Great how-you-want-it salads.
I came here to get an oatmeal raisin cookie at 10pm. It was wrapped in saran wrap and it looked pretty good, but it was $1.75!
The cookie tasted like plastic. I couldn't finish it and i'm pretty sure i'm gonna get cancer. I guess i should have known better than to get a cookie at 10pm, but they should probably not wrap it in saran wrap or at least let it cool before doing so. The cookie didnt taste very good besides the plastickyness anyways.
it gets 2 stars because the lady at the counter had pretty eyes. heh heh.
on first glance, milano looks great. it really does.
but... it's not. the sandwiches are a joke. the staff behind the sandwich counter don't listen. can't tell you how many sandwiches i've had that have been made wrong (tomatoes when i didn't ask for them, mustard but no mayo, mayo but no mustard, vinegar when asked for just oil, etc...). a consistent problem with them that ultimately led me to stop going there.
also: they sell fresh ricotta. but only by the pound. in store-packed containers. why they cant break up the packs and sell less (oh, i've asked), i'll never know.
an overpriced place that preys on columbia kids who don't know better (and don't have anywhere else reasonable to go).
such a great chicken parmigiana sandwich.
it cost money, though. i was surprised they didn't give it to me for free.
Milano market is like those awesomly cute shoes you want to buy but are just a little too much ...... The food is great but pricy! Salad with 6 toppings is over $8 so you might as well go for the unlimited toppings, I mean what's another $1, until you are walking down the street scratching your head about how you just paid about $10 for a salad...
This is a great lunch place! Don't get too excited because there aren't any places to sit. Perhaps they can invest in a little outside seating area. I know it's just a market but it has the potential to be a little cafe. Plus, you can't just sell delicious food and expect people to wait until they get back to their offices to eat. What if they want to eat it right there and then!?! You have to provide adequate space for them to do so. Ridiculous!!!
Well, the food is good but needs a few adjustments. Today I had the 1/2 lb. of the spinach, tomato and feta pasta, and the 1/4 lb. of tomato, basil, mozzarella salad. Both delicious. However the salad wasn't salty enough and the pasta was a little too salty. My suggestion: take some of the salt you used for the pasta and put it on the salad. I know! I'm a genius!
Yesterday I had the mozzarella, tomato and basil sandwich with balsamic vinegar. I hated the bread. It was some sort of a cheesy bread with olivey stuff on it. Not good. They should switch it with the bread they use for the mozzarella, tomato, basil and chicken sandwich. I think that would be a more successful combination.
And on tuesday, I had the spicy salmon sushi. You really have to like salmon to order this for lunch. No, I mean "really" like it because there is a half a ton of salmon in each sushi bite. But on a brighter note, the sushi rice was cooked perfectly unlike the sushi in Morton Williams or in M2M, which are a block away from this joint.
Despite all of my complaints, I still gave this place 4 stars because I'll be back there tomorrow and I don't want anyone spitting in my tomato, basil, mozzarella concoction. Not that they have in the past. I'm just saying...
The #10 - enough said.
Really cute store. I keep coming back for their coffee beans. They have a very good selection at a very good price. They even have a Peanut Butter Coffee Bean. Yes, it's tasty.
The pastries and fresh breads, and cakes all look soooo good. What's the difference between American cheesecake and Italian cheesecake? I'll find out soon enough thanks to Milano's.
When in NYC, I go to Milano several times a wk to pick up hot, prepared food. So much easier and less expensive than going to a restaurant... and so much easier than cooking for 1 in my tiny postage-stamp kitchen.
Milano has great hot foods, salads of all sorts, fresh breads and made-to-order sandwiches and salads.
This place is a really solid option for just about any meal. I'm in love with the sandwiches (oh my gosh there are a lot of options!) I always get prosciutto with parmesan and butter on ciabatta. Wowza. So good and it's huge! My husband is completely obsessed with the soup, like he eats soup from here every other day. The make-your-own salads are a great deal too. Yes, it seems a bit expensive for salad but I've never actually been able to finish one in a sitting and all the ingredients are super tasty and top quality.
After reading about the cheese bailout in Italy (here it's car companies...there, it's parmesan), I had a craving for a good Italian, cheese sandwich. Milano provided, and it was good.
As a vegetarian, I didn't think my sandwich would be very flavorful, but it surpassed my expectations, tasted fresh and was generously sized. They're great for lunch to go and are also open late. The salad bar has a good variety of toppings too, and they sometimes rotate in different ones on different days (very exciting!). They have some groceries too, if you're looking for an upscale item or fancy cookies to impress at a party. Oh yeah, and beer too.
Their SALAD is spectacular. I mean, BEST-EVER.
Although the service is a little bit not enough.
Two Good Words: Sandwich Amore!
Two Bad Words: spendy spendy
I work across the street from this place, and dream of two things: hour breaks where I can go across the street to get these sandwiches, and these sandwiches. They have a great beer selection as well and are open until eleven for those looking for the gourmet hop choice, and I HIGHLY reccomend the coconut cookies, which are basically coconut shavings dipped in chocolate to make a tiny little fudge dollop. DELICIOUS! One star lost for the price, but do yourself a favor and get the procutto, mozzarella, basil and tomato sandwich and have them put oil and vinegar on it. It's basically heaven on a roll.
The product here is still good, but they discontinued the salad/sandwich card. Very disappointing. I haven't gone back in 3 months. You do the math.

A peppered turkey sandwich (with pesto mayo, cucumbers, tomatoes, fresh cheddar) from Milano Market is the way to my heart....
Freshest ingredients, friendly staff and sandwich makers, great location and perfect place to buy your specialty gourmet items.
Aw the salad man gave me a little cup of my favorite mango pineapple dressing because they don't sell it. That was nice of him!

With respect to their Italian/Milano theme, it's really just for show. A few varieties of crusty bread (and panettone around the holidays) in the window, some hanging prosciutto and a couple small shelves of olive oil, imported tuna, pasta and the like doesn't convincingly transport me to the 'Old Country.' One night when I was hit by the occasional intense craving for prosciutto and provolone stuffed cherry peppers, I was surprised and disappointed not to find them here.
With that said, they do have a nice mix of Italian and conventional groceries (cereal, beer selection). Prepared foods are a step up from average, but as everything within a short walk of Columbia, overpriced. I look forward to trying the unlimited topping $7 salad, which sounds like the big draw. Lastly, don't bother with the sushi (Italian, huh?) here. It's bland, poorly constructed and, again, overpriced. Instead, hit up M2M across the street for better quality at 2/3 the cost.
If actions speak louder than words, I come from a 100% Italian-American family, am a devoted fan of Italian cuisine (since birth), live within 5 minutes of this place. Do I shop here? Rarely, at best.
Overall, a nice market with a bit of an identity crisis.
The salad alone makes this place worthy of attention. Nice, fresh, green, leafy goodness, with unlimited toppings, for $7.something and tax, and they have the little buy-10-get-1-free card too, just like Ham Del nearby.
Has other deli stuff. Nice beer selection, there's sushi, sandwiches... However, none of it is necessarily all that special - better beer selection nearby at West Side Market, the sushi is generic, I hear that the Italian Special sandwich (prosciutto and mozzarella) is supposed to be great, but in general the sandwiches look solid, but not superlative. Everything just about meets expectations.
The salad however, blows them out of the water.
Great selection of foods, breads, prepared etc. Haven't tried their hot foods but from the looks and aroma, it reminds me of my hometown hardcore italian deli.
I bought one of their paisano breads for a lasagna dinner party. Great crust, chewy insides with the perfect fermentation. Well priced and some old school friendly service.
I highly recommend it.
So, a long time ago, this was a beloved local deli called Mama Joy's. Everyone ate here. During the winter, they made the best New England Clam Chowder you ever wrapped your tongue around. Then the owner retired and after a short while, the space re-emerged as Milano Market.
In some ways, a lot of things are the same. It still has crowded aisles stocked high with all kinds of things that you weren't expecting to find in a little Manhattan shop (until you've been in Manhattan for a while and realize that little Manhattan shops always stock some unexpected items). The fabulous deli men have been replaced with other fabulous deli men. Sadly, though, the clam chowder cannot be replaced.
Yes, the prepared food is a little pricey, but I've never noticed anything but the highest quality foods. I love the pre-made sandwiches and the make-your-own-salad station. I don't think I've ever walked out of there with a salad that weighed less than three pounds.
To top it all off, recently, I noticed some fine Belgian beers in stock. I don't know how long they've been carrying them, since I wouldn't have noticed them until my husband started drinking the Belgians. He is very pleased with the selection and had that crazy look in his eye after he went here for the first time.
The old MAMA JOYS. They still make killer roast beef sandwiches. The prepared foods are quite good, excellent for the area, but a bit pricey. A very good selection of salamis, cheeses, etc. Avoid buying
packaged goods here because they are so overpriced.
The sandwiches are a little expensive, as noted. But, hot damn they usually are good. I'm a big fan of the Turkey sandwich and their soups are pretty decent as well. A nice little deli and much better than a craptastic Subway sandwich. Ugh, don't get me started on Subway.
BONUS FUN GAME: See how many bricks you can throw through Subway's windows with little notes attached to it that say, "Dude, why don't you guys have fresh meat instead of that prepackaged shit?"
This is by far, my favorite place to get a salad! There is a huge selection of toppings - of which you may choose as many as you want. There's nothing like having a salad tossed with 15 of your favorite meats, cheeses, and vegetables!
I once trekked nearly a mile in an absolute downpour with a broken umbrella just to satisfy my craving for a big salad... now that's love.
This is a great little italian market to run in and grab stuff, but definitely not to be used as a grocery store. If you want some upscale pasta or home made sauces, come here. They also have great sandwiches and make your own salads (flat cost for 6 ingredients, just the way i like it). They have a slightly larger array of ingredients for salads and sandwiches than every other similar place around, and all ingredients are fresh. I don't think prices are too bad, and they have a salad/sandwich card which you can't beat if you eat those a lot! I've been known to pick up 6 packs here as well, not as many options as westside but you can mix your 6 pack i believe.
The salad bar here is yummy. It's reasonable, filling, and super fresh. Plus they're never stingy and always obliging when I clean them out of their portobello mushroom supply. When I lived down the block, I used to come here almost daily. Also, I love their chocolate chip cookies;)
I agree that it is pricey and limited for everyday shopping needs, but for one off items, it's great.
If you're looking for a quick bite to eat, or most especially, in the mood for a hot bowl of yummy soup, then pop into Milano. Their daily soup selection (six, to be exact, that change daily) is the reason that brings me back. They are light, mouth-watering, and affordable.
The sandwiches are enormous, and can serve as two meals. I made the mistake of eating a whole one for lunch, putting me into a bit of a food coma for the rest of the day. Plus they have a frequent buyer program for sandwiches and salads, and the 10th purchase is free. Soups, most unfortunately, are not included.
If you're looking for decently priced groceries, however, walk down a few blocks to Westside Market.
I miss the salads and sandwiches from Milano's so much. It's probably the first place I'm guaranteed to stop in at whenever I'm back in Morningside Heights. Deli's just aren't like this in Atlanta, and as far as deli's in New York go, I don't know if this is the best there's ever been, but I love their ciabatta bread and the flat rate for the salads. I prefer my salads packed with a whole lot of everything and comparable salads where they charge by weight or per topping are just too expensive.
Hey guys ^.^ to all those who said milano's is the best....ur right LOL...i know i work there....^,^ No really..thankx for the reviews its def appreciated
Milano Market must be one of the few places left in the city that has kept their tossed salads reasonably priced, allowing you to have all the toppings your heart desires. The ingredients are fresh and there are plenty of dressing options which all taste good. If you're not in the mood for a salad, they've got a variety of prepared foods. I prefer the case with fruit salads and tasty pasta/ravioli dishes -- you can also pick up prepacked salads here. It's fun to wander around the tiny aisles & maybe pick up some snacks. A much preferred shopping experience than the D'Agostino down the street. You may pay a couple quarters more, but you'll feel more relaxed and get better food.
Milano is great for fresh custom made salads. They are big and you get as many toppings as you want for one price, so load up. The space is a little cramped, but its worth pushing through the crowd.
Very tasty prepared foods. Their pasta sauces are tasty as well. I used to eat the sushi in between classes and my friends all raved about the sandwiches and, of course, the enormous salads.
SUPER tasty. 1st rate sandwiches, prepared food, salads and boxed sushi. It's not cheap, but worth it for quality food. I would like a better soda/beverage selection, but I'll come here anyway. This is the best deli in the neighborhood.
Note: I am now somewhat confused as to their pricing structure, but I think some things are actually cheaper at lunchtime for the same thing (not surprising?). Pre-made lunch sandwich specials are smaller but cheaper also.
Milano has the best and cheapest salads in Manhattan!!!
The special sauce on the sandwiches are a must. The sandwiches are a little expensive but the quality is great.
my sophmore year at columbia i lived in the building above milano. milano closes at 12:45 am every night. like a good little college student, you could often find me there at about 12:30. my favorites are the homemade chocolate chip cookies, the yogurt & granola parfaits, and of course the toss-your-own salads.
