People in my office are way more fans of Maya, but I like Mexico au Parc's al pastor burritos. They don't mess with that pineapple business, authenticity be darned. At $8+ for a super burrito, it sets you back a little more than Maya's, but it's just a different feeling altogether.
Service is friendly and quick, the burrito is made right in front of you on the grill, and they have a lot of options that they will tailor to you. I will say that their chips leave a little to be desired, but their salsas do not. Not exactly spicy, but flavorful and delicious. I come to Mexico au Parc when I want Mexican food, but don't want to be engorged afterwards. It's a good option when you don't want a salad or sandwich at the park.
I feel like a failure. It's been over a week.... with nary a new review. Thank god for my friend amanda, who's helping me find new places to eat close enough to work for me.
I showed up in fear... nay in sadness. I only get 30 mins for lunch, and this place is popping like a prepubesent pimple! Like splattering on the mirror popping.
I get in though, and I see how quick the line moves. Happier than a swedish school girl, I order a delicious carnitas super burrito, get some chips at the register... and voila! 5 minutes later I have a seat and a burrito bigger than my head.
I like the food here, but I mgiht have been more in love with the ambiance. All the workers are smiley, it's not too loud, and you can sit by a window and look at the highschool kids skateboarding in the streets.... (I try not to wish they'd fall... but I'm only human).
The burrito was highly above average, thought not the best I've ever had. TO those people complaining about a price hike... get over it! Perfectly fair prices given the location and business..
Sorry your 8 dollar burrito now costs 6 instead of 4... it's still a deal!
Mexico au Park is not really different from other Mexican lunch spots in SOMA. The food is ready to go when you come, cafeteria style. It's fast satisfying and yummy but nothing to go nuts about. The location and furnishing of Mexico au Park though is definitely a step up from other places, well lit and at the same time cozy and inviting.
Southpark nearby is another killer Plus. You can have your take out outside on a bench or at a picnic table in the sun. Can't ask for better during your lunch break. For a hungry stomach I recommend the super burrito with "green" chicken.Credit card limit is $10.00. That is a little annoying as it is more than you usually pay for a single lunch. So bring cash.
i love the burritos. I LOVE THEM. that's all i can really say! Oh and get the Agua Fresca :)
Who doesn't enjoy a salsa bar? Its a sight rarely seen in the taquerias of San Francisco. BUT $7.75 for a super burrito? Come on.
I like their burritos, but I don't love them.
On the plus side: They offer delicious breakfast burritos in the morning, and for lunch have a variety of burritos, tamales and sopes. While there is usually a long line, the people making your food are quick (the people ringing you up are slooooooooooow). It's a decent burrito if you go that route, not too greasy, can definitely grab it to go and avoid the post-burrito coma at work after.
On the downside: While they offer 15 different meat choices most of them are dry or flavorless. None of their salsas are spicy and the overabundance of rice doesn't add anything...but rice. Oh yeah, and they take way too long to cash you out when you have a burrito in your hand and are so hungry you'd happily eat the paperbag by the time you get to the register.
Although they can sometimes be disorganized, Shatangi always leaves Mex au Parc with the best burrito. The service is fast and friendly and there is ample traffic to assure that the food is always the freshest. Perfectly located. Bravo a todos!!
Shatangi told you...
I used to like this place enough to eat there once or twice a week for lunch, but over the past month or two they've changed enough that I end up disappointed just about every time I eat here. A few weeks ago they raised their prices, which is fine, they didn't even make them much more expensive. But, the quality of the food went down dramatically. The burritos used to be better than average for San Francisco, but now I can't think of a local place that has worse burritos than Mexico au Parc. The main problem is that they started skimping on the fillings. Their burritos used to be average size for an SF burrito, now they are about as big as those little frozen burritos you can get at a gas station for $2.
I was okay with the price hike, but when they lowered the quality of their product to go along with it my stomach just couldn't justify eating there anymore. Not when I can go home and get a burrito from el Castillito on Church & Market that is twice as big, twice as tasty and costs $1 less.
If their burritos went back to their normal size I would be happy to start eating here again, but for now I'm taking my burrito dollars some place where they at least hook up a meal-sized burrito that will keep me full until dinner time.
Who knew such a nice and cheap Mexican joint hidden away in little South Park? I did not know this little pocket of San Francisco existed until today, but I'm loving the fact that it's close to my workplace.
I must warn though, drippy tacos can ruin everything!
DRIPPY TACOS = A NO-NO
Seriously, both my shrimp taco and steak tacos were pissing salsa water. The steak was good and there was a lot on one taco. The shrimp was peeled too. Still, I regret getting hot instead of mild because I was dying from the salsa they put on it. I wish they had not put any on and just let me do it myself since they have a salsa bar.
3 tacos + 2 drinks = about $15
$8 minimum credit card purchase
I will be back for the burritos...
My regular (small) burrito that used to cost $4.95 is now about $6.50.
Do you realize that is a 30% increase?? I realize costs are going up (so you tell us) but dammit there is a recession going on if you hadn't noticed and a 30% increase just lost you my business by at least (if not more than) 30%.
In fact, I've been back a total of 2 times since the increase and that's only because a co-worker insisted that we here for lunch.

My co-worker has been trying to get me to go here for months. But I NO LIKE MEXICAN FOOD. Well,… Read more »
Probably the closest thing to a mission burrito you're going to find in this neighborhood. Mexico au Parc does not make outstanding burritos, but they do satisfy that burrito crazy much better than anyone else in the hood. That being said, it's also nice to be able to grab your burrito and go enjoy it in the park.
It's cheap, it's close, and it's got a decent salsa bar.
It's not a cheapo burrito joint.
After dropping off my laptop at the laptop hospital, I decided to take some time to enjoy a neighborhood I haven't seen in 7 months. South Park was jumping with commerce today! The economy is alive and well in San Francisco. People were interviewing at the tables, talking about new job assignments, and phoning me with opportunities. Yes, phoning, but none of the other diners seemed to mind.
The steam table looked about normal for a burrito shop. I ordered 2 super tacos, which turned out to be beans, rice, shredded lettuce, shredded cheese, sour cream, and carne asada piled so high on 4" flour tortillas that I couldn't even see the tortillas. These, with a real Coke hecho en Mexico, cost $9.75, and I got a free basket of corn chips on the side. There was also a salsa bar, in case I wanted something on the chips. I ate the tacos with a fork, because I couldn't pick them up.
The weather was beautiful, as were the clientele, and it was a pleasure to walk through the park before and after lunch. The Gran Oriental Filipino Masonic Hall dominated the scene, and apparently had a lot to do with the park's redevelopment and revival -- there were also Gran Oriental Filipino apartments on the north side of the park.
It would be nice if the 30 and 45 stopped closer to South Park, but I was able to find the offset bus stop "at 3rd and Brannan" without too much trouble. Hint: It's closer to Townsend than Brannan; keep looking.
Honestly, this may be one of the worst Mexican places I've been to. I've tried it three times, each time coming away with a stomachache and a huge pile of soggy "mexican food". I've tried the burrito, the sope and the tacos. None were good - all were soggy messes of flavorless meats/beans/cheese. This place reminds me of the places that masqueraded as "mexican" in NY (Yes, burritoville, I'm talking to you). Three times the charm. Not coming back here.
Great burritos! Get the Azteca burrito.
Their Mole is SOOO GOOD.
I love the flan also.
They are super sweet, and bare with my spanglish. I try really hard to break my order down for them in Spanish, and they correct me when I'm wrong. I like that!
Grab it to go on a sunny day during lunch, sit in south park, and love life.
Well, that's what I do!
Pretty decent burrito. They are filled pretty full of stuff and not wimpy like some other places I've been to. Their tortillas are pretty thin, which I sorta like, but sometimes the burrito fillings bust through because of this and then you have a sloppy mess on your hands. Make sure you have napkins on hand!
Any place with a salsa bar does a Mexican restaurant justice. I am proud to call this place my "neighborhood restaurant" because it's really good. Hands down the best Mexican food in SoMa. It's not Mission Mexican, but it's damn close. The shrimp quesadillas and the azteca burrito are favorites. If there's room, try the flan. Prices are moderate, but the portions make up for it. Lines are usually out the door for a reason. For quality food, Mexico au Parc is worth the trip.
This is a great spot to grab some lunch if you work in the area. For me the quesadilla is the way to go. Gotta love a hot, gooey cheese filled chicken quesadilla. The aqua frescas are always really good too.
Only real downside is that there is usually quite a line, but that is the sign of good food I think.
I love me a good burrito.
I especially love a good burrito that is affordable and within walking distance (for me, that is like one city block). Mexico Au Parc is my go to burrito store in SOMA. One negative: a line out the door during peak lunch times. It usually moves pretty quickly, but it's never that fun to wait. I recommend the breakfast burritos; my fave is the mushroom! Add some cheese and some spicy salsa and I'm set for the day!
Another super deal is the super taco with your choice of meat...with some chips and salsa it's plenty to fill you up for lunch for less than $5!
I almost ate here daily.
It's cheap, it's good mexican food, VERY fast service, and 4 minutes to my office, what else do I want more?
I like the ladies who work behind the counter when they yell at me "NEEEEEEEEEXXXXTTT" with a really low key. :)
I go here often for lunch. I was always avoid the crowd and roll in at 1:30 or 2 pm and I have no problem finding a seat and relaxing. The food is average, service is fast and there really is no Mexican food near by and No Tres Agraves is not Mexican and I will slap you if you even suggest that place! Big fan of Tacos and Quesdillas.
This is a great spot for lunch.
The tacos are pretty decent size and come with grilled flavorful chicken.
They are reasonably priced.
The best part is the salsa bar and the bag of chips. Oh and the awesome park - South Park, especially on a nice day.
when: weekday, lunch
This place is super close to my work, so a lot of my coworkers like to eat here. When I tried it, I ordered the super burrito, which I found more soggy than I would like it. The chips were alright, and the salsa was good. It fell apart and got pretty difficult to eat towards the end, and i usually handle my burritos well.
I went around lunch time and it was packed. The line was out the door. The place was packed and it was a little hard to move around. I dont recommend groups dining in during lunch on a weekday. A lot of the companies around seem to go to this place.
I havent tried Maya's yet, but I would make the walk out there to satisfy my craving.
You'd think a joint named Mexico Au Parc would serve slices of bell pepper with an organic taquito garnish for $$$. Far from it. Mexico Au Parc is a little taqueria that offers hearty authentic fare on the cheap.
I work around the corner and come once every two weeks. I usually get a torta al pastor. The way they prepare it, I can't think of any way to make it better. Despite the long lines for lunch, the grill is usually free and I'm out the door in five minutes. (And even if you have to wait in that line, it moves fast.) The burritos are good, too; the super will last for at least two meals. I can't forget the people who make those meals--they always greet you warmly.
Mexico Au Parc is the epitome of sunny South Park. If I ever have one of those mornings when I'm banging my head against the keyboard, I come to Mexico Au Parc for a Mexican sandwich and a smile.
The staff are friendly, and this IS a burrito place I can walk to from work, which rates a star on its own. That said, the burritos are just ok, kinda bland. To be fair I am a little bit of a burrito snob, and a pescatarian which rules out 3/4 of the menu for me. The super veggie was not as big as i'm used to and for the first time ever in my entire life I just tossed the butt end, rather than try to finish or save for later... Its just up the street from work, however so I did return after getting a super veggie that was only so-so. I tried one of the dinner options for lunch the 2nd time through, figured if I was spending more like $10 I might as well get a whole meal...So I did the cheese enchiladas with black beans and rice, and liked that much more than the soggy somewhat flavorless super veggie. The staff is friendly, and its the only burrito accesible from work, but I'd say go with a dinner option or some kind of quesadilla thing..and load up on the extra salsa cuz the food is a bit whited out.
Best burritos in SOMA. I eat here a few times a month.
The burritos are big, well made, the ingredients are fresh, and the line moves quickly.
Only complaint is the seating inside is fairly limited, especially for groups larger than 4.
South Park is my favorite destination for lunch.
A little grassy oasis ringed by cute cafes. There is no better outside place in the area aside from the Crossroads garden.
Mexico Au Parc (I try not to get hung up on the fact that it has a French name, though the Romance languages section of my brain is screaming "Nooooo!") is the classiest Mexican around these parts.
The carnitas are canitastic! I always get the "tostada without the tostada" which is basically a big pile of rice, beans, meat, guacamole, lettuce, tomato, and sour cream since that deep fried bowl makes my arteries scream "Noooooooooo!" If you're ever hungover though, it is highly recommended. Basically like a big flaky, salty croissant. Mmmm. Even without the tostada it'll keep you going through the end of the day for $5.50.
They also do a fantastic shrimp quesadilla. Just like in Me-hee-co. You'll need a fork unless you intend to leave covered in cheese and sour cream.
Very nice place in South Park. Many of the folks here also work at La Fonda in the Inner Sunset. Never made the connection until now... duh!
PROS:
1. The food is actually really tasty, fresh and not greasy
2. Serving sizes are just right
3. They don't over cheese everything
4. The staff are very friendly and the line moves really quickly even during peak lunch hour times
5. My company has ordered many a staff lunches from here and no complaints, only compliments
6. Reasonably priced
7. Grab your food and find a nice spot in South Park to watch dogs walk around and grown ups swing on swings
8. GOOD salsa!
CONS:
1. The line can just get a bit frustrating if you're in a hurry
All in all, a great place, good food, good service and definitely a place I go to often.
I eat lunch here once a week and my burritos are great about 90% of the time.
I recommend the veggie burrito on whole wheat with extra onions and avocado.
Just devoured a Mexico Au Parc burrito for lunch, so I figured that my ridiculous food coma would allow me to write the best review...
After waiting in a long line (it was out the door!) I was ready for some serious Mexican food action. I tend to stick to the super burrito, which includes guac, sour cream and cheese in addition to meat, rice, beans and salsa.
The ingredients are very fresh and I love that they melt the cheese directly onto the tortilla. Don't forget to hit up the salsa bar on the way out! It will take you a while to fill up enough of those teeny little containers with pico de gallo to cover your enormous burrito.
They accept credit cards but ask for an $8 minimum.
Solid Mexican food near my work. Certainly not my favorite burrito in the city, but it works for a tasty lunch.
Compared to Mission Burrito Joints: It's no Mission burrito joint (dirt-cheap-but-insanely-tasty) but
Value: I like this place because I can get a decent lunch for under $5. The veggie taco is huge and a fantastic deal for $2.80.
Variety: some interesting things like sopas, which is a johnny-cake made from masa (the same dough as corn tortillas), and chile rellenos.
Cleanliness: everything's clean and fresh and you never worry about later that day when, you know, the food's past your stomach.
The Line: it goes really fast, and now that they put in a smaller drinks cooler you can actually start mentally preparing before you hit the counter.
Join the rest of the yuppies from startups and design firms in line, folks!
I know I shouldn't expect too much from a burrito joint in SOMA, but when I saw this 4 star rating I was pretty excited, I was definitely left underwhelmed though.
Everything was OK but nothing was really great. I had the Tostada Bowl with Carnitas. The meat was tender but it was somewhat lacking in flavor, as was the guacamole. The Tostada bowl however was a delicious...it was a giant fried flour tortilla, and boy was it greasy and tasty. I think that my Boyfriend's burrito was the better choice, although it too was somewhat lacking in flavor.
The best part is that this place is located right next to the park which is the perfect place to take a load off and eat lunch. It's definitely no El Farolito, but for SOMA it's pretty damn good.
Stumbled across this place today when I decided I would finally figure out where Jeremy's was. Well, yay, I found Jeremy's, but I didn't even go in because I'd already spent 20 minutes walking there and needed to eat and not spent 90 minutes on lunch. So I walked back up South Park and ducked in here.
Had a steak fajita burrito that was as long as my forearm. It was pretty good, although it was kind of bland even though I requested the hot salsa in the burrito.
The small salsa bar has this fantastic red onion salsa. It was a purplish tint, with a hint of jalapeno. It was pretty amazing. I'd probably return just for that. The quesadillas looked good too.
I liked how the walls were covered with prints of Diego RIvera, pictures of Frida Kahlo and other Mexican art. Pretty classy joint.
----ETA - I just took a bite into the 2nd half of the burrito I couldn't finish (it's a few days later) and I found the hot salsa that didn't seem to be there before...would be nice if I could've had this when I was choking down the first bit. The salsa's nice and hot though!
I wouldn't recommend coming here in morning for the breakfast burritos. You don't get the bang for your 5 bucks, and the chorizo tasted re-heated from the previous day.
Both the super and the azteca (wet) burrito cost the same. I love the red sauce for the azteca burrito. Lines move quickly during the lunch rush. Added bonus is they don't have those cheap flimsly forks, I mean I know its plastic forks but they have the more durable ones for take-out!
the carne asada nachos are pretty good..the burrito is decent. overall it's an ok place for lunch. does get pretty busy. it's so close to work i cant complain too much.
Just got back from what was probably the worst Mexican food experience I've had since I moved to SF 11 years ago!
First off, Mexican food is supposed to be fresh, fast and fun to eat! Mexico au Parc served none of these things.
The line moved fast, but when I went to order I wanted grilled chicken tacos. Well you can't order something grilled from the line I was in. So I had to go to the next line. There is not clear signage explaining their bad organization either. Note: if you have to eat here don't order something grilled.
Here's why:
They wrote my order down on a sticky note. Well the sticky note must have gotten lost in the salsa because then I proceeded to wait 15 minutes for two tacos. That's right folks, 15 minutes. That's almost half a lunch time, for some people!
I open up my to-go box to two of the nastiest looking tacos I've ever seen. Nothing about it looked fresh, or fun to eat. The meat wasn't even inside my taco, but haphazardly falling out of the taco. The salsa (if you could call this salsa) looked more like pureed tomatoes from a can dating back to WWII. The salsa tasted even worse-just jalepeno spice, nothing else. The tortillas tasted like they'd been through a washing machine they were so WET!
So all and all, don't go here. Eat somewhere else in the Park and actually enjoy your time there.
Isn't that just about the best name for a restaurant? And before you get too excited, no, it's not French Mexican food.
Mexico au Parc is, however, the best taqueria in the South Park vicinity. Variables for taquerias include steamed versus grilled, the taste of the beans, the quality of the salsa. All three are met with excellence here, though they do steam the tortillas.
Extra points for location, cilantro, and jalapenos and onions at the salsa bar. Eating in the park on a nice day is highly recommended.
"Wah wah wah it's super yuppified and not authentic, whine whine bitch bitch moan moan." Which is hilarious, because burritos are about as Mexican as Chop Suey is Chinese. What MATTERS is how it tastes, if it's fresh, and if it's got those essential burrito elements - Mexican rice (no plain white rice - that's right I'm talking to you Chipotle!), good beans, cilantro, yummy salsa, and fresh guac (and good cheese and meat if you're into that kind of thing.)
On these points Mexico Au Parc delivers. And for less than 5 big ones my tummy is happily stuffed, and my taste buds are smiling. My only complaint is that I hate when places ask me if I want the spicy salsa and then it isn't even medium. I don't know about anyone else, but THIS white girl can take the heat, so turn it up!
It's adjacent to the charming urban oasis that is South Park, so if it's a beautiful sunny day like today I recommend taking advantage of it and walking your burrito to the Park ("Parc" is French for park, for those of you who don't speak French. Yeah, you're welcome.)
French name? Effing yummy tofu ranchero in my burrito? I don't care if it ain't "authentic" PUT IT IN MY BELLLLLLLLYYYYYYY, UNGH.
Mexico au Parc is delicious, cheap, and full of cheerful employees! Bonus: get tomato, spinach, or whole wheat varieties on tortilla! Take outside for a meal on the bench in the park. Love to come here for lunch :)
Yet another great restaurant in South Park. While it's well organized for the lunch crowd, it isn't open on the weekends and closes (oddly) at 4:30. Has spinach, whole wheat, tomato, and flour tortillas. Only problem with the burritos is that cheese is extra; my biggest burrito annoyance. Overall good, esp since burritos come with free chips and salsa.
