I love computers and this is the store if you need a fix. It have everything you can think for your computer. My first time in the store I was shocked. I walked through for about an hour. It is a easy store to navigate. Help to the right, check out to the left...and all the computing equipment you can think of straight back. I was really excited to find out they carried APPLES!!
Repair and Customer service, is great. They take your computer in check for a warranty, get it out and get it fixed. I have a computer getting fixed now. There is one repair guy that will give you a battle but, He is the coolest guy there and honest. Customer Service is great too, works are everywhere and ready to help at anytime.
As far as prices they only thing I can say is CHEAP... Micro Center is very affordable. If you need any computing stuff you should make Micro Center your first stop.
I entered the store with suspicion given my deep-rooted hatred of any retail electronics stores and their ignorant sales people. Plus, the store used to be CompUSA, so my expectations couldn't have been any lower.
But man, this place is geek heaven! Heaven for geeks looking for any sort of computer part they're after in a modern, retail setting. And it's heaven if you have a thing for geeks, because the store is brimming with the pale and the fashion-challenged.
The prices are competitively lower than one you could get at Best Buy or Target, and not all that higher than what you could find online.
Most importantly, the customer service is amazingly helpful (although a tad scarce). If you ask someone for help and they find a product for you, they will put their ID sticker on the box so you can always reference them. Brilliant!
Issue:
My bossy big brother bought my mom an Ipod Touch for her bday and then assigned me the responsibility to set it up and show her how to use it while I visit this month. HARK! I arrive to find out that my parents don't have a wireless router at their new place yet. hold up wait a minute!
Plan of Action:
As I'm moseying around, I find a sale paper from MicroCenter on the coffee table advertising a netgear router for $39.99 (are you outta yo minnnd?) We went to MC today to purchase it, but couldn't find it on the shelf. The helpful sales guy locates it in no time, we head to the checkout and then home.
Result:
I set the WHOLE thing up by myself (well, w/ a few dramatic moments, especially when my dad told me I needed to peel the sticker off the ethernet jacks.heh)
I proclaimed: "I got it to work!! I'm a genius!!"
Mom (without looking up from her magazine) : "Ya right Preeti, vun vireless router does not make a genius." *
Dad (to mom): "Do NOT trivialize any of her accomplishments!"
Afterthought:
hehe...it pays to be the cutest...ahem... and the kid no one has lofty expectations for... :-P

Best computer store in the area for computer geeks or bargain hunters. Store offers nearly everything you'll need for your computer, including parts. Decent selection of magazines and books.
If you like computers this is your store. If you've ever thought about building your own computer, or buying parts to upgrade your computer, this is the place to go. Not only do they carry a LOT of stuff they have great prices to boot. Not always the cheapest, but if u need something right away it will do. Sometimes things are unnaturally cheap here though. (For example intel corei7 920 CPUs $199! they're like $270 at newegg! I literally adjusted my glasses as i typed that :-P)
Their full computers are decently priced too i guess. I don't really pay attention to pre-built stuff anymore since i've had nothing but headaches with them. Once more (with feeling) if you need parts, go here.
cool place, i'd call it the"IKEA" for computers but their service area sux expecially on the phone...... :(
I feel like a kid in a candy store at this Microcenter. A geeks paradise. I really enjoy the selection they have and the great prices. The staff are nice and pretty informed about what they are selling but you will run into the odd sleezy salesman but generally they are good.
They carry a lot of computer accessories that stores like Best Buy can't compete with. Where else can you get latest CPU or a new pump for your water cooled rig?
They even sell case modding items like rad grills, vandal switches, LED's etc. I always end up buying goodies just because they have such a variety.
Also they match Newegg's prices so you can get some pretty impressive deals and they have great sales all the time. A Core i7 920 for $200? Thank you very much, I'll take one!
A great store all around. A computer geeks wet dream.
It used to be that the only place that computer geeks could turn to for some computer parts was on the internet. That usually wasn't a problem because we could read reviews on the products and find a great deal. Not having a dependable brick and mortar store for computer organs became a problem when you couldn't wait for shipping and handling.
And that's where Micro Center fills that void. To west coasters, think of Micro Center as the Fry's of the east coast. Filled with enough computer parts and electronics to make a geek squeal, this place will satisfy most of your needs. It's the only place I know that offers a wide enough selection to build a computer from scratch and also has a little cafe.
They have a bare bones approach to interior design but I guess it shows in their prices. While I'm sure online retailers can beat their prices, Micro Center has most other retailers beat. They even have out of the box hard drives that are cheaper than their in-box versions - something that you won't find at Best Buy.
BEST local computer shop!
If i need a computer part, and quick, this is usually the cheapest and best place to go. They have a very good selection and THANKFULLY are in rockville now!
as far as electronic stores go that are not online, in the dc area, the micro centers are probably the best. (in my humble opinion)
first of all, they sell relevant electronics at great prices
second, the people there actually know what they are talking about
the other day i went to best buy to buy a fire wire cable. a guy walked up to me right away, kindly greeted me, and asked me if i needed help finding anything. i asked him where the firewire cables were. then he walked around for a bit (me following) and I was finally led to a counter where he asked another guy ("the pro") where the fire wire cables were. so "the pro" took me over to where the USB cables were and he looked them over for a little bit and then told me that they didn't sell fire wire cables and apologized and walked away. my little brother who was with me leaned forward and picked up a fire wire cable, just in the same spot where the guy was looking. these guys are stupid or something.
anyways, i have never had a problem at the micro center where the employees can't even find their own product!
First time I been here was the first time I heard about Micro Center. I'd say they are the closest competitor to Best Buy for a while now, but Best Buy is still a much much better experience because of the layout of their store alone. Prices here are comparable but still cheaper than BB.. the employees here are A LOT more helpful and actually have some clue to what they are talking about. There is more availability in terms of computer hardware also, but if you are smart like me.. newegg is the way =D.
If you have not been here before, you'll be shocked how much inventory and highend computers, notebooks, digital camera and camcorders they have here. I don't recall if I saw any TV's (I'm sure they do), but they have really good electronics. I don't normally purchase anything retail, so I'll probably go to BestBuy next time because it is more pretty to look around there hehe. This is still a very nice place though =D
Before you go to any Micro Center be sure to check out their website and see if there is any specials or prices drops, it usually applies to all the microcenters. The listed prices on the shelves are different from the site and they will compare and change the prices for you.....

My friend could've stayed in Micro Center all day and would've had she not spent a good chunk of money. This place is a hidden gem. Firstly, it has everything - everything you need to set up a home office, entertainment center, game, build your own computers, you name it. The prices are really competitive and there's a board in the store that compares their prices to New Egg. There are also really good in store deals. The service is fantastic with at least 15 different people asking us if we needed anything. The staff was definitely more knowledgeable than other computer/ electronic stores we've been to and go above and beyond to ask each other or look up an answer to a question they don't know.
This place is terrible.
First of all, if you are NOT one of the aforementioned geeks, good luck understanding how things are laid out in the store. For example, what exactly about the term "Knowledge Bar" indicates that this is the department you should go to for repairs? Nothing on the sign does, that's for sure.
Once I had asked where to go for repairs at "customer service" (which was the only department I could see that seemed remotely applicable), I went to the Knowledge Bar and had to sit around for a half hour, being studiously ignored by the resident geeks, as they helped others, but didn't even give me a pager, which is what I would need to be serviced at the "bar" (another customer had to tell me). After requesting a pager twice, I finally got one, was served within another 10 minutes.
My total wait time at the "bar" was very long-- but no one on the phone when I called ahead of time told me it would be, or suggested a low-traffic time, or to schedule an appointment. Typical complete lack of common-sense customer-mindedness and communication, as I always experience with computer people.
Then, the guy who talked to me tried to sell me other services before addressing what I needed for my particular problem, thus confusing me. He looked a little embarrassed when I called him on it.
So he then told me my problem (computer won't turn on) was likely electrical, but they would need to run a diagnostic to determine the cause, paid in advance. Fine. He quoted the time it would take as 3-4 days.
NINE days later, I called and asked what was up. Not only was my repair not finished yet, they hadn't even STARTED it. No apology, obviously no effort to call the customer with an update. He is now supposed to "take a look at it" and call me back in a couple hours. But I wonder, do they only finish jobs if customers prod them?
The employees are obviously indifferent about service or communicating clearly with customers. Maybe they are only interested in selling software and gadgets. If so they should not offer repair services.
I went to Micro Center based on Yelp reviews, but perhaps I should have realized that reviewers who were geeking out about the products offered would not be a guide for a technology outsider like me. The problem is, there just aren't many places to get computers repaired. I thought that since this place is a chain, it would at least be professional and organized and fast (more important to me than price, since how am I supposed to know what a good price is for this stuff?). They were none of those things.
Whoo dawg, geek heaven.
(Yes, it's in Rockville, and stop with the R.E.M. joke, we've heard it, and went back anyway.)
Here's how awesome Microcenter is: the people who work there have repeatedly told me where to buy stuff cheaper online.
Let us pause now, oh denizens of capitalism, to ponder the immortal acronym "WTF???".
Yeah, that's right. I was looking through the laptops, and leering lustily at the uberdelectable eeepc, and talking to the guy that worked there. He said "it doesn't have much disk space, but you can get a 4gig external card from http://newegg.com, and stick it in the slot."
And lo, I was filled with WTF, and I said unto him:
"Dude, you can't say that!"
And he saideth back to me:
"Of course I can. It's cheaper there than here. I want you to know how to get the cheapest, most effective system for your money."
And lo, my head a sploded.
The next week (when I could resist no longer and came back to buy one), another guy told me "don't get the warranty, it's not worth it for a $350 machine.
When's the last time that happened to you at BestBuy? Oh right, never.
This place used to be a CompUSA, and while the folks that worked there were nice and all, they didn't come anywhere *close* to being as helpful, informative, and honest as the people at Microcenter. That's exactly the sort of thing that makes me want to come back and spend gobs of money.
I wish I had more gobs of money.
Also, if you've ever been to the Microcenter in that other bastion of suburban oblivion, Fairfax VA, I think you'll agree that this one is a lot nicer. Or at least if they've remodeled the Fairfax location too, I don't know about it.
Bonus tip because I LIKE you, I really LIKE you:
If you're coming up the pike from points south, it's a lot easier to get to Microcenter if you make a left at the light on Montrose and the right on Jefferson, and park in the parking lot where the Panera is. Go up the escalator.
Also, free internet. No really, a machine sitting there that's on the internet that you can use to compare the price of that memory card at http://Newegg.com.
Head a splodes again.
This is Toys R Us for nerds. Imagine - aisles and aisles of computer parts you never have dreamed of in all your days, my friends. If you seek a water-cooling setup that will ensure that you will never again have sex, then seek no longer.
The employees match their environs perfectly. When I purchased computer parts last year, a young gent named José helped me find what I was looking for. He was THE stereotype - he had the speech impediment, the social ineptitude tantamount to autism, the big glasses...he WAS Microcenter. In the midst of a sell, his phone rang.
"No mom. I'm with a cuschtomer. Mom! No...okay. No, I schpent it on my Geforce 8800 SLI setup, DUH! Mom, mom, I have to go. I love you too."
"Was that your mom?"
"Yesch."
"What did she want?"
"She wanted to know what kind of scheareal I wanted."
"What kind of cereal did you want?"
"Froot Loops."
I love you, José.
If you've ever been to a Microcenter store anywhere, you know they're geek heaven. But this brand new MicroCenter is not like those others. It's bigger, nicer, and has more "geek stuff" than any other store I've seen.
One of the only computer stores that caters to actual geeks, you can find just about anything to build your own PC here, from individual motherboard screws to the coolest water-cooling rigs. The new store also has a "knowledge bar" (gee, wonder what fruit company they got that idea from?) where you can get a cup of coffee and talk with someone about your computer woes. Sadly, my lone exchange found someone not quite as geeky as you'd hope behind the bar, but I'm told they're still in training.
This store is designed to be much more pleasing to the eye than your normal computer store with bare metal shelves. The aisles are clearly marked, the aisles and displays nicely polished wood. They've clearly put a lot of thought into designing their new store prototype.
If you need to pick up anything for your computer, this is the place to stop. Also, they have a large Mac section, which is always a plus.
It's the best local computer store in DC area. Great selection and good prices. And now they even have helpful staff who could answer questions. If they don't know, they'll get someone. I used to go to the one at Fairfax, but now they one much closer by.
When I first walked in here my jaw dropped and all I could think was "Holy shit, this place rules". Its really nice inside, has a huge "build your own computer" area, and the staff have actually been friendly and helpful. For the most part, the prices here are competitive with online retailers. If you need anything computer related, this is the place to go!
