One of the best restaurants on Grand Avenue. The food is fresh and well prepared. The staff are friendly. I had the hamachi, tekka maki, and spicy tuna rolls. All of which are excellent.
It's a little tight navigating through the restuaurant. Other than that it's a comfortable place for a meal. I sat at the bar with my friend on a Saturday night. There's a back room with additional seating. I'm not sure but I think it might be for larger groups or parties.
It can get busy on the weekends but it seems like most people don't have to wait long to be seated.
Like this place needs another review, but I just have to give my two-bits & let you know how great it is!
I came here last Friday night with some friends for dinner. The place was packed so we put in our name and awesomely got seated within 5mins!
Our friendly waiter took our order after we told him we were in a rush because we had a 3hour drive in front of us.
After bringing our drinks & yummy miso soup, our dinner came. I couldn't believe how fast it was! A beautiful huge sushmi platter, 3 special rolls & shrimp tempura. Yummmmy! Everything was fresh & tasty.
We ate, we conquered, paid the bill & left all in 45min on a busy Friday night.
Your absolutely amazing Mijori...I will be seeing you again soon!
Had a craving for some sushi after playing a basketball game in SF...wanted to go to one of my favorites, but alas they closed early! Boo! Luckily the BF thought of Mijori's...it's been a while since either of us had been here. At 9:20pm, they welcomed us and served us hot tea, ice water and miso soup while we perused the menu.
We ordered: Crazy Horse, Spicy Killer and Poki Rolls, Sake Nigri and a Hamachi Hand Roll. The waitress brought us edamame and salad while we waited for our order to come out. The sushi was good and satisfied the craving for fish and rice for the evening. The staff was greatly accommodating to us for coming in so late.
I'm leaning more towards 3.5 stars...it's a great place to go on a Monday night, when craving sushi.
My boy and I weren't suppose to eat here in the first place. We were trying to look for another japanese restaurant but since we were too hungry to drive around, we came across Mijori! I saw a yelp sticker on their window so I thought this place HAD to be good.
I was so right...this place didn't just serve good sushi...they served AWESOME sushi! We ordered 5 kinds of sushi. I can't remember all their names but my favorite was the Titanic Roll and Lion King Roll. The titanic roll had tempera shrimp and crab inside. It was the BEST! The Lion King Roll is probably the best I've tasted as well! The sauce just tasted really different...in a good way of course. Moreover, the rolls are really cheap compared to where we usually eat sushi!
Him and I are already planning our next date there! Can't wait!
My hubby and I was in the neighborhood and had to get something to eat for dinner. We walked around the block but it was getting a bit late, and while we've had positive experience at Neecha Thai in SF and there was another location here in Oakland right on the same block as Mijori, we happened to have had Vietnamese food the night before... and while Thai and Vietnamese is a bit different, we felt that they were in the similar taste palette and my husband preferred to eat something else.
So there was Mijori. From the get go, there is one thing that really confused me about this place...
What the hell is "MIJORI"?!?! Is it a typ-o for Midori??? Because I saw a ton of typ-o in their menu too... but whatever it is, MIJORI, ladies and gentlemen, is NOT a Japanese word. Obviously not English either... it's like operating a Chinese restaurant in America and calling it Fabrizio's. WTF?
Anyway, so that got me skeptical about this place from the beginning. But to their credit, the quality of food seemed A-OK and portion was hefty and good value... service was prompt and one of the waiters were nice enough to give me a box to go for my tempura with tempura sauce inside it without me having to double check and ask for it. Having said that, still a few more of my pet peeves...
Not a single one working there was Japanese. If I picked up their language correctly, they were all Chinese. All the sushi chefs, AND all the Asian guys sitting at the sushi counter chatting with them. Now, I have nothing against Chinese people and I am not trying to be racist... but just why is it that I never find Indians, French, Russian, (fill whatever other /nationality here) operating a sushi restaurant and everywhere I go in California there seems to be more sushi restaurants operated by Chinese and Korean people than ones actually operated by Japanese? And why is it that they are serving a Japanese menu but they don't know how to spell things correctly on the menu or pronounce anything right... do they even bother to learn how to properly write and pronounce the foods they are serving or learn simple Japanese conversation so they can deal with Japanese speaking customers? It always makes me feel so bizarre when I go to a Japanese restaurant and I try to order my food in Japanese and find out that the waitress is not Japanese and she does not understand Japanese.
Anyway, on to the food. Again, foods here were pretty hefty portions. I ordered the Tempura-Sushi Dinner combo and my husband ordered Katsu-don and a spicy tuna roll. My tempura-sushi dinner came with california roll AND 5 pieces of sushi with a pretty thick and big slab of fish on top, miso soup, and a huge portion of tempura. Along with tempura dipping sauce, miso soup and rice. Sushi tasted pretty fresh, and the slices of fish were really generous. Rice was A-OK, slightly firm but I prefer that over soggy squishy rice. Flavor was ok... not super, but okay. Miso soup was also okay... the balance of soup stock and miso was not perfect but it was okay. Tempura came with 2 shrimp, and assorted veggie tempura like beans, sweet potato, broccoli, zucchini, etc. Liked the portion and the batter was crispy but almost a little much on each item... it felt kinda greasy. But overall they gave me so much food and for the price you pay for that dinner combo, I'd say it was worth it.
Husband's katsu-don according to him was okay. Spicy tuna roll was good, but it was actually pretty spicy compared to other ones I've had. His food also came with miso soup.
Overall, our dining experience here was good, but I definitely had better... and if people feel that this is the best sushi in Oakland, I'd actually laugh at Oakland : P Would I return there? Probably, if I was living in that part of town. Would I travel to there from Sausalito just to have their sushi? Definitely not.
While their authenticity is quite questionable, the interior decor seemed pretty consistent with a typical Japanese sushi restaurant, and the people working there, although they definitely were not Japanese, were really nice. For that, plus the general level of quality vs. price, I am giving them 3 stars. But please, someone please tell me what the hell MIJORI is. It is still driving me nuts.
I've been here three or four times and have yet to understand why it's the most popular sushi place in our neighborhood. It's not out-and-out bad, but it is underwhelming given it's rep.
One caveat: I've only been for dinner once, and the other times have been for lunch. When I did go for dinner, it was significantly better.
At my most recent lunch experience, I got a bento with veggie tempura and agedashi tofu. Both fried dishes were heavy and greasy, and the tofu was extremely disappointing, as it was just smothered in a sauce that was way too sweet and gloppy. My boyfriend was smarter and stuck to the chef's choice nigiri sushi lunch special. He found most of it good, but a few offerings were less than fresh. He still feels that we've had consistently better and fresher sushi down the road at Coach, though, and I certainly agree that the non-sushi offerings are better there.
I don't know why this restaurant averages 4 stars. I'm no sushi expert but from what I tasted it was bland, not-so-fresh and disappointing. I didn't want to finish my dragon roll. The ninja roll was better, but not the best. I'd take Coach a few blocks away or Takara in Rockridge over Mijori anyday, even though I live within walking distance to it.
Sorry, but I'm leaning toward 1.5 stars. Maybe we went on a bad night. Not sure the hunny and I will have the stomach to try it again, but you never know.
Oy. Yes, we're sushi snobs.
So given that, we ordered a fairly safe set of standard nigiris: hamachi, sake, amaebi (true, not the right season for it, so I'll take that into account), bonito, saba, and tobiko with quail egg (ok, the quail egg is a newer addition to my lineup of faves, but still pretty basic). And to that I added an ichiban maki (hamachi, unagi, cukes), and a salmon skin hand roll (my idea of dessert). We also started with the miso (nice touch, they serve it up right when you sit down), ika tempura, and a small bottle of house sake.
Sadly, the miso was the best part of the meal. The house sake was a bit acrid, but I suffered through it. (Waste no booze!) The fried foods were heavy rather than light (tempura and ebi heads). The fish pieces were substantial, but the bonito was gritty (aagh!--I almost sent it back, and I never send things back...), the amaebi extra slimy, and the salmon skin hand roll was soggy with teri sauce. (Sob...my dessert...) Again, we struggled through. (Waste no sushi!)
We lucked out, and didn't have a wait (we were there fairly late), and the staff were very friendly and attentive.
Sorry, but I don't think we'll be back anytime soon. Not sure why the Lake doesn't have better sushi options, but we'll stick with the two Korean owned sushi joints for now...
I really hope that maybe we went on an off-night or maybe I'm just annoyed that i waited for 2 hours this morning and the electrician never came as they promised he would, but sheesh, this was some pretty bad sushi.
To be fair, there were a couple of palatable dishes. The miso had a rich, complicated flavor, while the sake nigiri was quite velvety. The wait staff were nice and attentive.
But really, everything else was pretty awful. Don't order anything fried cuz the oil tasted old. Additionally, the ika tempura was heavy and stringy, while the amaebi heads were dense, greasy and even had their tentacles clipped! Dude, that's like the best part!
The bonito tuna tasted funky; the hamachi was overly bland; and the amaebi too slimy and expired-tasting. The salmon skin hand roll that my pardner ordered was actually soaked with teriyaki sauce, which dripped from the bottom when she bit into it. Gross!
Even the house saki tasted bad, like warm watery plastic. The unagi we ordered never came, which turned out great cuz by the end, we were both worried about being sick from the food. Which is probably the worst feeling to have at a sushi restaurant.
Sorry, but I don't think it's because of the electrician after all.
Had a great time here with friends the other night. I was feeling a little daunted by the wait - the place was packed from beginning to end of our visit there, but then again, that's a good sign.
I don't recommend the place for groups larger than 4 because they have very limited seating for large groups (apparently, most of their tables are bolted down) so you'd only have two options. We were a group of 6 and there was a bit of a longer wait than the smaller parties that got seated before us but the waiter took care of us (we went out for a walk down to Lake Merritt).
As soon as we sat down, we were all served miso soup. Orders were taken promptly and food was served in good time. The grub I had tasted great (only cooked food for me right now) but I was jealously eyeing the rolls my friends ordered.
Everything went great and I'm glad we've found a close neighborhood sushi/Japanese restaurant for ourselves.
Local flavor, always packed, friendly and attentive service, and most importantly, fresh fish.
Mijori has a wide variety of rolls that will satisfy any appetite. I generally prefer to stick to nigiri and sashimi, and will tell you that the fish they serve there are well cut, well presented, and very generous. The very generous part can be a bit overwhelming for me - you should be able to eat a nigiri in one bite. I cannot with nigiri at Mijori and it seems that they may have succumbed a bit to the American super size mentality to provide a better value. The only time that would become a problem is where the size of cut meant a reduction in quality of fish - this is not the case at Mijori.
Get there early or late - there is almost always a line during rush.
I've been looking for a decent place to get affordable sushi, and I think I found it. Just went in for a quick bite in the early evening. We sat at the sushi bar and were given bowls of hot miso soup and some edamame soon after we sat down. The sushi chef was friendly, and he recommended the Lion King roll, which was different and tasty. The nigiri platter had a nice assortment of fresh-tasting fish. My only complaint: the sushi rice in my uni nigiri was warm, and I was expecting the whole bite to be cold...but that's not really a huge problem.
As we were leaving the place started filling up, and everyone who sat down at the sushi bar seemed to know the chef, which gave it a warm and friendly atmosphere. I'd definitely go again.
Very friendly staff, decent sushi. Not much to say beyond that - I'll be back to get my fill of sashimi.
I was introduced to Mijori several years ago while here on a first date (!!!) Let me say that sushi is not a very good first-date food, at least for me. I would normally stuff the whole piece of sushi in my mouth and slowly chew it but it's quite an impediment to conversation, so instead I ate my sushi part by part - first the filling, then the seaweed covered rice. I was so nervous I could not finish my two rolls, but nothing was wrong with the sushi - trust me - because I've returned to Mijori numerous times.
Their fried oysters are decent and I have no complaints about the freshness of the fish, although their udon is not that good. I usually order the poki roll plus another roll.
Prices are reasonable and service is good. There is always without fail a line around dinner time, even on weekdays, so bring a pashmina or a jacket and be prepared to wait!
Just went there on a Friday and had to listen to dullard behind us getting nowhere on his first date. But unlike Mr. Tedious, food in front of us was entertaining and lively.
It's a good sign that there is a wait here, about half-hour for 2 on a Friday night. Tuna sushi nice and fresh, as were oysters. Had a baked rainbow roll that was big and delicious (That's What She Said!)
Staff appreciates your business. Pretty quick service. Prices were good too. We had a mountain of fish and a big beer and got out for about $60.00 pre-tip. Solid but not great, can't go wrong, etc.
So monday might not be the best day to get sushi..but bad sushi any day of the week is unacceptable when you live a stones throw away from the damn ocean!
The himachi was fishy and mottled in color and the rolls were sloppily made. For something as simple as sushi, freshness of ingredients and skill and neatness in preparation are key and Mijori did an epic fail on both of those.
If I NEED sushi within a 1/2 mile from my house, I guess I'll go back to Coach but I didn't think that place was all that great either! Damnit! Where is the good east bay sushi spot! I'm not that picky or anything but it should be fresh and look pretty. Like moi.
In the mood for Japanese food, my sis and I tried this place out on a weeknight. Will not return.
My god the food was horrible!!!!! Three of the dishes we ordered were DRENCHED in icky sweet teriyaki sauce, including two of the special rolls. So much so that we couldn't taste any of the ingredients in the rolls. The agedashi tofu sat drowning in a 3/4" deep pool of another gloppy sweet sauce. We couldn't finish any of those dishes.
I wasn't particularly impressed with the nigiri sushi, either (hamachi and maguro). Big slabs of fish, a bit tangy and not in any way sweet, tiny balls of rice.
Ok so let me start with the low rating of stars. See you have to understand that I hold sushi to a standard that many cannot touch. I also like to give a place a few tries before upping their rating. So 3 stars on the first go round... not too bad. Seriously this place is good, I just have a things about consistency.
Now on to the review...
So there was a wait. I can understand that. It was 830 on a Saturday. I'm happy to wait b/c my ass was tired. But at the same time, this place was pretty small. i was quite surprised at the lack of size, well for a sushi place at least. Thankfully the turnover was pretty quick and it felt like we were in the middle of their dinner rush.
We ordered a rainbow roll, sake, maguro, hamachi and the famed sea scallop roll. The Rainbow roll was great. Really fresh fish not too gross crab stuff on the inside and all around gem. The Hamachi was EXCELLENT it was so good that we got two helpings. The Maguro, meh I was surprised that it wasn't a good as the Hamachi. The Sake was alright too, not too impressed. Now don't get me wrong, I'm sure that its simply the fish, you win some and u lose some right?
Ok so this Sea Scallop roll that everyone talks about is a bit over rated. I'm not a fan of sushi that doesn't taste like fish. I will admit that it is definitely a great choice if u aren't really a sushi eater, bc it is tasty. It just doesn't taste like fish to me. It had cheese on it and I think that turned me off. With the cheese scraped off it was delicious, kinda.
Finally I welcome you to try the Uni. It was suggested by the waiter. he sold it really well by saying, "well its not THAT nasty.' It should be a right of passage. Eat the Uni. Leave me a comment when you do!
Haven't come here in a while. Haven't eaten sushi for a while actually. Decided to walk over after mani and pedi at Nail Shop.
Yeah there is sometimes a wait but its really not that bad with all the cute shops around. One you sit down the service is always superb, sushi pretty good, waiters always speedy and really nice.
I'm not sure why this happens with me lately, but sushi goes along with getting buzzed. I've gotten drunk at almost every sushi joint I've been to! Its a really nice feeling. Nothing like taking hot sake shots with the waiters, sitting there talking as long as you want, picking on sushi and leaving feeling prettttyyyy good.
I found this place on Yelp and decided to check it out the other night. The location is pretty conveniently located right on Grand and there's a public parking lot in the back that you can park in. No joke, even on weekdays there can be a wait for this place and the bf and I had to put our name on the list. It's usually a pretty good sign when there's a line to get in. We probably only waited about 15 minutes before we were called. We ended up sitting at the bar which was fine - lots of space and we got to order directly to the sushi chef - yay! Sitting at the bar is a plus because you can look and see how fresh the fish is!
The hot tea here is really yummy and they give you complimentary edamame - can't go wrong with that! We had the ebi tempura for an appetizer and shared 4 rolls - the 49er, poki roll, the ninja roll, and a rainbow roll. All the rolls were pretty yummy! I love the slice of lemon on the 49er roll - who woulda thunk? The ninja roll was also good - shrimp tempura, crab, and avocado - YUM YUM. I wouldn't say that the rolls were the biggest I've seen but I was still really full by the time we were done. Plus all that food came out to be about $35.
The only negative was that it was sometimes hard to get the attention of the servers because they were so busy running around.
I'll be back though.
I enjoyed this place. There was a wait on a Thursday night, but the time was easily filled with a quick stroll through Walden Books. We ordered four rolls (Ninja, Crazy Horse, asparagus, and veggie), and my bf got a soda...under $25. The best was the Ninja roll...love that crunchy fried prawn! Veggie rolls were pretty forgettable. On the whole, a solid place for decent sushi. Next time I want to try the Double Eagle!
The service is friendly. If you go after 6 or on the weekend expect a bit of a wait. Luckily this last time there was only two of us so we got seated right away since we were okay with sitting at the counter.
They brought us miso and edamame with our right away. However, the miso was way too salty and the edamame had zero salt. They were also pretty limp and pathetic, to be honest.
Sushi I've tried here:
Titanic - not bad.
Unaten - solid.
Spider Roll - underwhelming and not very well put together because it fell apart immediately.
So at that point, I would have given 3 stars.
But then this last time:
Island Roll - super duper extra freaking AMAZING. Dear god, that was delicious. The salmon was so fresh and the tempura crunch gave it such a wonderful texture. I am so in love with that roll!!!!! I am almost in tears from happiness recalling the delicious taste. Mmmm.
It made me auto-bump this review to 4-stars. I really think it just comes down to knowing which rolls to order. Go with the Island Rolls, you will be happy you did. I want to go back and try some different ones now.
With the german departing tomorrow, the team decided to do a little goodbye lunch treat. The agreed upon location was Mijori in Oakland, right off of Grand avenue. It was only about a 5-10 minute drive from Alameda.
Parking is easy, not crowded at all. However, there is a one hour time limit and they are rough, my co-worker got a ticket by like 5 minutes.
Decor is neat, as expected like any hole in the wall sushi place. Food is really good. Service is quick. However, she did bring out one person's lunch well before the sushi rolls for everyone else. Should not have happened.
Rolls are really good, the double eagle and titanic were our favorite, and a specialty to this place.
It's good sushi, not on par with Sushi Bistro being the benchmark. However, 10 rolls, miso soup, edamame, one entree, tax and tip ran us right under $100 for 6 people. Value for money, this place cannot be beaten. Highly recommend it.
There is a good reason you will have to wait in line for a half hour to get sushi here... it's totally worth the wait. Their rolls are awesome, and fairly decently priced.
they also do some special veggie rolls for my fiance which are not on the menu... the chefs are really open to making what you want.
We'll continue going here for sure!
do the BAY SCALLOP SUSHI ROLLS!!
I enjoyed their sushi rolls... and enjoyed it a lot more when the bill came.
Decent price.
Mijori is a sushi lover's heaven. Delicious rolls for incredible prices! The menu is pretty typical for a Japanese restaurant, but they do have their share of unique "special rolls." What really drives me coming back to this place is that I can leave with stomach satisfied and my wallet still full.
The best deal for sushi in the entire Lake Merritt area!
The only drawback - I'm not the only one who savors Mijori's sweet deals. There is always a wait (the place is tiny) and the waiting area is cramped. However, if you are willing to wait to pay less than ten dollars for a good meal, you'll stay.
I've been here several times and think it's pretty good. I can't give it more stars though because how good it is really depends on who prepares your order...some chefs are better than others and they just aren't consistent!
I love Hamachi, Toro, Albacore and Sake Nigiri and they always taste fresh but the size of my order again, always varies.
I also enjoy a roll or two but lately it seems like their hit or miss....I hate when they have been thrown together and are falling apart when you try and eat them or the BBQ'd Eel hasn't really been BBQ'd and is chewy. It also seems lately that they all kinda taste the same.....hmmm.
I do think the staff are friendly and I will continue to eat here-just not my First choice of sushi places.
OK I know the drill, If you're a regular at a sushi restaurant the experience is totally different than if you're just some Schmo off the street. I was working in the neighborhood and stopped in for lunch. The fish was fresh with decent portions. As always I ordered the Unagi, it's my baseline for comparing different places because it lets me know about their fish and sauce making skills. It was a little bony but the sauce was good. Another indicator is the miso soup, they got that one just right.
Drawbacks:
The Crazy Horse roll I ordered was a train wreck, it was tasty but it was falling apart on the plate. By the time I was done with it my plate looked as if I was using chopsticks while wearing hockey gloves. The service was definitely not up to par but what would you expect, I came in there looking like a Redneck Carpenter with a pencil behind his ear (cuz' well that's who I am).
When it was all said and done I had a decent lunch for $20 including tip. It wouldn't be a destination for me but if I'm in the neighborhood again I'll be back.
When I got back to my truck I found a $45 parking ticket.
FUCK OAKLAND!!!
YOU THIEVING BASTARDS!!!
fuckyoufuckyoufuckyou.
I would give this place 3 stars, but little pieces of hard plastic were inside the rolls we ordered.
Prices are definitely fair, the place was packed, service was good and the staff was polite, but I think I'll stick to Kamakura and Yellowtail in Alameda...Better quality sushi, better ambiance, and no surprises inside the food.
Double Eagle....that's it! I weigh 165 lbs and I could eat 5 of those by myself. Would be one of the last things that i ever tasted on earth if possible.
Picture this: Oakland. 2009. Its a typical semi-overcast day in the Bay, the gray clouds giving way to intermittent sunshine and occasional gusts making it just cold enough to need a jacket. Two friends are pounding the pavement, chatting and looking for lunch. Enter Mijori.
My friend tells me that there are two Mijoris in the area and that this is the better one. The vibe is neighborhood sushi joint with a basic interior of sushi bar and tables, but I do like the Shinto-esque entryway. As soon as we sat down the server dropped green tea and miso on the table, a nice way to warm up after the chill outside.
We skipped the apps and entrees and went straight for the sushi; their sushi is non-traditional, lots of avocado, eel sauce, and spicy mayo but they've got a few things going for them. Their rolls are creative and they have a wide variety so even a sushi neophyte can find something they'll like. A guy at the sushi bar ordered a CA roll and I overheard the sushi chef offer him either real crab or krab (surimi) - a nice touch considering most don't offer you the option.
We shared a couple of rolls, the 49er, Raider, Ninja and Y2K and all were damn good. My friend wasn't a huge fan of the Raider as it had raw scallop on top; I liked it though, you could tell the scallop was fresh and just a bit briny. The fish is good and fresh but not excellent, the texture of the sushi rice is decent, and their flavor combos are tasty. We both agreed that the Y2K and the NInja were the best of the bunch but we demolished everything so that's saying something.
Service was quick and efficient and in this economy I definitely appreciated that our 4 rolls came out to less than forty bills. If we had been in SD it definitely would have cost a pretty penny more. Like I said, this is more of a neighborhood joint but with prices and sushi this good I wouldn't be opposed to coming here again next time I'm in the Bay Area.
Best of Life.
Happy Every Time.
Feel great for 24 hours after eating here.
Love the Sushi Chefs
Everything is FRESH
Perfect Edamame
Perfect Miso
Perfect
Love it to death. This would be my last meal.

This is my favorite sushi in the bay area! The titanic and the 49er are my favorite and I get them… Read more »
Not bad, but not particularly exciting either. Know a lot of people like this place, but I just don't get it.
I feel lucky these days, not much to complain about and Mijori is definitely nothing to complain about.
I am also lucky I can eat sushi! Yay diet, for once. LOL. A close girlfriend of mine lives in Oakland (better weather), and it's always nice to travel across the Bay to see her as a wife. So we chose Mijori and ordered 2 rolls and 2 nigiris and we wolfed the food down thinking we would need to order more. But we were strangely stuffed and in a good way.
The 49er roll (salmon, lemon and avocado) and poki roll (spicy tuna with seaweed salad on top) were down right buttery-melty, and the halibut and red snapper nigiris were fresh and moist but not watery.
Service was friendly and prompt. The reason this place got 4 stars was because it's just not mind-blowing. 5 stars is I would travel to Oakland everyday for a month.
Ohh Mijori, you saucy minx. I moved from Oaktown to SF in '06 and have yet to find a better sushi haven than M-to-I-to-JORI in the city or elsewhere.
It is fresh. It is fast...well, once you sit down. You may wait for a table--its worth it. The chefs are friendly and if they know you by face may just bust out a special shot of sake for you. Once they cut me a live octopus tentacle and passed it to me with the warning, "Make sure you chew it good or it'll climb back up your throat!"
I can't say enough. The 49er roll doesn't even need soy sauce. The poki roll is a crowd pleaser and the sashimi can't be beat.
I. WANT. IT. NOW.
It seems that there's no good sushi restaurant on Grand ave. in Oakland. I only went here after dining @ the sushi boat on Grand that our friend told us this was better, it was better but not that much better.
We order the Veg Tempura which came pretty fast and was quite decent, they also gave us miso soup as we sat down.
I order the 12 piece nigiri deluxe dinner while my bf order a deep fry spicy tuna & ninja roll (shrimp tempura w/ avocado & tobico).
First of all the nigiri was so poorly made that it looked like a rice turd w/ fish on it and any restaurant that serves Tilapia as sashimi is no no on my book. Tilapia is borderline bottom feeding fish, it's meat is not meant to be eaten raw. While the portion of the fish is big, i question on the freshness of the fish it wasn't firm but rather soft & mushy.
The deep fry spicy rolls tasted like canned tuna, enough said. The ninja roll while it was ok but nothing out of the ordinary.
Would never go again, on the plus side the staff is ever so friendly and rapid service so that's why I gave them 2 star.
Great sushi, nice staff, reasonable prices.
The Y2K rolls is DELICIOUS!
Agadashi tofu - so yummy!
All I have to say is...
DOUBLE EAGLE ~ ISLAND ROLL
I realize a lot of people think this place is the shiznit. All it ended up doing for me was giving me the runs.
The first time I went I got the vegetarian bento box which was at times oily, unseasoned, underwhelming.
The second time I went I got the Chirashi A. When they brought it out it had a huge gap in it where the wasabi and ginger were supposed to go. I took my girlfriends because she's not into that stuff.
The first piece of fish I grabbed was red snapper ("GOOD FISH WEAVER," UHF anyone?) and it had a crunchiness to it. Crunchy fish either means bones or scales. In an case that means poorly prepared fish. It was a scale. I was like okay, hopefully the next couple of pieces of fish do not have scales...they did! Awesome.
I then dig into the sushi rice underneath. It is warm, like perspiring warm. It needed a speed stick, that's how much perspiration was coming off this warm rice. What's the big deal with warm rice you ask?
Well when eating foods that are uncooked and also warm nothing. When eating cold, raw foods it not only ruins the flavor of the fish that is supposed to be chilled it invites bacteria. Bottom line: warm sushi rice is super unprofessional and also gives you a case of the runs in the middle of the night.
I mean I think this place is another case of a sushi joint that people think is good when it's actually not. I would go again, it's not bad, but I just hate getting the runs.
Also can I say something else...well I can cuz it's my yelp review...I hate plastic plates, cups, tea pots. What is it with plastic food wares in restaurants man? Let's unite against plastic dishes and the like in restaurants that don't hand you a bib when you walk in.
If you know of any restaurants that hand you bibs when you walk in, let me know.
This is my favorite place to get non-traditional sushi. Though I don't live in Oakland anymore, I drive there whenever I have a need to have sushi...that's right, a need!! The fish is always fresh and the food quality consistent.
My favorite rolls are the double eagle (I could eat these non-stop), poki roll, lion king, and the good ole' spider roll. The Chirashi is also very good. It comes with a nice variety of fish. I have also had various hot meals, but the one that sticks out most is the Katsudon.
Downfall, they're so good, there's constantly a waiting list. Get there early, sit at the bar, or come back, but whatever you do, go to Mijori!!!
DO IT, DO IT!!!
