Meza is a great place to meet up with friends have a beer and a snack.
Not a lot of choices in the food category. But what they do they do fairly well. I love the ham and cheese sandwich done Panini style. And the salsa verde they provided for dipping is amazing. A great tangy foil to the rich sandwich.
A small comfortable neighborhood place to hang.
Note: Do not come here with a large group (This place is TINY and can probably only really accommodate a group of 6 or less)
Aside from that note, this place is A-OK. I wouldn't really consider it amazing, the sandwiches are pretty good and the tapas weren't bad either. However, although my friends and I each ordered one tapas and a sandwich while sharing a pitcher of sangria, we all felt like there was much to be desired. None of us left here full at all and were almost tempted to hit up Dicks afterwards, too bad we were already late to some salsa lessons at the Century Ballroom.
Honestly, nothing I ordered really sticks out in my memory.

My friends and I had sandwiches. We all looked at each other a bunch of times and marvelled at the goodness of said sandwiches. I had a Maria Elena because its the name of two of the women closest to me and Chris had one called Ibiza.
The Maria Elena was a chicken sandwich, the Ibiza a scallop sandwich. They came with aioli to dip the sandwiches into.
Just go and eat the sandwiches. The arepas are too small for what they cost but the sandwiches are totally worth it.

Super casual, cozy & delicious!
Stopped in on a Saturday evening with a couple friends & shared several tapas (favorite was the mushrooms) as well as a couple of the Bocadillos & Arepitas.
Wasn't a big fan of the Arepita...the very thin cornmeal type thing seemed pretty flavorless & hardly held up to the amazingly-hearty fillings. I guess I don't really get the concept.
The Bocadillos on the other hand (with Macrina bread) were delicious - can't wait to try more.
Wine list was reasonable (both in scope & price). Service was prompt & friendly. The dessert list was short & didn't look that exciting, so we headed around the corner for some Old Skool Frozen Custard instead.
Not a criticism, but just a note: Probably not a great place to go w/ a group of people. The tables are made to seat 2 people or you can sit at the bar...we had 4 people & put 2 small round tables next to each other. I can't imagine trying to dine with a bigger group - would be hard to talk & share - but that is just the nature of the space.
$4 HH arepas! Yay!
So I tried this place under the recommendation of Roberto, and after having seen Valentina give it a big thumbs up, I eagerly took that advice.
Simply said, I wasn't disappointed.
Great Venezuelan-esque arepas, with an original twist. The place is hip and casual, and the staff very friendly. But one warning; don't be fooled by the term, "arepitas". These are full-sized arepas, and the lovely tender meat inside is as yummy as it gets!

It's a fairly traditional sandwich served throughout South America, and this is one of the few places in Seattle to get one. So it's now added to my Latin food list. It's great to have places like this where I can get a little re-Latinized in the NW!

Ok then. I will make it a point to come back to Meza after a long night for sure!
We ordered the corncakes - one with cheese and one with chicken and I gotta tell ya - the chicken there is RIDONKULOUS. So ridiculous that we ordered just a plate of it to eat. Not kidding either.
Our server was v friendly & prompt - even though the place was full with people streaming in and out.
My only suggestion would be to add a little bit more flavour to the corncakes - while they were good, they'd be even better with a wee bit of spice in them. Otherwise, YUM!
The food was good but the service was pretty slow. There were a few vegetarian options, so I ordered all of them. My carnivorous friend received all his food while I hungrily waited and waited. One of the tapas I ordered was forgotten entirely and others arrived 45 minutes after my friend had finished eating.
To his credit, our server was really friendly and apologized and gave me a coupon to use the next time I came, so I'll give them another shot sometime when I'm less hungry.
The one thing I absolutely recommend this place for is sangria. Mmm, sangria. It was quite good sangria.
This place is a-meza-ing! Thank you Yelp for introducing me to such a great restaurant! Our whole experience from the food, to service, to even ambiance was perfect.
The menu consists of a variety of different Tapas to try as well as full sandwiches. We ordered the potato omelette, mushrooms with garlic and wine (Hongos), seared scallops, pernil arepitas & La Playera (both corncakes with tender pulled pork but the playera had avocado), and for the best two dishes..the cuban sandwiches! We got both the Ibiza (seared scallops, jalepenos and aioli) and the Havana (classic cuban wich with braised pork, onions, peppers, cheese, aioli).
Yum..I am drooling as I am reviewing this! The aioli in the Ibiza was so delicious. Creamy, spicy, and smothered over the scallops. The pork in all of the dishes was really tender and juicy-- the way pulled pork should be.
I love this restaurant and will tell everyone I know about it! It definitely deserves this much love. Go-Go-Go and try it now!
3.5 rating would be more like it. I can't say the food is as amazing as others have mentioned. But, great value, great service, great ambiance. Perfect for those rainy days where you just want to be at a mellow place .. chill, have a conversation, chat with the chef ...
I was slightly disappointed that the mushroom dish was a white button mushroom and not a crimini or something else. Scallops or Bay scallops. Generaly observation is the ingredient quality is not like other tapas bars.
La Playera was awesome. Perfect tenderness, perfect sauce and the chef was just happy to make food for people to enjoy. I heart that! :D
I'll be back for the drinks, for the service, and a perfect low key night.
I went to Meza about a month ago at about 6pm on a Friday evening. There were plenty of tables available and the service was great. I ordered two arepas: chicken and veggie. They were pretty good, not as good as Caracas in NYC. The arepas at Caracas are AMAZING. I think that Meza needs to add some type of sauce to their arepas.
Now, the reason I love arepas so much is because they are gluten free and I can almost never get a sandwich because they're always made with bread! I'll keep patronizing Meza just because there isn't another place in Seattle to get venezuelan food and it's close to my house.
I also liked how the actual restaurant space reminded me of places in NYC--small and cozy and no frills. I love it.

after a return i ordered the morrocoy, just plained pulled pork.... i would stick to the havana to get more then just meat and bread.
We came here for an early dinner Saturday night - there was only one other couple in the restaurant when we arrived.
The sangria was delicious, and the service was fab. We had the pork and cheese arepita, the galipan, and the seared scallops. All was tasty, though I would probably pass on the scallops next time. The sauce just wasn't my thing, and they were those mini scallops so you have to eat every one of them in order to not waste a little scallop life.
Whenever I crave pork and sangria near the homestead, I will come to Meza!
Paseo!!! Watch out, new guy in town! Meza is fab... for realz, come and check it out... will be worth your time. I recommend: The sammiches (Ibiza and Cuban) the bread is perfected toasted, warm and soft plus great mayo..., Mushroom/garlic tapas and these corn masa pita like sandwiches that look like clams filled with amazing tender and juicy pulled pork. Im not a huge pulled pork type gal cuz it always turns out oversauced to cover up the dryness, but here, no sauce - no need for it. Way way juicy and flavorful. Excellent service from our tall dark rimmed glassed waitor, so attentive and friendly. Yelp did it again!
Just had lunch in this little sliver of a space on Capitol Hill. I had a Venezuelan sandwich with chicken and cilantro. The unique part of this sandwich (the actual name escapes me) is the corn meal bread that it is made from. I've never had anything like it but will again very soon. The $6 price for the sando + $2 for the Mexican Coke (I always love the irony of those two words said together) was well worth it. I would ask for a little hot sauce next time but the sandwich stands on its own. They are only open for lunch on Fri and Saturday but have dinner that lasts until 3 AM according to their menu. I'll be back for sure. Next time I'm going to have either the Cuban Sandwich served on Macrina Giuseppe bread or the scallop sando with garlic aioli. The cocktails looked good too. They rotate infused Vodkas on premise.
First of all, don't listen to anything Will W writes - I don't trust anyone who writes ONE REVIEW and it happens to bash a restaurant that 90% of us liked not just bit, but A LOT. Seems like he might have an agenda..oh well....
But I digress, we ate here last night and for the location and price, it was perfect. We had the mazanitas, fruta guayaba, ibiza and the vegetariana. The manzanitas were fine, nothing too special about apples, cheese and walnuts - the fruta was delicious - soft, tender pulled pork with a great marinade. The vegetariana was good - sauteed veggies in a pita with some sort of light olive oil but the kicker had to be the ibiza - AMAZING! Wow - we got this dish 4 out of 5 in terms of spice and man was it phenomenal. Tiny, tender pieces of scallops, mushed into a small sandwich - I'm not sure how anyone could dislike this. Anyway, for the price (around $35 with 2 beers - Will, BTW, I don't know anyone who doesn't know what a Negro Modelo is - drink much?) this place can't be beat. Going back here many times....
Caracas, Venezuela - Seattle, WA:

So this is the separation I currently have with my hometown. It takes about 12 hours and two or three airplanes to travel to my beloved country.
Imagine "el guayabo latente" (lingering broken heart) I often have to deal with.
Fortunately for me, Pike Place Market and the glorious Greenwood neighborhood are home for small Latino businesses where I can find "Harina P.A.N" to make our delightful arepas.
Also, a system of support we share with other Venezuelan expatriates, whose families visit Seattle, bring us rum (look at this beautiful display of amazing rums http://bit.ly/ronvenez...), jabon azul (blue soap http://bit.ly/jabonazul), casabe (yucca-cassava http://bit.ly/casabe) and other Venezuelan items.
Still, goodies in hand, I'm 4,148 miles away from home. That is why I was jumping up and down when lovely Yelper Julie B., told me about Meza opening in...Capitol Hill!
Venezuelan inspired food in the heart of Seattle?! ¡Si, por favor!
When I first spotted to menu, I got misty eyes. Names such as Morrocoy and Galipán made my heart glow.
Morrocoy is an astonishing coastal National Park in the East side of Venezuela, where I spent some of the best vacations in my life.
Galipán is a tiny town, comfortably nested in the hills of the Avila mountain in Caracas, where I first learned what organic food was. Throughout the years, I got to go to Galipán enjoy an awe-inspiring view of my beloved hometown, while cooing a pork sandwich with my hungry mouth.
Both names are honored by the delicious pork based, namesake sandwiches that Meza offers on its menu. The open kitchen, surrounded by an attractive brown-tiled counter, allows the clientele sitting around to indulge their eyes with the sight of crispy, loaded-with-flavor sandwiches being prepared.
The Venezuelan way to cook pork is particular: slow-cooked pork previously marinated in adobo, and then bathed in a hot mix of orange juice, thyme, oregano, wine, bay leaves, pepper and Worcestershire sauce. This might not be the exact recipe used by Meza, but the pork they cook taste like home to me.
Nothing like seeing a chunk of steamy pork fall apart onto smaller pieces, its aroma seducing the senses. Same thing happens with the "pollo guisado" (wonderful, moist and slightly sweet chicken) used as the main ingredient of Meza's "Arepa Playera" (chicken, avocado and cilantro arepa); the Fremont Sandwich (chicken, caramelized onions, homemade aioli and lettuce), and the "Toke de Pollo", a warm tapa featuring again the chicken and caramelized onions atop grilled Macrina bread slices.
Yes! Flavors very similar to ¡mi casa!
My only observation regarding the food has to do with the arepas. Meza is waiting for a new oven, which will allow them to make arepas in a better, more authentic way. I'm definitely looking forward to try them again, once they change the preparation.
The location is inviting and quirky, in a very charming way. It definitely beats other Latin restaurants when it comes to decor and ambiance. Colors are darker and simpler, the art is far from being cliché, and a cluster of well-thought details sprinkle the place. Furnished with local pieces and huge wine barrels, all these elements make Meza a relaxed and good-looking place where you can sit, enjoy good food and have a lively, fun (in Spanish if you want) chat.
There is an additional dish that is not in the menu, but you will always be served: the warmth, friendliness and camaraderie that has always been one of the loveliest treats of Venezuelan people. Alejandro, Meza's owner, is one of the nicest guys you will talk to in Seattle, and I am happy to say he's a great representation of the essence of the good things Venezuelan people have to offer.
In times where my country is being brutally beaten up by insanity, injustice and danger, is great to see the citizens of Seattle having the chance to get to know one positive aspect of Venezuela...served on the friendly, warm dishes of Meza.

Affordable tapas in Capitol Hill? Hell yeah!
We had a blast there last night, largely due to the hospitality of the owner, Alejandro.
There are so many things about this place that excite me:
- The space. With an eclectic mix of reclaimed, recycled, and handmade pieces of furniture, I couldn't help but wander inside. The gnarled wood bench and deep red glass chandelier were my favorite pieces.
-It's in my hood. I'm so glad there's a locally-owned space to chill out with friends, get a drink, get some nibbles, that won't send me into a diabetic coma, or blow my paycheck.
-The food. Alejandro is Spanish, but lived in Venezuela, and brought both influences into the kitchen. Plus, tapas are 3-5 bucks! Sandwiches and entrees are all 9 bucks or less! Yes, I'm using exclamation marks because it's exciting!
Since we'd wandered here after dinner, we decided to split a few plates. The three of us shared the Peritas (pear slices with blue cheese and walnut), the seared scallops (bay scallops, very fresh, perfectly cooked, with a lightly spicy red wine sauce and crostini), and the Arepita La Playera (shredded chicken with avocado stuffed in a homemade cornmeal pastry). The chicken was quite possibly the best chicken I've ever had. I'm not exaggerating. It was shredded, so I expected it to be on the dry side, but no. It was really flavorful, super moist, and delicious. As a bonus, we were given the Tortilla Espanola to start. It's a simple egg and potato baked omlette, but somehow he made it taste like so much more.
Alejandro was a fantastic host and promises to bring some of the quirkier events from the McLeod Residence (RIP!) to Meza.
PS--The liquor license should come through on Tuesday, 8/4. Plan to attend the "grand opening" (though he didn't want to call it that) party on Friday, 8/7!
PPS--They have A/C. Yes, air conditioning on the Hill. Score.
Meza has delicious, affordable food. I am so happy we went. We ate: the mushroom tapa (is "tapa" the singular of "tapas"?), the scallop tapa, the chicken arepa, and the Havana sandwich. All were fantastic, and the Havana sandwich was *almost* as good as Paseo's, in my opinion.
[gasp] Did I just say the sandwich was almost as good as Paseo?!? Yes, yes, I did. It wasn't as big, or as gooey, as Paseo's, but it was absolutely delicious and came with this amazing green (tomatillo?) salsa.
So there are a few tiny issues to work out before I can give Meza 5 stars (but I am sure it will be there one day!) - mostly small service issues that are totally forgiven because they just opened. Like, our water was never refilled, I would have gladly purchased a second glass of wine had I been asked if I wanted one, and the tapas could have been served with a bit more bread. But! All small things, easily fixed with more time.
I will absolutely be back. AND they are open until 3am on Fridays and Saturdays!
What a delightful dinner of tapas and sandwiches!
For tapas we had the Torilla Espanola, Toke de Pollo, and Negro Borracho. My fav was the Negro Borracho (drunken black mushrooms!).
For sandwiches we had the Havana and Galipan. Both came with a tasty house-made aioli dipping sauce.
The space is great too; nice and cozy with funky furnishings. Plus outdoor seating!
Looks like this is going to be a great addition to the Hill. Priced just right, this could be on my list of weekday dinner restaurants.

Best pork (pernil) I've had in years! It's cooked to perfection and it has the perfect(!) Venezuelan touch of sweetness and spice... The chicken is amazing, too! I've tried about a third of the menu already and everything has been wonderful. As a Venezuelan, I've got to recommend the arepas, which are so good... All are delicious but the vegetarian arepa amazed me just because I hadn't had one before.
Alejandro makes every dish with care and to the last detail, and he makes sure everyone at the table is taken care of.
Overall, Meza has a unique, relaxed ambiance. I particularly like the glass above the kitchen, which lets the natural light in, and the beautiful wooden ornament in the restroom. Hope to be back soon...
This place was a ridiculous find. We stopped in for a late lunch on Saturday, as the husband is always obsessed when a place promises him a delicious Cubano. He drooled his way through the Havana, while I scarfed the Ibiza scallop sandwich. Mine was so overwhelmingly like the most delicious squid sandwich I had one late night in Barcelona that I almost cried. The wine and sangria were also both great, and the decor/service were flawless. I'm only sad I don't still live in Seattle because I can't shove this deliciousness in my bocadillo hole again until I visit.
We tried Meza a few days ago. We're always interested in seeing what's new in our backyard. The evening we visited, Meza's liquor license had not come through yet, and soda was the only beverage offering available. Lucky for us, they were super nice about letting us run to a close by store and bring back a bottle of wine.
The wait staff was also very friendly...our waiter a bit too eager. You know the kind; the type that after you ask for a few minutes because you haven't had an opportunity to review the menu items, you feel hovering in the background. Also fast forwarding to the end of our meal, the waiter brought us our check before asking us if we would like anything else. This truly makes me appreciate when I do get great service without it being too intrusive.
Now the food wasn't bad, but it wasn't amazing either. We ordered the mushrooms with sherry, the seared bay scallop bocadillo, the braised chicken with caramelized onions and an olive plate. The mushrooms were tasty with a touch of sherry and a nice smokiness. The chicken was a little dry and didn't pair very well with the caramelized onions (they were good on their own). When we ordered the scallop sandwich, the waiter asked us how many stars out of 5 we wanted; we chose 4. He was a bit surprised, commenting on how he found 3 stars really spicy. The overall flavor of the sandwich was good but there was no heat whatsoever! Later when the waiter came back, we told him that there was hardly any heat, he responded by saying that it was the other cook that usually made the the sandwich super spicy. Sounds like they need to work on consistency.
We want to like Meza! We loved the quirky artwork on the walls and the nice staff. But there was still kinks to work out and get their liquor license. We'll probably have another go in a few weeks to see if they've hit their stride.
I went here last night with the hubbs for a little after-work tapas/drinks. Only thing is that they are still waiting for their liquor license so the drinks part didn't happen...hence the 4 star...but the food was really quite good! The owner said they should have their license in the next couple of days :)
Simple, inexpensive and delicious...all elements I like when trying to get the most for my money and my tummy. The owner even brought us a complimentary tapas to get us started while our other food came out. It really did remind me of my time in Spain! We will definitely go back - good food, good atmosphere, nice service and in my neighborhood! You can't beat that! Once the wine list is in place they will be unstoppable!
The Galipán braised pork sandwich was so good that it caused me to hallucinate. SO GOOD. Like, bang-your-fists-on-the-table kind of good.
We tried other items that were very yummy too, but I can't even get past the Galipán at this time. Don't ask me to move on, I won't do it. I am still savoring the remains of the dreamy visions.
We'll visit again soon and hopefully they will have their liquor license by that time.
Yay, Meza!
Great place! This is a small tapas place located in Cap Hill. I went there with a couple of friends and we ordered a variety of dishes to share. Everything was simple but tasty and was well complemented by the pitcher of sangria we had. I will be returning to this gem.
Having Meza as a neighbor is amazing. The vegetarian options are great. My favorite meal is the vegetariana with a Mexican Coke. The staff is always super nice too!
This place is fun and the food is yummy. Love the arepitas and everything else we tried. The place is pretty small but sitting at the bar is a fun option. Can't wait to go back!
Went here after the club last night since they're open until 3am on weekends. I was weary of the food because as a Latin I have high expectations of Latin food.... I was surprised. It was very tasty, especially for dining at 1am.
We had toke de pollo (rotisserie style chicken), scallops, and puerco (pork roast) with the most delicious black beans i've EVER had. At first, I thought it was strange because they didnt serve the meal with rice, but let me tell you, those beans can be eaten alone anytime. The atmosphere was nice and relaxed, music in the background was low-key and smooth, we will back here again and again. Very reasonably priced as well.
It has been pretty exciting recently in the 'hood with the addition of new places in the 14th Ave/Pine/Pike area. One is Meza, a fantastic tapas and sandwich place with a latin fare. The place provides an intimate (and I mean intimate) setting where you can watch up the owner and his small crew chef up some delectable offerings. The flavors are amazing--they do a wonderful job combining seafood and spicy (try the spicy scallops!). Nice offering of cold and hot tapas so you can try various items, or a nice selection of sandwiches and entrees at a reasonable price. Their version of the Cuban was fantastic. Staff were super friendly and helpful.
My BF kept peeking into this place while they were getting ready to open so the owner remembered him when we showed up at 2am one night after the Seattle Lindy Exchange. Pork sandwich was delicious and service was friendly and fast. Can't wait to come back and try their other stuff. I'll update my post then.
I'm still a fan.. good location, great hongos and I have tried more items and like them all. The wine confusion is a thing of the past. The only thing left is to make that vegetarian plate a bit more interesting. The arepita with veggies is now delish with caramelized onions, so I'm just waiting for the vegetariana plate to get a bit tastier or more complex, so it compares with the meat plates which are the same price and look way more enticing. After all, why should meat eaters have all the fun?

This place in fantastic! The atmosphere is fantastic....and so is the food. I highly reccommend the Hongos (Mushrooms sauteed with garlic and sherry) and the Cuban Sandwich. The Havana sandwich is quite cravable...probably one of the best sandwiches to have crossed my lips.
This neighborhood place is really good. they have a cute patio, as well as charming interior. the staff was friendly- especially the owner- and cared that we have a good time. we'll be back soon.
for those of you that like the food run-down, here goes:
-scallop sandwich (ibeza sp? i think) was great. scallops done perfectly well, love the bread they use on the sandwich, great sauce. the spicy salsa sauce is good for giving it some more kick.
-mushrooms in sherry sauce. awesome flavor, and just the right amount of crispiness
-chicken&avocado corn arepitas were amazing. that chicken might be the best i've had, and blends really well with the fresh avocado chunks and the crispy outside-soft inside corn bread.
-havana sandwich. great blend of flavors... you know, i really appreciate it when people serve you a sandwich that is really cohesive- the flavors go together, it's juicy, but not soggy, and everything stays inside the bread. this was all of that.
-great wine, we had a riojo, and ours was $6/ generous glass.
I'm also astonished at the reviews of this place. I thought I was going to throw up after I saw the trash bags that contained the Macrina bread from the filthy floor, placed on the cooking station and then put back on the floor and the cooking station was not wiped down. The shredded cheese out of a bag sandwich arrived cold because our waiter was texting while it sat on the bar for 10 minutes. I could go on and on but I won't and I won't go back.
Fantastic!! It is so nice to finally have a reasonably affordable and totally delicious tapas place in Seattle. The hongos and the Havana are phenomenal. The homemade sangria is pretty tasty, but watch out - you might be inclined to order more and more pitchers...
I am totally confused as to how Meza has been receiving such strong reviews...I ate there last night as a part of a group of four and we were all thoroughly disappointed. Two of us had the scallop sandwich, which was decent, but definitely not worth $11, which is the price when paired with a meager, depressing salad akin to something one would expect to be served at a nursing home. The bread used for the sandwich was pretty good, but they get their bread from Macrina, so no duh. The pulled pork sandwich, however, could not be salvaged by delicious bread. It was tasteless, mushy, and grayish in appearance. Frightening. The Arepita Vegetariana was a disaster. First, it was served many minutes after the rest of our food appeared; when a restaurant makes you wait that long to receive something it better taste as though the extra time was warranted. This was not the case. The corn cake was totally bland and spongy, somewhat like I imagine drywall would taste if one was to peel some off the wall and have a little chew. The cake's contents were equally disappointing, like three measly chunks of avocado and a few onions thrown in as an afterthought. Blargh. Also, they do serve wine and beer, but the selection is meager, like two wine options and two beer options. The waitstaff would be advised to learn proper pronunciation of drink and menu options. It is "Negro Modelo," not "Modelo Negro." Sheesh. At any rate, if any of the above sounds appealing to you, go to Meza soon, as I predict they won't be around in about 3 months from now.
