This place never closes!!!

There is a mariachi bar next door.  I the chicken enchiladas, they were OK but nothing special.  I was expecting a lot better but I guess this place is more hype for tourists than anything else.

It felt like the joes crab shack of Mexican with all the random decorations.  The service was good for how crowded it was.  The price was a bit high too.  11 bucks for a quesadilla .

Pan de huevo, pan de huevo, pan de huevo!!

Mi Tierra always has the freshest, softest, tastiest pan de huevo in the city.  If you are not familiar look for the conch shell looking things with white, pink, or brown sugars on top to symbolize vanilla, strawberry and chocolate.  I don't think they're actually flavored but they are awesome just the same.

Light, airy, soft and yummy.  Just sweet enough to accompany a good cup of Joe in the morning or afternoon.  Even if you eat elsewhere be sure to pick up some pan dulce (sweetbread) for afters.

Please, don't let my two stars deter you. If you're in the area, like non-offensive, mediocre Mexican food, but, dig a colorful, vibrant, zany atmosphere, then go! One goes for the experience, not the goodness.
It's not the worst Mexican food i've had but, it's not the best either.

I ordered Menudo and it came with a few freshly made, piping hot, flour dusted, round and perfect, mouth watering, awesome flour tortillas i've had in a very long time. In truth, I'd go for those alone. The menudo was just OK. My boy had the chicken mole enchiladas and rice and beans plate. The rice was good, reminded me of the rice my great aunt used to make. (But, Tia's was the top of the heap, of course). The beans were good. Not whole and not runny, but somewhere in between. A chunky re-fry, if you will. The mole was eh. But, I'm a hard core mole judge and it takes a lot to satisfy me. Most especially restaurant mole.

There is so much to look at, so much to see, so many things happening and it's hard to image they never close. And, they've been around since the forties, i think. wow!

Now, the bakery.. good stuff! Again, not the best but, the variety is killer! I got us some treats to have as breakfast the next morning. I had a mango pan fino empanada, which was good. The crust was perfect. My only complain is that there was hardly any filling. My boy had the pumpkin empanada, which he ate it before i woke up. ;-(

In conclusion, if you're in the area, go there. why not? It's fun.

All the negative reviews come as a surprise.  I actually really liked this place.  The carnitas and steak were tasty and very well seasoned.  It may not taste exactly like the food in Mexico but sometimes that's not necessarily a bad thing.   I remember eating in Mexico as a teenager and being served popcorn instead of chips and those thick lard chips.

This place doesn't taste anywhere near as awful as Mexican food I've had places like Ohio, Puerto Rico, and Miami it doesn't taste anywhere near as awful as Mexican food I've had places like Ohio, Virginia, Puerto Rico, and Miami.

Don't waste your money on the high-grade margarita.  Medium grade actually tastes better.  Awesome bakery and great service too.  I heard this restaurant was on the Food Channel.

Two Gringo's and their child from NY may not be the best judges of good Mexican Food, but we loved this place.  We stopped in for lunch and after what seemed like an unnecessary 25 min wait (there were a ton of open tables) we were finally seated.
DW ordered the Flautas, the chicken was grilled and shredded, besides the spice of the meat there wasn't much taste to these.  The spanish rice was above average and DW liked the refried beans.  I on the other hand went with the Chicken Enchiladas with Mole sauce.  We were both surprised when our waitress explained to us that Mole sauce is made with chocolate and peanut butter.  Seems like an odd combination to have on top of Mexican food but it was sweet and Spicy.  I equated it to Mexican Nutella and General Tso's Enchilada's (they had sesame seeds on them too)  In the end the DW was mopping up the left over mole sauce on my plate with her flautas.  Let me not forget the Pina Coladas, we shared 2 Jumbo Pina's and they come in like a gallon glass (everything is bigger in Texas;-)

Oh don't forget the bakery, on the way out we picked up some Churros and a Choco Chip cookie for the baby.  I think we will be making a return visit here before we leave, possibly for some breakfast and def some more Churros.

It's apparently a classic.  An old stand by.  A place where little children grow up enchanted by brightly hued, super sweet pastries, mariachi crooners (they don't see pops grimace as he hands over a five-spot for a song), and food that is maybe less magical then their young taste buds think it is.

But it was okay.  The beans were whatevs, the rice was less than roni.  But the tender pork simmered in a cascabel sauce was flavorful.  And alas, the salsa tasted like it was made down the road in El Paso, if not New York City.

I wouldn't counsel a traveler against it, but if you have limited time, I'd use it cruising out to the Salt Lick, or getting a combination super taco over at Rolando's.

This place is over rated!!! Our stay at Crown Plaza Riverwalk hotel was a disappointment and their recommendation of Mi Tierra Cafe & Bakery was no different.  The foods at Chevy's are much more tastier than here. I expect their chips and salsa to be freshly made at the restaurant but that was not the TASTE! The chips were hard and cold and the salsa tasted like diluted ketchup (worse than the Picante salsa from the jar you buy from the supermarket).

Go to Taco Cabana instead!

If your visiting San Antonio, and have never been to this place, go. Its fun atmoshpere makes up for the mostly average food. I would not be a repeat customer (of the restuarant. the bakery is fab) except for the wonderful menudo. It beckons me back every week I've been here. Rich and flavorful, its served with lime ,diced onion and serranos. And the most softest, pillowy flour tortillas ever. Perfect anytime.

I don't know what satanic force took over my mind and convinced me to come here, even in the face of all the horrible reviews on yelp..  call it curiosity or culinary masochism. The food here is just as good as the El Patio microwave dinners at HEB while costing 10 times more and costing a trip to San Antonio no doubt. The salsa is pretty much straight from a Pace Picante jar I'm sure while the interior was done by a Mexican Santa on crack. (I have to admit I like the interior though.. very eye catching)

Also, to the greenpeace-persistent-like guitars players hounding you every 5 seconds to play for you for a tip, NO means NO you damn auditory rapists!!

Mi Tiera is a San Antonio institution and also the proverbial tourist trap. The food is good but of course the locals will tell you that it was better in their day. I have been visiting Mi Tierra for 20 years and I would say that you go here for the experience. It is located in the Market Square. I prefer going to Mi Tierra on the weekends. The Market Square has a festival atmosphere with musicians, art/crafts booths and lots of tourists. Go for lunch and soak it all in.

Some tips. There is usually a wait at peak hours. Get your name on the list and wait in the indoor or outdoor bar for your table. Try their Michelada or Margaritas. Both are good. Stay away from their Bloody Marys. They are just awful. They have great Pecan Pralines. Get a box from their bakery on the way out.

If you hare hung over after a night of partying, Mi Tierra is open 24 hours and it is a great place to get a greasy Tex-Mex breakfast.

I've been here a couple of times, and most recently it was with a bosses day celebration with the bosses and my coworkers. The place is HUGE and is one of the main places that tourists go, but it really does have great food. The guacamole is not the best in the world so I don't go out of my way to buy guacamole salad or the like, but I found this to be good Mexican food for the price. I don't mind coming here with friends, or family or out of town guests. Good prices, but more than I would really like to spend, but it makes up for it with the attentive wait staff.

We waited 45 minutes for a table for Sunday lunch and it was worth the wait. The complimentary chips and salsa were really good, if not abundant. I had the enchiladas with mole sauce and I give it a 'thumbs up'. I appreciated the complementary warm tortillas given to us with our meal (like rolls at an American establishment). Is it the greatest Mexican food available? Probably not, but it is worth it for the atmosphere and the food is pretty darn good.

If you are new to SA or visiting you just HAVE to try it here! The atmosphere is alive and rich with Mexican culture!!! This is a must have on your to-do list.

First go shopping in the surrounding famous Mexican shoppette (can't remember the name but it's part of the culture/history) Market square? you'll definately find a souveneir there!

You can expect to wait at least twenty minutes though because it's a very desired place to eat!!! The food is amazing! You won't be dissapointed! Oh and the Mariachis don't sing for free so ask before making any requests. But it seems like they are always playing anyway so you'll enjoy live music!

This is a really great place to pass time, have a few drinks, have lot of fun and eat great food! It's definately an experience of San Antonio culture/history much like the riverwalk, Alamo, the Spurs and Seaworld!

My wife and I were visiting from Dallas and this place was recommended by many locals there.  We get there and it's crowded (good sign) and the wait was 1hr 15min.  If the food was to be as good as we heard it'd be, that wait was definitely worth it.  So we waited.

We get in and the decor is beautiful, unique and authentic.  We then ask if there's pork, lard or any other pig extractions used to cook their beans with, and it turns out that the beans, tortillas and rice all have some sort of pig ingredients and we're immediately turned off.

The salsa is pathetic.  The enchiladas were okay, nothing special.  Their steak was pretty good though.  The waiter still brought our plates with rice and beans after we made it clear we can't have em.

Overall, it's a good experience, but strictly speaking from the food aspect, two stars.  Not going back.  Go to Casa Rio instead.

If you don't want to wait in the long restaurant line and you just want appetizers and drinks, opt for the Mariachi Bar next to the bakery case. It's livelier with Mariachis and sports showing on the many flat screen HDTVs. The decor is elegant and elaborate. The restrooms are that of a fancy 5 star hotel. If the weather permits, sit on the gated patio next to all the frivolity outside on the Mercado. There is a wide selection of beers in bottle and a few on tap, the Margaritas are huge and delicious.

Outstanding food and a wonderful atmosphere. We ate this place for lunch and because it was so good we went back for dinner.

Now I'm no expert on Mexican food as I was visiting San Antonio from NC. However, it was very tasty. So while I was a tourist, I was a very satisfied one. We had three folks at the table and we all walked away very very happy.

I'll go back here in a heartbeat.

HOLY MOLE! Mi Tierra has the best chicken enchilada with MOLE that I've ever had! The mole sauce has the perfect balance of sweetness and spice. In fact since a good mole is hard to find the nice server, I think her name was Dana, offered to bring some mole sauce for me to try before I ordered it.

She brought out a small blue cup filled to the top with mole sauce and I just went to town with the chips and mole! Forget the salsa, by the time she came back to take my order I had scarfed down the mole sauce!

The ambiance is great! Although, I was eating solo, I never felt neglected or alone, thanks to the great service, guitarist roaming around the tables and the decor - there are so many beautiful silver pinatas and metallic flags to look at.

I was too moled out for the pan dulce, but when I come back I'm going to be all over it. MUY DELICIOSO!

Nice place great location but food was horrible. I agree with the other revies that the salsa is right out of a Pace picante jar and the chips were extremely oily. We had breakfast there and nothing had a flavor of its own. The beans were ok, the eggs were tasless, ham was thinner than a piece of paper. I know this is the restaurant to go to when in SA but really and moslty for people that suffer from loss of taste buds and tourists.

My absolute favorite Mexican restaurant in San Antonio. I'm so glad they're open 24-hours! That's a big plus for any college kid who cares to venture out at 1 a.m. looking for delicious food in a nice, friendly atmosphere.

I always order the enchiladas when I come here. Although I've recently become a vegetarian, I can vouch for the meat enchiladas as well. Whether it be the mole, green, Swizas -- all the sauces are delicious. Since I've gone the no-meat route, the waitresses are always happy to substitute meat for cheese or veggies to cater to their customers.

The huge selection of pan Mexicano and sweets is to die for. My favorites are the clusters (any of the nuts -- Macadamia, pecan, peanut). The hot chocolate has that homemade quality, and is rich and chocolaty.

The decor is to the nines, especially around Christmas time when they bust out the beautifully lit and decorated trees to hang on the ceilings. Lights, papel picado, and vintage photos add a festive flair all year long. I  especially love the altar they've added at the entrance.

La Margarita and Pico de Gallo also belong to the same family, but Mi Tierra serves it up the best.

I love this place -- the crowds, the lights, the huge parties, the noise, the bakery, the dancing ceilings.  Si, I love it all.  Okay, it's touristy and the food is just above average, but who cares?  It is magical ....especially with a giant margarita.

If you are visiting San Antonio and dare to venture off of the Riverwalk, check out the Market and Mi Tierra's.  When I visit San Antonio, I always stop by for dinner and a snack from the bakery.

note:  Several years ago, I gave a party for a large group at their sister restaurant next door.  Since I live out of town, all of the arrangements were made over the phone.  Everything was above and beyond our expectations -- the quality and quantity of the buffet, the room and the service.

Initially I was upset that I had to wait in line just to get into the bar. But then I was thankful that they were monitoring the capacity so closely. If they just let everyone in, it would have been horribly uncomfortable even with SRO.

Delicious Mojitos! Good job! I know that is annoying to make when you are really busy so I appreciate a well made mojito under pressure.

Mi Tierra is a San Antonio institution. I've been eating at this place for 30 years and little has changed: still long-ass waits and gaudy Xmas decor -- allegedly always up due to the fact that they never close and thus don't have the time to change them out. The food is delicious. I don't know if it's necessarily worth more than a 45 minute wait, but no one I've been with has ever been disappointed. Their chips and salsa suck -- not a good sign -- but their borracho beans rule. I always order a simple plate of cheese enchiladas and munch off my companions' dishes (is that rude?). I like the fact that the tortillas around the cheese enchiladas are orange. There are mariachis roving around and the servers are more than amiable. If you're doing the tourist thing in SA, ya gotta go.

We visited Mi Tierra on a Saturday around 1:00, and the place was packed!  Our service was horrible because the restaurant was so crowded.  We sat at our table for about 10 minutes before we were even approached by a waitress then we had to wait again for drinks, for appetizers, etc...and even had to stare at our entrees for about 5 minutes before we finally received our silverware (after I got up from the table to grab another waiter).  Even though the service was horrible, I gave four stars because the food and drinks were just so darn good!

The chips and salsa are excellent, and the tortillas were some of the best we have had in a restaurant.  The combo platters are a lot of food and worth the price ($12-14).  The only thing we didn't like was the queso flameado (our appetizer).

Better than the food...is the drinks!  We ordered frozen margaritas and daquiris and loved them.  They were the best either of us have had a long while.  We loved them so much that we stopped in to the bar later that night for more!

Make sure to stop by the bakery in the waiting area.  I recommend the pralines.

I've been to this location at a non-peak time, and the service was great.  Avoid the mess that we had by dining at non-peak times!

The atmosphere is fun, though, and the wait staff is very friendly.

So, even though I only live an hour or so away in Austin. It's so hard to find Tex-Mex places with homemade tortillas like in San Antonio. When we stayed in S.A. this weekend we woke up on Sunday wanting breakfast tacos. Unfortunately Blanco Cafe is closed on Sunday's downtown :( So we walked over to market square instead.

The food was okay but the tortillas were HOMEMADE!!! I had the chilaquiles and they were good but mostly chips and cheese. There was really no egg in there but it's alright I just stuck the cheese and chips in the tortillas. YUM!  My b.f. had the chorizo, I didn't take a bite but he ate it all. So I'm pretty sure he enjoyed it. Also, I added an extra star for the waiter. He was really personable and on the ball. I wish I would've gotten his name. He was excellent.

This was a very pleasant experience. The whole marketplace gave the feel of an authentic mexican environment. This made me excited, because I can only have so much of too much texas themed businesses. They had  a mariachi, and bakery, and even carts that sold miscellaneous things.

You could immediately tell that this was a good place to be, since there were a lot of people waiting to be seated. The wait was 1.5 hour! Okay fine I'll just go to the bar! I watch the bartender poor the liquor and oh man was it good! Awesome ratio! My friends and I found patio chairs and just drank while we waited. They don't serve any meals in the bar area but they do serve appetizers. We ordered a bunch!
We were finally seated and it was nothing less than perfect food. I devoured mine.

If you are in the San Antonio area, this is definately a place to stop by and  enjoy your time here. Just expect a long wait.

Found Mi Tierra after talking to some locals.... and they did not disappoint!  The venue showcases a family business owned since 1941.  It has a lot of character and heart...and you can taste it in their baked goods!  I only went to the panderia (bakery section) before I had to run to a meeting...next time I will definitely try a meal!

I bought most of the baked good selections for associates to try (I really recommend the Mexican hot chocolate with whip cream).

Disclaimer:  I tend to like pasteries *REALLY* sweet (more on the french style) - so if this is your first time trying Mexican pasteries be forewarned they look sweet with the colored sugar and decor but they aren't (to me anyway).

A short review:

I really like this place. It is crazy and touristy at times but I cannot deny I have never been to another Mi Tierra.

Great service. A very patient lady.

You have to get something from the bakery. Don't forget to get a number in the middle of the counter. It is that busy!

Read the other reviews.. it's all true.

Suggestion:
1. Avoid peak hours.
2. Best enjoyed off season. Went here over Christmas and it was way better than in June.

It is like being in Mexico except you can eat everything and drink the water. It is also like Mexico because it can be hit or miss.

The margaritas were only so-so but they were relatively cheap. My goat was very good but my wife's steak was basically raw and loaded with fat.
The room with all of the hanging paper "flags" and mirrors is lots of fun, reminds me of Versailles, a Cuban Restaurant in Miami loaded with mirrors, of course.

The best part is skipping dessert at the table and going to the counter and trying something that you would never think of ordering, like the strange shaped lump the color of antifreeze that tastes sort of like a Mounds bar.

It would get 2 stars, but I really like the wall paintings. The art inside is phenomenal.

However the Mariachi bands are relentless and ask you to play songs every 5 minutes so you can barely enjoy your meal. The food is mediocre at best.

The bakery is yummy though. If you want to get some good grub and avoid the touristy crowd, go there.

What a colorful restaurant!  I thought I was in Mexico for a bit.  The decor is amazing and everything adds to the burst of color.

The food was great.  I had steak and it was juicy!!!!  There are mariachi bands that you can pay for a small price to get a song or two.  A nice way to start a meal.

Tacos were yummy as well.  The tortillas were oh-so-fresh!!!

Every time my family and I go to San Antonio we make it a point to go to Mi Tierra. I have been going there since I was a baby. It can get very busy and crowded but its for a good reason and the wait is worth it. Also, at the front waiting area you buy pan dulce. They have a very good variety. The inside of this restaurant is lined with hundreds of string lights and colorful decorations. The walls are painted with murals. Not one wall is bare. The have mariachis singing throughout the restaurant as well. It's quite authentic and has made its name in San Antonio.

This is a must. You won't be able to leave without buying a box of pan dulce.
