    *THE REVIEW*

I hadn't been to The Mexican Village since the 60s. I worked a block south of there for over 30 years, and I knew the neighborhood. I think they opened in '65, a couple of years after I started working. It's always been a family-owned business. They started out as a very traditional Mexican eatery -- both in menu choices and in decor. Then they had a fire that almost wiped the place out. It might have been during the last riot, when everything on Vermont Avenue from 3rd Street to Beverly got torched.

When they re-opened, it was to a new approach, and now the place is one of the top night spots in the neighborhood: heavy on sports watching and dancing. There's plenty of room to dance all around the bar. There are large flat screen TVs tuned to the soccer games and a HUGE projection set: the screen must be at least six by eight feet! And of course, plenty of room for customers who come to eat -- two rooms. Speaking of which:

FOOD & DRINK: We stopped in for lunch, and Sachi had a huge salad which was cold and refreshing, and I had the Spinach Enchilada. Imagine two enchiladas on an oval plate. On one side, Spanish rice, and on the other side, frijoles refritos. The dish is decoratively garnished with splashes of sour cream, quacamole, cilantro leaves and flecks of red and green bell peppers, White cheese is melting in an interesting pattern across the tops of the enchiladas and beans. Wow, does it look good! And it tasted good! The spinach was bright green, cooked just right. In fact the whole thing was just right. And I also had a strawberry Margarita to go along with it, which was strong and refreshing.

By the way, the introductory/obligatory chips and salsa are first rate: the salsa is really good: thick, full of diced veggies and greens; the chips are served hot and crisp. They are mostly yellow corn chips, but with just a few red and green ones thrown in for effect. And they keep 'em coming! We had three servings before the meal came!

SERVICE: Excellent! Ask for Jessica if you can. She's the brunette beauty with the blue eyes and the interesting tats on her arms. Everyone was friendly and attentive.

AMBIANCE/ATMOSPHERE: My God, the party starts at noon! There was a large crowd sitting in the other room at a banquet table having a great time (One guy kept laughing explosively: "HA HA HAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaa!" The pitch rising on the long "Ha"). And couples started coming in right away. And it's a pretty place, done up in a kind of "Olvera Steet" look. And I got an impression of *cleanliness*! Clean bathrooms too. And guys, you'll like this: the urinals are loaded with ice cubes, so you can have fun making 'em melt when you go!

VEGGIE FACTOR: There is indeed a small selection of veggie items on the menu.

    KID FACTOR: Sure

NOISE FACTOR: This is a party place. Expect it to get loud and raucous at times.

    ===============================

    *THE WRAP-UP*

PRICE RANGE:  Reasonable, averaging out to about $15 per.

    PAYMENT: Cash, CC

RED FLAG: If you go at night, go with friends. The neighborhood...

GREEN FLAG: Great place to have fun!

AMBER FLAG: Parking lot is a bit difficult to get in to. Approach the place going east on Beverly so you can make a right turn into the lot. Getting out is also a bit difficult. You'll do best to make a right turn out of any exit you find, and then working your way to where you want to go.

    BOTTOM LINE: ¡Mucho gusto!

    WORST SERVICE EVER!

I've ordered from this place twice for delivery, I always give a place a second chance, plus it's the only Mexican food place near me that delivers.

The first time the food was only lukewarm and sort of soggy, I figured maybe they had gotten lost since my apartment building is a little tricky to find and I forgave them for that since it was pretty good food.
But!!! The delivery woman was INCREDIBLY RUDE!!!!
I had given them my door code on http://grubhub.com as #****, well, she didn't put in the # sign. She said she had to wait for someone had let her in (she had my phone number, I've had several people from grub hub simply call me if they have trouble and I'm more than happy to meet them downstairs) and then proceeded to literally yell at me about the experience. She shoved the paper with my order details on it in my face saying I gave her the wrong number. I said no, that it was right, then asked her if she had entered the pound sign and she said I was wrong and that the machine was broken and shoved my food into my hand and left.

The second time, my fiancee and I ordered food from them together. The same delivery woman shows up and my fiancee answers the door. This time, the woman lingers uncomfortably and kept looking around my fiancee to look into our apartment! We have nothing to hide, lol, but it was still very strange!!!
This time the food was again VERY COLD and VERY SOGGY! Plus, the food was very bland.

I have passed by this place a million times over the years but never actually stopped there until today. I met a couple of friends for lunch, and I have to say I was pleasantly suprised. There's a bar, a good sized dance floor (guess I'll have to come back during the evening sometime) and 2 dining rooms.

The atmosphere is basic Mexican restaurant but the service was good and the carnitas lunch special was delicious!  Since it was lunchtime on a work day I skipped the margarita but can recommend the food and will definitely go back again. Maybe I can review drinks next time around.

Three years and nothing has changed.  The waiters are dead slow and the drinks are weak as can be.  A $3 margarita makes for a great happy hour but the crap they serve is more in line with lime koolade.  My shredded beef tostada was okay, but then they charged me an extra dollar for the sombrero tostada.  WTF?  I order a run-of-the-mill tostada directly off your menu with no substitution and you try to charge me extra for serving my tostada in a tostada.  When I mentioned the charge to the waiter, he acted annoyed that I had checked the bill before paying.  And while he did remove the charge, he also shorted me on my change.  Wow, three years and the f'ers are still playing their little game.  Well, so long Mexican village.  Next time you get burned to the ground do us all a favor and leave the place a parking lot.

What can you say about the Mexican Village?
    1. It's a cliche?
    2. It serves margaritas?
    3. The salsa is on the watery side?
    All of this and more.

The Silverlake WAKA (aka, Kickball) league uses the Mexican Village for its local watering hole. We drink copious amounts of beer. We hang on the outer porch and relive the games we just played. We dance like wild people -

WHAT? yes. you heard me. They have a dance area right off the side of the bar/restaurant. It's very loud. It's very neon. It's very, well, Mexican Village.

If you don't mind street parking or the mediocre Mexican fare and have a penchant for drinking and dancing - well, my friend, you'll find a home in this Village.

Come here with coworkers for lunch all the time. Nothing spectacular. Has a very standard feel to it, like an el torito. There's just no...flair. Nothing too bad either though.

    Decent margaritas and albondigas soup.

This review is for service only.

I was very annoyed today. I went for lunch with two co-workers. When the bill arrived they had cash and I had my debit card. They both gave $20 bills.

We asked our server to take $35.00 cash and to charge the remainder on my card. The remainder was $6.03 and we left at $6.00 tip. My card should've been charged $12.03.

We get back to work, I log in and check my account on-line and see a charge for $35.00 and for $12.03. I check my purse for the receipts and see that I only signed for the $12.03.

I call immediately, the owner takes my number and says she has to check the slips and will call me right back. When she does, she states she checked with our server and the slips. The server accidentally ran my card for both amounts, but then voided the $35.00 transaction. She stated that it was Mexican Village's policy to only charge cards when the slip has been signed. She said they had no slip for $35, so no charge would occur. However, since the card had been ran the bank had already put a hold on the money.

She told me to keep an eye on it and if it had not been cleared within a week to come back in and she would give me the $35 in cash. Blah blah blah. I told her the server should have informed me of his mistake so I could be aware of the charges on my card. What if I didn't have enough in my account to cover both transactions? What if I would have over drafted or been declined?

What annoyed me the most is that she never once apologized. Bleh. This is the type of thing that makes me stop going to places. Now I'm shorted $35 bucks on a three day weekend before pay day. It's not that big of a strain at all, but it's the principal of it. You can't go around fucking with peoples money.

Beef, chicken. I couldn't really talk about the entrees because I didn't get any food. The buffet for the party ran out.

Best unsweetened black iced tea I've had though.

Complementary valet parking due to the party.

Flan was served with whipped cream and cinnamon. Yum!

Dance floor available. I think they have dancing one night a week.

After reading the reviews here on Yelp I decided to check it out for the 4pm-8pm $1 Taco Bar Happy Hour. Unfortunately, they didn't start setting up for the taco bar until 5:30.

    So not cool!

Since I had arrived around 4:30 I ended up having to order from the dinner menu because I was hungry when I had arrived and didn't want to wait.

I think whenever you write a review its important to not set one single standard for every place you go. Each place has its own different vibe and way they operate so in order to achieve the right experience you need to know what your getting yourself into before hand.

My two friends and I went to the Mexican Village Restaurant the other day at 7 PM. The place was not really that busy so as soon as we walked in we were seated. The gentleman was very nice and prompt and quicky led us to our table. The chips and salsa were very fresh and were exploding with flavor. The salsa had the right amount of kick with a combination of different ingredients. They kept a good eye on us and whenever our chips and/or salsa ran low they brought us more.

My fiance ordered the fajita plate. They brought her a seperate plate with beans and rice and salsa for her fajitas. The chicken itself was full of flavor and cooked well. It was brought out on a skillet with onions and peppers. Nothing was burnt and it was easier to enjoy having it on two different plates.

Our friend ordered a tostada. The shell was prepared perfectly and all the ingredients were in perfect balance.

I just ordered a chicken burrito with a side of rice. The burrito was very good, a bit small versus other places but it was packed with flavor. The chicken was not dry nor under cooked and all the ingredients were combined perfectly.

The rice and beans were really good. The rice was not dry or too wet but had the right level of moisture.

They have a very reasonable happy hour that lasts until 8 pm. We enjoyed a pitcher of Margarita for only $15. There was enough for all of us to almost have 3 full drinks a piece... A really good deal. The margarita itself was very tastey. I admit the taste was a bit tart for my own taste but it wasnt bad.

For all three of us to eat and our Margarita pitcher we only paid $49 dollars. For great food and enough Margarita for 3 rounds, it only worked out to be about $18 a piece. You would pay that in drinks alone at most places.

Based on Service, Taste, Price and the overall Vibe of the Mexican Village i give it 5 stars.

I am sure when they are busy its hard to get the same promt service but thats the same anywhere.

    Thanks for reading :)

I came here for lunch on a Wednesday with a group of 8. Service was great! Food was delicious! And they even have a really informative place mat with the map of Mexico!

Once we sat down, they brought us chips and salsa. A good snack to eat while waiting for the food to come.

I ordered the CHICKEN SUIZA ENCHILADA. It was on their special menu that was on the table. For $8.95, there were two enchiladas, and rice and beans. The portions were pretty big, especially if you finish all the rice and beans. The white sauce over the enchilada with the melted swiss cheese was delicious! There were lots of chunks of chicken in the enchilada. I was definitely getting food coma that afternoon.

Service: Great! They kept coming by to refill our water. Once someone was done, they came right away to take the plate away.

Parking: The restaurant has its own private free lot.

i went here for valentines day a couple of years ago because they had latin dancing.  the food was really good and its always fun to be serenaded by a mariachi band.  i would just say that the dance floor was a bit small for a latin dance night.  latin dance requires a bit more room than your average club grinding.   An overall pleasant experience and I would go again.

The Mexican Village was our kickball league's game bar, so we'd all head over after each game.

the bartenders and servers are really nice and the drinks are strong. i've never eaten the food mainly because i've seen it and it didn't look that appealing or that authentic.

whether its salsa music or a DJ playing, the volume level is ridiculously loud.

this is certainly not a place where i'd ever go, outside of hanging out with my kickball buddies and playing flip cup.

It's so hard for me to review this place, because I use to come in my 20's to go "clubbing" here and now I'm coming in my 30"s for co-workers birthday luncheon and to cure my events from the night before with bloody mary's"s and abolongia soup to make me feel better. The staff and service are great.. Would I come out of my way from home to eat here? No... would I come for my lunch hour, Yes. It's reached it's peak for me.

The crazy part about this place is it has literally been around for ages.  I remember my mom taking me to this place when I was about six or seven.  I would be the pudgy boy sitting in the corner eating enchiladas while my mom was at the bar boozing it up with old cubans...but that's between me and my therapist...

One crazy long night in Silverlake (see Medusa and AAA Review) I ended up walking over to The Mexican Village.

Step to the place, and I don't remember a damn thing looking familiar.   Then again, it's been about 15+ years, and my ass continually forgets where I park.

Different age groups, mostly latin but different music, and a small ass dance floor made for an intresting night, and I tend to like being the center of attention...

So to the point, booze weren't great, werern't watered down, it was just cool.

Older folks, dancing some salsa that I could not duplicate in my life, but it was cool.

The lady getting a lap dance for her birthday was super cool...

Her crew asking me to give her a lap dance for her birthday was....not cool......I was still sober.......and I'm not a good dancer :(  .....but was still cool.

This place has been around since 1965, and it's got some good things going for it.  Easy parking in a marginal location, OK drinks, and the food is downright good.  The tacos are just OK, but the real shining star here is the chile relleno, very, very good.  Tastes fresh, not like some of those Mex places where the egg coating around the pepper tastes old.  The sauce that accompanies it is great too, and the beans are yummy, a cross between refried and "frijoles de olla".

The loud salsa music playing is kind of a pain in the ass (and ears), but the food is good, the service is courteous, and if you're in the neighborhood and craving a good chile relleno, look no further.  I suspect this is the kind of place that if you came in 3 or 4 times, they'd remember you.

$3 for the most lethal batch of margarita this side of Sonora.

Happy hour RULES at the Mexican Village!

I drink about 2 of these deadly concotions and I am on the floor, puking my guts out, and wishing I never touched alcohol in my life. That's every Thursday and/or Friday night my friends.

We like to come here because, let's face it, we are some broke ass G's. They have a small selection of happy hour grub that's totally free. Just go to the main dining area and right by the partition is the freebie grub. It's easy to miss so keep your eyes peeled.

I've had some bomb ass tostadas and flautas (it changes from day to day) and they have a healthy assortment of fresh cut fruits and de riguer cucumbers con chile ye limon.

For the herbivore friends, I suggest the grilled veggie nachos. The veggies are totally showered in seasoning salt (not very traditional, are we?) but it really works with the gooey cheese, the famed gaucamole and sour cream. I never had nachos with vegetable brochette- it's really delicious so you should try it!

Some nights they have free salsa dancing lessons and a DJ that plays 80's dance pop/freestyle dance music. Jody Watley, anyone?

One time, I spotted a totally dysfunctional couple getting into a huge fight after mas margaritas. The girl accused the totally retarded looking guy of trying to bust a move on her homegirl.

"Do you have bad intentions for Harland???!!! Well you can HAAAAVE him!"

There's free parking and an ample comfortable smoking patio as required by my stringent standards for star ratings.

Service is A+ over here!   Food is A-.

Okay, that is being finicky.   In general, I'm going to have to say that the food is a notch up above your typical  Mexican restaurant in L.A. when it comes to quality.

Ambiance is warm and friendly.  Music and festivities on Fridays and Saturdays.   Come late for dinner and have some drinks and work it off on the dance floor after.

Once again, to reiterate,  the service over here is bar none, A+.    Our server was approaching our table every 5 minutes to see if everything was 'cool as a culo.'

I have not been here for Happy Hour, but according to past reviews, it looks like it's a Must

Stopped by for a quick dinner with the boy.  I'd never been, but he said it was good and this fool LOVES Mexican food.  He was quite pleased.

I got soup and it was good, too bad I can't remember the name.  It was very fresh.  Chips and dip are good and I almost filled up on them.

I went the non-traditional route and ordered a salad.  I thought it was going to make me feel light, but it was like eating a burrito that walked on top of a head of lettuce then decided to pass out and explode.  I know Mexican type fare isn't really the healthiest, but I just wanted a salad, folks.  If I wanted the whole enchilada I woulda ordered, well, an enchilada.

I will say this about the place, Happy Hour looks like it's poppin' and the service here is 5-star.  Very friendly people and they invite you to come back as you head out the door.

And the boy?  He loved his food and was quite content with eating mine as well.  If he was on Yelp, I'm sure he'd 6-star the place.  Me?  I think I'd only come back if I wanted a nice, non-Acapulco dinner, but if you need me, I'll be scarfing down tacos at Cactus down the street.

When I worked in Koreatown this was my favorite lunch spot. This place has an excellent selection of authentic Mexican dishes. Its not just tacos and burritos. I would always order the steak picado plate and a Margarita on the rocks. Arguably the best Margaritas in town. Really good stuff and their not stingy with the tequila.

The service staff is extremely friendly and attentive. They sit you right away and take your drink order. They always check on you,  top off your drink (non-alcoholic), and ensure that you have an excellent dining experience. The owner of the place has a daily hands on role and is always there in case you need anything.

Although I never attended, they also have salsa dancing on weekends and late at night.

I had lunch here recently with a small group. It was my first visit to Mexican Village in nearly ten years. This was never a favorite place of mine. It is even less so now.

I ordered a Chile Colorado burrito which was undersized and dreadfully bland. A friend ordered arroz con pollo and had to search to find the chicken, which appeared to be shredded for some reason.

With the wealth of fantastic Mexican restaurants in LA to choose from, there is little reason to settle for this place. Sorry, but I'd say it's no better than your neighborhood Acapulco Restaurant.

First and foremost, know that Mexican Village has THE BEST guacamole in Los Angeles, and is certainly a contender for best fresh salsa, as well.  The portion of salsa that they bring out is quite larger than what you get at most other Mexican eateries, which is great; though it's free either way, it makes the dining process of eating quite more efficient.

The atmosphere is pleasant; it is more upscale than most other Mexican restaurants, and the waiters are friendly and attentive.  There is generally a nice fellow who will go around offering to sell a rose to give to your S.O., and on Fridays the place is a somewhat lively club replete with salsa dancing, as well as a restaurant; this makes for a fun time, but, it is QUITE loud.  A couple times when I went there, the woman who owns the restaurant, who is a very friendly older Mexican lady, was sitting next to us and asked us how we liked the food; when we told her how much we loved the guacamole, she had them bring more out for us.  How cool is that??

Drinks are good, and the food itself is quite good, though much of it are slightly more ornate interpretations of somewhat standard Mexican food: tacos, burritos, taquitos, etc.  Their guacamole salad is AWESOME as one could assume after realizing how completely killer their guac is.  The desserts are awesome as well, particularly the rum flan, which is, of course, lit on fire in a pleasant little display at the table.

So if you find yourself in the Mid Wilshire/SIlverlake/Koreatown/Downtown area, consider this place to take either your significant other for a more romantic burrito, or a goup of friends to prove that there is, indeed, upscale Mexican food in Rampart Division.  It's a couple blocks East of Vermont off of Beverly.

I like the Mexican Village. They have a parking lot which is a HUGE plus in my book! It's the perfect place to go with your honey, or friends and just eat good mexican food and do a little dancing afterwards. The party gets started at like 10p when ppl start coming in only for dancing.

I think my sister and I had the sampler which comes with a little bit of everything traditionally mexican, like quesadillas, tacos, etc. I'll have to go back and try an entree so that I can update my review.

I was very impressed at the quality of the food. At a place that you would not think would have great, authentic food, I was happily mistaken. I had the cheese enchiladas and they were delicious. The tres leches cake was equally a great dish.

The service was a little slow, but the server was quite polite and eager to please.

    Thumbs down.

I vouch it takes a village to make me feel a bit off for the rest of the night.

I had high hopes for this place...but it was nothing special.  I make better guacamole at home.  I had the chi ken mole enchiladas, they were good, but i don't think I would ever go back for more.

Maybe a nightclub scene with descent food but not a place to go just for dinner.

I really want to try La Casita from watching Throwdown the other night. Looks like real Mexican food... I got it bookmarked

The service here is impeccable.  There is an older gentleman, who was difficult to understand, but was crazy fun as a waiter.  He delivered the beer bottles to the table on his head.  He was very sweet to us.  Not only him; the parking attendant was careful to make sure we were taken care of, the host was really nice, and the bartenders were very inviting.

Their Mole was the shit.  From Pueblo, Mexico; it made my night!  Yummy chocolaty goodness.

Also to please have a kiwi-margarita!  It was not too sweet with just the right kick of TEQ.

The patrons were very diverse.  Families, couples, party-goers.  It is a place for everyone.

Long-time loyal customer.  Economy is bad; however $2.00 charge for jalapenos is ridiculous!!!  I overheard Diane (owners daughter telling the wait staff, "If they order one taco don't give them chips and salsa".  Not savvy.

The Mexican Village was at it's prime ten years ago.

I'll be back.  Stumbled upon this spot, and being a purveyor of Mexican restaurants I had to pull in and check it out.

The $5 valet was a turn-off...but as soon as I stepped inside I was swarmed with service.  Sat in the bar area...TVs going with soccer, and it looked like they were prepping for the late crowd - security, etc...

Thin, light, and FRESH chips served with a very clean salsa (clean meaning that it was almost on the franchise restaurant tip).  Ordered a customized version of the steak fajitas, and they were spot on...Cadillac margarita was very good - and strong.  The food seemed higher quality, and on the healthier side as far as Mex goes...I fucked up everything on my plate.

Even though the parking situation is lame, the place is definitely worth eating at.

OMG this place is the pits! I've been there a couple of times before but the service and food were just absolutely awful!  My husband and I decided to have a later dinner (approximately 9:30 pm).  As soon as we walked in I can tell the Maitre'd had an attitude as if we were a bother to him.  Excuse me for giving you business dude!

Our waiter Jorge M. took forever to get to even ask us for our drinks.  When he finally came over we didn't see him for another 15 minutes.  Note: My husband and I were to the only ones dining and there was no one at the bar! Our order was finally taken and it came out relatively quick which was a surprise but it was luke warm!  I tried to get the waiter's attention but between the waiter and the Maitre'd were busy looking at the soccer game on TV.

When I finally got Jorge's attention to tell him about our luke warm food he came back with our microwaved food and major attitude!  By this time I guess it was getting closer to closing time and I got the impression they couldn't wait to get rid of us.  Both the Maitre'd and the waiter kept looking at us.  Nonetheless we took our time eating and drinking and left when we were good and ready.

If we ever go back there again it will be too soon!

Mexican Village is not that sweet.

The food here isn't really that great. It wasn't super bad or anything, just not really good at all. The dishes were pretty weak. The chips and salsa and margaritas were decent. They did the job, if that's what your looking for. Overall, I wish it were a little more colorful/festive, like most cheesy old Mexican restaurants. I guess its OK, since there were plenty of locals there, just not what i was looking for in the super festive category.
