Dear Mia,
I will start by saying that I am torn between 3 and 3.5 stars... Just putting it out there. :-) You are A-OK in my book, and our group of 3 had a good experience.
We came on Friday after a little networking event nearby at the James L Knight center. It was maybe 8pm when we arrived and it was not too crowded; a few tables outside and a few inside. Seemed to be the leftover Happy Hour crowd. We walked around inside to check it out, as it was my first time there, but then chose to sit outside and enjoy the changing Miami weather. The only downside? The DJ outside was really lacking in skills and seemed to be entertaining himself way too much!
Our waitress, Gabby, was super attentive and very on point throughout the whole evening. Once we were seated, she promptly came over and introduced herself, advising she would return momentarily to take our drink orders.
When she returned, we ordered drinks and already started ordering the tapas and small plates. I was pleasantly surprised to see our food come pretty quickly each time we ordered an item. It kept us busy eating, talking and drinking, which is what the goal of any restaurant should be! Gabby checked in often to ensure we had drinks, water, and were satisfied with the food. At one point I even returned a drink (they can't make mojitos, note that now), and she had my Black on the Rocks in front of me before I could blink!
Getting on to the snacks we ordered... The croquettas with Serrano ham and Manchego cheese are AWESOME. So awesome that we ordered it again. :) We also sampled the Kobe Beef tiradito, which was perfection and sooo tasty. The thin slices of rare steak with these crunchy chips and drizzled with oil were just DIVINE!!! The ponzu sauce for dipping was delicious. We also ordered the skirt steak pinchos, which were cooked to perfection and melted like butter in our mouths. That also came with a nice garlic-y dipping sauce.
A few small plates and a couple of drinks later, we were satisfied with the meal and pleased with the experience. I will return, however I think I'll avoid the late night scene here.
Even as we were leaving, I could already tell the door guy was a total asshole. They didn't want us walking OUT the red ropes... WTF? It's a restaurant and that's the front entrance... He had a major attitude (completely undeserved) which I found repulsive.
If you want to keep up with the late night scene Mia, you're going to have to do WAY better than that. Service is key and attitudes can make or break your establishment. Put yourself in check before you end up just another failed attempt in the Miami scene.
I wish you the best! You have tons of potential, so now I guess we'll see what you do with it.
Good luck,
SabrinaAnna*
BEEN THERE, DONE THAT, AND NEVER AGAIN.
Oh Mia, Mia, Mia. You are gorgeous, but looks aren't everything. I was at Mia the week after opening night. I heard DJ BRUNO was playing (LOVE HIM!!) so decided to check it out. It was Friday, about 9:30 pm, and the place was empty... so why did the door man take FOREVER to pull back that red velvet rope for five girls and one guy... in 90 degree weather? Did I mention the place was empty? My friends and I were confused about this... so I asked Mr. Door Man if there was a problem and he finally decided to ask me if I was on a list or had a reservation. I told him we were with the DJ and he finally let us in... after 5 more long minutes. In all honesty, the door guy was acting as if this was a red carpet celebrity event but.... there was no line. no crowd. it was nowhere near packed.
I walked in and since it was empty (as previously mentioned), was able to get my EXPENSIVE drink right away. Within 2 hours, this place was packed and turned into a club. I did not like the crowd AT ALL. The majority of the people there seemed to be interested in who you know, where you bought your outfit, and what car you drive. It was not laid back enough for me.... so we people-watched and laughed as wanna-be celebrities were photographed in front of the faux one-foot-long red carpet. That got very old after 10 minutes (seeing more of the same is never fun) so we left and that was that.
If you're looking to party, go somewhere else. If you're planning on dinner, go early. I have not tried the food yet, but since I work in the downtown area, I am almost positive that my coworkers will coerce me into having lunch there someday. The patio seems like a nice place to sit and enjoy a meal, but if I see Mr. Door Man and his red velvet rope, I am running the other way.... and if Mr. Door Man is any indication of the service there, I will just eat lunch alone.
Mia at Biscayne is a super addition to the Downtown Family. I have been there several times and have not had a totally negative experience yet. Happy Hour drink specials are half price that's about 5 bucks, and strong too. The one problem i had was that the Happy hour is advertised until 9pm and the wait staff keeps telling me that it it until 8pm. The interactive wall and bar are really neat.
The food is outstanding. For lunch i called ahead to tell them i was heading over with 10 guests so they could have a space for us. When we arrived all was as hoped for we had a wonderful space for us in their beautiful dinning area. We were very well attended to by 4 members of the wait staff. All very polite, friendly and accommodating. Their new Executive Lunch specials for 15.00 bucks are what drew us in. The Monday special was Oxtail, mashed potatoes pearled onions and carrots. A baby greens salad and glass of wine was also included. The salad was fresh and tasty. The oxtails were Noah's Ark style... that's 2 by 2. but they were huge, very very tender, simply seasoned but very deli sh. The Oxtails were served on top of the potatoes that seemed to be portioned small but most of the time my eyes are bigger than my stomach, so happily i left satisfied. Also as compliments from the chef we were all served a glass of Gazpacho. What a nice treat.
Everyone should keep giving Mia a chance to show how great she is.
The atmosphere was ultra sexi and trendy! The music was amazing and the DJ delivered the best house/dance mixes. The service at Mia was great, especially the staff who were quite attentive all evening. The outside patio is comfortable and the furniture is quite tasteful. Looking for a lounge w/ Miami's hottest peeps... Check out Mia! I promise it will deliver ;)
I have been to Mia a few times and I can say that I like it very much. It is a very friendly place. The people there are very friendly and try they best to make your time more pleasant starting from the valet parking to the bar. The decor is very nice, classy and cozy. Usually it is not very crowed. However, it is a nice place to chill and relax with friends and coworkers. After a long day, Mia is the place to go to have a few drinks and enjoy yourself; and the outside seating is perfect for that. As a new opened business Mia is doing very good. Mia is now the hanging out place for my girlfriends and I.
Where Quality Food is M.I.A.:
We went for lunch. It was, quite simply, unapologetically awful. The best thing I can say is that it was inconsistent...if the rest of my party got the same food I got, we may not have made it past the appetizers. Even so, I doubt any of us will return.
First, it took 10 minutes in an empty restaurant to take our order. When our waiter came, he explained that it was "small plates" blah blah blah. But apparently he would have done better skipping that intro and just telling us what they had-- they only had 2 out of 5 or so entrees available. I ordered from the sandwich menu, and got the "hamachi" sandwich. When it arrived, all 4 oz. of it on a stale bun for $14, it smelled so bad the person next to me almost passed out. Stupidly, I tried a sliver thinking maybe it was a funky rub or marinade. Well, unless they have a garbage dashi they soak the fish in, it was rotten to the core. I sent it back, and was informed by the waiter that the chef said it was fine. At least they let me order the clearly-not-even-American-style "Kobe" sliders instead-- they didn't charge me for the fish but they charged me full freight for everything else, including the crab cakes we couldn't eat (slight yeasty rotten smell, but compared to the fish it was like a day boat selection).
Funnily enough, inconsistency saved them from complete disaster, as some of the other entrees appeared much better than mine. The chicken looked downright good, and the plate of the day, a suckling pig, was a little dry but very nice. Unfortunately, it took 20 minutes longer than the rest of the meal. Kind of weird because a daily special in a near-empty place should be the easiest to get out on time.
Service was awful, but on a positive note, very friendly. That's something considering gratuity was included. So he wasn't good, but at least we didn't get the 'tude.
It's a nice place, it won't last, so get there for a happy hour drink or a dj set and have a meal waiting for you somewhere else. Anywhere else.
I really want to love MIA...I've been here a couple of times and I love the music and atmosphere, but if you're coming here for dinner and drinks it kind of blows. I'm not really into the whole tapas thing....I don't mind sharing some of my meal with the people that I am with...but I prefer to order a whole meal to myself and get full with that instead of having tidbits of different appetizer like finger food.I've gone here with big groups and we've ordered tons of stuff and I can still never seem to walk away with a satisfied stomach. On top of the lack of fullness, it ends up costing an arm and a leg....I don't really see the value in it. Not to mention the drinks are pretty darn expensive, a glass of wine is $12...and thats about the cheapest drink there. When the restaurant converts into a nightclub they have great music playing and some of Miami's best looking people show up, but if you try and dance on the so called dance floor you have another thing coming. The dance floor is so small and so closely connected to the bar that you have no room to actually dance. MIA has alot of ambiance and a lot of things going for it, they just need to perfect some other elements and I think that they will be a party force to be reckoned with.
Ok, I have been holding off on writing this review because of how angry and disappointed I was after my first, and probably last, experience here.
After several times of starting and then stopping this review...here goes nothing.....
MIA, you BLOW!!!! You have all the potential of being a great place, but your service is WRETCHED!
Yes, the space is gorgeous. Yes, the food (once it finally gets to you) is good. For the love of God though, get you act together with your SERVICE!
I came here with about 8 of my girlfriends to celebrate my birthday a few Fridays ago. Mia had advertised itself as a Happy Hour place, but when we walked in around 7PM, there were maybe 20-25 people inside tops. You would THINK that with such an empty space and staff walking around everywhere, that someone would have come to our high top table quickly to serve us, right? NOPE! After about 30 minutes, my friend finally had to get up and go get a server...ridiculous. The guy finally took our order, and then took about another 20 minutes to bring our drinks back! WTF?! Also, I am not one for hoopla, but if other bottles of champagne are coming out with sparklers...why did ours come without??? Its my birthday...sparklers would be nice! I mention it to him and what does he do? He turns right back around and takes what felt like forever to bring the bottle back with the sparklers. Sigh. After we finally all got our drinks, the server never came back to see if we wanted seconds. We had to actually get up and get the manager and tell him how unhappy we were and then the manager is the one that got us the second round, not the server. This time we ordered 2 bottle sof champagne at once just in case we'd have to wait so long for the next one again....sad to have to think like that.
By this time we were hungry, we went to check for a larger table, and they were all "reserved." So we opted to eat at our high top. Do you think anyone hurried over to take our order? Of course not......
We ended up having to once again get the manager and he had to go hunt our server down. The guy came back with major attitude, took our order, and left. When the food finally came, it was actually really good! Too bad our experience there had to sour it all though.
At this point, we just wanted to get the hec out of there. We asked another server, because ours was nowhere to be seen, to please bring us our check. After at least another half hour of waiting, no exaggeration there, we had to ONCE AGAIN get the manager. Long story short, we let him have it. He ended up giving us our entire bill for $100 and then brought us two "complimentary" bottles of champagne with lots of sparklers to try to cheer us up. Whatever, I could care less about the damn sparklers at that point, but the bubbly did help my mood ;) LOL
Its a shame we had such a bad experience here because by 10PM the place finally started filling up with a pretty decent crowd and the music was actually good/fun. This place is more of a club/lounge and should've NEVER marketed itself as a happy hour spot.
I ended up making the most of my night and I had a good time....surely the tiny bubble in my wine helped, but will I be back anytime soon? Nope. Not worth the hassle and piss poor service in my book....
Im removing a star bc at the bar I opened up a tab (indicated I was paying cash but they insisted I had to leave a credit card and promised it would not be charged) for a vodka with soda and a diet coke. And guess what everybody? They charged me!!!!! So not only did pay $23.00 cash but they went ahead and charged $45.00 (apparentley the bartender thought his sticky fingers were worth a $22.00 tip) hmmmm. VERY TACKY!!!

Nice looking place, but still has some things to work out.
They have an amazing olive platter which will keep me coming back for more.
I wish they had more affordable drinks, or a happy hour. $18 dollar drinks? Is a little too much in my opinion. Serving me a $12 drink with too much ice in a plastic cup? Makes me think of a frat-party/south beach club kind of thing.
The mojitos are great, served in a tall glass cup like they should be and are made well depending on the bartender you come across. Although pricey, the drinks are good I have to give them that.
They have a huge amount of staff, so the service is good. They just need some more experience. They haven't been opened for a long time, so I'm sure they will get the hang of it quickly and if not, they will find people who can get the job done.
The place itself is very nice, it has an upstairs lounge/club area and everywhere you look, its high quality. The bathrooms are also nice and always clean. If you are looking for a nice place to take a date for dinner and drinks, I'd recommend Mia.
I haven't tried their food aside from the to die for olive platter.
I think with time this place will get better, the staff will be more experienced and hey they might even try to make a happy hour! With a happy hour I'd definitely make this place a regular go to spot.
If you visit Mia, order a passion fruit mojito and if you love olives, order the olive platter!! You won't be disappointed.
And let me know what you guys think!
I hated Mia. The crowd, the vibe, the bad attitude was all wrong. They're pretending to be the next "it" place but they're not. The drinks were expensive but I guess they are in most new spots in Miami. This place blows like Christie P. says.
I have been here twice and had a great time both visits. The inside is separated into two zones, the restaurant and the bar/club area, and the 3rd area is the outside lounge / bar. The first time I went we were hanging out in the bar area for a little while and spent most of the night outside lounging on the couches. Great setup and nicely layed out, with a nice touch of having a DJ outside. We ordered some sushi later as we got hungry and it was top notch! The 2nd time I went was after a heat game, also on a Friday. It was pretty busy and at first they told us it was going to be an hour, but we ended up grabbing a drink at the bar and being seated within 10 minutes when we said we were ok with sitting by the sushi bar. The ambiance outside and inside is beautiful, definitely up to par with the nice vegas / south beach / new york experience. And the sushi, MMM... we were chatting with the sushi chef who came down from Nobu in new york, well no surprise because that's my other fave sushi place, no wonder i love it. :) And they also take OpenTable reservations, which I always appreciate. Oh and best of all? The meal was probably a third of what it would cost at Nobu! Very reasonable pricing and DELISH sushi. I'll be back for sure!
The Velvet Rope Sucks! specially when it is empty as we walked inside. I should have never gone back after getting sick on the rolls but i was convinced otherwise. After having 2 drinks and paying $35 for them, i was in a mood to leave quickly and take my money elsewhere. The service and lazy bartenders at this place isn't going to last long. It will go the way of Karu&Y and other big operations that have come and gone in Miami. The Velvet Rope Sucks, i didn't mention that i had to wait 10 minutes to walk inside. Good going Mia, just lost another star on the review.
