Full disclosure: I've never visited the actual store -- only bought comics online. That being said, I was QUITE impressed with the experience. As a collector, I was nervous about what the product condition would be like when it arrived especially since it was traveling across the country.
Thankfully, my fears were unfounded. I'm actually *very* impressed with Midtown Comics' packaging. Non-acidic covers, comics are inverse facing, back-boarded, bubble wrapped AND in a box.
Plus, the shipping was quite affordable (2-3 bucks). Well done MTC, well done. -

The big boys in town. This listing is only for the first Midtown Comics location in Times Square. There are now three locations in total.
Midtown is squeaky corporate clean, easy to navigate, and full of friendly staff members, but the decor is a bit over-the-top: it's essentially full of advertising for... Midtown Comics. Their edge is their smart selection.
I work for one of the competitors (Manhattan Comics & More) but every comics shop in NYC has its own style and I try to frequent as many of them as I can. I like that the comics-reading people of New York have a variety of stores to choose from and I don't want that to end any time soon. -

Great collection of comics and everything related to your favorite superhero. I'm not even that into comics, and I tagged along with my best friend who's obsessed. I was pretty amazed; there's two floors of goodness!
There's also a pretty extensive collection of anime graphic novels, and the people there are super helpful. -

My favorite place to go! Staff is great, items are always in stock, they have plenty of signings by artist and stars and most importantly...COMICS!

I love randomly coming here to look at the collectibles and graphic novels, or just browse through the comics.
There are 2 floors,
upstairs is mostly collectible figures and other 'toys', there are t-shirts, hats, posters and more.
Downstairs is a whole floor of comics, graphic novels, and even a kids section of good reads.
Staff is 9 out of 10 times helpful, attentive and nice, usually smiling and eager to help if you have any questions.
This place is great, it's never too crowded in my experiences.
If you have time, and you like comics, graphic novels, and all the related, then make a visit. -

Love this place. It's clean, has every comic book you'd ever need, and best of all, NO pushy salespeople. The people who work here are awesome. Last time I was here, I asked my boyfriend, " hey, I wonder if they have Red Son." Like a minute later, one of the guys who works there comes around the corner and puts the book in my hands. Score. I go here every time I come to NYC and am never disappointed.

Hawthorne, NY
Midtown Comics is a really nice comic shop.
They have a large range of current and recent issues, encompassing an entire wall on the downstairs floor of their space. The rest of the downstairs floor contains bookcases with graphic novels and some novels and reference and art books.
The upstairs has bins with back issues (bagged and boarded), collectible figures and toys and some t-shirts. The amount of back issues is relatively limited, but given the sheer volume of new additions monthly, they'd just run out of space in no time at all. I believe other back issues are available from their warehouse through their website.
I like Midtown Comics a lot. It's well laid out, organized and clean. It makes a nice change to some shops I've visited over the years that are dusty, dirty and stacked with teetering boxes. The staff is helpful and friendly.
If you like comics, and are in NYC, it's really a must. -

Carlsbad, CA
A well run, amply stocked with friendly and helpful staff comic store! The store layout was outstanding. Store navigation was easy. New material was on one side of the store with graphic novels, comic themed books on the other. All (e.g., The Art of Joe Quesada) material was clearly organized and highlighted with signs providing necessary information on what you were looking at. It was evident that staff ensured everything was in it's assigned place.
Upstairs included the majority of back issues carried by the store (Downstairs had a few bins). Very helpful staff helped me find the books I was looking for. Upstairs also included a very nice and comprehensive selection of hero statues/figurines. A small portion of floor space was dedicated to super hero themed T-Shirts.
I didnt see any golden or silver age comics - but that doesn't mean they wern't there or couldn't be obtained through Midtown's services.
Overall, an enjoyable place to spend some time! -

Wow, what a disappointment.
When I saw the Midtown Comics banner from outside, I was so excited. I have found the place that I've heard so much about. I walk in and exhale as I realize that it's a lot smaller than I ever thought.
The main floor has a beautiful wall full of new issues. When I say full, I mean from floor to ceiling. Also, here you can find shelves full of graphic novels and hard cover books.
Once you move to the second floor, you find a few bins with back issues, a small section of graphic t's and toys.
Going through the bins, I realize how limited they are with their back-issues. Usually that's the main thing that I look for, we all have to fill our gaps somehow.
It was clean, organized a little too well (back issues of x-men are organized by events and not necessarily by issue number) and the staff is friendly and willing to help.
Maybe I'm a bit of a snob, but, I expect a good Comic Book shop to have that musty/slightly moldy smell that old comic book pages have, maybe a little stain here and there in an old carpet that has been placed there by some snot nosed kid who spilled his pop while reading a new issue of Amazing Spider-Man with his sticky hands.
Alas, there is none of that here. The carpets are clean, the comics are neat. and it's full price.
But, I'll probably be back anyway.

A huge store that satisfies anyone's comics book cravings.
They have a great collection of new and recent comics, a variety of titles, an amazing selection of action figures and a decent collection of older comics books. This spot is a good blend of old-fashioned comics store with the newer, modern kinds that are more popular today.
I will definitely have this on my list of places to visit anytime I'm in NYC. -

I always liked the Hulk. Identified with him in fact. The misunderstood giant. In love with a woman that he'd do anything for, protect her to his last. I recall an issue when the Hulk thought the fantastic four was trying to hurt is shawtie...Maaaan! Big dude hit Ben Grim aka "The Thing' so hard, he knocked some of those orange bricks off his ass. LOL
Have the same feeling about Conan. The real one-Frank Frazetta's Conan. Look at the illustrations in my album. Fighting a mountain of foes. That battle was about a woman for sure.
Who else but a woman could evoke that type of rage.
There are other favorites, misunderstood heros. and they are all here at midtown. I'm an avid reader. Novels are my main course, but comic books, well comic books are my desert. That makes Mid Com one of my favorite restaurants...er book stores.
The store is strong and muscular like some of the hero's featured on the pages of it's Mag's. The staff knows it's stuff, is very helpful and loves what they do. You can take your time and stroll and browse in piece, but not to worry, a mag aficionado is always near by ready to help if need be. I like this store. and every now and then they toss in a free comic book day.
That's my kinda store.

Best Comic Book Shop Bar none. They make sure to order lots of copies of key books so you don't go there all pissed off because they are sold out of everything. There service is the best bar none. Unlike awful places like Cosmic Comics that don't care what you want to buy Midtown goes out of their way to find issues you are looking for. I once went to the register with a fat stack of books and the cashier asked if I got everything I wanted. I told them about one issue I was looking for and he walkie talked 2 different people on the first and second floor to fid the issue. They not only found it but they ran to the register to give it to me. Now that's what I call service.

A slice out of the good old days. Holding a comic in your hand and turning the pages one by one.
THIS is how you buy a comic. If you have a child, please take them here because places like these don't stand a chance when Amazon is handing out the same comics straight to your door for $5 cheaper. But please show the children what a real comic book store is like!
I love that this place exists, and I'll continue to support them till the day I die. Why? Because in this crazy world of ours, superheros are the only real role models left!
*Sorry I got a little serious there. We went in because my fiance loves this kind of stuff, so I naturally needed his input on this review and he went a bit overboard.

This is the place to go for comic books in New York City. This Times Square location in my opinion is much better than the Grand Central Station location because it is a bigger space.
The best feature about Midtown Comics is the deal they give after you have purchased $100 in comic books or graphic novels, they'll give you $20 free in comics or graphic novels. It's a great deal for people who love comics and go every Wednesday to pick up new issues!
Midtown Comics always has the most recent editions of any comic in print. It also has large numbers of graphic novels and back issues. If you can't find a back issue somewhere else it's very possible that it'll be at Midtown Comics. Even if this location doesn't have it, just ask a person who works there who know everything about comic books and they can call and check with the Grand Central Station store. If the other store has it, they'll send it over in a day or so without charge.
Midtown Comics is my favorite comic book store hands down. -
Review from Ethan F.
I was walking around midtown a few weeks ago during the NYC holiday craziness, pretending to be the fly-est holiday window voyeur [Brooklyn-bound] tourist of all time, and a HUGE Spiderman display pops into my purview. I've had dreams (and a few nightmares, too) about this happening to me at some point during my stint living in the city, as I'm a HUGE Spiderman fan. Part-disgusted with myself that I had never heard of this kingdom, and part-super excited to experience what was in store for me, I scurried on in.
Midtown Comics is GIGANTIC. Comic glory spans two huge floors, with the first floor holding all of the comics, books, and graphic novels that one could ever ask for, and the second floor displaying action figures, T-shirts, clothing, and other such memorabilia from all of your friendly neighborhood comic book superheros. The first floor looks like a bookstore, and the second floor looks like my bedroom. YES, please.
The customer service at MC is off-the charts-good. I was there for about an hour, and I'm fairly certain that every employee that was working that shift asked me if I needed any help finding anything, or if I had any questions. They were super friendly, and not in the socially awkward kind of way. Best of all, MC has a life-sized Spiderman piece of beauty (not for sale) on the second floor by the window, and when I whipped out my camera and took a million pictures of it...no one gave me a hard time at all. Awesome.
I plan on going back to MC in the very, very near future. I'd like to experience the shop post-holiday craziness. It'll be a few weeks, though, as going there without a freshly deposited paycheck is not an option! Go to Midtown Comics...you will not be sorry. -

Is this place geek heaven or what? They have an enormous collection of new and used comics, as well as shelves of graphic novels, action figures, and videos to keep a geek like myself spending hours and hours and hours just browsing around and not buying anything at all.
The last time I went there was actually just a few days ago when the geek goddess herself Olivia Munn stopped by to have a signing for her new book. Midtown Comics and its staff were so very accommodating to all the fanboys and fangirls that showed up to have their book signed and get a picture taken with Miss Munn. The line started forming out the street at around 4pm and Olivia Munn was not even scheduled to show up until 8pm. They did not rush the fans and were extremely courteous. They didn't rush Olivia even when she insisted on spending a couple minutes chatting with each and every fan who waited in line for hours just to meet her. They ended up staying opened hours later than their closing usual time just so the entire line of people got to meet Olivia Munn.
Just an amazing and awesome store all around. -

These guys are great. The staff there has instant mental book location powers that far surpass anything I've ever seen. It sort of makes it tempting to never look for anything yourself.
Since they are a huge name in a popular spot, don't expect any crazy deals. But know that if you are 1) looking for something and 2) that object exists - one of the guys from midtown comics will track it down for you. -

I have to compliment their wide selection of all back issues. Setup is very organized. I was also surprised to see that they also had alot of obscure stuff like japanese manga.

It's pretty hard to knock this place. I wanted to think of SOMETHING, since it's kind of the big bad competition-stomper, but they kind of just do everything right here.
It's huge, clean, brightly lit, and they have a sprawling stock of back issues and new stuff. The staff is friendly, but they don't go out of their way to help in my experience; this, at least, is preferred to rude employees, or workers that are a little too in-your-face. And though they have older comics in droves, there seem to be some glaring holes in their back issue collection. The store gets absolutely packed on occasion, but it's never as bad as Forbidden Planet.
I have yet to visit the Grand Central location, but New York comic shops don't really get better than this. Other shops do have more personality, though, so I recommend this place with the caveat that you go visit some of the smaller guys, too!Listed in: Manhattan Comics!

Somewhat cool set-up, as they have new comic releases, bootleg DVD's and a large selection of bound books on their first floor-- everything from "Marvel Essentials" and trade paperbacks to junk like manga and Twilight. They have a few Silver Age and older books tacked up on the walls, but nothing too amazing (well, to ME at least. Consider that I have 30+ years of collecting under my belt). Of course, there's a bargain bin...so if you need your fix of "Archer & Armstrong" or "Brigade", hit that up.
The DVD selections intrigue me. They have official store-bought releases, but also have a good selection of strange stuff that you typically only find at conventions... like the 1970's Doctor Strange TV movie, or the 1960's Marvel Super Heroes shows. I didn't look too extensively, but I wouldn't be surprised if they've offered the Star Wars Holiday Special in the past! Sure, these DVD's may be of a lower quality, but until those shows get official releases, this is a good place to find 'em.
Upstairs has the majority of their back issues, which disappointed me somewhat. The bulk of their Marvel and DC titles did not extend before 1991 or so. Also, they filed "Amazing Spider-Man" under "S" and not "A". Grrrr...amateurs! From their national advertising campaigns, I gather that they do the majority of their back issues via an online marketplace. When I want some old stuff, 99% of the time I look online. So I can't really fault them for having an underwhelming inventory in their brick n' mortar store.
But they seem to understand how to present their stuff. The first floor (where most of their customers seem to shop) is set up more like a bookstore than the typical comic shop. Sure, they have posters and life size superhero mannequins, but it's a step up from the "nerd ghetto" look n' feel of most comic shops.Comment from Gerry G. of Midtown Comics 11/9/2010

I just have to say that the staff here are great!
I brought my son here and they were super helpful and answered all his questions. They even offered my friend and I chairs so we can sit while my son ran around the place looking for comic books.

Short Version: Nerds of the world...unite!
Long Version: It's not often that I blow my wad upon entering a store, unless it's the Hustler store. But good gravy, this place is Mecca for nerds like me. And yes, I do kneel and pray in the direction of this store now. Any sort of comic book related need you may have can be found at this store or on their website. The prices are competitive, the store is well kept and the staff is friendly. What more can you ask? If comic books are your thing, you owe it to yourself to visit. Check'em out! -

Gigantic comic shop! First floor is comics, graphic novels, and back issues. Upstairs is mostly toys. The knowledgeable staff that will help you find whatever you are looking for.

Lyndhurst, NJ
As an avid comic book collector I try and hit as many comic shops as I can because no two are created equal. Some will focus more on graphic novels, some feature more indie comics, others focus on back issues, but every one has it's own appeal and draw.
If you're looking for a good all around shop though, Midtown is your best bet in the city. Whether you're a hard core collector or a newbie to the scene you'll find a wide variety of current and new titles, a wide variety of graphic novels and compilations and a great back issue selection. The setup is relatively easy to maneuver but the new release wall is a little tough to get used to unless you know what you're doing.
The feature that really stands out at Midtown is their membership plan which features a $20 discount every time you spend $100, so for someone making weekly trips to the store this makes a major difference.
A quick warning: Unless you need to get your new releases the day they come out try to avoid stopping in on Wednesdays. The store is packed so tightly that the line raps through the entire graphic novel section and getting to the new releases is harder than getting up to the bar to get a beer during a Sox/Yankees game. -

*Great selection
*Friendly staff
*Awesome website/services
I love this place. It has a large collection of current and back issues, with many different choices. I haven't really engaged the staff to do anything complicated or look for anything, but they are friendly. I have seen them others with great courtesy and knowledge.
Their website and services are awesome. They keep a catalog of their library online which is very informative and well-maintained. They also have a delivery and reserve service, which is very convenient if you live in the area. -

On the corner of 40th street, in the heart of the garment district, you can find three great floors of comics, toys related to comics and more coveted (a.k.a. expensive) collectibles.
This is a fanboy's paradise in a great location. Entertainment industry newbies are constantly in here scouting for ideas for the next big blockbuster and their big break.
Midtown Comics will has the best selection of everything new from the big publishers. Every Wednesday afternoon is where you will find the most devoted fans lined up across the main racks for access to freshest issue of their favorite title.
Observe the manboys in their natural habitat, respectfully staying behind the line as they gingerly pull the second or third book from the pile under the presumption that it is untouched and pristine. More anal retentive fans will make sure they promptly place these books into plastic pouches and acid-free backing boards to preserve the elusive "mint" condition of their books.
This mega-store of Geek pursuits also hosts signings of famous artists and writers to draw even more followers to the ranks of animated chaos.
As a girlfriend of a fanboy, I am inclined to resent this place for the quality time it deprives me, but I have to respect them for their marketing savvy and the devotion it inspires... -

One f the best shops I have been in. The sales staff is very helpful. It is hard to get in and out of because of a very narrow staircase up there that gets very tight with people coming and going. They have back ssues as well as figures and graphic novels.

Bronx, NY
This place has become my LCS, which really surprised me, since I historically always liked the small independent shops.
There is something for everyone at this store, so when I drag a friend with me when I go to get my pull books, they are not completely thrown into a culture shock. The store is always very clean, and very well organized. On the rare occasion I can't find what i am looking for, the friendly staff will help me find it, or offer to look into special ordering. When I went away for the past three summers for work, It was a peice of cake for me to use their website to have my books shipped to me automatically once a month.
There are often a lot of tourist in there, due to its proximity to times square, and that can be annoying, I have thought about moving my service to their east side location, which is smaller but well stocked and staffed.
It can be a little impersonal - when i first went in to midtown, i thought, oh god its the Tower Records of comic books, and I still like to go to Saint Mark's for that old comic book shop feeling, but I have learned to really like the service and reliabity of Midtown Comics -
Review from Ryan D.
It's Midtown Comics, part 2! This is the location that, if you go to it, you might never want to buy comic books again. While I like how this location has more stuff (I actually walked to this location to get a back issue the other one didn't have one day, and they had one issue left! SCORE!), it's bogged down by the greater amount of PEOPLE who are EVERYWHERE. I came at like 2:00 PM on a Thursday and it was still packed. In fact, I couldn't even get to the new issues stands because all the people were standing in front of it. And not moving. Not even for people who obviously wanted to get by. I guess there is no honor among comic book nerds, ay?
While the second floor display cases are beautiful, I think such a vast amount of display-ing takes away from, well the tactile experience of holding the box of something I really want. In Midtown's defense, Forbidden Planet is set up pretty much the same way... but that really doesn't make it right. What I would like is some of the stuff displayed, most of the stuff in box, and some sort of order that they are all in. It's sort of random, as with the sister store, and not very intuitive how things are arranged and how to find the stuff I, personally would like to buy. Some things are grouped together, but not all. It's confusing.
The back issue split up with some being upstairs and some being downstairs also makes it confusing. I couldn't find anything the first time I was there, and it was mainly because I was looking for back issues. Also on the second floor, the "over 18" section seems a little... I dunno, MUCH for a comic book store near Times Square. And unnecessary. And it's enough of the store (taking up maybe 1/7 or 1/8 of the seconf floor) for me to complain about. It's one thing to have a top shelf, kids, but an "over 18" section? I'm here for comic books, not for porn. And not comic porn, either. That should be in the porn store.
Going to this comic book store makes me want to explore additional comic book store in New York City. Honestly, there has to be something better out there than THIS.Listed in: It's Almost Comic-al

I've been coming into Midtown comics since I was seventeen. Today was the last time I visited before I pack my bags and move permanently to the West Coast. I wanted to cry. Instead I bought a back issue of Dawn and a few new things I had never seen before but vowed to read on the plane. If you love comics or even if you're just getting someone addicted to them, bring them here.
The store is two floors of the most delicious volumes. Indies, a huge graphic novel selection, tons of back issues, all sorts of collectibles, and they even have a naughty section for all you lovers of more adult themed comics. Lots of hard to find stuff.
As far as staff go, Midtown has every shop beat. Friendly, hilarious, and knowledgeable, they are always willing to stop what they are doing to help you and even have a discussion on why Namor wears a speedo made of fish scales. -
Review from Derrick L.
Queens, NY
Best comic store in Manhattan! There are two levels. It has a huge collection of new and old comics, figures, clothes, DVDs, mangas, books, posters, magazines, etc. I could spend hours walking around in here and just reading the comics. I like how they stock the new comics every week. It's so easy to find what you are looking for. New comics on top (eye level) and older comics on the bottom. If you can't find something, the friendly staff is there to help. Well most of them are friendly. They are very knowledgeable as well. I always hear debates going on about how one superhero is better than another or just random facts about events occurring in certain comics. I feel so at home! HAHA!
Everyone tends to come in to look at the figures in the cases on the second level. These expensive figures are works of ART! If you have the money to purchase one of them, I say "YOU ARE SO LUCKY!" Yes, I am jealous of people who can afford them. Everyone can find a figure of a hero or villain they can fall in love with.
They hold signings every so often at the store. Bring your stuff to get signed by your favorite artist or writer. I waited one time for Olivia Munn to sign my magazines and her book which had come out. The wait was long as they typically are. The store was very organized and they kept things orderly. No one can cut in line. Everyone was able to get a picture and signatures.
If you live in New York and frequent the comic stores, I say come here and join the rewards type program that they offer. For every $100 you spend, you get $20 discount off your purchase which is redeemed once you hit that $100 mark. I often find myself getting that discount quite often. Guess I know where all my money goes.
This is one of my favorite Midtown Comics locations as it is most convenient for me. They have two other stores. One near South Street Seaport and one close to Grand Central Station.
THAT IS ALL! GEEK POWER! -
Review from Benson Y.
As much of a fan as I am about small mom and pop comic shops, sometimes I want the spectacle of a large scale shop with tons of product everywhere. Midtown Comics qualifies! The store is divided into two floors. One floor focuses on print and media material. Comic books, novels, magazines and DVDs. The second floor focuses on toys, statues and adult material (art books and so on). Their statue display is fantastic and worth the visit alone.
Unlike most comic shops nowadays, Midtown carries a *huge* selection of back issues. Their trade paperback stock is also amazing and it's one of the things that I primarily purchase from this shop.
The staff is always friendly and efficient. They'll always go out of their way to be of service and help you find what you're looking for. Join their various programs for good discounts. I belong to one that adds up your purchases to $100 and then offers you a significant discount on your next purchase. They'll also pull books for you as well. Drop by to give the geek in you some happy!Listed in: The Geek List

For a while there, I was trying to see all of the comic book stores in all of NYC. I think this is the best one there is. Great selection of currents and back-issues, two levels, helpful staff, and a "membership rewards" program (ask about it when you check out).
The downstairs is almost exclusively comic books and graphic novels. Make sure to visit upstairs for action figures, t-shirts, figurines, and other assorted, fun, comic-themed goodies (mugs, lunch boxes, magnets, calendars)!
