I only had delivery from Mezcals so I cannot attest to the actual restaurant.

I think the food is very good.  I have ordered the chicken flautas and think that they are good, above average, but not excellent.  The dishes are pricey however I did get guac, sour cream, salsa along with beans/cheese and rice as well as a bag of chips and sauce.

I've ordered from them several times and they are great on the phone, very nice, and get the delivery to you quickly.  Quick delivery of good food says a lot for Carroll Gardens, to be honest.

I'd recommend it if you want to have a good size meal of some nice mexican food.  Not eat out of bag, taco-y stuff.

If you find yourself considering this restaurant, it might be time to reconsider that weird frozen stuff in the back of your freezer.

Some background -- we're California transplants on the hunt for great Mexican food in NY, and to a certain extent, we've decided to take Yelp reviews with a grain of salt. We've discovered a few good places with less than stellar reviews. When a place is described as "bland," we give it the benefit of the doubt that the reviewer has become accustomed to artificially flavorful Tex-Mex that plagues this coast. So we didn't heed the warnings of other reviewers before we ordered takeout from Mezcal's.

    Big mistake. Huge.

When I said "burrito" they apparently heard "chile relleno" because that's what I found when I got home. Similarly, our requests to 86 the sour cream and lettuce were also ignored.

The chile was cooked decently enough, but its cheese was less jack, more white velveeta. The breading was either non-existant or had been completely dissolved into the red sauce. The rice was watery and had a distinct "boil-a-bag" taste. The refried beans were equal parts grease and water, and we're pretty much flavorless aside from the turn-your-stomach red sauce they were mixed with. Our combo plate (burrito, enchilada, tostada) just served up the same slop in stale tortillas.

Avoid at all costs. Hopefully stuffing my mouth with Halloween candy will get rid of the residual nastiness of my dinner.

Don't you hate it when you go to a restaurant with low expectations and you're *still* underwhelmed?  Actually, I wish I was just underwhelmed with Mezcal's.  I was affirmatively pissed off about the bland, tasteless -- pointless, really -- so-called "food" they serve at this slophouse.  The earlier reviewer who said Mezcal's served "overpriced shitty Mexican food" was all too kind to this restaurant.

The family and I were having a nice stroll down Court street when we decided we'd like something spicy for dinner.  We had not had Mexican for a while.  We happened on Mezcal's, which we'd seen in several locations around Brooklyn, but never tried.  We figured that, since it was a chain, and aimed at Americans rather than Mexicans, it probably wasn't that great, but at least it would be tasty.  After all, they seemed to be doing well.  How bad could it be?

Yes, it was that bad.  My wife had chicken tacos.  Bland, bland, bland, bland, bland.  Just disgusting.

I had the mole poblano.  Usually this dish has a "not quite sure if I like this unusual flavor but just can't stop eating it and often start craving it out of the blue" kind of flavor.  Here, it was bland, boring, dull, pointless and just a waste of effort to chew:  a flattened chicken breast with no flavor at all, with a greasy, watery, bland, and flavorless "mole sauce" slathered all over it.  The most exciting part of this dish was trying to prevent my  2 year-old daughter from accidentally dropping her Elmo doll into the enormous plate of watery brown liquid that Mezcal's represents on the menu to be "mole sauce."

On top of it all, Mezcal's is expensive for Mexican food, at least in Brooklyn.

All in all, I was just offended by the fact that I was put to the effort of having to consume and digest that "food."

The place was packed, which I could not figure out at first.  Then I drank my margarita.  This was actually pretty good and packed an enormous punch.  The food here doesn't matter at all.  If you want to get sloshed on margaritas, and you just need some swill to sop up the alcohol, then Mezcal's is the place for you!  Come to think of it, the girl at the next table was celebrating her 21st birthday.  Obviously, she knew where to go to start off her legal drinking career with a bang.

There used to be a Mezcal's on Atlantic Avenue near Clinton Street but that closed a few months ago.  It's a pity...the food wasn't great or anything but sometimes you just enjoy the atmosphere of a quieter place.

I heard the non-vegetarian options are okay...they have a huge menu.

Anyway, they have lots of vegetarian choices but I'm going to give you the best one:  Vegetarian Fajitas.  I believe they call it Chimbombo.  They give a generous rainbow of veggies--mushrooms, broccoli, onions, cauliflower, even baby corn--brought sizzling to your table, with bubbly cheese dancing happily on top.  It's a lot of food but you can do it and you can probably do it with a pitcher of margaritas too.

I'm totally all about this place mostly because it's around the corner from my house. The wait staff are so cute and attentive, the restaurant is never crowded with too many people, they have a cute outdoor seating option that isn't mobbed. It is a little pricey if you are drinking margs. Can be up to about $65.00 for two with food and two margs. I think that's where they get their money for the rent.

The food is really great. Basic, always consistent. I've never tried their seafood and I'm not sure I would recommend that but be sure that you have at least one "ground beef" taco. Their ground beef has crack in it.

They are great for birthday parties with 8 or more!

Pros: Never crowded, great staff, reasonable, consistent
Cons: Pricey for Mexican if you drink

Somehow delivering 7 blocks away took over an hour.

The oily, texture-less chicken mole enchilada's were barely edible. The "supreme nachos" ended up being more like an inside out quesadilla...

    Overpriced shitty Mexican food.

I was impressed with the food at Mezcal's.  I've only been here once and will definitely go back!  We ate the chicken chimichangas and a dish with spicy shrimp and rice.  Both were awesome.  They're not the typical burrito and taco place.  They have some interesting dishes.  They also have a nice selection of margaritas  =)

I've been here a few times and have to say it wasn't totally memorable, though I never had a bad meal here (probably got to margaritated up), but I'm giving it four stars based on a special I got the other day. Shrimp enchiladas with mole...Holy yum!!! I agree that it's a little on the overpriced end, but the staff is really nice.

I can't give this place five stars because I'm sure it would be the margaritas talking. This place is expensive. Why is Mexican food expensive? It shouldn't be but the bill is always ridiculous even if you've had a good time in the theme-park version of Mexico. The food is average to good depending on the day but nothing exceptional. It used to be one of the only places around so I might be at Pacifico more than Mezcal these days but think both are pretty average.

3.5 stars.   Good margaritas, decent food.  I'm not in love with their salsa, so when I do takeout or delivery I always sub my own.  I love the variety of veggies in the Burritos Verduras and the Nachos el Guapo are just the ticket if you're a fan of sour cream.

Been here twice. Both times were great. Great food. It's not that overpriced and the drink I had was good. Will definitely return.

This mexican place left me slightly drunk, but otherwise unhappy. The margarita was good. The chicken soup was flavorless. The fajitas etc were somehow simultaneously underspiced - even undersalted, yet tasted like cheap chow mien. Was it soy, or msg? Chips and salsa were fine. And the yard in the back was nice. The server more or less refused to bring us our bill. I would only return for a drink.

Loveeeeeeeee itttt! This reminds me of the Mexican Restaraunts back home where I am from. Nice to feel at home. Outdoor patio is wonderful, spacious and the servers are friendly, fast and came back a good amount of times to check on us. My boyfriend love his margaritas!! We hope to move to this neighborhood so we will be back for sure and bring our friends!

nothing even to be funny about in this place.  if it weren't for the fantastic chips and salsa this place would have garnered less than one star.  the chicken was rubbery and flavorless.  the food was nearly unsalted and the sauces were like from powder-and-water mix.

i ordered a chicken dish that she said was like an enchilada but all that i got was literally a piece of "grilled" chicken on a plate with sauce on top.  so disgusting.

and don't think that this is a lone reviewer who had a bad experience; each person in my 5-top had a similarly poor dinner experience.

the place was cordial enough, the chips and salsa were very good, the negra modello was tasty on draught, but the rest of the meal was horrendous.  unless every other restaurant on court street is closed, don't go here.

An huge selection.  Great shrimp dishes.  Guacamole is a 4 out of 5 (there are very few places that rate more than a 4 in my opinion), which is still pretty damn good.  Their frozen margaritas have a nice kick.  This is a great place to pig out on yummy Mexican food.

I'm a big fan of Mexican food & food close to my apartment. This hits both. Staff is super friendly, attentive & the food is consistently tasty, of high quality and abundant. Plus, the outdoor space is fun/cute as well. In addition to good food, good service, good location, seating is rarely a problem. If all the tables are full, eating at the bar is just as good. A great neighborhood place where you can sit back & enjoy an easy, fun meal, without feeling rushed out by staff, or stared at by people waiting at the door.
