Arriaba, Arrriaba! Sometimes I like being a tourist in my own town. Mostly always I make sure to hit up Mi Tierra when I'm hungry and am in the area.
Not only is the service great, they won't mind giving you a Spanish lesson or tourist tips. Yes, sometimes I pretend to be an out of towner just to hear local tips. Regardless, I enjoy the bakery, the bonitas and margaritas.
I'm not one to ever, and I repeat EVER dine Mi Tierras during Fiesta, weekend evenings or any time after 5 pm. I am not a true tourist but if you are, please, PLEASE dine at another time so you can truly enjoy the atmosphere, food and prime service.
THIS is a San Antonio gem. -

Dripping Springs, TX
We went to Mi Tierra on Saturday 01/14/12. First off the place was packed, and after a mile walk from the riverwalk, we just wanted to sit and eat. The wait for a table for us wasn't bad because we asked for the quickest seating and there was only two of us. We waited about 30 seconds, we were seated, they took our drink order and that part was great....
After that, We received our Mexican Martina, which by the way was only ONE glass, nothing else, and it was almost $11. . . it was mediocre. I have definitely had better. I could barely taste any alcohol in it. We decided not to order food because we were going to eat somewhere else. We proceeded to order a bowl of "chile con queso" which was thick, and not fully melted, and had no spice whatsoever! Needless to say, I could make it better at home. We mixed the salsa with it, and it tasted a little better. We also at this time ordered a JUMBO peach Margarita. It was too icy, had no alcohol, and didn't taste like Peach, AT ALL!
Our experience was not that great, the wait was great, the drinks were bad, and the queso was gross. All in all, we left unsatisfied. We did not try the bakery so I can't rate that, but after having two drinks, one in which was a jumbo, I was COMPLETELY sober. For the price, I would think they would be MUCH better. You are paying for more of the environment than the quality of the food and drinks.
We ate at the Alamo Cafe on San Pedro Avenue and I would much rather recommend there, than here. Better food, and prices. -

Vastly underwhelming. Extremely nice service, but that alone wont fill you up.
I have been here once before and enjoyed it, but either their quality or my taste has changed (probably my taste for quality). Something fun to do once, but not twice. -

Excellent tortillias. The ambience is catered to the tourist. So therefore your will be paying more for a plate. I had the Beef enchilada plate. If you go on the outskirts of town to a hole in the wall you will be paying half of what you pay here for the same food. This establishment has allot of history to it as well. Very colorful and cheerful. There is a bar and a bakery to order Sweet breads. The cool thing about this place is the Mariachis roaming around and playing songs at your table. They do not take phone reservations and you wont be seated until you entie party has arrived. Service is great.

I just love Mi Tierra. I know that it is a tourist destination, but for good reason. The food is good and dependable, the staff is friendly and authentic and the atmosphere is so uniquely and wonderfully Mexican, you just leave with a good feeling. I also love the bakery!! While good at any time of day or week, breakfast is not crowded at all on week days and really excellent.

Mi Tierra is a legendary San Antonio Mexican Restaurant that is a great stop for anyone that has guests from out of town. Surprisingly fast seating for large parties!

I came to Mi Tierra during my short visit to San Antonio because some people recommended it at the conference I attended. The venue is huge, but very packed. Hence, the ~14 out of town party that I was a part of decided to wait, thinking the food was going to be amazing. The margaritas are great, definitely get the largest size because it's more bang for the buck.
The food.. was meh. but i did enjoy the FREE chips, salsa, AND guacamole. That was pretty awesome.
My friend and I shared an enchilada - the most famous and most ordered enchilada that Mi Tierra boasts about. I didn't like the sauce on top because it was too sweet for my taste. Maybe my California blood is more used to traditional enchilada sauce? -

It was a toss up between this place and La Margarita, I heard they're both good, but one has better margaritas and fajitas. I landed here by default because Beat Box Betty (my navigation system).
I ordered Georges Special: Beef taco, cheese enchilada, guacamole, beans, rice, and piping hot flour tortillas. Coming from San Diego, I was skeptical about eating Mexican food in Texas, however, everything was delicious.
Service was phenomenal. I'm sure part of this was due to my handsome server Delmar. Went out of his way to tell me inspiring story of Mr. Pedro Cortez, who founded Mi Tierra in 1940 with $150.00. This 600 plus restaurant and bakery maintains an entire operation just beneath the restaurant itself. I'm told there us a bakery, etc. At the end of my dining experience Delmar took me for a special tour around the restaurant, specifically toward the back where an awe inspiring collage that captures the likes of Mr Cortez and family, Carlos Santana, James Almos, the former mayor of San Antonio, The founders of the first Spanish television station Univision, Selene, Bill Clinton...and Eva Langoria, who mind you is wearing the HELL out of that red dress.
I loved everything about Mi Tierra. It was definitely the best dining experience during my seven day visit to San Antonio.
You must make thus one of your stops while in San Antonio. -

For atmosphere, this place is great. If you're looking for really good Mexican/Tex Mex, keep looking. The food was bland and not worth the price you pay for eating downtown.

Been here twice and both times we had to wait for at least 15 minutes before seated. The food is good but not anything spectacular. I had the beef tips and that was good but it was around 12 for the lunch portion. The tortillas were definitely the highlight for me. Otherwise this place is very touristy, hence the long wait.

I went with a large group (about 30) and they accomodated us all farely quickly. Drinks and chips and salsa were served right away. I never had to ask for a refill as they came very quickly.
Pros:
-Fun atmosphere
-Nacho cheese appetizer was yummy
-quick and friendly service
-Fun to walk around shops on Produce Row after you eat
-Homemade flour tortillas were good
Cons:
-Had the gorditas (I think that is what they were called). Didn't dig em
-Beans were salty (and I really like salt)
-Rice was just so-so
-My daughter ordered a quesadilla with carne asada...it was just OK.
-My hubby had a dish with a tamale, enchilada and a taco. Not bad but not that good either.
I listed the things that were "just OK" as a con because I would not want to order them again. I mean they were edible and all..but just that...edible. I first had given them 3 stars but in reality I would not really want to go again. =( -

I've been to Mi Tierra countless times since moving to SATX in March. My husband loves this place, but it's not my favorite. The food is just okay, nothing out of the ordinary. I do adore their rice, though. It is SO GOOD. The margaritas are really good, too! The decor is really festive & fun, and ultimately, that's what brings us back again and again. We love the atmosphere! It's very busy most of the time, but even in a huge party of 9 at dinner time on a Saturday, we were seated right away. No review of the bakery for me, though, because I've never gotten anything from it.

Is it the best mexican food in town? No. Is it a place to take a date? No. Is it a good place to have a frozen/on the rocks margarita that with make you question its effect on the color of blood after a few.... YES YES and YES!
So share some fajitas -drink up and make fun for the people who proudly sport fanny packs. (repeat if desired) -
Review from Sarah S.
I feel like rather than just a restaurant, Mi Tierra is really one of those places where you go just for the experience.
For a restaurant located in San Antonio, the food sure does not compare to some of the other restaurants nearby, and is much more expensive at that.
Visit Mi Tierra for fun at 2am or grab some pan dulce from the bakery, but if you want top-notch San Antonio Mexican food, you won't find it here. -
Review from Cherie O.
What can I say that hasn't been said already? Open 24/7, Mi Tierra is glitzy gaudy, super loud, and over-the-top welcoming. Think your sweet next-door abuela who always has a treat for you meets Vegas showgirl with enough sequins to light the Strip. That's Mi Tierra.
Mi Tierra is divided up into several sections: the eating area, the bakery, and the bar. It's a bit confusing when you enter on where to go, and it's even more confusing by the security guard/pretend bouncer at the door. I actually wandered around the entire restaurant trying to find the hostess podium, and I really couldn't, but instead passed by a counter where someone was selling Mi Tierra souvenirs and many, many tables, all of which were stuffed with people stuffing themselves. Waitresses bustled by me, and they were intent on their job, so I felt bad about interrupting. Instead, I bothered the security guard, and he seemed happy to direct me to the correct area (it's toward the street entrance by the baked goods). Even though the place was filled, the hostess found a table for me fairly quickly, and my waitress materialized shortly after. She was awesome. I was dining alone, but you wouldn't have realized that with the service I received. Despite the hectic pace and craziness, I was never rushed or pressured. She took her time to recommend several dishes to me and also had great followup.
I ended up ordering the Michoacan, which was baked pork tips marinated in oranges and spices, along with guacamole, Spanish rice, and refried beans. I'm totally used to Americanized Mexican food, so my palate is a little uncultured. So other people's reviews say that the food is mediocre, but I really liked the food and the tastes. The pork tips were a little dry, but the guacamole was spot on and the refried beans were actually pretty tasty. Their salsa and chips are pretty good too.
I ended up getting dessert to go from the bakery, which is full of delectable treats, each more colorful than the last. I have no idea which ones I had because I simply picked the ones that looked pretty to me. They were a bit more on the expensive side, but hey, it's a vacation, and dessert is nothing to be skimped on. Since they were super busy, I didn't bother asking them which was what, but on their website, they have a great pictorial dictionary! -

We went for the breakfast while staying in SA for the holidays. We've had breakfast all over the place on the way there too, and so I wasn't expecting much. How good can a Mexican style breakfast be?
Fruit salad that wash fresh and not from a can! 4/5
Carne asada tacos with roasted salsa and soft toritlla. Meat was soft and the salsa was on the money. 7/5 (Yes, 7.)
Pancakes 5/5 (way better than IHOP and WH)
Breakfast egg burrito (2.5 without salsa, 3.5/5 with)
Bacon - thick, overcooked for my taste 1/5
Eggs rancheros 2.5/5 (Breakfast potatoes 2/5, Refired beans 3/5, fake butter 0/5, rest was OK)
Sweet baked Apple, pumpkin, and guava turnover things. 5/5
Waitress with the same sweet consistency as the apple pie... 5/5
Good stuff for the price and for a mexican american breakfast goes beyond that. -
Review from Luke W.
When I eat Mexican in Texas I don't want to hear the staff speaking in English by default. I want to hear Spanish as the dominant language and I like to feel as if I am the outsider trying to sneak my way into their culture for a bit of authentic fare.
Well, this place might as well be Taco Cabana, with a flashy decor.
Okay, maybe not that bad, but, the menu is over simplified, caters to Americans (not Texans, or Mexicans).
They do have a nice bakery with tons of Mexican baked goodies which was nice.
But I would rather go somewhere smaller, with better parking, cheaper prices and more flavor. -

This placed is located in the market place area of San Antonio, TX in a small parking lot. The place is always full so prepare to have a loud enviornment with your meal. The service was average being seated within forty five minutes for this place is average according to locals. After being seated, the hosts took the drink orders and the server came with chips and salsa. The salsa was not hot at all, more salty from my normal California salsa I eat. The menu was not so great. Selections were poor, nothing stood out, but the prices were reasonable. Prices range from $7-$19 a meal. I had me some beef tacos. Must I say, they were not tasting at all, really bland and was not worth the price. However, I was hungry and the customer service was good. The server constantly came to the table to check on the table status.
I say go elsewhere, it's no big deal. -

I'm not sure why other reviewers call this place Tex-Mex. Cabrito, mole, and other offerings are authentic Mexican cuisine. Maybe they are looking for and find Tex-Mex. I'm looking for south-of-the-border eats. They abound here. First ate here in 1988 and then had a short "break" until 2005. We eat here at least annually or when visitors come. Yes, it's busy. Yes, you have to wait. But this place is on the international map--a landmark spot. You must eat at Mi Tierra when in San Antonio. Order something you've never heard of and avoid that nasty Tex-Mex stuff on the menu (if there is any). Two thumbs up!

Was not very impressed with our meal at all. The food here is not really good and the home made corn tortillas are not very good either. Yes this place is very festive and draws huge crowds and it's in a great location. BUT I would not be going back anytime soon.

The GF always wanted to try this place when we visited San Antonio but didn't get a chance to try it until the last day of our stay. Interior decor was very nice and had a nice family theme to it. I also thought it was funny that there were some X-mas decor on the ceiling and it was mid-July but it was no big deal. I got the Breakfast eggs that came with these nice sauteed potatoes and soft tortilla shell. Rolled them up and they made a great breakfast wrap. I have never tried eggs that way but I must admit that I liked it a lot and would definitely do it again without hesitation. The price was very affordable (10$ per person; including drinks) especially when compared to the prices they were charging on the Riverwalk. The quality of food was almost unmatched by any Mexican Restaurant that I have at home. Lastly, the restaurant supposedly opens 24/7 but if you get a chance to go here for breakfast, get the fresh squeezed OJ, it will not disappoint.

Had a mini family reunion at Mi Tierra last night. The place was packed. The food tasted ok, but is way over priced. The server was very busy and I had to remind him to bring utensils, napkins and the tortillas. The ambience is great. We might try going back one night during the weekday, less people.

I can not remember a time before I used to not go to Mi Terra. Every time that I find myself downtown in the mood to live life and hungry I know that I undoubtedly want to stop by this place! They are use to large crowds of tourists mixed with graduation parties and large groups so the service is exceptionally fast! They will seat you and have your food out to you in no time at all!!
The atmosphere is great that is without a doubt. The historic pictures on the wall make it a classic, the colorful pinatas on the ceiling attract you in and then the murals well those just are like icing on the cake! There is so much Mexican culture all over this place it is ridiculous! Everywhere you look is just full of the best things about the culture! It is a wonderful dinning experience and not on the to expensive pricey end either!
The food here is good not to bad at all and they give you large portions! the BAKERY IS AMAZING!! The complimentary chips and salsa that they bring you at your table are delicious! They are always fresh and they always are willing to give you more if needed! the waiting staff is wonderful and they will make great suggestions if you are uncertain about Mexican American Cuisine! Also it is a good place to go on a fun date! If you are in need of a song or want to make it romantic trust me there are always live mariachi players there who will play a song at your request. Even if you do not know a song just tell them you want a song and they will choose a great choice without a doubt!
So if you are ever downtown and feeling hungry you better stop by at this place! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!!1 Previous Review: Show all »

The food's fine - nothing special - pretty much what you can find in about any Mexican restaurant. I give it a 3-star rating because of the festive atmosphere and bakery counter. Otherwise, I'm not sure what all the fuss is about.

Imagine if there was a Mexican Restaurant themed casino in Las Vegas. That would be Mi Tierra.
The décor is way over the top - as if they crammed Fiesta, Cinco de Mayo and a quinceanera all under one roof. Mariachis line up in the lobby ready to go out and do some La Bamba. The bakery has enough Mexican sugar to rot out your teeth by just looking at it. The Margaritas are comically oversized.
Everything on the menu is serviceable, but really overpriced. Every time I'm here I think about how much better and cheaper I can get the same thing out in the city instead of here. But hey it's for the tourists and not the locals.
As others have noted, the service is lackluster but perfunctory. Don't expect a lot of attention - you may not even see a waiter between drinks, ordering and delivery.
But you still have a good time, and that's kind of the point. Yeah, it's not the best and over the top but your guests will remember it forever. -
Review from Jesus G.
Opposed to many reviews, I believe service is good considering the droves of people here. Our server was tableside within the initial 60 seconds with water. Chips and salsa followed and two oversized margaritas. My wife had the traditional which is nothing special just lots of tequila. I had their Award winning Margarita with a special Ambhar gold tequila they had which brought the price of the Jumbo from regular $15 to $10. Great deal and a change up with the orange juice adding a sweetness to the margarita which made it very drinkable I had three.
Food was not as good and overpriced. I enjoyed the gorditas, tacos de tripas & aguas frescas at the Market Square a lot more. The Poblano dinner with a stuffed chile poblano was not very good. Tasted like it had been premade up to the battering then just reheated and topped with cheese and placed under a salamander to melt. The guacamole, beans and rice were good, though. My wife had the tamales which were okay topped with a chile con carne.
Definitely a tourist spot and although I am a tourist here, I'm not going to be suckered into bad food. I'll be back for their margaritas but that's it. More authentic food outside the doors. -

A native of El Paso, I've come to San Antonio dozens of times over the years, but was successful until this trip avoiding Mi Tierra. We typically don't stay downtown, but I had a business meeting at a large hotel, so this trip was the exception. Before heading to the airport for our return, we had to kill a few hours so we hopped the trolley and headed to Mi Tierra. We'd heard over the years it is a San Antonio institution.
What a disappointment. It's a huge caricature of Mexico with the wait staff dressed in costume and the "Poncho's Mexican Buffet" decor. The menu is not traditional--just dated, and the preparation just horrible. My wife ordered chicken fajitas and when they arrived, she had to ask if they were fajitas--didn't even resemble fajitas.
The enchiladas are covered with a substance they refer to as "gravy" and in fact, it resembles and tastes like a brownish-reddish gravy. This food would not pass for Mexican food in El Paso. I ordered heuvos con chorizo, a classic Mexican breakfast dish that is supposed to be scrambled eggs with Mexican sausage. What came out was a greasy mess that oozed reddish liquid fat--and if there were any eggs at all in the dish, they were so overpowered with fatty, red liquid grease, they were simply inedible.
On a somewhat more positive note, the tortillas were plentiful, warm, and home-made. Definitely the highlight of the meal. I really liked the fact that the roving Mariachis asked permission before breaking into song. We politely refused. The Mexican pastries and baked goods looked fresh, but we didn't partake.
Overall, I could not recommend this place to tourists, locals, or anyone. Just too old-fashioned--worn out, old recipes. -

The three stars is for all the christmas decorations, great place to take family pictures. I've also hear during the non Xmas holidays the have tons of pinatas on the ceiling. The have a ginormous bakery. I would have gotten a couple pastries but the food was mediocre. The food sucks. But their corn tortillas are good.

We've gone for bfast, lunch & dinner...sometimes all the same day! It's that good. It's all good, authentic and the best happiest fiesta atmosphere you'll ever find in a restaurant. The prices are great for the amount of food you get. Breakfast all day!
Service can be hit or miss depending on how busy or not. It seems service is better when it's busy, maybe we just don't notice, cuz we're so busy people watching! The Mariachis are excellent. There are usually a few trios wandering around.
Parking can be a hassle, they have some limited free behind the restaurant, some ramp parking, some pay street parking. It was unreasonably hot when we were in San Antonio and nothing was very busy, we could park in the lot every time (very fortunate!)
If it is 115F when you go, Mi Tierra is Air Conditioned! -

We've been here multiple times before. It's 24 hours which is good for those late night Mexican cravings. But during the day and weekend, it's so hard to get a table. It's crazy. We normally end up at the Mariachi Bar next door.
This last time, we just ordered from the bakery which was a mad house. But the baked goods are nice and fresh. Also pretty inexpensive. -

I love this place. Came here for my rehersal dinner back in '09 and just went back this past week.
Everytime I have been here the food has come out hot and full of flavor. Also, the service has been impeccable and the drinks have been strong! Their pan dulce is delicious but a bit pricey compaired to neighboring panaderias. -
Review from Shawn C.
Went here for the first time this morning for breakfast because we saw their sign saying open 24hours. They do have a very small parking lot and if you plan on eating here you should plan on parking somewhere else. The restaurant's seating capacity far out numbers the 30 or so parking spots they have. Luckily we stay at the La Quinta Inn across the street from the restaurant.
The entrance leads you straight into the bakery section with cases filled with delightful treats.
We were seated within a few moments, but we arrived just as they were opening their 3rd dining room about 8:30. Within the next 20 min all the dining rooms were full.
Our waitress was awesome (not to mention gorgeous), fast and efficient, and most important friendly. After taking our drink order she asked if we would like to try a sweetbread to go with our tea/coffee. Since it is obvious we are not of Hispanic descent, she started out to offer us cream filled pastries, but we told her we don't like fillings. We let her pick from the remainder of breads, telling her to pick one she likes (she smiled at that, probably not many customers let the waitress pick the food). She brought us a wonderful egg-bread (Pan D'Huevo). It was light with a slight eggy flavor and just a hint of sweetness, the bread went well with my coffee and my wife's tea.
My wife and I had the huevo rancheros, mine with bacon, and hers with pork barbeque, both with Mexican style potatoes and refried beans, served with fresh hot tortillas (corn & flour). May I emphasize the tortillas were freshly made, soft, and hot, they were not from a supermarket bag.
The ambiance was fantastic, bright colorful Mexican style decor with murals of famous and influential people of Hispanic descent on one wall. There was live acoustic guitar music which just added to the entire atmosphere.
We were not rushed through, but allowed to enjoy our meal at our pace and then sit back and enjoy sipping our coffee and tea while looking and listening to everything that was occurring around us.
Something I learned today was that this was a family run restaurant and they they owned three of them. I have been going La Margareta for several years every time I visited. This family has mastered the art of presentation and making your dining experience special. -

This place was absolutely crazypants. Lights wrapped around just about everything in the dining room. After checking in to our hotel so late at night (~10:30 PM) on a weekday, this was one of the few restaurants still open! Food was pretty average, but the margaritas were above average. Worth at least one visit!
