I have some serious advice that you need before you dine here: 1. Do not go if marching bands scare you. 2. empty your bladder before you leave the house.

We were sitting down munching on the chips and salsa in this overly decorated, cozy little eatery when all of a sudden a loud boom and crash came from the far corner. Was it a car craching through, was it the high school's marching band, were we under attack? Nope! it was their version of a birthday celebration which consisted of a gigantic symbols, and assorted drums and a bunch of hootin' and hollerin'. I jumped and nearly peed in my pants and then I enjoyed all the excitement. The next time it came around I had my camera ready.

Two salsas came with the chips. I didnt really care for either of them. The mild salsa was super bland and tasted more like an Italian thing and the hot salsa was hot but lacked other flavor. For the entree we shared the parillada for two. $19.99! It is a little square grill loaded with minimal veggies, and all kinds of assorted meats; short ribs, chicken, carne asada, pork chops. The grill wasnt lit which made the whole thing loose some of its intended charm. The meat was already marinated and cooked. It came with pico de gallo, beans, and tortillas. We each had a beer and the whole thing with tip costs $37.00.

Worst place ever been to. Had a group of 15 people. They were ignoring our table the entire night. Ontop of that we had to ask multiple times for our food/drinks. Will be a while before I return. Lalos was a worse looking, but Much better place Service Wise. If you are wondering why it was so bad it is because this was reserved 2 months in advanced for rehersal dinner. Needless to say they didn't remeber any of the calls from the Bride and groom.

Okay, so 4 stars, but I have to admit that this is one of my favorite places to eat -- EVER.  It took a lot for me to withhold that one star, but it's for minor reasons that obviously don't prevent me from going back again and again.

Details that you should be aware of:

It's cozy, but not a place for you to go if you want a quiet evening out or want to engage in true conversation.  Everything echoes upstairs to the high ceilings.  If you're looking for a respite from the grueling day, you might want to consider a late dinner here, or dine downstairs.  There's really no scenic view upstairs except for the McDonald's and stripmall across the street, so you won't miss much up there.  Plus, I find the service to be better on the main floor for some reason.

Surprisingly, the salsa is the one thing out of their entire culinary offering that is inconsistent.  There are days when it's great and days when it's flavorless or watered-down.  And that disappoints me because I really love everything else I've had there.

Okay.  That said, Mi Tierra is a MUST if you're ever in the Berwyn neighborhood.  They really know their food and everything I've had has been absolute Mexican heaven.

It's not a hole-in-the-wall taco joint (although, sometimes those can be really good, too!), but it's not an over-the-top, fancy place either.  For the most part, you can kick back and feel comfortable from the cozy, tiled rooms to the friendly staff and management.  You can even learn a little Spanish, too.  ;)

Though, I've had all sorts of dishes from the regular menu, I highly recommend the special menu.  It is a one-page, double-sided menu that is brought out with the regular menu and lists a handful of dishes that can be overlooked.  DO NOT OVERLOOK THIS MENU.  This menu lists skirt steak, chicken or shrimp with a number of preparations and some crazy box dishes that I haven't tried yet because I would need 3 extra friends to help me (anyone want to join me?).

The skirt steak dishes are ALWAYS amazing.  In fact, I rarely get anything other than steak these days.  I look at the regular menu (as if I don't know what's on it) and toy with the thought of having something different, but the steak always gets me.  The first time I ordered one of these dishes, the server asked how I wanted my steak done.  "You can give a temperature on skirt steak??" was my thought.  "Medium rare, please."  Not really expecting the thin skirt to come out medium rare, I was surprised to see it just that way -- medium rare.  And each time, perfectly pink and sooooooo soft and tender.  In any preparation -- whether you like mushrooms, peppers, onions, tomato, corn, etc. -- the steak is always perfection.

If you're a seafood lover, there's plenty of heaven for you, too, from grilled, whole red snapper or tilapia to shrimp enchiladas with a creamy, green tomatillo sauce.  Oh, and the mole sauce is one of the best I've had.

So, if you can deal with minor distractions, please try the food.  I guarantee you'll be back a second time!

I knew this place would be good because they have a location in the barrio...my suspicions were spot on. The salsas they bring you when you sit down are very fresh. One is a spicier pico and one is a milder red. Chips are thick and not at all greasy. The sister and I had margaritas (the whole reason we went out was because she was in a fight with her roomies and needed to get out of the house) and they made her feel better. Only $5, big, strong, and not all syrupy. I had 2 :)

Most importantly the camarones al mojo de ajo here is amazing!! You get 7 or 8 jumbo, shell-on butterflied shrimp with the garlic sauce in the middle for dipping, all surrounded by lemon/lime/orange wedges, avocados, cold crisp lettuce...and most importantly the rice you are supposed to get with mariscos. Not that red rice but the white rice with the veggies in it. This place rivaled my La Palapa and Cocula for best camarones!

I will definitely be back when I am in my sister's hood. Highly recommended!!

Nope, my first visit wasn't a fluke...

quesadilla del mar with grilled shrimp, cheese, tomato, onion, cilantro. This came with a side of rice and some sort of interesting potato salad. Never had potato salad at a Mexican restaurant before but it was pretty good. Tons of shrimp in the quesadilla and not just bits of shrimp or shrimp flavoring.
Service here is always quick, friendly, efficient and inexpensive.

What better way on a day off than to have a lunch consisting of 3 mini-burritos stuffed with steak accompanied with rice 'n beans for $3.95?  And, it's GOOD quality non-chewy steak!  Over the past 10+ years I've been going, Mi Tierra has served up consistently excellent traditional Mexican cuisine.  Nothing super-fancy by any means, but in the 100+ times I must have been, I've never been let down.

The lunch menu rocks!  Mon-Fri 11am-4pm.  Cheap 'n good.  And, you get to watch Latino soap operas, no sound, for free!  Today, a man threatened a hospital bed-ridden man with a classical guitar, then gave the guitar to the girl who was there, and then took the man from the hospital bed into his arms an carried him off, I.V. and all.  FOX is jealous.

I wouldn't give it any stars if I could. Went with a large group last night and had horrible service. Before ordering I asked the waitress if we could have our separate bill. Her answer was  a  rude no.  Not a good sign.
I reminded her again that I wanted a separate bill for our table, she ignored me. Here's the thing, another group in our party was able to pay for their own.
    Other complaints
-We never got our drinks refilled.
-The food eh, not very exciting.
Maybe if the service was better I could forgive the mediocre food. But I can't.

I must have been there on an "off" day, because my meal was definitely not 5-stars. Neither was the experience. It was like they made no attempt to make anything with the quesadillas.

The food was extremely extremely bland and tasteless. My husband's "Azteca-Combo" was nothing of the ordinary. He ended up putting hot sauce on his meal to add a little kick. I ordered an appetizer sampler as my main course and felt like I was in a fast-food restaurant. The cheese quesadillas were tasteless and the tamales were dry.

You get 2 types of salsa - spicy and regular. The spicy was bland with just a little kick. The mild tasted very tomato-ey and needed lots of salt and pepper.

Honestly, I think I've had better Mexican food in the northern suburbs.

    They have the best salsa!!!
Not as nice as the one on Belmont, but when you're in the mood for Mexican...its great that it's close.  I always order the same thing...the Aztec Special.  I haven't been disapointed.

The one on Belmont is decorated better.

Prices are the same as any other mexican resturant.

This phenomenal restaurant closed as February 1, 2011.  City of Berwyn bought the block and forced the businesses out. The original is still open near 26th and Kedzie in Chicago.  The owner said they may open another restaurant in the Berwyn area, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. It will be missed.

No free refills was bad enough.  My taco salad came out like a taco soup.  The chairs have rubber stoppers on the legs, so it is very hard to get up and leave.  I've had much better mexican food for less money.  My family said this place was good, maybe I'll given them another shot.

This is the only restaurant that has ever made me dream (literally) about a specific food item. The first time I ate there, I got the Plato Chilazo with shrimp. Now I won't try anything else. (which sucks, because it all looks so good!) It's shrimp in a spicy/creamy/peppery sauce ladled over real mashed potatoes. Yes. Mashed potatoes. I always sit downstairs and the service is always fast and friendly. The prices are fairly low. They give you a little magnetic calendar around Christmastime, and whenever you look at it you want to go back and eat more plato chilazo. . .more plato chilazo. . .more plato chilazo. . .  OMG--they've hypnotized me!!!!!!!

The food is gross we came here for lunch and the chile rellno tasted like freezer burn and microwaved. The enchildas tasted microwaved. The kids meal chick nuggets were burnt and the fries also tasted like freezer burn. The waitress was very ignorant and not so attentive. We will not be returning are first and last time.

Really good enchiladas and quesadillas, and I love their Spanish Rice- it's very tasty compared to other bland versions at other Mexican restaurants.  They also have seafood dishes, tacos, and burritos.  I prefer the beef burrito and chips and salsa.  It's pretty cheap too- you can get a ton of food for around $10 or so.

So this place isn't my favorite but its good. I have gone there a couple times and haven't been disappointed but haven't been wowed either. The decor is nice and the service was fast. I will say I enjoyed their chips and salsa a lot. I like that they have easy parking behind the building. Everything was tasty.

Good, not great.  Has some interesting authentic special dishes on the menu, but I got fairly standard fare the few times we've been. Food is very good, service is okay - kind of a standard corner Mexican spot, but not particularly special.

Being a huge fan of the Mi Tierra located near 26th Street, I thought I'd love it here.....especially since it's so close to home. I don't know if I went on a bad day, but the food was just that....bad. And cold. I was so disappointed with my rice (my favorite usually): it was ice cold and bland. Take the trip to the 26th Street location (are the two even connected/in the same family? Now I wonder!): MUCH better food and roomier (we were squeezed into a small, uncomfortable spot here). The large group next to us go all of the attention, so I finally gave up on having my Coke refilled and seriously considered asking for a refund since the food was so bad. Unfortunately, it took forever just to get the check..

We like the grill thing, papa????(don't know how to spell it). Ask for fresh jalapenos to be put on the grill. Served with a side of frijoles, pico de gallo and fresh warm tortillas.Enough  l/o's for another meal.
Love the camarones ala chilazo, the sauce is outstanding.
The marg's are too SOUR for us.

We came here on a Friday night. We did not wait very long. The service was ok. I forgave the waiter because they were busy and seemed to be short staffed. However, the bus boy asked us how everything was---the waiter did not.  The food was also, just ok. It is a very loud restaurant and I left feeling irritable because of the noise level. I do not recommend this restaurant. The food and service are not worth it for the price.

I've been going to this place since it was known as Nanci's.  Love this place!  Family owned.  Very popular in the Mexican community.  Good food.  Great Margaritas!  There are other places with more upscale decor and more "gourmet" dishes, but they just don't feel as authentic or have this great sense of community.
