I know that one of the wonders of  New York is supposed to be all these mom and pop stores that specialize in one thing, but hell if that doesn't make it hard to find what you need when you want it.  As far as I know, Michael's is the only store in this neighborhood that sells scrapbook and other paper crafts-like material in one easy to find place.  Cardeology and Papyrus are both overpriced and only sell high-end stuff, while Paper House (rather contradictorily) doesn't actually sell much paper.

I've only been here on a weekday night, and it's pretty dead then, but they have so many registers and such an extensive checkout line set up it must be busier at other times.  I was overjoyed to just wander this place, but I noticed that there were practically no salespeople on the floor.  Scrapbooking paper here is pretty okay-priced, frames can be super cheap, but their calligraphy section is pitiful.  Other sections include bridal/wedding, custom framing (as if there aren't already enough of those stores around already), a small poster selection, home decorating (think fake plants), foam crafts, felt, yarn, some basic sewing supplies, rhinestones, jewelry-making supplies, amn aisle of just ribbons, canvas, paints etc, and lots of 10 for $10 items.  They also strangely have a cake decorating section.

If you sign up for their online newsletter, you get a 50% off coupon that you can use on one item.  They also have "madness" sales where everything in the store is 25% off, including clearance items.

Michael's is

Where I can drop $200 in 15 minutes of browsing.
Where I have fun times on rainy days.
Where I get inspiration for a great Halloween costume.
Where presents get kicked up a notch.
Where there is not one, but four sizes of available iron-on rhinestone skull and crossbones for my jean jacket.
Where when I'm poor and looking for entertainment, I find it.
Where birdhouses exist in many variations.
Where dozens of different brushes reinvent the line.
Where knitting becomes a possibility.
Where $1 spools of ribbon become a necessity.
Where kids and big kids alike find something new to try.
Where creative muscles get a great workout!

I wish this location was as big as the suburban Michael's of my youth, but the selection is still enough to take me to my happy place. I wish there was fabric but the jewelry, ribbon, paint, sewing, scrapbooking, crayola, brush, canvas, craft, paper, and seasonal sections almost make up for it.

This Michael's is the second store to open in this shopping center, and  with the addition of the (also already open) Whole Foods, Crumbs, BoA, Modell's, Borders, TJMaxx, and the farmers market, the developers have added some serious weight to the neighborhood amenities. I work nearby, and now do a lot of my shopping on weeknights after work instead of using up my weekends running around.

I was so excited to hear that a Michael's opened up on the upper west side near where I live. I needed some felt for a halloween costume and I didn't want to go to the garment district to get the tiny piece that I needed.  So I yelped and found out that this store had just opened. It was great! It had everything I needed and more! Everything is at reasonable prices too. It's just great to have somewhere I can get all the crafty things I need for the holidays, for great prices and with convenience. Check this place out. It'll make you want to start tons of new art projects! The sales people were friendly and helpful too.
