8 reviews for Micke Grove Zoo
Micke Grove Park is a gem in a otherwise vast expanse of vineyards, farmland and track homes. One thing you get when you visit this park is a good variety of activities.
For the young children there is an amusement park with various rides.
For the researcher there is a dedicated agricultural museum.
For the family there is a zoo.
For the couples to be vast areas for outdoor weddings with a clubhouse.
For the bored father a 5 minute walk to the adjacent golf course.
For the plant lover a Japanese Garden.
For the shade/bbq lover vast expanse of cool shade from towering oaks.
For the group facilitator/promoter several large reservable covered areas with tables. With room to hold multiple events simultaneously.
Thus many trade shows are held each year at this park.
Micke Grove Park is a good size park offering something positive for just about anyone.
As for the animals I think they could really use a larger more humane environment. However, without the animals there isn't an available teaching area for children for over 30+ miles. And because of the underfunding of this park, environmental change comes slow.
The admission price is nothing compared to the advantages of finding a place that can hold so many simultaneous venues.

Small town zoo, small town prices. Hey, did you really expect anything more for the location? Adding an endangered species to the collection would be akin to The Beckhams moving to Lodi. It just isn't going to happen. But for what it has to offer I consider it to be a great asset to the community!
Oh the memories of this place!

I am really torn about how to rate this place. It gets 5-stars for value for your money.
For a $2 admission, you get quite a bit for your money. It's a very small zoo, but we managed to spend a good hour in there and there's a relatively decent variety of animals as well.
I don't believe that it is worth driving out there to see it if you don't live nearby or aren't already in the area for something else.
They have two different types of lemurs, baboons, a mountain lion and snow leopard (they alternate days that these two guys are out on display because they 'share' the same enclosure), spider monkeys, marmosets, tamarins, birds, reptiles, bats, sea lions...
There's a photo op near the tortoises, where they have a huge tortoise statue that you can climb and sit on... There's a new section of the zoo that is currently under construction, but it looks like they'll be including some new animals.
I am torn about the rating because these animals are caged in such SMALL enclosures and it's kind of sad to see. For example, there was this very cute white-handed gibbon swinging around trying to interact with us from his enclosure, but when I looked closely at the pictures I took, he was frowning and just looked SO unhappy.

Micke Grove is a terrible place for children and animals. The conditions in which the animals live are less than compassionate. There may (or may not) be a caring staff, but to see so many animals pacing and depressed is not a good place to take children. It is just sad... especially for the adults who know better.
You can learn about and enjoy animals much more by watching them on Discovery Channel or going to a reputable zoo that has better conditions for the animals.

I actually got married in the japanese garden... and it was awesome not having to drive to the reception. We rented out the hall right across the park, and it was pretty reasonable. They didn't really let us do much with the decorations... apparantly keeping the walls thumbtack-free is more important than customers pretty pretty memories. Anyhow, the zoo is cool, cause who woulda thought Lodi had a zoo? Its cheap, and fun, but nothing too exotic. Basically, if you like the outdoors/wildlife, this is the place... and its close to home.

I hate family reunions. They're as awkward as they are fake. If you've got a very tight family, more power to ya. Mine wasn't, and Micke Grove Park, and its zoo, was the personification of all that wasn't right with my mom's side of the family and these annual death-fests. My sister and I would walk into the zoo and all we would see were some of the saddest, most mentally distressed animals I had ever laid eyes upon. Have you ever seen a bear pace back and forth, only to curl up next to a concrete "log" and make noises as if it were whimpering to itself? A monkey so sad and depressed it would occasionally miss a chain mid-swing, fall to the ground and stay there, not out of injury but out of sheer apathy? A lone seal that stares at you with eyes that beg you to end its suffering? You can, at Micke Grove Zoo. You can also see their human counterparts at my mom's side's family reunions.

while it is not exactly an accredited zoo... micke grove still has it's charm. the two dollar entrance fee, for example. and the tiny chinese alligator, and those funny sea lions.
i am a zoo lover, and i stand by this local gem. give me caged animals, or give me death.

I've been going here my whole LIFE, literally. I remember going there when i was 4 just having the typical BBQ's with the family, then going to the zoo watching the sea lions. good stuff. now; parking is about $6 a car and if you want to go to the zoo it's about $10 I believe. its good for LOCALS, don't go out of your way to come here or anything like that, it's a nice hang out spot on a bored day, I also like the japanese garden.
