46 reviews for Metrodome
Reading all these reviews of the Metrodome, I'm going to say Yelpers are the reason for the construction of the Target field. Yep the acoustics really really suck.
Anyway, it was hotter than Hades last night and it was pretty cool in the dome watching the Twins finally win against the Royals. I imagine some Prairie Island nuclear waste was created cooling that place, so outside will be more environmentally friendly, right?
The fans really make baseball what it is-- it's pretty darn exciting when Twins scored 5 runs just like that indoors or out.
I will nary mention the food/drink and the cost, however. Some folks behind me were laughing at what they paid for their snacks; I guess that's all you can do. It's a crime that the major league baseball syndicate has to rob its fans like that.
Just no good!
'nuff said!
This place sucks. Ok, maybe I'm spoiled because I was born and raised on the north side of Chicago, spent seven years in Boston and now live in New York City. Comparing the Metrodome to Wrigley Field, Fenway Park, Yankee Stadium... I don't know how Twins fans have stayed so loyal to their team. Even the old Shea Stadium had more ambiance than the Metrodome. It took WAY too long for Minneapolis to realize they need a real baseball field.
Aside from the actual game experience, the food and drinks are pretty affordable compared to what I'm used to.
Yes, baseball is better outdoors.
Yes, if you're sitting on the upper level, you might as well be watching the game on your cell phone.
But I still feel sorry for the abuse piled on the Metrodome.
I appreciate that for a few years, we actually had a stadium, suitable for all seasons and multiple sports. I've been to many Twins games, usually rooting against the Twins, but still enjoyed myself.
Beer, baseball, brats, and friends go a long way. Would I like a little sunshine, too? Sure. But it still boils my blood to realize my tax dollars are going to build a new stadium full of pricey luxury boxes for some rich jackass as our state government implodes under a crushing economic downturn. What the hell?
So, farewell, Metrodome. You were adequate. You got the job done.
It got the job done.
If Yelp ever had a reason to allow for zero stars, the poor excuse of a sporting stadium known as the Metrodome is it.
Only reason I'm giving it any stars is because I have to. This place sucks. So hard. No baseball game should ever be seen indoors UNLESS the weather is not cooperating. I had the "luxury" of having seats 8 rows back from on the first base line. It felt way higher up, because of the stupid wall that separates the field from the stands. I can't imagine having seats higher than first tier. Gross. Just gross. Watching the game on a tv sounds more inviting.
This place sucks. I swore we'd never watch a baseball game here but managed to get tickets to a few games against our hometown teams. Sitting there for 9 innings x 2 with a sneer of disdain has caused some temporary nerve damage to my upper lip. Have you ever seen the Wave in a Dome? You'll hear it first...and keep hearing it...and then your eardrums will blow out, because the acoustics SUCK.
I love me some baseball. Sunday afternoon games in the heat of the summer have played a role in some of my favorite memories. Wrigley Field, Comerica Park...definitely not the Metrodome.
I am also a huge fan of Big 10 football and can't wait to see some pigskin at the new stadium. Don't know if I'll ever see a Vikings game, but for damn sure it won't be back at the Dome.
Bring on Target Field and TCF Bank Stadium! Let's close this business down!
Holy Hearing Loss! This place gets LOUD!! What with the crazy Viking people and their Viking horns and "Skol!"... I'm surprised the Hump Dome has not vibrated into the ground. This Lambeau girl flew in from Boston (transplanted) for the Game of the Century (Brett Favre is my other boyfriend, he just doesn't know it yet), and I just love the energy here. You Viking fans rock. Thanks for being so nice to me and letting me root for Brett even though I was wearing the Green and Gold (the purple bracelet and gloves helped). Conveniently located (I walked back to my hotel!), clean and comfortable stadium seating, nice big bathrooms and friendly beer people:) It's not one of those obscenely large football stadiums, and the VIP tent is awesome. And let's just say it was 45 and raining -- thank the gods for the Dome. Srsly.
Yes, Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome has its problems. The rows and seats are cramped, the ceiling puts opposing outfielders at an unfair disadvantage, and it generally looks even older than it is. Surely, the Twins' new stadium will have all the modern comforts and conveniences. I don't care, though; I'm going to miss the hell out of this place.
Being the baseball fan that I am, I decided to check out a Twin's game while I was in town for the weekend.
I can sum up my experience in one word - underwhelming.
Granted, I am pretty dang spoiled, growing up attending Mariner's games at Safeco so I am quite biased.
But, I can say this, baseball was meant to be enjoyed outside on a warm sunny day, with an ice cold microbrew in hand.
I'm glad I was able to experience baseball in another city, but it just wasn't the same.
I have such a love/hate relationship with the dome. It is clearly one of the worst places to watch a game. You are SO far away from the field, people that sit in the cheap seats are not allowed to wander the park and are made to feel like you suck just because you go to more than just one game a year and don't want to pay over $20 for a bad seat, sitting in GA is cheap, yes, but you totally miss part of right field and that's just not cool either.
The few things I do like about going to the dome is that the fans are always cool... Twin fans are some of the best in baseball and that's coming from a Brewers fan... and I sort of like the scene on Kirby Puckett Pl. outside the park but that's mainly because of the cheese curds. :-)
The dome, though, has brought some great memories to the game and will be a part of Twin's history.... no one will ever forget the home run hankies and your roll in the 87 and 91 World Series. Home field advantage means something completely different here and I only hope that Twin fans can bring it to Target Field.
Dear Metrodome,
I have been seriously looking back upon our relationship and I have a few thoughts for you. I don't feel like we are happy together anymore. I give and give (my money to the Twins) and you just don't give anything back. You are depressing. You weren't meant for baseball, and I wasn't meant for you.
Oh sure there have been good times! We've grown up together. But I am still young and I know that I have a whole life (of outdoor baseball) in my future. You are the only stadium I have ever known! While other people may be ready to leave you in the dust, I am finding it hard to let you go. But there is just a much sexier stadium in my life these days.
So basically what I am saying is that I am done with you Metrodome. I feel at this time, that I need to move on with my life, and visiting you any longer wouldn't be helpful for either of us.
Dear Metrodome, we have been through a lot together... A couple world series runs, division championships...The ups and the downs. We got through them together. You were there for me when we lost Johan. How did we get through that?
I would say that it's not you, it's me. But that would be a lie. It's all you. Target Field, here I come.
One of the crappiest ballparks in the country. There's a ton of bad seats in the house. Worst P.A. system on the planet. Seats are way too crammed together, which makes sitting through a 3 or 4 hour Twins or Vikings game extremely unenjoyable. I can't wait for the new field!!!!
Echo from the yelpers: "This place sucks." It does. Aside from the fact that I hate domes (see my review of the RCA Dome), my lack of investment in getting good seats left me up in the nosebleed section, and I felt like going back home to watch the game on TV. The game was bad too.
By far not the most impressive stadium I have ever been to, but it is the closest place where baseball junkies like myself can get somewhat of a fix. Leg room stinks, food is so-so. It is nice to be able to jump on the train from the Mall of America and be delivered right to its gates. Parking used to be a pain, but that truly solved the problem.
It is not a great place for baseball, but it has good atmosphere for a Vikings game. It is always packed, and just seems so much more alive than during baseball season.
When it closes it's doors to baseball, it will be a sad time because there is so much history, but at least we can say we were there and can remember "the dome". We will also be sad because come this time next year at a game...we will freeze at Target Field.
Watched the Twins game in the Metrodome. What a unique experience. Indoor baseball. You can hear everything and it was scary to climb the steps since the whole field was enclosed which made it seemed more...enclosed & claustrophobic! It was different, but baseball is definitely better outdoors. I sat by one heck of a loyal fan. He did full on dances, stomps, claps...I was afraid that he was going to trip and fall.
Worst stadium in America; Best homefield advantage in baseball. Sort of a Mexican stand off.
I hate seeing the Twins play there, but I'd hate to see them playing anywhere else. Target Field is going to be SO banal, mark my words. Yeah, it'll be great on a sunny day - but it's going to be the sunny day that's great, not the ballpark.
It's got horrible acoustics for concerts.
It's the worst place in town to be if you have to pee.
It's a dreadful place to watch baseball. It's only saving grace in that department is the fond memories I cherish of sitting next to my dad when I was small, hoping to catch a fly ball off the bat of Kent or Kirby (though in retrospect my lack of athletic ability would have made that a moot point had the situation ever arisen).
It's a mediocre place to watch football. It may well be the loudest stadium I've ever seen a game in, but it's just so generic and gray. It's time for Zygi to pony up and give us an arena we can be proud of that will endear itself to all the new development on the growing east side of downtown.
So I figured I should come Yelp this place since it may be out of commission soon! I hate the metrodome...or do I hate the twins... or do I just hate baseball, football, and any other sport played with a ball? These are all questions to ask myself when thinking about stadiums.. Will I venture out to the new Target field? That is also a good question!
The twins suck, and what sucks more, is the Metrodome. I hate sitting in stadium chairs though, so this may be bias, also I hate stadium food and beer. I hate the prices more than anything, I also hate the service you get, and the people who are actually really into the game! Oh well, I'm not sure what this place has in store for it come next year, but I am glad, I will never have to sit there in that balloon top shit hole anymore, pretending to enjoy a baseball game with my family. I do hope that target field has some more fun to it...Probably not though...baseball? ew
This stadium makes me angry. Very very angry. I drove past this today and again....angry.
Why?
- It's ugly marshmallow bubble look destroys any view it is a part of
- I generally have issues with combo baseball/football stadiums because they never work for both sports. In this case it works for neither.
- Baseball should not be played inside. period.
- Football I could almost understand, but still.
- Minnesotans need to man up. Everyone is so proud of the hardcore winters and the fact that they survive them. And then they build a dome. lame.
- It makes my ears pop! Pressurized dome as interesting architectural experiment, fine...but as actually utilized building, no thanks.
blech. I have a reoccuring daydream where I climb up on top and pop the dome. Then laugh with maniacal glee as it blows away like a balloon when you let go.
I really don't like baseball. I want that to be known.
But a friend had free tickets through work, so we took the bus from st. paul (had to walk downtown to get it, but hey) then we rode down 94.
There was some kind of free drink/hotdog VIP thing he had to go to, so I ate and drank for free in the parking lot.
Needless to say by the time I got inside I had to piss like a banshee.
Yes, another trough urinal!
Another tip about the trough: Things go a lot smoother when you really have to piss. Stage fright is not an option, and nobody cares who sees your wanker.
Review ain't gonna change, the place still sucks and I am glad the era of the new ballpark is soon, but I do have a tip for you (even though the season is drawing to a close and the new stadium will be their new home):
I went last night. Sat through 4-innings in my seats where there were people all-around us. Then went to get my obligatory Helmet Sundae and be eight-years-old and did not go back to my seats. We went to the left-field area where there were a total of 20-people enjoying the game. We sat just as close as we were before, but were able to spread out and put our feet/legs over the seat in front of us. Much much better.
Should attendance at the new ballpark not increase, I'd suggest doing that.

Went to my first Twins game yesterday.
I realize why we're building a new stadium.

Whenever I see this cystic eyesore, I want to pop it like a zit.
Down with the dome!
Now that I've been living out in San Diego, and have seen Petco and Qualcomm Stadiums, The Dome is a shoddy excuse for a ballpark of any kind.
It doesn't help that I hate baseball and football only entertains me for 2.5 quarters.
I had already heard all the negatives about this venue before setting foot in hear, so before jumping on the bandwagon , here were the positives about my visit
With a good sized crowd, the energy level here is high . With the Twins playing the Brewers in this inter-league matchup, one could expect a non-partisan crowd. And for a second, I thought I was at a Packers-Vikings game.
The Twins, for being a small-market and in my opinion, one of the most underrated teams in baseball, do a nice job of paying homage to their history by placing huge baseball-card sized portraits of past Twins, from Harmon Killebrew to Rod Carew, and of course Kirby Puckett, in the upper reaches of the dome.
The Metrodome features a mural on both levels of the concourse a HOF dedicated to famous athletes who either hailed or played in Minnesota.
For the Sunday game, I sat next to this nice family which was an elderly couple, their daughter, and their grandson. It was especially fun to talk with the elderly couple about games they went to at old Metropolitan Stadium ( now the Mall of America ) and their fondness of Tony Oliva to Kirby Puckett ( still the Metrodomes number one son, even a street outside is named after him ) and even talked about Sandy Koufax and how he baffled the Twins in game 7 of the 1965 WS. ( As a Dodger fan, I really enjoyed that, but hey, it goes to show this couple appreciates good baseball too....)
OK, now the negatives that you're expecting to hear....
It's a DOME !!! Baseball is meant to be played outdoors !!!
The concourses are narrow.
Not enough toilets in the restrooms. OK, I understand that if at all possible you try to avoid taking a dump in a public facility, but 2 toilets per washroom ?
The lower levels are sooooooo deep that if your in the front row, it's quite a hike to get a bite or use the facilities. Heck, I could hear people gasping for air as they reached the top, and it wasnt just those with AARP cards either.
Did I mention it's a DOME ? Oh yeah, if you are sitting in the lower outfield seats, you may want to come early for batting practice. This will give you a chance to adjust to the white teflon which they call a roof here, should a long blast come your way. It really is easy to lose a fly ball up there, and you dont want a home-knock knocking to your noggin, would ya ?
I've only been here for Twins games, so this review will be Twins-centric.
The other reviewers say it well:
- it's an indoor stadium. I understand MN weather as well as anyone, but gosh darnit, baseball is meant to be played outdoors.
- acoustics are awful. I understand about half of what the announcers say.
- No food or drink allowed. Now, that's their prerogative. But food here is *so expensive*. I believe you can either restrict people from bringing in food/water *or* you can charge outrageous prices. But you should not do both. If I am not allowed to bring in my water bottle (even an empty one), then you should not charge me $4.50 for the smallest size beverage. That just makes me cranky.
On the upside:
- The Twins have a slight and/or what I would consider a slightly amoral advantage on catching fly balls since they have so much practice in the dome :)
- Leaving the Dome there's a huge *whoosh* of air that pushes you out the door. That's fun :)
- The lightrail is pretty convenient to the stadium.
- Lots of bathrooms, including women's rooms.
I grew up in NW Iowa (Estherville) and Minneapolis was the big city. Gone are Metropolitan and Memorial Stadiums (Gophers), winter football games with the Purple People Eaters, the North Stars, and the Curtis Hotel.
I'm still a big Twins fan and contrary to Jon D.'s experiences, the HHH Metrodome doesn't hold a candle to the Oakland Colliseum (even after Al Davis ruined it) and ATT Park. At least the Astroturf looks better and it's only 130 home games until the new stadium is built. But it's not the type of Indoor stadium that merits more than a game or so per season. The reverberation inside prevents understanding of the announcements or music and the "baggie" in right field and the circus tent roof are just plain silly. I did enjoy the people watching and had some nice conversations with some neighbouring fans.
Dear Metrodome,
Thank you for existing. You're so.... bad.... that you're good! You truly need to be seen to be believed. You truly are a great football stadium with your noisy and hostile environment. But you could use a little help with the baseball...
My neck hurts after a watching a game under your tent because 90% of the time my seats are oriented away from the baseball action, but it's ok, you do the best you can. My ass hurts so much from those plastic seats, but it's a good hurt!
BUT, in 2006 you still managed to put as many asses in those seats as the White Sox did in their pretty outdoor park with triple the market size, a feat no less remarkable when it's pointed out that 2006 is the year after the White Sux won the World Series...
Bottom line: you're all we have right now and you'll do just fine. Thank you and your early 1980s architecture for helping provide 2 World Series wins in our lifetime. Thank you for providing a place to watch our beloved Twins. And Vikings. And Gophers. And Final Fours. And every single High School State Tournament. You're not the prettiest, but I love you anyway.
Far and away better as a NFL stadium than MLB.
Although I'm kind of impressed that someone thought up the idea for using it for both.
They have foot long hot dogs, a full foot long!
Is this really a Major League Baseball Stadium? Honestly?
This is a big tent with a baseball field inside it. Seats are cheap and it is obvious you get what you pay for. I felt like I was watching baseball in a Waterworld bubble. They have a nice tribute to Kirby Puckett there, but won't watch there again.
This huge cement monstrosity is home to the perennial loser NFL Vikings and the Twins (of which I have not cared about at all since middle school).
It has all the romance of a burn unit.
It is like it was designed to accommodate monster truck pulls exclusively. Oddly enough they are usually in the Metrodome on Sundays Sundays Sundays!
Needless to say, many of the metro teams have been whining about not having a brand new stadium beginning about five years after the construction of this one was complete.
Went to the Metrodome during a business trip and was rather underwhelmed, despite having the best seats I've ever had at a baseball game (front row behind home dugout). Miserably slow game against the Indians. I would have to say the highlight was leaving (in all seriousness) and getting blown out of the building thanks to the positive pressure inside that keeps the dome inflated. Whheeeeee!
And I liked picturing Kirby Puckett making that catch in the outfield in Game 6 of the 1991 World Series.
My first impression of the Hubert H. Humphrey is that it is almost unholy to play baseball games INDOORS!!! Whose idea was that?? Hopefully it wasn't Hubert H. Humphrey himself!
Other than the dome, this place is actually great, for being half a century old...the beer is cheaper than at most other stadiums, which is a +10 stars, but it is definitely a concrete monstrosity. Also, I've never seen so many jean shorts in one place in my entire life, I feel like the Twins must have given them away in some sort of giveaway that day that I was too late for, maybe next time?
I was also told it was much better to be in the stadium for a Vikings game and that that would be when I was thankful for the dome, I'll be back for the football season I guess!
I know many of you Yelpers hold a serious grudge against the dome. In all fairness, I understand your opinions.
I went to the Twins/White Sox game on Memorial day and I have to say that I enjoyed the experience. Everything was incredibly overpriced, but that is bound to happen regardless of where you go. The game was good and I have nothing bad to say about the place.
I especially enjoyed Hunter's homer stealing catch over the center field wall. Good stuff, all in all.
Cement monstrosity...yes
concrete bubble...yes
a good time...yes
I egged the Metrodome last night.
It's nice to have an indoor sports haven in the cold country. But....
Everyone knows this place is an awful spot to watch a ball game. Let's forget the unholiness of playing indoors. It's the sound - the accoustics are so terrible that you can't hear what the announcers are saying and the scoreboards are long and thin so you can't really read anything on them...and I'm just a whippersnapper in my early 30's. I can't imagine what my grandparents think about this place.
In line skating in the winter is pretty nice though.
Getting there on the light rail is also quite nice.
If you like the smell of hot dog water and are no taller than 5 feet.... you'll love this place!
Talk about uncomfortable seats!!!!! ABSOLUTELY NO LEG ROOM! I couldn't believe that baseball is played here. You hear everything that's going on and the crowd is soooooo quiet. I felt like I was watching a golf tournament. I didn't feel the team spirit. We were there to watch the White Sox play against the Twins. And I'll tell you I think we had enough team spirit for the whole stadium. Although we lost :-( I feel the Twins fans didn't show their love for their team.
The fans were nice though and it's nice to know they're going to get a new stadium for their Twins.
I live fairly close to the Metrodome, and have been to one Twins game there.
It is certainly an odd bubble, but I can comprehend wanting an indoor stadium in the dead of winter (not my preference, but I can understand it).
It was not a completely bad experience. Okay, so we had the slowest sandwich maker on the planet, and the game itself was atrocious (I can't fault the dome for that, I don't think), & the mother behind me was paying NO attention to her son as he FELL off of his seat, into my back, neck, & head and THEN smacked the concrete floor... My husband & I asked the kid if HE was okay, at which point the mom finally looks and asks, "What happened?" Ugh.
Neck pain aside, I didn't hate the place. I'd go back for a game (Twins or Vikings), but it's not a place with tremendous amount of charm that I'll hold dear to my heart for years to come. Sorry Metrodome.
I tried to give it ZERO stars, but Yelp wouldn't let me.
Hey......I got an idear....we could make a stadium out of some bags of concrete........put a tarp over it......call the weiners Dome Dogs.......no tailgating, though.....don't want people to have fun.......but they can have a Dome Dog.....
Terrible place to watch college football, terrible place to watch baseball (um, seating in right field is basically nonexistent because of the football configuration). Can't comment on the NFL experience. If this is the only place you've watched baseball it probably seems normal. To me it is not normal. Terrible. F+++++++
In the summer of 2005 I moved here after spending the first 23.5 years of my life going to games at County Stadium/Miller Park (go crew), Lambeau Field (go pack), and Camp Randall (go bucky). I suppose that is all I have to say as all of those venues are topnotch in their respective sports. (Did that sound a little arrogant)?
I have to say the team I feel the most sorry for is the poor Gophers. It has to be so demeaning to play in a stadium that is barely half full except for when they play the Badgers in which case we usually fill up the other half of it. I know "Brew" has all the charms of a snake oil salesmen, but the Dome has to be a hard sell to recruits even for him.
I've lived close to the Metrodome for several years now, and I might be the only person who says this, but I really like it.
You can get cheap seats and still be able to see most of the action.
Here's a tip, buy tickets in the outfield (the HR porch), the cheap seats, or try and snag upper deck seats behind home plate. Those are the best places to sit for a reasonable price. The cheap seats are just that, cheap. 6 dollars is nothing to cry about. Most of us pay that for one beer at the stadium, so I can't complain about it at all.
The big problem with the Metrodome is paying too much for bad seats. There are expensive seats in the lower level and the view really doesn't justify the price in those seats. I know, the Twins have an excuse, they really don't get much revenue from you attending the game besides your ticket price.
If you are vegetarian there are a few options for you out there, you can hit the Sub shop and grab a pizza.
