My place of work recently had a Health and Wellness fair, and Michael Todd Salon & Spa was one of the vendors that turned up, handing out coupons and telling us about their services. They're an Aveda lifestyle salon, meaning that they use all the Aveda products. Since I had the coupon, and I wanted to try someplace different from Mario Tricoci for a change, I made appointments for a massage and facial.
There was a delay in starting my massage (I was booked at 3 and they came out and said it would be about 15 minutes late), so I enjoyed the complimentary foot soak in a silver bowl beforehand. Then my massage therapist came out to discuss my needs and what we'd need to focus on. I had booked the elemental massage, and she said she would work in the use of hot stones.
The Elemental Nature massage is their basic massage, which incorporates aromatherapy (you choose from among multiple fragrance oil options) and utilizes a variety of massage techniques (mine included Swedish, some deep tissue and then hot stones as well).
There was a bit of a language barrier with the massage therapist, so I just kind of "mm-hmm"ed along with whatever she was saying and let her do her thing. The drapery was somewhat awkward; she had it pulled fairly low to begin with and it rode lower as she worked, so that was a little odd -- nothing I couldn't deal with, but hyper-modest people might freak out.
The hot stones here worked better than another stone massage I'd had elsewhere; they weren't overly oily, though a few times they did get tangled in my hair (even though the therapist had pulled my hair up in a band at the beginning, it was still managing to get caught by the stones -- ouch! My hair is not even very long).
Overall it was a very relaxing massage, though at the end the therapist said, "You aren't smiling!" I was barely awake! Oh well. It was definitely beneficial to all my sore places, and I can move things that had been locked up for a while, so that's the most important part, smiling or not.
Since I have been having some stress-related breakouts of late, I upgraded to the Outer Peace for my facial. I think the facial may have been just as relaxing as the massage, and my aesthetician, Asta, provided me with lots of information about what different trigger points indicate etc. She is also studying naturopathic medicine, so we discussed that, since it's tied into the "whole body" concept (the skin being the "third kidney" for the body, so toxins and stress come out in the complexion).
The facial itself incorporated aromatherapy, then exfoliation, cleansing, and extraction, then an extended massage of the face, neck and hands, while the feet are swaddled in warm towels. I have had many facials in my life (one of my best friends in another state is an aesthetician who once owned a spa), but this may have been the most comprehensive one.
I would certainly come back to Michael Todd to have another facial with Asta. As for the massage, it was certainly beneficial, but I will most likely continue with my therapist Carey at Mario Tricoci.
As for the spa itself, it is separated off from the lobby/shop and the salon, but there was still some sound bleed-through when I was in the massage room (even through two closed doors and a hallway); I couldn't hear anything when I was in the facial room, further up the hall. The waiting area is small (a chair and a bench), so things may get cramped when people come to redeem those holiday gift certificates.
I look forward to trying more of their offerings. -

I went here a couple months ago to get an updo. Since a family friend works there I was able to get a bit of a discount on my updo. I was EXTREMELY pleased with my updo, which took about 1.5 hours to finish, and I loved the service here!
My hairstylist was Ashley (there are two of them, the one who did my hair was very petite with blonde hair) and she was incredible! Very young but styled my hair very well!
The interior of this place is magnificent and it's very clean and tidy. All the other hairstylists were extremely welcoming and my experience here was very good.
I think my only complaints are that the service up at the front is not always on par with the service with the hairstylists, but I'll let that slide, and that it's rather expensive to go very often. Otherwise, if I had the money and time to do my hair here, I would! -

I have been going here since they opened in June, & I started at their other location in Oswego in Oct of '06. I started seeing the owner @ that time & she was great, always super friendly & accommodating. She also gave great haircuts( I have shortish curly hair) Awhile back she raised her prices($100 ea time including tip) & I had to rethink how often I saw her so I started seeing a close friend for most of my haircuts(4-6wks) & W less. Well I made an appt. with W about a week ago. I specifically asked for her, they called me the day before & confirmed my haircut with W. I show up yesterday, she sees me, asks where I've been, I explained that I had been trying to support my friend , but I missed W's haircuts. She then tells me, "did they tell you I'm not really cutting hair anymore? let me introduce you to Kristina." Kristina comes out, we meet, but she's in the middle of finishing up another client so I have to wait because W decided that she didn't want to cut my hair, after I drove there & confirmed my appt twice. BAD & she's the owner!!!! I almost walked out but decided to give Kristina a chance. She also has naturally curly hair & after awhile I calmed down so she was nice & helpful. She was the only thing that saved that whole experience. So my word of warning, you might show up & get pawned off on someone else. If you have curly hair & you like Aveda products, then try out Kristina, she seems like she really knew how to cut curls.
