Very pleasantly surprised, especially after seeing 2.5 stars overall.

I have stayed in very fancy hotels across the United States (paid for by work of course) and some pretty shitty ones for when I just need a bed and a shower for a few hours (you guesses it, paid by yours truly) and I dont understand all these comments about people complaining about the rooms being disgusting. I feel I am qualified to review hotels. If you are paying under a hundred bucks in LA then quit your bitching people. You could swear that half of these naggers grew up in pristine mansions, with a cleaning crew chasing behind them, so that suddenly they are too high class for a smudge on the carpet or a bum sleeping on the sidewalk down the street.
The hotel is in a very nice area, considering you are in downtown LA. It is lodged between the heart of downtown and Chinatown, the area is relatively safe and it is well lit.
The staff was extremely nice and friendly, except for the parking garage guy. I had a small war of words with him, but as far as the hotel people everyone was very friendly.
The room was surprisingly clean and good sized, the AC blew cold, and even the hallways looked nice - clean carpets and walls. Checkout was at noon which is always a plus in my book and the parking is garaged and comes with security ($4 bucks). If you ask me, this is a sweet deal for downtown LA.

We stayed at the Metro Plaza for one day, because of funeral down the street, and it wasn't that bad experience at all.

The parking garage wasn't the roomiest., but the valet that took care of it during the daytime, and he leaves after 7 pm;  so I didn't have to tip anyone after that hour.    I did notice the hotel security was watching a monitor that feeds 20 different areas around the hotel.

The location was pretty neat during the day, and had a lot to do around Chinatown, and Oliviea Street.    This is one hotel that didn't need any restaurants.   As far as traveling around by public transportation from this hotel, I don't think there a better location in Los Angeles. If you're a traveling foodie, this is the perfect place for you!   Philippe, the original is a stone throw away from you, Oliveia Street is across the street, and there's a killer BBQ next to this hotel.    Not to mention, you can hit any Los Angeles restaurant within 30 minutes by Metro rail or Bus

The rooms are not the biggest, but for a night stay it's perfect.   The beds are pretty solid, and  the A/C are a little loud, but works great.
The fitness rooms do smell funky, but I was on a short one day stay, and did want to hit the treadmill.   The free internet doesn't work too well, but the computer in the lobby are pretty fast.

I booked this room through Expeida, and didn't have any trouble checking in an hour early at all.    The guy at the front desk was very cool, and told me where to get some good Char sui bao down the street.

Overall, I liked my stay with them, but I wouldn't stay there for prolong (three days or more) vacation.

Um...the first morning I woke up here...when I woke up to shower, I was greeted by a big, fat cockroach chilling on the bathroom tile floor. Other than that!....The stay was pleasant. LOL. Bring your flip flops!

The hotel provides free wireless internet, but you need to get the code from the front desk. Internet speed is sloooooow. We used it for searching movie times. Anything other than email - forget about it!

In regards to toiletries, the hotel provides Pantene 2-in-1 shampoo and a bar of body soap. So if you are like me...you would bring your own body wash, conditioner, face wash, liquid hand soap, body lotion. The first time I stayed there, I went to the front desk and asked for hair conditioner...the guy gave me more shampoo...and acted like he never heard of conditioner. What? His mom or sister doesn't use it? The bathroom is a good size.

Hotel provides complimentary continental breakfast starting at 6 am. Apples, bananas, white bread, English Muffins, different types of jam, orange juice, apple juice, coffee, tea.

On the floors where the rooms are located - hotel provides ice machine and water dispenser across from elevator. The water dispenser is a nice touch, because I don't buy a lot of bottled water, and I heard the LA water isn't exactly the best tasting.

Hotel room rate is based on double occupancy. There is an additional cost if you have more than two people staying in your room.

Hotel doesn't smell like anything, other than Subway on first floor baking their fresh bread.

They charge for parking and the garage is small, so it's possible you could get parked in, so let the attendant know when you plan on getting your car.

The gas station across the street is soooo expensive! Compared to other gas stations I passed on the way to SGV, this one costs 20-40 cents per gallon more.

The hotel is in a good location, almost across the street to Olivera Street and Union Station. Near Metro. Located on the outskirts of Chinatown. I'd stay here again, because I heard the hotels within Chinatown are terrible and dirty. This one is pretty clean, if you overlook the cockroach visitor. :)

If I could give this hotel zero stars than thats what they would get.

This hotel is DISGUSTING.  As soon as I walked into the room it smelled muggy and like crap.  I decided to air out and that didn't do much.  I couldn't take the odor so decided to check out and find another place.  I reported the smell to the front desk and they could care less.

AVOID THIS HOTEL AT ALL COSTS. IT'S DISGUSTING!!!!

For the location and the price, this place is great.

    Pro:

    1) 5 min. walk to Union Station!

    2) or a 10 min. walk to men's central jail (if that's your thing);

    3) Above average on cleanliness and "new-ness."

    4) Large bathroom, HBO on TV (but not many other channels).

    Con:

    1) Yes, it does smell like Subway, but who doesn't like Subway?

    2) Parking is very cramped but the attendant helps you park.

    3) Forget about using the wi-fi for streaming video, e-mail and text speeds only.

    Misc:

    1) $4 for parking per night;

    2) Continental breakfast but you can find much better options right next door.

I booked rooms for my employees to stay here. It's close to our venue and we needed two rooms, total of six paid nights, over a weekend. You'd think a hotel would give better service than this one did.

I booked the rooms online a week ahead of time, only to learn by email sent in the middle of the night, the first night of the reservation, that the card wasn't charged, and that our guys had to pay for the room out of their own pockets. The card I used to purchase the room wasn't evidently used to PURCHASE THE ROOM.

When I rang in the morning, the hotel person, whose name I never got, informed me that it was their policy, and that if I wanted to actually *pay* for the rooms, that I would have to SEND A LETTER telling them so. The guy spent five minutes telling me how he informed me of this issue (when? When would this have happened?). He insisted, berated and talked over my saying I had never been informed of this letter, and please send it.

I sent in the authorization after they sent me their form letter of authorization, and called to confirm. The same guy was very very rude to me, again insisted he told me this, because he remembered making my reservation on the phone, certainly, yes he remembered me. I said no, I booked online, we never spoke before this morning. The guy is either on drugs or is shadier than I even think.

This, after they booked me an extra room that I did not request, and had to cancel.
This is the crappy Yelp review I promised whats-his-name, and I will never ever book there again. I recommend you follow suit.

Oh, and the last thing? They don't have a manager working on Fridays. Or at least that's what whats-his-name tells me. ZERO stars, Metro Plaza.

I've been staying at this place ever since it first opened, 20+ years ago as I recall. It's beginning to show it's age (as evidenced by the worn/soiled carpets in particular!) but it's still a comfortable place to stay and extremely convenient if you're coming in by train (Amtrak, Metrolink, Metrorail). It's less than a 10 minute walk to Union Station.  The rates are relatively low for LA (about $100 including taxes) so it's a pretty good value too.

The area around the hotel is completely safe by day and into the early evening but  I'd be more careful or maybe avoid it altogether in the later hours. It's near the county jail and an increasing number of homeless people now frequent the Union Station area. I've never had a problem in the area at any hours but  a little caution is always warranted in such environments.

I've never noticed any smell others have reported from the next door Subway shop on any of my stays here. The complimentary continental style breakfast (bagels, muffins, donuts, cereal, fruit, juice, coffee) is adequate. TV reception leaves something to be desired. Most of the local LA channels (half of them in foreign languages!) and a very few cable/satellite channels like CNN and ESPN, below average selection for hotels nowadays. Thank God they at least give you HBO! They need to upgrade to flat screen sets and improved cable or satellite service. The night desk dude could use a refresher course in charm school but the rest of staff is friendly, never had any problems with them or management.

Since I've stayed here so many times I obviously like the place and I'm sure I'll be staying here again. It's biggest advantage remains it's proximity to Union Station where you can get subway/light rail/Amtrak connections to most of the greater LA area, Southern California and the rest of country.

I agree with David G.  The night management did not know what they were doing.  We stayed in this hotel due to need and location.   Location was good, but everything else was bad.  Checked out early and they did not record my checkout, so I could not get a refund.
Also, beds were soft, rooms were scummy.

I love the gracious, accommodating attitude of the staff at this hotel. I have held three of my Cuddle Parties here (Cuddle Party is a workshop on boundaries and communication that centers around healthy, non-sexual touch) and each time they have been willing to let me in to set up a little earlier than the check-in time; they have directed my workshops guests to my room at my request, and in general they have just been friendly, helpful and willing to go the extra mile. Overall, their customer service is excellent.

This is not a luxury vacation hotel, but it is clean, comfortable, well maintained, and the price is reasonable. If you need an inexpensive hotel for business purposes, I highly recommend this one.

Extremely rude manager. Called me a liar repeatedly and accused me of being racist towards the Chinese. This lady was ridiculous.

Had to have my cell-phone records faxed in just to get her to stop calling me a liar.

In the midst of the argument I caught her in lies several times, but not once did I cut her off and yell "you lie! you lie!" as she did to me. After I called her out on the lies she just set herself up for, she got embarassed and began saying that I was a racist, and blaming her ignorance on my lack of understanding of the Chinese-American culture.. C'mon lady, please...

Save yourself the time, sleep on the sidewalk before you step foot in this hell-hole.

If I could, I would give this place 3 and a half stars. This place wasn't so bad. The customer service I received was great. Even before I got there, they had no problem changing my reservation date the day before. The person who answered the phone was clear and helpful.

As soon as I pulled into their parking garage the next day, someone was there to direct me to an open spot. Checking in was fast, the guy up front even mentioned to me about their breakfast before I went up. My room was pleasant, clean and stocked. They also gave me no problems providing me a password to their wi-fi, so that I can have internet access to my laptop.

The fan/ac was a bit noisy but it was better to deal with that than the noise from all the traffic outside. The beds aren't the best but since I only needed to stay in town for night, I just made the most out of it, especially for the price.

I stay here 3 times a week for work. Its not bad. The bed are a bit uncomfortable but when ur tired they'll do. It does reek of subway sandwich bread only because there's a subway sandwich right nxt door. Olvera street is right across and you can shop for trinkets, have an amazing margarita and even more amazing mexican food. Also chinatown is right in back. Recommend yang chows for lunch its awesome. Los Angeles Union station is within walking distance and all red line, gold line and blue lines as well as amtrak are there also. All in all a nice place w free breakfast before 9 that has cereals, all kinds of breads, some pastries, juice/coffee, and fruit.

The hotel is in need of some upkeep. Only one of the two elevators was working. The windows were all smudged. The ice maker in the hallway was very noisy. The place smelled like Subway sandwiches since there is a Subway franchise next to the hotel. The hotel hallways were very hot, but the A/C in the room worked pretty well. The beds, bed sheets and pillows were not comfortable. Only a limited number of basic TV channels so I could only watch CNN, ESPN and TNN. The hotel desk clerk was very nice when we checked in. I do not intend to stay in this hotel again.

Worst hotel I've ever been in my life.  Rude workers, lazy and absolutely disrespectful.  The cleaning servicer did not leave any towels after cleaning the room and when I called for towels to be brought up, it took 3 hours.
I will never return to that hotel ever again, beware of that place.

WOW! Looks like someone needs to simmah down don't ya think? I stayed in this hotel not by choice but because it was the hotel with the better reviews on Trip Adviser and fit my budget. In Feb I had to make an emergency trip down to LA due to my grandma's passing. Check in was super easy and fast. I was up on the upper floor and found the elevator working well, lobby clean as well as the hallway. Upon entering my room I found it very clean and well stocked with towels and bath stuff. This hotel is located in downtown LA/Chinatown and even though the area is being cleaned up I wouldn't advise young ladies to walk around too late alone. I think it could get a bit dicey in the area. Across the street there is a Chevron and downstairs outside there is a Mexican market type place which was nice. I walked through there on my way to the buses and it took me back to being in Mexico going through the shops down there. Also downstairs there is a Subway and some ma and pa eatin places. Unfort due to my sched with family I couldn't partake in the yumminess that was calling for me. So over all if you are staying for a couple days and driving this is an alright hotel. I'd req for just about anyone.
