Glad to see Metro come to Montclair this is the kind of place we need, lets support it. The wife (tw) and i needed something more than the basic fare but didnt want a whole big, rich dinner to-do.

We share the tuna tartare which was excellent, nice presentation and good quality. I had the chopped salad which was very good with and excellent buttermilk-blue dressing and tw had gnocchi which she loved.

I had a good dry rose and tw had a glass of Bellecart champagne, these were reasonably priced and good pours.

We topped it off with a caramel pot de creme which was a nice treat and well done.

Metro isnt breaking any new ground with their food but it is certainly a notch above the other offerings in the Village.

Service was attentive and friendly, we have already been back once and will be back again.

they are beer and wine right now but a full-bar is on the way.

I just had lunch here and the bill came to $8.23, or so it said on the cash display.  The clerk said "$8.25 please."

I pointed out that the bill was for $8.23, she responded that "she rounded it up."

WTF?!?!?!  Round it up in _my_ favor, not yours.  Round it up for me, it's a customer-centric convenience, round it up for you, it's called STEALING.

I know it's only $.02, but if she's rounding everyone up by two or three cents, that's hundreds of dollars a month.

Nice individually brewed one cup at a time coffee (not good if you're in a sbux hurry). Other than that unmemorable. It would be nice if they made the atmo cozier inside so you were more inclined to linger a la true coffeehaus style.

Certainly not worth a detour but good if you need a calmer place than the nearby chain cafes.

Peach bruschetta...wooooowwwww.  I've come here twice now for a post-hike (usually Joaquin Miller) fill-up on this special.  I'll be sad when summer ends and they no longer have it.

Metro also serves beer on tap and excellent iced tea.  The lunch menu is a little pricey for a cafe, but the food is better than you'd expect.  I have no strong opinion about the ambiance - it's pretty simple, and tables are spread out so that there's a lot of floor space without much going on.  Could be a pro or a con.

I like this new addition to Montclair.  It's almost, sorta, nearly hip.  For Montclair.

I stopped in here early on a Saturday morning hoping for a cup of coffee from a non-chain cafe. I found myself to be the only customer in the place, but I think they'd just opened for the day.

I had a cup of drip coffee, I think it was Mocha Java, and it was definitely the best cup of coffee I ever had. I am not a coffee snob, and I regularly put a little milk and sugar in my coffee. I did this to my Metro coffee, and then realized after tasting the creamy, smooth liquid that I could have done without both. And I NEVER drink coffee without sugar or milk.

I rarely pay for coffee away from home, but when I do it again, I hope it's from Metro.

Welcome to the most pleasant cafe to make a drug deal. No, that would be bad of you, but I really do think that this eatery has the making of crime movie scene. It's nestled in the Montclair Village neighborhood and everything seems so swell there. You can find kids walking through the farmers' market, couples with their dogs and baby strollers, and old folks talking to each other about the goings-ons of the day. One might forget that they're in Oakland, and the cafe is a few blocks away from the parking lot - which is free on Sundays, good for them. That's when you show up in your little Honda civic, meet up at the Metro cafe, and push your bag of bootleg dvds to the mysterious guy across the table. I hope you can live with yourself.

In other news, the food is pretty good for a breakfast or lunch. My girlfriend ordered the turkey club and I ordered a bagel sandwich with ham and cheese. Low and behold, they got my order wrong and got me a salmon and cheese bagel sandwich. I had already taken a bite and didn't want to fight the chef. It wasn't bad anyway. Fish is good for your right? The coffee there is strong, and rich. I just might go back for that some day.

As a huge fan of Metro Lafayette, I was really stoked to try out the brand new Mini Metro in Montclair.  My girlfriends and I went on their second day since opening, and we had a fabulous lunch.  Jen loved her scrumptious eggplant panini, Sarah stayed healthy with the veggie-licious diced summer vegetable salad, and I dug into a pork loin panini with cheddar and bacon (decadent much?). And throughout the meal, we drifted back to the savory marinated olives. The only thing that would have made it better would have been if the super-friendly and accommodating staff had more time to chat with us. But we understood--they have a job to do.
The decor is hip and understated. The menu has something for every taste bud. And the staff rocks (they get extra props for the many coffee refills I often require). Can't wait to return.

Just had lunch there; the place is quite small but nice. service was excellent, a little on the pricey side.  I ordered a ceasar salad, the cheapest item on the menu, and it was $10. Not what I call a bargain, but was quite delicious. This is not a burger and fry kind of place as the menu is quite exquisite

Such a great little place in the village. With notoriously bad food in Montclair, this was a nice departure. While the menu is quite limited, I value the quality of the food served rather than a huge crappy menu found at other restaurants in the area. I had a yummy smoked salmon plate and the man had a pastrami panini - it was perfectly toasted, not greasy, and served with some tasty green. The iced mocha was really good as well. This is a cute little place to visit if you are looking for some tasty grub. I only wish they had some appetizer plate to snack on when enjoying the wine.

Coffee is fine. But 5 bucks for gloppy oatmeal?? Limited menu. Prices will keep me from coming back for lunch. They are new, and hopefully they will expand their offerings, but in the meantime there are well established, appropriately priced options.

    Its really not that special.

Yes they make your coffee and drinks on the spot, there's not that much selection.

Speaking of which, even their sandwich selection isn't that great. It's ok for 6 sandwiches in total! Salads? Only 4. Breakfast!? Not much selection there.

Yes they've just opened but they would do better with a bigger selection or even unique play-off salads and sandwiches they serve. It needs something else in their menu besides being a glorified coffee shop to stand out.

Not sure why it says this is closed--just ate there last week, and when I drove by the other day, it looked open to me.   The duck confit spring rolls are delicious, as were the scallops and the fish stew.  Really happy to have this place in the village.  They are in the process of getting a full liquor license, but already have a nice wine list.   They still have a "cafe kitchen," hence the somewhat limited menu.  But they have plans to build out a larger kitchen.  Can't wait!

Went here today to meet a friend.  I had a cafe latte, which was about ordinary.  My sister had an Italian soda, which she said was good in that the syrup stayed well-mixed in the drink, rather than settling to the bottom, which is frequently her experience.  The service was friendly and the ambiance a nice coffee house vibe.  They apparently serve breakfast, sandwiches, and salads, which I will try next time!

This bar is in a great location, it has great space, but for whatever reason, the vibe has never been right for me going to this bar. It's kind of dead and there's no women there, ever. I know it's a gay bar, but still.

Previously operating as a coffee house, Metro Cafe & Bar, as of Tuesday July 13th, is now Metro Montclair. You'll now find a casual elegant eatery that offers a limited menu of french and italian-inspired sandwiches, salads, appetizers, desserts, and wines.

Still trying to make the transition from coffee house to eatery, Metro Montclair is still working out the kinks in service and ambiance. For example, the silverware came after the dishes arrived. However, the servers did their best and were attentive. I trust they will have everything worked out in a few days.

We had the sandwiches, which were delicious, especially the pork loin panini. The combinations of flavors were simple, refined, and the bread toasted to perfection. Everyone in my lunch party had nothing but good things to say about their dishes.

With sandwiches, you are given a choice between fresh greens or vegetable chips. The fresh greens, which were provided in abundance, had a delightful light-oil dressing, with a hint of olive flavor. The vegetable chips were unique and delicious, plus came with a dipping sauce that can be described as a chipotle mayonnaise. We found that adding the chipotle mayonnaise to the pork loin panini highlighted and accented its flavor. I would suggest to the owner that they put the sauce on the panini to knock it out of the park.

The ambiance of the eatery was still fairly limited... painted in cold gray with round tables for two, more akin to a coffee shop than restaurant. Adding rectangle covers to the tables would allow four people to sit "together."

In summary, we were very impressed with the food and presentation and plan to return to Metro Montclair soon.

I'm an expresso fan.  Given the machines used in today's world  it's difficult not to get a decent cup (if using acceptable beans).  However, given that they serve the brew in a "real" cup results in an excellent rating.   Granted that the place is not often crowded, but that allows you a few minutes of peace with and expresso and the paper.

I can't believe this place is closed now. I ate here about a month ago and had the pork sandwich with sweet potato vegetable chips. It has a very quiet atmosphere in the heart of Montclair. It seemed pretty slow during lunch hours; I think the place is fairly new because the manager notified me that the reason he could not make my favorite shirly temple drink was because they were still building their bar. I would return here if they were still open.

This place is pretty good, esp jus for a lunch hour...I had the tuna salad sandwich, which i liked how they put a whole hard-boiled egg in it (i love egg in my tuna salad) and i had the chinese chicken salad which i really enjoyed. The price is a little higher than youd expect to pay for a salad (which I think was about 9.50) and I forgot how much the sandwich was, but was pretty good, id prolly go back but only bc I work down the street.

I have anxiously been awaiting the opening of the metro...well worth the wait.   Everything, service included, was great.  The Greek platter (oddly part of the salad menu) was awesome...I had always been fond of the saying, "Cucumber should be well sliced, dressed with pepper and vinegar, and then thrown out," ...not anymore though.  The cucumber topped with yogurt dressing was yummmmmy. The shrimp bisque was smokey and flavorful, straight out of A'Cote...an incredible texture and a beguiling flavor.

Aside from that, the drinks have all been great.  I have tried the latte, two wines and two beers...now that it is apparent that I have a bit of a drinking problem, I hope you venture into Metro...and yes, unlike many places in Montclair, it's open until reallllly late: 9:00p.m. (equivalent to 5 am in NY).

Not sure why this say's it is closed, but I was there for lunch today.  I was very happy with my chicken salad sandwich on Acme bread with the apple slaw.  My friend had the crab sandwich, and was just as happy.  I am excited to have a place with fresh, light, good ingredients.  I would highly recommend both sandwiches, and I will go back to try additional menu items.

Metro recently changed from a coffee bar to a French/small plates/wine and beer place -- so some of the reviews here are reviewing the former incarnation.  This is now just like Metro Lafayette, and I don't doubt it will soon be as popular!  The food is tasty and every glass of wine I have tried has been quite nice.  The service has also been very friendly and attentive. Metro has become one of my favorite places in Montclair -- the neighborhood needed a spot like this!
