Neighborhoods: Rittenhouse Square, Penn Centeri think its odd that everyone keeps refering to this place as a diner, granted it is but i like to think of it as a dive bar. heck, when i stumbled on it the other day i wasnt sure if i had found the back entrance or what! it was poorly lit, had a smell of experience, msnbc on the t.v. and a pretty fair manhattan.
i was there at about 2 in the afternoon and it was quiet enough to draw and enjoy my own space. the bartendress was great and went to pains to make sure i was alright. i couldnt say about alot of the food but one thing i do, to test a new spot, is to order the cheeseburger, usually if they cant get that right, theres no need to order food there.
mine came out promptly, cooked perfectly with two slices of american cheese making a geometrically perfect star of david, i'm not jewish but i kind of wanted to be right then. all in all, a manhattan, lovely cheeseburger, bag of chips and a pickle for less than 10 bucks aint so bad in my book.
i heard they lost one of their michelin stars this year, maybe thats why everyone else is griping on the food, frankie says relax, its a dive bar. you should be thankful.
p.s. the address given on yelp says chestnut street, dont be fooled, its a little alley off of chestnut that didnt have a name when i looked.

Nothing was open Thanksgiving morning to eat breakfast except this spot... dinky diner... NJ sounding waitresses...
Coffee was alright..ask for Splenda and you shall receive...service slow and pitiful..
Pancakes were fluffy...
Cost--alright...
Would've preferred something else...but if you want the 'ALICE' experience.. not a bad place to go!

I love this diner. It's by far my favorite in the city, primarially because it's a bit off of the corner, and it attracts less customers. So it's usually quiet at night time. The service and food quality is as to be expected of a diner. But there is something comforting and warm about the staff there which leads me to staying for hours talking with friends over coffee and pancakes.

Whenever I go to the Midtown IV I usually get creamed chipped beef by default. Its all I know how to do here. Not because its the best creamed chipped beef ever, but because it comes out so fast. Its like an S.O.S. factory there. It comes out in about 5 min or less. To this day I still don't understand what the deal is. My friend says they make a big batch, and they pull a lever and in pours onto the plate. Whatever the deal is I know I can get it in a hurry, and thats what keeps bringing me back. Also the staff is pretty cool and down to earth.

Honestly, I've been here three-four times, not really a fan. It's dark, it's dirty, and the food is really sub-par, even for a 24 hour diner (if they still are a 24 hour spot?)
I think it's cool to have a kitschy diner in this section of the city, but it'd be so much better if that actually made me want to go inside once in a while. There's far too many alternatives than to settle here.
"Every time I have gone partying in Philly with friends, no matter how large, rowdy, or annoying we may be at 1am, the folks here always take care of us. They set up tables so we can sit together, the pitchers of beer are well priced (hell yeah Yuengling!), the food is typical diner food, and its cheap and easy.
We always make a stop whenever we can being that it is just down the street from my friends apartment... a trip to Philly wouldn't be complete without a pit-stop here in the middle of the night for refueling."
oh man oh man, pancakes whenever. this a throwback diner right in the middle of center city. forget those fancy restaurants and get your pancakes.
