with my vegetarian girlfriend; she used to LOVE their pumpkin ravioli and now all they have are a handful of salads and probably a veggie burger, which probably won't stand out from any other restaurant.
I saw the menu the day they debuted it and I haven't been back since, so maybe it's changed, but I doubt it. Probably won't be heading back there again with so many other options available. -

Huge beer range, friendly service, great mac and cheese, and a pool table. My only problem? My umbrella smelled of piss after sitting on the floor for a few hours.

Whoa! Calm down on hating this bar. Its the perfect in-between bar if you're sick of all the Hoboken Irish pubs and the Hoboken hipster dance clubs. There are so many times my friends and I will go into Hoboken and we always tend to gravitate towards Miles Square. Maybe it's the great beer selection, maybe it's enjoying a little personal space, who knows. I like it if I'm looking for a chill time.

The first and only time I came here there were roaches on the wall. Yes, I know roaches are everywhere. But generally they stay hidden until it's dark. This one, and several others were just hanging out, enjoying the scenery and eyeing my turkey burger (which was mediocre to begin with). Won't be going back there.

C-L-O-S-E-D!! Thank God man! What a horribly run excuse for a restaurant/bar with consistently terrible service and a kitchen that could never create a good menu and cook anything worth stuffing in my mouth. THREE CHEERS FOR CAPITALISM AT IT'S FINEST! :-)

This place is terrible. And even if a place is this bad I will give credit for the decor, but I cannot tell a lie. The place is empty, yet it takes lightyears to bring the food. I have been here twice. The first time I went it was bad but I went again, since the party I was with had chosen to go. Thank God i did not pay the second time or i would have been damn mad! I was not expecting much as a native New Yorker, but all the places i have been to in Hoboken have been pretty good. The fish &Chips, bad. The Mile Square burger, even worse. The beer selection, impressive. The bartender, clueless. Simply put i will not be returning her again.

Review from Stephen S.
Pittsburgh, PA
Worst dining experience I've had since moving to the area! This was horrible! We only came because we had been given a gift certificate from someone out of state, and now I kind of wished we had thrown that away and cut our losses.
We got the appetizer sampler, which took forever to come. The calamari were round donuts of something that was not calamari. The quesadillas were cold. And the mini burgers were nothing more than tiny beef patties that had been placed on hot dog rolls that were cut in half--I guess it was too expensive to splurge for something fancy, like dinner rolls.
We both ordered the fish and chips. Our first clue something was wrong should have been when our waitress stared at us with a vacant face when we asked for malt vinegar for the fries. It literally took her 15 minutes to come back and let us know that no one in the kitchen had ever heard of such a thing, but they had plain vinegar if we wanted that.
Additionally, the meal was supposed to come with tartar sauce and cole slaw. They didn't bring us either. When we asked about it, our waitress said it was because they didn't have enough cole slaw for both of us, so they didn't bring it for either of us. When I pressed about the tartar sauce, I was told they were "making it" in the kitchen. It never actually came until we were leaving, and (I swear I'm not making this up!) it was literally a container of mayonnaise. MAYONNAISE!
I could go on about the horrendous details of the service or how our waitress tried to throw the bus boy under the.....bus for her shortcomings, but it wouldn't be worth it. Just do yourself a favor and don't go. -

they have something there called running the mile , where for $40 bucks u get about 4-6 oz. of each of the 30 beers they have on tap... u get a piece of paper where u can write the name of the beer and wat u thought of it... and if u dont have the turpitude to finish it in one sitting u can come back another day.... well i finished mine in one day and i want my t shirt..... other than running the mile and the breakfast burger i wouldnt suggest going there .... its almost always empty and the atmoshpere sucks... besides the hot ass waitress that im sure doesnt even work there anymore there is no point going -

3 weeks later and I'm still trying to figure out this place. Did they just open up that second room? When we first walked in they said there would be a 15-20 minute wait yet there was hardly anyone in the room to the right. It appears like it wants to be a trendy place but they haven't quite set up the room yet. The bathrooms were disgusting, and the place could use an overall cleaning, luckily I recognized this after eating. The food was surprisingly tasty, a tad over fried, but well that usually leads to some good tasting food. The bar didn't look stacked with much. I just wouldn't waste my time with so many other bars and restaurants on Washington.
