4 reviews for Mi Barrio
Just moved to the area and have been trying to find some decent food. This was definitely up there. Cute little place, nice mexican music and really solid standard mexican fare. I had the enchiladas with red sauce, which came with rice and beans and some salad, all of which tated fresh and were really spicy!
My friends all got tacos which I thought were really good, they are the dry soft double taco style and only come with cilantro and onions, but they give you green and red homemade salsa that is really wonderful. Also, I would recommend asking for a side of cotija cheese to sprinkle on everything.
Tacos were about $2 each, beers were $3.50. I'm really curious about the quesadillas so I'll be back for those. Definitely worth a stop if you're in Kensington.
some seriously good, seriously authentic Mexican food. It helps to know a little spanish if you go here, but even if you don't the super sweet waitresses have no problem with the point-and-smile method of ordering. I tried the most amazing burrito here, the carne enchilada, and it may be the best burrito I've ever had. The tacos are big and delicious, two will leave you feeling pleasantly full, and I agree that the grilled green onions they come with are a nice addition. Also worthy to note that they are open for breakfast and it's every bit as good as dinner. Menu items hover around the $9-12 range.
Mi Barrio is good and fairly satisfying. The food is on the level of....since I'm in the neighborhood rather than taking the subway from Manhattan for 25 mins to get there. I sat at the counter (with a perfect foot rest underneath) ordered a Modelo from the nice Mexican woman and one pork, chicken, and beef taco. I'm allowed to have a beer at lunch during the work week, right? All three tacos were prepared on a flat grill and served with cilantro, onion, on two corn tortillas with verde (green) salsa and limes on the side.
First, the pork taco. First I noticed the chunks of warm fat along side the pork in the taco. Don't say "gross" what the hell do you think makes bacon taste so good? The pork was crispy, the fat was flavorful, but I did chew on a few pieces too long, and the overall meat/salsa/tortilla ratio was a bit off. Needs more salsa or seasoning. Good taco.
Next the Beef taco. Salty, beefy, and orange.....tasty. This taco did make my beer taste amazing.
The chicken taco was last. Kinda bland. Something is missing from all of these tacos, and the bland chicken taco proved it.
A really nice touch was the grilled scallions that accompanied the tacos. Sweet and crisp at the ends. Really good.
Solid 3 star taco joint.
I have been ordering from and eating at Mi Barrio for about a year now. Their food is consistently wonderful. The tacos do fine, but try the Camarones al a Diabla! A perfect blend of spice and flavor. And their tamales! To die for. This food is definitely authentic and perfectly priced. Ordering by phone usually requires breakin' out the Spanish, so stop by and enjoy a Modelo and their attentive service. :)
