CO to CA move BLOG, DAY 1, Entry 8

So today's journey ends in Rawlins, WY, population 8800.

Contrary to what reading this may lead you to believe, I actually have fair experience in travel, and planning skills. I have driven fair distances in several countries, including 1000 miles where you need gas can strapped on back to make it through.

Rawlins was pre-picked as one of two likely spots to stop.

Thanks to the governor limiting me to 70 (which means I spend a lot of time at 50-55 climbing, and my right flip flop is wearing thin from standing on the pedal) I am not making awesome time. Its 2 more hours to the next decent size town, and I don't think I have it in me.

I normally don't like road trips. I grew up on an island for 18 years that was 21 miles long and 1 mile wide, 700 miles from the next landmass -  we thought 20 minutes in the car was a LONG way. Usually 4 hours is my max, then I become like a Garfield car toy, stuck on the window. My trick to long road trips (a) drive solo - that way the only person annoying me is me, and (b) audio books. These keep me totally engrossed. On my 4.5 day drive from Denver to the bottom of Baja Mexico, I went through 6.

Tonight's choice though sucks and is more a antidote for insomnia, not keeping one awake. Its about a girl from Pakistan who has an arranged marriage and moves to  London. (hey it was cheap on http://half.com....now I know why.)  3 CDs into it I am sick of waiting for a real storyline to emerge, and sick of faux Pakistani accents. This book will be punted today in exchange for Marley and Me - a story about a dog, yay! This will however mean a stops somewhere to replenish, or grab a device for my iPOD so I can listen to Podcasts.

Ok, my classic digression behind me, on to our show.

While I had pre-planned Rawlins, I had not booked a hotel, since I wasn't sure what kinda of speed I would make, and many variables could make this iffy. Research showed a surprising # of hotels, including Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express and a few others, fair choices for a rural area.

I pull into Hampton Inn since its a Hilton brand and I am high ranking status with them from biz travel. Full. Holiday Inn Express....full.. Stop #3....full. I curse and almost cry and the lady takes pity on me. Everything will be full she counsels, but there is a brand new Microtel one more exit that people don't know about that should have room.

I am tired, dirty, had too much caffeine and beef jerky, and ready to hit the beer I bought, so I pray to the karma Goddess.

Its on Locust Rd....not a good sign. I have done a decent amount of rural travel, as we have a portfolio of rural Telcos as clients, I know what you normally get at these - horrid bedding and pillows - my one requirement in a hotel is decent bedding and a pillow that isn't 3 feet thick.

The place is indeed new and well done (for a budget place). They have space. I get misty eyed. They are friendly give me my key, and get my stuff and head up.

For $100 room at Microtel its not bad. The bedding is good. It has free Wifi and free US long distance. It has a stainless steel microwave and mini fridge.  Score.

Minuses.....still really thick pillows, which make it hard for me to sleep. And the highway noise is significant. Ask for a room on the other side.
I end up sleeping lightly, something unusual for me, despite fatigue a melatonin and a L-tryptophan.(amino acid helps sleep.)

This will make Day 2 a challenge. Thank the Goddess for Red Bull.

Is this a 4 star hotel. No. But for Rawlins, WY, it is.

Tonights stop is supposed to be Reno. That is 800+ miles, and based on last nights time...iffy. I had planned a 12 hour day, but this may take 14. Not enough Red Bull exists for this. We shall see.
