Metropolis. OH, Metropolis. A local artisan father-and-son coffee shop. These guys know coffee, and it shows. As others have said, this place is always busy, and there is a reason. Popular with Loyola students, there isn't enough seating for everyone at most times of the day.
The prices are a little higher than your average DD, (though somewhat on par with sbux) but the baristas really take pride in their work. I was talking to one guy the other day who was practicing making really pretty lattes. And it was- a perfect leaf design on top.
Yes, it is hipster central. And it can get loud. But man, this place has personality and life, both of which are sorely needed on this stretch of Granville in my hood. I am very, very lucky to live within 2 blocks of this place.
*****ALSO, I must mention that last year, I sent a big care package- 135 lbs- to a friend in Bagdhad, Iraq and his whole platoon. I asked him what they needed/ wanted, and one of the items on the list was "GOOD coffee" (I can only imagine what the Army serves) so I immediately thought of Metropolis, and emailed the owner. He responded right away and gave me like, 10 pounds of beans in a donation, directly from the roasting plant! Pretty cool, huh? Good people. And now they have a customer forever....*** -

Holy crappers, this place has some strong ass mochas! I like mine strong, but some sugar is needed when I get one from Metropolis. Their coffee is reasonable, but their sizes are atrocious. Their small is the size of a shot glass, though I guess the price suits the size. I'm no connoisseur when it comes to coffee, I can just say with honesty that this isn't the best I've had.
I usually only stop by when i'm meeting someone nearby and I will definitely not be here on any will of my own. I've tried that and spent more time looking for a seat than actually enjoying my coffee.
I do like that it's not quiet, so people can actually play games and chat without necessarily disturbing anybody. If I come back in the future, I'll most likely just have one of their fizzy, French lemonades and a chocolate chip cookie. To go. -
Review from Rodger W.
Now that Casteel Coffee has begun "importing" roasted beans from Michigan, this has become the goto place for locally roasted beans. The Redline Espresso is a delicious, full bodied, and versatile blend that works well in any preparation style. I really enjoy their other more seasonal blends, especially, the medium bodied Yemeni and South American roasts.
Yes, I am aware of Intelligensa Coffee, but I have issues with establishments that encourage snobby atitudes among their staff. You are a barista, not a brain surgeon. In your case "bedside" manner counts. -

I have fallen in love with Metropolis Coffee since moving to the Edgewater area (it rivals me other love, Inteligensia), but most times have had it at other coffee houses, not the actual cafe operated by the franchise. True to form, this place delivers with a mean cup of coffee and some great menu items. It doesn't hurt that some of the baristas are attractive and give great service with a smile. One thing Metropolis truly excels at is iced espresso drinks. Unlike many other coffee houses I have been to who just pour the milk on top, they also add a small dose of frothed milk to give the drink a little extra kick. So good and so worth the walk up to Granville.

From Starbucks, a short Pike with syrup and steamed soy top, free refills on your card... That's probably the best "value" for the cost-conscious daily coffee drinker/student. Ballgame Starbucks.
But you want a seriously sick cup? Metropolis is in a different league.
There's fast-food coffee (Starbucks/Dunkin Donuts), nothin wrong with that if you're busy, on the run.
And then there's artisan coffee. Like whoa. I don't have the vocabulary to explain how ridiculously good this cup is. My olfactory senses are hard-core titillated right now. The roast the beans here.
The food coming out of their kitchen. I'm gonna have to come back here with a bank roll because I think I chew a considerable chunk of their inventory.
It's noisy. But its packed. It's packed because its good. And people know that its good. So if you want quiet, stay home or go to a library. Or do like me and pipe WBEZ thru your noise-canceling headphones.
The first room is bustling with counter traffic and people finding seats. The second room is extremely bright. Like you could do surgery in here bright. So bright I might have a seizure if I don't put my sunglasses on bright. So bright I could make scrambled eggs with a magnifying glass bright. Lots of people in the 2nd room having conversation. Coffee-dates.
And the innermost room, more my scene. Muted colors. A little bit more chill. More people staring at their Macbook Pro's focused on content-creation. You can make mojo in this room.
The coffee is the name of the game. The pastries are bigger than your face. The bread smells great.
Come here. Its worth it. Come again. You'll question why you go anywhere else. -

Great coffee and enough room and tables to study or to just hang out. Although I don't live too close to the area I sometimes make the drive just for their coffee. They also have books and board games available while you're visiting.

Great food and coffee, plus a lively atmosphere what more could you ask for? I particularly enjoyed the delicious almond croissant! A busy cafe but it was still easy to find a table as there are three separate seating areas.

I used to come here with my friend a lot, just to chat and drink (what i thought was) white mochas (but i guess was something else, either way it was yummy). I stopped going for a while after they messed up my mocha (or whatever flavored beverage i ordered) but i decided to go back last week and re-visit.
Now this place is so robot-y... So corporate and doesn't even feel like the same place.. Three years made a big difference. Everything seems super planned and "square".. Even the people that were there last week, everyone so snobby, looking down on you just cause they haven't seen you around before. Seemed clicky.
Coffee was so acidic I had to buy a muffin to soak all that acid in, so it wouldn't hurt my stomach. Muffin was OK but nothing special..
I found Daily Cup on Devon a couple months ago, I think I rather hang out there.Comment from tony d. of Metropolis Coffee Co. 9/10/2011

First of all, I must say that the coffee is absolutely the best. Oh man, if you like good coffee, I mean truly appreciate a good cup of coffee, this is the place.
Now with that being said....the lines are so long! A 30 minute wait sometimes! So this is why I rarely go to Metropolis.
The breakfast sandwiches are also the best, interesting ingredients. Pastries are good too.
The staff is the typical for a coffee house: snooty baristas. But hey, I just want my coffee.
Expensive too. -
Review from Kat F.
The only thing I didn't like about this wonderful café was how far it was relative to all my other Chicago pitstops. Still, it's worth the trek to Edgewater and easily accessible by public transit. Chocolate mint cupcakes are a crucial accompaniment to any espresso-based drink. Since you'll almost certainly be purchasing beans, take advantage of a free small coffee with any purchase. Their signature Redline Espresso pound is dirt cheap at only $13.25 per bag, and something I pick up on every visit to wonderful Chicago.
Free wifi for two hours. -

Really nice atmosphere, very dense with people and tables. Good color scheme. Service was real nice, not aggressively polite, and also not too laid back. Got an 11¢ discount for getting my drink in a mug for here. Coffee's not all it's hyped up to be; I had the Falstaff Blend: real bright, thin body, kinda walnutty. Also, the muffins are alright.

Almost a five star - best pour over coffee I've found - at least five minutes, carefully done - a work of art - but this place is always packed and bustling so be prepared - if you want a sleepy little place playing avant garde music this isn't it - if you are looking for the best coffee, around, however, this is it

Review from Johnny T.
You already know the coffee is phenomenal. It is. I am not a coffee guy. Check my lists. I am a leaf man. I leave the bean to everyone else. But, sometimes -- sometimes -- I am in the mood for a cup o' joe. And, surprise of all surprises, I am not talking about some frothy, creamy sweet frappe (although those are delicious and you will never be on my bad side if you buy me twent... one. One.). I am talking an honest-to-goodness, let me smell/taste what you're known for cup of coffee. And the coffee here is excellent.
You know this.
What you might not know is that Metropolis is staffed by some of the most genuinely nice people I have had the pleasure to meet in Chicago. Seriously. Nice, how-is-your-day-I-really-want-to-know have-a-taste-of-this-before-you-buy people. At a coffeeshop. At a highly successful busy coffeeshop.
If you didn't know this, now you do.
Chicago's lucky to have some might fine coffee establishments. I have been to quite a few and read/researched the others. It's true. But, unfortunately, the number of businesses that make you happy just to be there based upon the positive attitudes and good energy of the people working there? That's not as rare. And, *that's* what makes MCC so awesome.
I hope I haven't jinxed them. -

Great coffee. Too expensive though. Long lines, 15 to 20 minutes to get your coffee. The staff is very nice, except the managers which I believe they need more training to learn the basic rules of customer satisfaction.
Like giving you a new coffee if you are not satisfied with the one you were given... -

Metropolis is the Cheers of Edgewater, as the baristas are extremely friendly and memorize your drink order once you stop in a few times. It has become one of my favorite places to work that I don't mind the 15 minute walk from my apartment to get there.
The wide selection of food makes Metropolis the ideal place to work or study throughout the day, as long as you aren't there on the weekend when it tends to attract a noisier crowd.
The coffee is consistently good and flavorful, but alas I've recently switched to tea (which Metropolis also has plenty of). The coffee shop offers premium and standard coffee and tea, and frequently rotates the food/pastry case to keep you coming back every few hours.
If you're a coffee fanatic, Metropolis has recently started to offer Intelligentsia coffee along with its own selection. -

LOVE LOVE LOVE metropolis! Okay, maybe I'm biased because it's a block from my house, BUT everything you get at this place is great. They actually have baristas, not some lame machine that does all the work. Their mexican hot chocolate is to DIE for! AND they're food is delicious. This is my saturday morning stop for coffee, breakfast sandwiches, and something sweet. The staff is super friendly, and the atmosphere is great. Move over Starbucks, this place is the real deal!

Excellent coffee, wifi, an interesting crowd, and I can actually find parking. The only problem is that I can rarely find a table and often find myself having to take my drink to go because there is no seating. Metropolis, one star off for not anticipating that your awesomeness might require a larger seating area to accommodate your customers (not that there's anything you can really do about it). Just come armed with a Plan B in case you can't find a seat.

Definitely one of the best places for coffee in the city. Down side is that a lot of people know this and it gets super crowded. When the cafe opens in the summer before work, there's a line outside and it could take 15 minutes to get your cup of joe. On the weekends, the Loyola kids flood the area and you can overhear some odd conversations. It's hard to find a place to sit after 11 or so and it gets really loud after 1.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am a coffee junkie. I probably drink too much of it for my own good. I am going to try to visit more independent places rather than the chains. I decided to start with this place and I am pleased that I made this decision for several reasons.
1) I really like feel of vibe of this place. I am sure it is a mix of decor/staff/customers that makes me enjoy it.
2) The staff here is great. They were very friendly, welcoming, and they all genuinely looked like they were enjoying themselves.
3) The coffee is outstanding!

Even better. Good food, good coffee, good prices, good crowd, good selection, solid member of the community. Only okay parking, but hey, it's in Rogers Park near the lake, not in Chesterton Indiana.
I wish Metropolis was a lot closer to where I live. Instead, it's a "catch up with your friends who live in Rogers Park" sort of place.

I LOVE this place! Absolutely my favorite coffee shop in the city. It's only a few blocks from the red line and a couple blocks from the lake, and always buzzing with activity.
This independent, family-run coffee shop roasts their own coffee, makes their own delicacies in the bakeshop, and makes incredible Mexican Hot Cocoa. They recently started offering their own homemade granola: YUM! They definitely have a little something for everyone.
Metropolis is definitely a great place to catch-up with friends, to curl up with a book (or browse their shelves if you forgot one) or just to grab some fresh coffee for the apartment. And since it's so close to the lake, it's great to stop by before heading to the beach. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED place. -

My favorite coffee shop in Chicago! Why is it my favorite, you ask?
1) Free wi-fi (Note: You get a code which is good for 2 hours)
2) Lots of table space
3) Great coffee
4) They accept credit cards
5) Reasonably priced drinks
6) Friendly baristas
7) Total neighborhood joint
Don't go for the food, though. Overpriced and not very good. You'll thank me later. Also, parking can be difficult if the small parking lot is full. But this place is definitely a gem! -
Review from Yanyao N.
Okay, so now I adore Metropolis.
I blame JN and his love for Red Line Espresso for my budding latte habit now. And any place that doesn't use these delightful little beans can go shove it. Although it is named after perhaps the stinkiest of CTA lines, the Red Line espresso is a far superior product to anything I've had. Don't even utter the "S" name in my presence -- I've seen the light!
Metropolis (the coffee shop) is glorious! On top of the Hoosier Mama pies and quiches that they sell (tonight I picked up a slice of coconut custard and a slice of pear), the people that work in here are the sweetest people on the planet. The "cashier" read out their entire list of syrups to me tonight because he didn't want to forget or repeat anything. The barista sang Bohemian Rhapsody, complimented me on my hat (panda hat, duh) and made a foam heart on my latte. Everyone else was all smiles. Such a darling environment!
Now, since I am now back on the espresso wagon, I can say that the drinks here are divine. The lattes are excellent. Sometimes they do a latte of the month - so fun! In December I had one called "The Seven Year Itch": a guest espresso (!) with soy milk, sweetened with honey and flavored with cloves. Swoon! Tonight, I had a regular latte with a flavored syrup.
Syrup!! One of Buddy the Elf's favorite food groups! One of the baristas who works here has actually started making some syrups from scratch! The in-house vanilla is wonderful. It will sweeten any espresso drink perfectly. None of that "2 pump" business (ahem, S*******) to save you from a sickeningly sweet drink. At Metropolis you ask for a 12 oz. latte with house-made vanilla syrup and your drink will be perfect. I promise. Plus, save your sweet tooth for that pie!
Bravo Metropolis! Tonight I walked out of there with the same feeling I get when I leave Birchwood Kitchen (my perfect and probably favorite Chicago eatery). Not an easy feat. Hugs all around!Listed in: Beans!

Hands down, no questions asked, the best coffee in town. They are busy most of the time, but I stop in before the train to work and never really wait that long at all. The staff is really nice, efficient, and they always remember my name. I might be biased because they are on my way to the train, and I have fun crushes on a few of the guys that works there, but it is great coffee. And actually, I walk past the train and back to it for the latte in the morning.

Now, I don't believe an establishment should be rated solely on how they handle Groupons. If you want to read my Groupon rant, go to the very bottom of my review.. However, my review of the actual shop is directly below...
I got a monster drip coffee and a chocolate croissant here last night. They warmed up the chocolate croissant for me and it was absolutely delicious. Flaky, chocolately, melt-into-your-seat-good.
The drip coffee was good as well. I know Metropolis are pros at this stuff, but I praise it nonetheless. It was slightly bitter (which I love) and had a bunch of super tasty deep flavors going on.
Nice coffeeshop ambience. The baristas were super nice. I'd be back, especially since it's so close to me. I just might not buy a Groupon again, haha.
..Groupon Rant.. So I bought a Groupon for this place that expired at the end of the day, thus, I only had a few hours to use it. It was $7 for a $10 coupon for a sammich and coffee. I show up. There's only 1 or 2 breakfast sammiches there, and it's 6:30pm. LAAAAAME. Eventually it was decided that I could get a pastry in place of a sandwich, and I'm not sure the total of the pastry and the drip coffee even came to $7, so I either broke even or slightly lost money on this. Bummer. ..Groupon Rant.. -

I am not a coffee drinker. Coffee to me tastes like.... the worst imaginable taste. One time I got tea from somewhere, and picked up my friends coffee instead. I spit it across the room because it was the nast. However, I do like coffee ice cream. Strange.
Anyway, the reason I shared that bit of information with you was to explain why I didn't get coffee at this coffee company.
I went to metropolis because my friend and I wanted to go somewhere to chat. It was so cute inside! The first thing that caught my eye were all the lovely baked goods at the counter. I saw some hoosier mama pies (which i LOVE). So I decided on a hoosier mama cranberry/peach pie and some mexican hot chocolate.
Both were delicious!!! Of course, I loved the pie, especially the delicious crumblies on top. The hot chocolate was also delicious, and they even did some latte art in the foam on top.
I think the reason I liked this place so much though, was the warmth inside. Not literally (although yes, it was winter, and it was warm inside), but the servers seemed happy to be there, and so did everyone inside! Even the group of teachers next to us who seemed to be at a work-related meeting, even the people studying away, and the people there by themselves. Maybe Metropolis made me put on rose-colored glasses, but either way, it made me happy :)
Maybe rose colored glasses aren't such a bad thing ) -

-- Really really goddamn delicious coffee.
-- Intensely nice staff.
-- Spacious. Clean. Well lit.
-- Lots of power outlets and little tables for laptopping and internetting and generally getting shit done.
-- I heard THREE Lady Gaga songs while I was there, which does not exactly scream, "Drink coffee and do work and get shit done" at me.

What's a non-coffee drinker doing at Metropolis you ask? Well ordering tea and buying beans for my coffee swilling associates as Christmas gifts of course!
Nice selection of beans that had been roasted 1 day prior, and a very patient/helpful/kind employee who assisted with bean choice and proper bean storage procedure (airtight container is most important, temperature fluctuations not so much!). Despite the fact that I'm not really a coffee drinker, I did taste a light Ethiopian roast by them and it was quite good!
I recommend Metropolis to anyone who takes their coffee addiction very seriously!! -

Oh Metropolis, drinking your delicious coffee is like receiving a warm bear hug from a good friend. Your coffee dances and plays with my taste buds, always complex but also delicious. If I could lick heaven, I'm pretty sure it would taste like your coffee.
For 3 years you've been there to caffeinate me for those long study nights when my eyes feel tired and my brain fried. It was soothing to drink your coffee and get that burst of energy to keep me going through those long nights. You've been there for my friends when we needed a refuge to protect ourselves during the cold, desolate winters. You've warmed my heart with your hospitable staff, and your prices have been kind to my wallet.
Thank you, Metropolis. I love you. -

This review is moreso for the coffee then the actual place.
If you want really, really, really good coffee: Metropolis is the place to go to purchase their extensive, high-quality blends for consumption either in-store or out.
The actual location is very convenient, serving the Edgewater and neighboring Rogers Park community. That being said, the place is HUGE and can sit plenty of people, it almost always packed no matter what time of the day. The majority of clientele are neighborhood residents and Loyola University Chicago students.
The staff is very friendly and they absolutely know their coffee.
The RedLine Espresso as someone mentioned is fantastic. I had to buy a bag and quickly drank it within a week of purchase.
Any time I'm in Chicago, a trip up to the Granville L stop is necessary.
If you are looking for coffee, this is indeed the place. -

Producing some of the best coffee in Chicago.
Metropolis is an awesome coffee shop. They produce awesome coffee, and do their best to support the local community.
Yes, they switched to requiring a code (given freely with purchase) for Wifi. This change was made years ago when the owner came in late at night and noticed over 300 people attached to the wireless network when the shop was closed. The shop clearly communicated this via their mailing list at that time as being necessary to make sure customers can have fair access to wifi while they enjoy their food and drinks in the shop.Listed in: Loyola Area Recommendations, My Neighborhood

OK, I have said it before and I will say it again, I believe in second and more chances. I never give up on people, and even some places of business. And, well, I never really was that angry at Metropolis- really (sort of).
YES- METROPOLIS has LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNGGG lines ( do you sense my frustration, am I getting through? 'Cause I am seriously trying) in the morning. In fact, they are so long that I have taken my 20- 30$ Morning Coffee budget elsewhere. Sorry. I just cannot get my BUTT outta bed to wait in line for 20 minutes for Coffee. Even. YOURS. Not gonna happen. I have even decided that it was a bit too much to be spending- but what I am spending is going elsewhere.
But- the coffee. The COFFEE is SO GOOD! DAMN GOOD! I have LOVED it since they first opened. I have DROOLED over it since the scent started wafting over the hood (I don't smell it anymore- is it me or is it gone? sorry, tangent, I might need some more). I have requested BAGS OF the COFFEE for my BIRTHDAY. I LOVE THE COFFEE! I LOVE coffee in general, so this declaration comes out of my mouth a few times a day. HOWEVER, I REALLY, REALLY MEAN IT THIS TIME! Let me say it again, maybe you will believe me. I LOVE METROPOLIS COFFEE!
And tonight, Tonight, TONIGHT, METROPOLIS saved my JOB! I had a huge proposal due, my VPN was not talking to my Internet, and I was up the proverbial creek without a paddle. I considered sitting outside the library with the friendly vagrants and stealing their wifi, but, seeing as I needed a plug because the whole budgeting process was going to take awhile and I have a 17inch monitor (with HD) on my Laptop, it just did not seem to be the best choice. So, I decided to go to Metropolis. God knows that some good coffee could only help my world, and not only did they have COFFEE (which makes my world go round) they had the MOST AWESOME CHOCOLATE CAKE in the ENTIRE WORLD!
In the end, I got everything done, had a dinner of cake and DAMN GOOD COFFEE, revised my opinion of Metropolis and felt right with the world. Pretty Awesome. I can only wonder what would have happened if I would have totally blissed out and ordered a wrap and a cookie too! My God, I might have hit NIRVANA!!!!!!Listed in: GIVE me my COFFEE (please?)

So on our trip to Cali I did a review of the Venice Intelligentsia, and I got a tweet from Metropolis to give them a try my next time home so tonight we did
They make a good cup of Joe, but I need to try more from them as I am hooked on Intelligentsia, but we will be back to try more coffees from here
Now I was impressed with the fact that they have a bakery here and the Cupcake we split was super moist even though it was early evening and the frosting was soft and fluffy but creamy goodness
I loved the feel of the place and the vibe of the other patrons -

My favourite coffee shop in town. I will make the drive here despite the fact that I don't live in this neighbourhood. If I am ever feeling like I need a pick-me-up, this is my happy place for a warm hug. A place that does lattes like that are special. Their coconut cream pie is to die for but it's rather elusive and I miss it dearly.
Parking around there is a bit difficult... that lot they have is a tight squeeze! -

Hands down the best coffee in Chicago. We used to make Metropolis a daily morning ritual, but we had to grow up and be fiscally responsible adults. So, we start our day with Metropolis coffee at home. We are big fans of Schweik. It's a light roast with clean, citrous notes. Just plain good coffee. They also carry Hoosier Mama pies, which are heavenly especially the banana cream. Also their ham and cheese croissants are delish (i forget where they get those from).
