Stopped their twice over the last month after water skiing at Castaic Lake. Ordered the Philly Cheese Steak on both occasions and loved it both times!
Moderately priced for lunch ($8-$10 range). Not the place to go if you are in a hurry, but the food tasted good and it's worth a trip inside.
Friends had the veggie-melt, chicken sandwich, and chicken tacos. They all enjoyed their meals. Nice selection of milkshakes, too!
Friendly waitresses. I'll definitely stop by again. -

Are you ready for the story behind the review?? So, i decide i'm gonna go to Mike's for lunch. All i want is a ruben sandwich. I mean, i'm craving it and i'm up in Castaic and i don't have a lot of choices if i'm gonna get to my kids' school in time to pick them up. I walk in, the waitress says "sit where ever you'd like". I asked if i could get an order to go. She says "sure. what would you like??" I asked for a ruben sandwich. I repeat, a ruben sandwich. Did i mention, i wanted a ruben sandwich?? She asks me if i want home fries or hashbrowns. I thought, ok, i've never been here. Maybe the place doesn't have fries. I didn't actually look at the menu, so i chose home fries. 10 minutes later, the lady hands me my bag to go and i race to the kids' school. I've got 5 minutes to spare, so i decide i will eat in the car. I open up my container and i have a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich on white toast w/home fries and salsa. WTF!?!? I ordered a ruben sandwich. Like i said, i never read the menu...maybe at Mike's Diner, a ruben isn't really a ruben...it's a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich on white toast??
I ate the bacon, egg and cheese sandwich, after all, it is a sandwich and what's not good about a sandwich??...and it was really good. Not what i ordered, but really good. I liked the home fries, they had onions and peppers in them and the salsa complimented them very well.
Fast forward 4 months and i'm running late, but i gotta eat. Up in Castaic again, i decide i'll read Mike's menu. Nope, a ruben is listed as what a ruben should be. So i ordered it. This time she asked me if i wanted fries...that sounds better. The sandwich was pretty tasty. The corned beef was a little tough, but it had good flavor, the saurkraut was suifficiently tangy, the dressing and swiss cheese round it all out to perfection. Fries are steak fries...not my cup of tea...but they are well cooked, although they could've used some salt. I'll get the home fries again instead.
Service is quick, and the prices/portions are more than reasonable...so i'll definately be back. -

As a native Castisian I'm very familiar with Mike's. Carson was right when he said this place has personality. Mike's really embodies old Castaic and it's history as a trucker's town. It's not pretty but it has a kind of back home charm to it. I don't know anything about it being the best food in Cali, but everything seems pretty solid.
I've been here for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and the menu holds its ground. I particularly like their Mexican food. All and all it's a dependable and reasonably priced meal. -

Truckers' Paradise.
Stopped off here while I was on the road. This little diner is something right out of a movie...from all the truckers eating greasy burgers, to the booths next to the large windows, all the way down to the waitress. Diana, who was a pretty, pretty woman in probably her 50's, looked like she didn't take much crap from anyone and moved at the speed of light. The cash register had a bunch of business cards from LA film advertisements on it. In case you were one of those young girls living on the road, looking for your Big Break. (Glad, that's not me;-)
They specialize in Mexican and American foods. Their menu was loaded. I can usually look at a menu and know right away what I will be ordering. However, Mike's menu is so packed with goodies that it took me a long, long time to decide. They had chips and salsa at 7am. AMAZING! The chips came out WARM and probably were one of the best chips I have ever had in a restaurant. Everything I had was delicious, including steak, corned-beef hash and tacos. They even have beer and wine on their menu & they take credit cards. WoW. -

+1 star for being open 24 hours.
Fried chicken? Straight from the microwave, dried out and tough.
The biscuit? Straight from the microwave, like eating the foam from your sofa cushion.
Chili Size? The chili is 90% beans, 9% water, and 1% mix of old hamburger meat and leftover veggies.
I had high hopes based on the other reviews and the quirky location of this place. Instead it's just a dump with no care given to the food they serve. -

I've never been disappointed with the food here. The atmosphere could be better, and I hate being stuck with the booth seats to the right as you walk in, seeing that the table is definately too short for 4 people to sit and eat at comfortably (booths are longer than the table). So far, I have tried the top sirloin, chicken breast sandwich, and philly steak sandwich. All of which were excellent. The Mexican food there is also a big hit with my parents. The service is good. You can easily get the service without the waitress bothering you every 5 minutes like some restaurants. The one thing you have to be aware of is the additional gratuity sometimes added to a party of 6 or more. Just keep that in mind when you're tipping.
Another problem would be the fact that they advertise 24 hrs, but they aren't. That could simply be a sign left over from years ago, but it needs to be removed.
Why only 4 stars? Simply because of the atmosphere. -

The fried chicken was very good, IMO. NOT straight from the microwave. The BEST fried chicken is Roscoe's or my own kitchen, but 1)I didn't want to cook, and 2) I didn't want to drive to LA. The vegetables were pre-frozen, I am sure....a corn/pea succotash. The mashed potatos were OK, yet tasty with brown gravy.
Hub, who is VERY discriminating. liked the Philly cheesesteak sandy very much. Son liked the burrito plate, and regretted getting a taco on the side, for it was too much food. "Grandpa and StepGra" seemed to enjoy their tuna salad and country fried steak dinners.
Old town diner style. Don't expect luxury here...just good food. Good service, but for some reason, they took a LONG time to dish out my DD's burger...the cook missed it, perhaps? Nonetheless, she ate it and said it was yummy.
If you don't have a bartab, this is cheap eats. :) -

This is hardly a fancy place at all. It is a diner, a trucker's diner. It is just what it is supposed to be. I had a mexican dish that was HUGE. It was excellent too! My dining companion had a burger and was pleased with it too. The waitress was fun, she talked me into the meal I ordered and she was right on!

Mike's is a great diner right off of the 5, before the grapevine. It's open 24/7, I don't think I have ever seen them closed. The food is always great, especially the Mexican and the burgers. The burrito's are huge, and are always more than you need. I love everything. Great for breakfast (choc chip pancakes are bomb), lunch and dinner.

Unfortunately, another one of my top 5 worst dining experiences was here at Mike's Diner. I was staying in town for a project and hunger struck after the closing time of most other restaurants. I love diners and I had read the glowing reviews so I was excited about going to open 24/7 Mike's.
The menu had so many choices I found it difficult to decide, but I chose the pork chops and apples (oops! big mistake!) I knew I was in trouble when my waitress (an Asian lady who appeared to want to be anywhere but there) brought the bread - stale white bread with no flavor. Then the 'salad' arrived... another disappointment. After quite a while --- a long while --- the pork chops arrived. They were old and extremely tough - and honestly had the texture of an old shoe. (wait a minute how would I know what it would feel like to eat an old shoe? was I a dog in a previous life?) Anyway... it was horrible to say the least. I think they must have been in their freezer since the beginning of the new millennium because I don't think many have ordered them. That also explains why it took nearly an hour for them to arrive. I wish I had not tried to take a chance and ordered a simple burger or one of the burritos that others have raved about - but somehow I thought that pork chops and apples would be a safe, diner, "blue plate special" kind of choice. Oops, I was wrong. -

Yes, it is in Castaic and other than work, Hello Cheyenne Studio, I would probably never be up here but Boy am I glad I am. One reason, Mike's Diner. This true diner is across the street from a truck stop and full of big-rig drivers and the "smokeys" that speed trap them. We walked in, sat down, and the highway patrol officer at the next table says "This is the best food in California." Now, I don't know for sure if he was right or not but my patty melt was hands down the best I have ever had. In fact, of our party of 6, every one was raving and as much as I was loving my patty melt with buttery rye I was seriously eyeing my friend's Ruben and root beer float. As stated before, this is a diner, so do not expect any healthy low-carb, low-calorie food but what they do do, they excel at. I can't eat there everyday (I keep telling myself) because I'd end up looking like a trucker, but if you happen to be going north on the 5 Monday-Friday and want some amazing grub, give me a shout-out and I'll meet you at my new favorite place.

The family and I love Mike's in Castaic! We've never had anything bad here, but it might make a difference that we all have our favorites and never stray from those... I always get the machaca and it is fabulous! I have a hard time finding good machaca in this area and was really trying to find someplace that had it, Mike's was the answer. The servings are always HUGE! The kids like the various kids meals they've had and I don't think that my husband has ever been dissatisfied with his meals from there. We go there at least every few weeks... Yes, the appearance is a little scary, but look past that! It's awesome!
