I came to Dr. Yung's office last year.  I have to say it was good experience.  I actually haven't been to a dentist office for a long time.  When I set up an appointment by phone, the person on the phone sounded very upbeat and positive.  When I went to my first appointment, I was already greeted by most of the staff.  I didn't even have to wait too long for them to call me in and when they did call me in, they went to work right away.  Before going to work on my teeth, the dentist asked me lots of question about myself like "how's you day?" or "what do you do?"  They explained my costs before the work was done and while they were working on my teeth, they always asked me if I was okay.  They definitely care about the service they provide and the patients they see.  I remember one time, at another dentist's office, I waited so long on the patient chair that I fell asleep.  Over here, the work is done very efficient and with precision.  My crown couldn't have fit any more perfect in my mouth and the person who worked on it, Dr. Navarro, was determined to get it in perfect.  I even felt kinda bad for having such messed up teeth and putting her through it.  haha!!  All in all, love the place at Dr. Yung's office.  Already been recommending it to my friends.

I have toiled over writing this review for the last few months, but since this is about your TEETH, and not a good or bad hamburger, I decided it necessary I'm sorry it's so long....

The good things about DR. Yung's office, is that it is very clean and tidy, and most of his staff are very polite and friendly.
Having said that, how this guy gets voted Dentist of the Year is a mystery to me.

I saw Dr. Yung over a period of about 12 months, after my initial exam I was given a laundry list of procedures including several crowns, fillings etc...
It is clear to me now, that maxing out their patient's benefits is high priority to Dr. Yung.
Several times while waiting in the chair, I could hear him in the next room telling that patient not to let their "benefits go to waste", and they should consider Invisaligns.
I realized he says this to everyone weather they need braces or not.
He tried to sell me Invisaligns EVERYTIME I sat in his chair.
(I have ONE, slightly crooked tooth on my bottom incisors, it has been crooked my whole life and has never caused me problems.)

I had 4 crowns put on in 8 months, after the 4th crown, Dr. Yung said out loud to me after he had cemented it, that the crown was off, and too far apart from the nearest tooth, causing a "food trap". He sent me home, saying to watch it and maybe my teeth would move into place naturally. (??)
After about 2 weeks, I started having pain in that area, food was definitely being trapped in the space, so I went back. Dr. Yung  (of course) denied having said that he put it on crooked, and there was nothing wrong, that maybe the tooth was rotten and I need a root canal.
"HUH? You just put that crown on, now you want to drill through it? Couldn't you have seen that the tooth needed a RC before putting the $900 crown on?"

Next I told him, I felt like my bite was off, my teeth felt different.
He did his paper test, scraped around and said...."well it's all because of this bottom tooth, you need Invisaligns or it's only going to get worse"
I left feeling really weird.  Was I just manipulated to feel like the problems with my NEW crowns are my fault, cause I won't pay for Invisaligns?
About 10 days later the veneer I've had for 10 years, on my front tooth, cracked in half. Dr.Yung was unavailable, so Dr. Navaro saw me and fitted me for a new veneer.
I asked her if it was possible that all the new crowns in my mouth were pushing my teeth together, could the pressure have cracked my veneer?
I was told flat out NO that was not possible. (although it actually is possible)

My new veneer ended up turning in to the worst DENTAL NIGHTMARE ever!
Dr. Navaro made the FIRST veneer the wrong color, so it had to be redone taking an additional week, which means I had to walk around with a temporary that kept falling off for almost 4 weeks.
2 weeks after she put the new veneer on, IT FELL OFF! Just popped off while I was eating breakfast. The office was not very accommodating with my schedule, so I walked around with a jacked up front tooth for a week.

They actually acted like it was no big deal that the veneer had fallen off! When I bitched at Dr. Navaro about it, she sent  Dr. Young acted like he was doing me a favor by gluing the veneer back in, and wasn't going to charge me! But if it fell off again, He would have to charge me in the future.
WHAT? ARE YOU KIDDING? It should not have fallen off at all!!!!
And then he tried to sell me Invisalines, AGAIN saying my slightly crooked bottom tooth was hitting the veneer and that's why it popped off!

If a dentist knows how to apply a veneer or a crown it should never just fall off, nor should it feel weird and make all your teeth move. My old veneer and my slightly crooked front tooth lived together in my mouth for ten years, without a problem.

Dr, Yung is consumed with himself and how much money he can make off of each patient, he barely took responsibility for all the mishaps, and never once offered me any kind of alternative to straightening my slightly crooked tooth, like a simple night retainer.
Needles to say every time I bite into something I am in fear of my veneer falling off.

Oh and I cant forget the billing mistakes the office made after every visit....$200- $300 bills I would get in the mail, after I had paid my co-pay at time of services, all were mistakes on their part, but I would have to spend half an hour on the phone arguing with the girls that I don't owe  them any more money.

He is the worst dentist I have ever been too.

Called to schedule a teeth cleaning for me and another person.  Questions were asked of us and the appointments made. We made clear: No X Rays!

Appointment time arrived and after filling out forms, was told that this appointment was NOT for a cleaning but for an exam.  Was told an exam must be scheduled first, and a cleaning later.  At the beginning of the exam, it was made clear again that we didn't want x rays.  The very nice dentist continued to push x rays with dire warnings of lesions and other issues if we didn't.

Finally I got up and said I was leaving.  I wasn't going to get my cleaning.  I was being forced to spend time and money on an exam I didn't ask for.  I was being aggressively sold x rays even after I made it clear I didn't want them.  I told them I would pay for the beginning of the exam.  They didn't charge me.  They were kind and apologetic but not interested at all in making it right.

There is nothing on their website today about having to go twice in order to get a teeth cleaning.

It SEEMS, like some people have already said here, that this particular operation is overly concerned about getting money out of their customers every way they can.

    Not cool.

I came to see Dr. Kimberly Foon at this office when I was in search of a new dentist. She is an awesome dentist--very sweet and attentive. She talked me through procedures, and definitely did not rush anything. For the first exam, she checked everything out and was very thorough.  She also had to deal with a cavity of mine, and she has gentle yet effective hands. She made the whole process of getting a filling not-so-scary, and talked me through everything, while maintaining friendly chatter, as well as keeping me as comfortable as is possible.

She's definitely going to be my dentist for years to come!

After going to Dr. Yung for a few years I finally stopped and changed dentists because I felt that he was requiring unnecessary dental work and was very uncommunicative - except when it came to billing. Both my husband and I had been seeing him. Last year he told my husband that he would need 2 cavities filled. On the day of the appointment he told him it was 4. After doing the procedures my husband was then handed a large bill of several hundred dollars. When I called to find out why, I was told that the type of fillings he was given was not covered by our insurance. However, at no point was my husband informed of this before the procedure. When I complained that you can't charge someone without informing them that it will cost a lot, I was told that they would look into the bill and try to fix the situation.

I heard nothing for several months, assuming that Dr. Yung finally did the right thing, and despite my not liking his services for other reasons, at least he would do the ethical thing by absorbing the charges. However, out of the blue today we got a $205 bill with no details whatsoever of the source of the charges. I can only assume it was for my husband's dental work.

UPDATE: I spoke with a very nice person named Whitney who agreed that it was not fair to be charged for procedures whose cost were not discussed before hand. She canceled the charge which I very much appreciate!

    11/10/2010 1 Check-in Here

Dr. Yung was first recommended to me by Jason J and Siao J about 2 years ago. Sadly, back then I had an HMO, which he did not take. After a disastrous experience at a local office and reading some awful reviews about other dentists who were within the HMO network, I decided to wait a whole year until I could switch to a PPO plan.

When January finally rolled around and I was able to make the switch, I was disheartened to find out that Dr. Yung was out-of-network, which means my insurance only covers roughly 50%. STILL, I decided to give it a chance and boy am I glad I did.

Everyone in the office is just so incredibly nice and caring. When I had a question about my insurance, the receptionist called me back multiple times to share with me what she found out from my insurance company and made sure I knew exactly how much I was going to be paying. The hygenists were friendly and extremely thorough with the clean up.

I had four cavities which carved a hole a few hundred dollars deep in my pockets. BUT, for Dr. Yung, I'm willing to part from my stingy Chinawoman ways and pay however much I need to get a quality checkup.

An added perk is that Dr. Yung takes Saturday appointments, which is crucial for me since I work quite some distance away.

I got a nice little surprise in the mail a couple of days ago. It was a check for $28.80. It was for overpayment of services.

    Integrity, ethics, HONESTY, etc...

Dr. Yung is on his way to being voted the best dentist in Pasadena for like the bajillionth year in a row.

    Thank you, Dr. Yung!

Been going to this guy for the past 3 years or so..  It took me a while to pick out a dentist because I was picky about who would be diggin' in my teeth.  He is an EXCELLENT dentist-- very personable, offers good advice, and has a super friendly staff.  He's young, professional, and came from one of the top dental schools here in the US.

I've recommended 3-4 friends to him and they all love him too.  If you're looking for a good dentist in the Pasadena area-- I high recommend him.

Just a quick note though-- He only takes PPO insurance so HMO'ers are lucked out.

These people are truly caring!  I'll give one excellent example (only because that is how yelp is laid out), but *know* that I can give an example for EVERY visit I have ever had.
First a bit of background to lay context.  I should say that I'm a scardy cat.  BIG TIME.  When my 'adult' teeth came in I had a full extraneous set.  It's a genetic quark.  When I went to get braces, I had over 70 teeth in my mouth.  The extraneous set had no nerves (thank god!); and the orthodontist wanted to do everything himself to document "my case" (what a way to make a girl feel special) because it was just SO "incredible".  That bastard pulled my teeth (the extraneous set, and the extra baby teeth that couldn't fall out due to crowding) in three, yes three, different visits.  Only stopping because of too much blood.  He was an ORTHODONTIST not a surgeon.  That means this little girl got NO pain killers and my teeth forcefully yanked out by improper instruments.  Needless to say, I have a fear of all things dental.

Why the backstory?  Because when I say I TRUST Dr. Yung (and staff), you my reader need to know that it does not come easy.  When I go get the very few fillings I have had done, I'm greeted with care and compassion.  Everyone there knows my story, and takes every extra step to make sure that I feel safe.  One time, I went to get my teeth whitened.  When I was in the chair I got a bit chilled, the tech not only got me a blanket but she TUCKED me in!  It was just the cutest and sweetest darn thing!  I know I can give so many other examples, but to me this shows how they all will go out of their way to give you that extra, but that extra can only come from the heart.

I will finish by saying that I have (and will again) baked cookies for Dr. Yung (and staff, and family).  From scratch.  With a minimum of three different cookie types.  I say this because I doubt that in ANY other review of other dentists will you hear of a patient baking cookies for the dentist.  Thats because Dr. Yung is *just* that awesome.

So growing up with braces, i loathed the dentists office. I'd been to  about 4-5 dentist growing up and never found one that I liked.  After hearing about Dr. Yung  from an assistant at another dental office, I booked an apt to see him.

The staff was welcoming. The office has a variety of magazines to read to comfort those pre-dental visit nerves. Dr. Yung is very knowledgeable & friendly. His support team is wonderfully pleasant as well. They keep you well informed about everything that's going on with those pearly whites.

This is the one dentist that I don't mind sharing with others because he is just that good.

After a very bad experience with another dental office, I followed Yelp to Michael Yung.  Oh, thank God!  I always leave their office happy... Getting your teeth cared for at their office is a great way to start the day.  :-)

The office is beautiful, the staff are friendly and personable, happy, thorough, honest, efficient, knowledgeable, and wonderful in pretty much every way you want a dentist or hygienist to be.

They keep thorough computerized records including highlighting potential problem areas, are conservative about the amount of x-ray exposure they put you through (both by using better technology and only taking the minimum x-rays required for keeping a proper eye on your health), and don't push (or even suggest) gimmicks or unnecessary treatments.  They took good care of me while I still had braces and gave me a thorough look-over as soon as I got them off (no problems!).

I really wanted to find a dental group that I felt I could trust, and I really trust these guys and am so glad that I moved to their office.

The five star is for my experience with the Hygienist in 2008.  I didn't get the opportunity to meet the Dentist since he had to go out of town that day.  Which was fine, we had a great experience with Jason the RDH.  He checked my pockets, gave me a look over exam (decline xrays that day), and spent ample time focusing on cleaning my teeth.

The staff and the Dentist, are very friendly and warm and makes it point to make you feel welcome.  I still have a main Dentist in SF that I can't seem to let go, so I want to slowly ease into Dr. Yung's office being my main dentist, versus just being my cleaning dentist.  Will update once I get some restorative or major work done.

Ok so an update since my last post. I had the root canal for $750, then had to come back to get the permanent filling put in which cost approx $200, then I was informed that the crown would cost $1083! Hello one freaking little porcelain tooth! Ok so now the total cost of this is $2000. That's $500 MORE than my initial offer from the first dentist I saw. I'm so not loving this anymore. I still don't have a job, or insurance so now I'm running around without a crown and looking like white trash with a half tooth. I wish he had told me exactly how much everything was going to be right from the get go :(. He's still very nice and has good bedside manners but it's just too damn expensive for me.

I was new patient at Dr. Yung's office and visited in December '09 for a check-up after 2 years of neglect. Although I consulted with Dr. Yung initially, I saw Dr. Foon most of the time for the actual replacement of fillings and new fillings. She is awesome - very friendly (I think more than Dr. Yung), talkative, thorough and proud of her work. I saw Jason for my cleaning, and he was also outwardly friendly and thorough in explaining what was going on in my mouth and demonstrating brushing and flossing techniques. The receptionists/admin staff are professional and polite.

There was no pressuring for any unnecessary stuff here either.

Too bad I had to switch to Delta Dental's DHMO plan, which they don't accept, but I had a good couple of first visits.

On a side note, I thought it was sweet that the office sent me a birthday card (consequently the first card I got, haha).

I'm writing this review because I'm really irritated by the lack of communication between their assistants.  I called a month ago to book an appointment for my bf to see Dr. Yung for a cleaning, the appointment was supposed to be tomorrow Wednesday the 23rd.  After receiving a voicemail from one of his assistants named Lisa last Friday, I called back the same day to confirm the appointment but spoke to someone else.  The next day I receive another voicemail from Lisa asking me to confirm the appointment, I didn't bother calling back because I figured she probably didn't see the confirmation I've given the other assistant.  Then this morning I see yet another missed call and voicemail from Lisa, asking to confirm the appointment.  I immediately called back and the call was picked up by someone else again, I told her that Lisa called me numerous times to confirm an appointment that I have already confirmed for tomorrow at 11am.  She tells me yes it is confirmed and everything is set.  3 hours later, I receive yet another phone call from Dr. Yung's office, I pick up and it's Lisa again, she tells me that Dr Yung won't be in the office tomorrow because he has called in sick.  I was confused.  Why didn't his other assistant tell me this morning?  I didn't even want to bother complaining because I was busy.  So I give her my bf's phone number for her to reschedule with him, which basically defeated the purpose of me calling in the first place so he doesn't have to bother with it.  My bf calls me back and says that he was rescheduled to May 14. MAY?!  R u serious?!  As friendly as doctor Yung and his staff are, this isn't acceptable.  Canceling on a patient the day before then rescheduling them 2 months later when they have already waited a month is ridiculous.

This is the best dentist I have ever been to. These are the reasons why:

    1) No Pain-They are the most conscious of any office I have been to
    2) Everyone is friendly. I got a great explanation on how the billing would work with it being my first PPO visit.
    3) The most thorough professionals- they take their time and not rush you out the door. They check things other people do not check.
    4) They educate you more than any other office.
    5) I also got some nice goodies. Oral B tooth brush and crest floss and toothpaste.

i was looking for a dentist in the pasadena area and called the office of dr. yung based on all these wonderful reviews.

i was looking for an honest dentist who was not motivated purely by profit, someone who would not pressure a patient into "deep cleaning."  my brother is a dentist and i work as a physician, and both of us have never encountered any literature stating that such a procedure makes ANY positive difference in terms of clinical outcomes in spite of THEORETICAL benefits.  however, such a procedure does puts you at risk for bacteremia and endocarditis.  oops, i forgot... there is one benefit in that it provides huge profit margins for a dentist's practice.

for the reasons mentioned, i specifically requested not to be pressured into such a procedure.  what i was told was "we do not force anyone to do a procedure they do not consent to".  however, the caveat was that if they recommend it(and they almost certainly will) and you don't do it, you will be referred to another dentist.  in the end you are being pressured because your only other option besides paying for such a procedure is to take your business elsewhere.  these words came from the mouth of dr. yung himself who i asked to speak to since the secretary was unsure.  his reasoning was that if he recommends a procedure, and i don't follow through with it, he was liable.  he stated there were cases where a "patient didn't accept a dentist's advice and later developed periodontal disease and sued the dentist."  the story itself it ridiculous and likely untrue, circumvented by a liability waiver which he REFUSED to accept, and overall a very poor excuse to coverup the true reason for forcing such a procedure on patients, which is $$$.

i will NEVER go to a dentist who pressures someone into procedures, especially when i know that the ONLY legitimate reason is more money for the dentist's practice.  i work as a physician, and if a patient presents a legitimate concern for a procedure i recommend, i NEVER force them to follow through or tell them to go see someone else.  it's ALWAYS the patient's choice, and the liability excuse is a pathetic excuse.  doctors and dentists don't get sued for patients' mistakes, they get sued for the OWN mistakes.

fyi- i cannot make comments on office, staff, skill of the dentist since i cancelled my appointment after my discussion.  i'm sure his practice rates well in all the above although i have no first-hand experience.

one last note- i would warn anyone about going to a dentist, or a physician, who benefits financially from recommending a procedure given there is inherent bias and conflict of interest.  always get a second opinion if you are uncomfortable with the recommendation. furthermore, you should never feel like you are forced into doing something you are not comfortable with.

Dr Yung is organized, orderly, and professional.  He also has very good bedside manner.  He smiles and asks how you are doing.

His cleaning staff is also extremely professional and they are VERY sensitive to how you are doing while they are cleaning your teeth.

I was most impressed however by how well Dr Yung and his staff navigate the insurance payment wilderness.  All I had to do was give them my card and voila! I never had to think about it again.  They managed all of my claims - and billed procedures (like my filling) in a manner in which we both benefited!  it was painless.

Thank you Dr Yung & co!

I've been seeing Dr. Yung for about 3 years.  I was seeing another dentist and felt I was getting overcharged for work I didn't really need.  Dr. Yung and his staff have been very friendly, they do good work, and my teeth seem to be fine.  When I first started going, Dr. Yung even did my cleanings, but I think they have been so successful, he sticks to the fillings and examinations now.  But the other staff are very good and proud of their work.  I think he was named best Pasdena dentist in Pasadena magazine in 2008.  So, the word is out.

I consistently received the highest quality care and exemplary customer service from Dr. Yung and his staff. As particular I am about the dentist, I could not have been happier with my experience there.

My experience at Dr. Yung's office was freindly and professional. I've got good hair but I didn't get good teeth so a good dentist is invaluable to me, and Dr. Yung's office fits my needs. Plus my last three dentists retired so I've opted for a dentist who is younger than  me and has the energy to keep long hours ( even Sats.) to take care of my pearly whites and hopefully yours.
