The best Tacos Al Pastor I've EVER HAD.
I also really enjoyed the tongue (lengua) taco. -
Review from Glenn O.
I've had this Taqueria on my 'try' list for a while, but never got around to driving here. Well, a co-worker wanted to go and since it was Friday, we went. I had the Carne Asada tacos which were very tasty. Slightly crispy on the outside of the meat and soft and flavorful, maybe a tad too much salt, but that would be nit picking. It comes with the typical 2 corn tortillas that are slightly fried, cilantro, onions and a little salsa.
They bring two types of salsas to your table, red and a green tomatillo which you can add to the tacos for additional flavor. They are not spicy hot, on the mild side but did have some good flavor.
The Horchata is good too, not overly sweet...
A small bowl of chips arrives at your table with some red sauce. I wasn't very impressed with this sauce, the chips are better with the salsa's that they bring to your table with your meal.
As others have mentioned, parking is limited and there is like 4 or 5 tables inside... They BBQ on Thursday to Sunday after 4:30pm.
Going to try other items on the menu as I was eyeing other plates which looked really good. Family owned which keeps consistency in the cooking which is always a good thing. The place is a 'dive', so if your into ambiance, you may want to pass on this place. If your into food and like Taqueria's, try'em out. -

Delicious cheap food. 'nuff said?
You can't go wrong here. I ate sudadero taco and carne asada alambres and a large jamaica... Yum. I am looking forward to coming back again, and again, and again... -

Thursday night at Metro has become a tradition for my wife and I. We meet and discuss the trials and tribulations of our day while noshing on the best Tacos Al Pastor I have ever had. We have been going for years now and all I can say to sum this up is just go once. Give it a try on a Thursday night... grab a taco al pastor fresh off the spit and see if it doesn't become a tradition for you. I dare you!

We just tried the tacos here since we've been reading how good they are. The place is in the middle of the hood and a real hole in the wall, which I love. To me, it's like finding a treasure if the food is good.
We tried a bunch of the tacos:
Chiccarones (sp?) - which was pretty tasty. The meat was seasoned and had a good flavor--my favorite of the ones we tried.
Brisket: Pretty dry-didn't do a thing for me.
Chicken-had a smoky flavor with lots of red sauce-not bad.
Al Pastor-pretty good but not the best I've ever had. Maybe we didn't get the ones right off the spit. I don't know, but these were pretty mediocre considering the reviews I've read.
We also tried the cheese quesadilla and it was really good. Even my son who doesn't like cheese really liked the quesadillas here.
All in all, not bad but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again. -

One of the most authentic Mexican places in San Jose. Almost feels like a Rosarito Taco Shop. Get the Pastor Tacos or Asada Tacos (Yumm!). My wife's favorite is the Flautas. The mexican rice is incredible. A little rough around the edges but well worth it. Only reason is didn't get 5 starts is the service can be SLOW. The two servers are overwhelmed during busy times. Do not go if you are in a rush!

Alright, here's the deal: slow down as you approach the restaurant. If you see a vertical spit and cooks preparing food under the awning on the side of the restaurant, then it's worth stopping here. Like many places, tacos al pastor fresh off the spit makes all the difference. I can't believe this is the same restaurant that merited only two stars from me in a previous review. It's like night and day the second time around, and it's much, much better. Strongly recommended, but only if you observe both the cooks and a vertical spit outside.
If the tacos were bigger, this would be a five-star establishment.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I did a yelp search while in San Jose and found Metro Balderas near my hotel. Taking a tip from fellow Yelpers I tried the Tacos Al Pastor. I'm glad I did, very very good. Not the best I've had but very good, and and while the tacos were small plenty of filling and priced well at $1.65 each made up for it. Four tacos made the perfect lunch. I will be back! Free homemade chips and salsa are a bonus.

I got to say the best "Al Pastor Tacos" around here, it does not get better than this for this kind of tacos. The Only dwn side to this restaurant is that its too small and the restrooms are Right There.
Food Is Great, Huaraches are also good. -

Shame on me. (*Head hung with shame).
I have lived in the neighborhood for over 5 years and yes, I have frequented Metro Balderas from time to time. Usually when the bf and I are too lazy to cook or when I get a hankerin' for a tasty taco or quesadilla. It was always good and the staff was courteous. But I was always curious about the huge crowds on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night. (That is, when that huge spit is spinning around). We always wanted to try the Al Pastor (aka...spinning meat) but just never seemed to make it at the times they were serving it. That is, until this past weekend.
The BF ordered 4 of the Tacos Al Pastor for us to sample. Eh, sure the bag smelled good but I just chopped it up to fresh grilled protein and cilantro. One bite later and I was like "HOLY CANOLE!!!! " This hands down, is the best taco I have EVER eaten in my life. (Even compared to the tacos in my old neighborhood of LA). The meat is so darn flavorful...extremely complex with the balance of savory and spice. As I write this I am banging my head on the desk (clunk-clunk) for having wasted 5+ years of not eating the amazing Al Pastor.
Note to y'all, parking is horrible at this place and patrons tend to pull up their cars in all shapes and fashion just to squeeze in. I used to be somewhat annoyed when they did this because it would block the streets when we were trying to drive by. Now I realize I was just a hater.....for the Al Pastor makes people do some craaaazzzyyy things. :)
I would say 3.5 stars for the rest of their menu...but the Al Pastor bumps them up to a 5!Listed in: South Bay--It tastes SO GOOD!!, Mom and Pop!

I went to Metro Balderas on a recommendation from a coworker and loved it. To put it shortly: this is the type of taco place I have been looking for since I moved to San Jose in 2001. They have great tacos, tortas, and other authentic Mexican food that is genuinely authentic; it's definitely not your typical downtown burrito/taco joint.
Since I moved from LA, I have been searching for a taco place that 1. serves tripas (intestines) and 2. makes them well. Intestines are tough to cook properly as they easily get tough and/or chewy or hard. Finding a place that serves that type of meat is difficult in itself (Lorena's serves it but butchers it) but Metro Balderas also cooks it exquisitely. The fact that they serve a hard to find, typical Mexican cut of meat and cook it well says a lot about this place.
Overall, the place is a hole and has very little seating and very little parking. It gets busy on weekends because that's when they bust out the Al Pastor rotisserie (it's big stake with a lot of meat impaled on it and it rotates on a rotisserie all day). If they have it, definitely get at least one taco of al pastor, although you'll be wishing you got more once you eat it. I had the al pastor, carne asada and tripas, all very good.
Don't let the exterior discourage you, Metro Balderas has friendly staff and excellent food.Listed in: Hidden Gems

Best mexican food in the Bay Area. Period. Okay except maybe La Palmera in SF but this place you can actually sit down!
This reminds me of the tacos I used to have en el D.F. The shittier a place is, the more likely the tacos are good and that's all that really matters.
But seriously, get over the fact that its not nice, spacious and in a safe area and get some tacos al pastor! -

Shady on looks: YES
Shady on food: NO
It's a worn down building on the corner of two busy streets wire bars on the windows in a ghetto neighborhood. The inside is a fugly painted yellow color with brown booths and brown tables. A 32" tv mounted up on the wall provided loud mexican drama, as there were men and women crying and shouting on TV, while I sat there. The bathroom was a mini sink with a lopsided toilet, a window with blue boards nailed across it with blue bars to match the boards. Very prison like. Better get out of there quick....starting to feel the walls close in on me. To turn on the light in the bathroom, you have to switch it ever so slightly back and forth before it flickers for a sec then comes on. It takes a while, but you just have to flick it back and forth with your wrist. I had no problems finding parking on Tues night at 6:30pm.
The waitress was all smiles. I ordered the famed, much reviewed tripe and al pastor tacos. Num num num.......oh delicious. Both had lots of flavor, and tidbits of smoky crunchy bits of fat...maybe burnt pieces? Not exactly the most healthy thing, but it was ever so delicious. It made it taste much better, with a little crunch. It came with a small bag of chips, couple of slices of lime, smoky hot sauce and red hot sauce. I LOVED how these tacos were a thicker taco, so it held up the ingredients. It didn't fall or crack apart in conspicious places, so you had to end up eating it w/your fingers or a fork.
They had a wide range of foods on their menu, everything ranging from breakfast to tortas to enchiladas to soups.
Num num num......ohh...*sigh* I am in taco heaven. -

Oh yeah, hit up this place just before Pley to get a little grub on. Does it look that shady, or I am I just used to it? I parked in the front (yeah parking spots are a bit tight) and there were a couple parties on different corners of the neighborhood (just people hanging out on the lawn.)
Super friendly ladies at the counter, didn't have to order in Spanish, but everyone else in there was fluent. Delicious quesadilla with a kick and made on an awesome tortilla. Free fresh chips and salsa (yes the green sauce on the table is great for a little more spice)
Space inside was tight, but managed to find a table since it was a little chilly at night. Felt totally at ease.Listed in: San Jo

You can not get anymore Mexican than this.... taquero outside, the al pastor rotisserie going around and around, a bright yellow building with three tables inside and the typical guy cooking in the back singing "por una mujer casda" (popular Mexican song) just like back home... home sweet home!
My boss lady had been recommending this place for a while, a few months later a friend also told me I had to try the Al Pastor tacos from Metro Balderas. After a week of late nights at the library I needed to reward myself with something good and what better than some taquitos.
This location is hidden and just like Katherine L. said "shady" there is no parking and there is a liquor store right next to the taqueria. (hint hint after the tacos there is nothing like a nice Don Julio drink with lime and salt =)
The minute I got out of my car I smelled the al pastor meat.... oh boy at that point I got excited! To be honest I didn't even look at the menu I just ordered 3 al pastor tacos... a few minutes later out came my tacos.... there was one thing I forgot to ask for... I don't like my tortillas dipped in oil ahtough they do taste better. Oh well.. too late. These are the second best al pastor tacos I have had in san jose! By far!!! I hear they only have al pastor tacos Thurs-Sun.
I think it's safe to say this is the best al pastor tacos in town! It's a must try! -

Stopped by here on a early Thursday evening to grab a quick bite to eat. I was a little thrown off my the sketchy looks of the place, so instead of parking into the one space left (there's only 5 spaces!), I drove past it and busted a U.
I didn't know there were menus, so I just ordered 2 tacos al pastor. 4 tables total inside, and several outside, but the inside was pretty cramped.
Ordered to-go, but I started eating as I was driving. These are AMAZING tacos! It packs such a punch of flavor in each bite that I found myself savoring every single bite. I'm not sure why, but I tasted cinnamon, as though there was a faint hint of horchata in each bite. Weird, I know...but it might just be me.
2 tacos al pastor = $3.17 incl tax.
I'll definitely be back. Most likely to dine in for free chips and salsa! And, to try the tacos with the green salsa instead of the red salsa next time.

What to know:
--There are TWO "metro balderas" locations, for those that are not aware. One on almaden [which is the original location & where they have the "al pastor" tacos outside] & the newer one is on 1st and virginia [which serves "horchata bcuz the other spot doesn't]
--Free chips and salsa (if you want food to-go, ask for some to take with you)
--The original location is VERYYY small. Only a few 4person tables inside & few tables outside. Newer location is "roomier" and have booth-like seatIng (which I prefer).
--Only like 5 parking spaces are available (for liquor store & eatery to share) and M.B.#2 has about 6, but isn't on an "as" busy street or narrow street as the original place.
--For ppl who haven't tried "real/authentic" mexican-made/prepared food, you need to try it out sometime. (NOTE: AQUI's & TACO BELL DO NOT COUNT!)
--Prices are very affordable! TRIPLE KUDOS!
--M.B.#2 has a tv and bar area w/ stools, whereas M.B.#1 is too small to even have a bar.
--M.B.#1 looks shady, intimidating, ghetto, ugly, dirty & wack based on its appearance, BUTTTT if you wanna taste some good sh*t, take food to-go at least.
--M.B.#2's appearance is a little more appealing since its not as
intimidating..btw, the custom-made rock carved counter is fukn badass, for those that have not seen it!
--Okay, on to food...what I like are as follows:
pambazos, huaraches, alambres, sopes, tortas, horchata (agua fresca) and nachos (which are not listed on the menu, but were presented to me by a friend and are bommbbb) and I honestly rarely eat tacos, burritos, enchiladas and all the "typical/mainstream" mexican foods..and FYI, i am mexican. not to say they are not good, I just grew up with it a lot & prefer more interesting plates that are not normally made from home & are normally only found on menus in MEXICO.
NOTE: I have gone about a dozen or more times and all have been after 3pm.
**Whenever i go again, I will take a pic of the food to share w/ others**
All in all, chefs are talented and know how to MOS DEF hit those taste buds =] -

AUTHENTIC! I lived in Mexico City for 4 months and this is THE ONLY place in the Bay area that I have been able to find true tacos de pastor, they are sooo yummy! You can order them anytime, but they are best on the weekends when the meat is prepared the traditional way, on a spit. Also the tostada de tinga is amazing. The area is a little scary, but go ahead, venture out and get yourself some traditional D.F. food!

Que Rico! Metro Balderas is NOT your basic taco and burrito joint--they have so much more to offer. Alambres (meat, onions, peppers, bacon, all grilled, on a tortilla, with a hot layer of cheese on top) a ton of dishes with Nopales (yummy cactus) and Pambazo just to name a few.
Born and raised in Hayward I've only been accustomed to food from cities like Guadalajara, Zacatecas etc. and I think I only have one friend from DF. Why didn't anyone tell me Mexico City was eating so damn good!?
This quaint little joint is tiny but serves up good eats. My friends had the Alambres and they were absolutely delicious. I had the mouthwatering Pambazo made from special bread dipped in red guajillo sauce, filled with potatoes and chorizo, shredded lettuce, salsa, crema and queso fresco. It took a while to get this order through, but it was worth the wait. Service is great and on a Sunday afternoon the outdoor seating is perfect. And after your delicious meal, you can check out the latest bootleg videos from the vendors outside! -

This place is a total hole-in-the-wall, but OMG they have authentic tacos al pastor! We bring friends here to get a taste of what they have missed by never visiting el DF. Choriqueso (queso fundido con chorizo), sopes, tacos al pastor (particularly on the weekends)...Yummy!!!
Warning: this is not light food, even though most things are fairly small bites. Definitely come here with a craving for a bit of grease, as well as a friend who speaks Spanish if you do not. Ask for the jarrito de tamarindo if you have never had tamarind soda before! -

Wow this place was just amazing. 3 of my friends brought me here, it's totally a hole in the wall, really small, but the food is more than amazing. I ordered 2 taco's with Carne Asada. They're small but amazing. I ordered a coke and was surprised that it's the glass bottle coke with real sugar, as opposed to the high fructose corn syrup we get. The meal was amazing, it's not expensive at all and get's pretty busy at night. I highly recommend this place to anyone!

Review from Thomas S.
San Jose, CA
To me there are a few "Perfect Foods". Foods that are the perfect combination of the right ingredients that in the hands of a skilled cook, not only taste good, but make you feel good. Ice cream tastes good, but I never feel good after eating it. I feel sticky and slightly nausiated and almost hungover (I totally can relate to Spongebob).
No so with the glorious Taco. Tacos are a Perfect Food; humble yet profoundly delicious. If confined to a desert island and I could choose one food vendor to patronize until I finally succumbed to delusional madness and death from rabid monkey bites, it would be a taqueria. Preferably Rico's Tacos, but that's another review.
There are three very important main components of a taco: Tortilla, Meat and Salsa. Onions & Cilantro are the same everywhere you go and if you get Radishes, Grilled Onions or Lemons or Limes with yours those are all secondary, perhaps even tertiary.
Here the tortillas are not house made, but they are warm, soft, very fresh and not at all greasy. The tripas here is in the top two contenders for the best I've ever eaten anywhere, much less in SJ. The al pastor is excellent too, but I've had a lot of good al pastor, getting really good tripas even in California is no mean feat. The lengua is also reccomended; tender, juicy and flavorful. The only thing that keeps them from rivaling Rico's is the salsa. It's good, but nothing special. Even so, they pickle their own jalapenos which is great, there's plenty of Jarritos (including my favorite, tamarindo) and personally I didn't think there was any excessive grease as some reviewers claim.
So far, this is the taqueria to beat in SJ. -

After a 26 over par day at the course, I asked my friend and fellow Yelper, Arthur G., to take me to a Mexican joint he was raving about.
Arriving at the place, i didn't know where I was at. We were at a tiny hole in the wall in the middle of the cutty cut cuts of San Jose. We entered through a door, into a super hot, extremely tiny place. Got our orders and sat outside where it was much more enjoyable.
We sat right next to the al pastor machine and viewed glory spinning and cooking on that rod, which I had ordered three of the al pastor tacos and a side of rice.
The tacos went as quickly as they came. Maybe I should have savored them more. I definitely give myself more chances to do so. -
Review from Allen C.
San Jose, CA
One of the BEST authentic Mexico City (El D.F. as it's called in mexico) food out there. So most people say "authentic", but if you are serving pinto beans and rice, with every meal, then more than likely it's not authentic. I should know, I was born there.
The best time to go is in the weekends later in the day. They serve tacos outside and it's sooo freaking good. Order some tacos "al pastor". If you can, get an order of Mexican green onions and radishes... The tortas are good, and the tostadas are great.
The only drawback about this place is that it can get packed, specially on the weekend. Sometimes it's hard to find parking and you might have to stand outside for a few minutes in order for you to get a place to sit. -

Yelp has never failed me until now. This place was rated 4 stars and reviews sounded good so I gave it a try. My tacos were nasty and the meat was gristly. The tacos were a grayish color and lacked flavor. The chips tasted like they were bought at Costco. Also if you are picky about hygiene then do not eat here. There was HAIR everywhere!! On our tacos, salsa, and chips. I also think they restroom doubles as a supply closet. Then to make it worse I saw the cook touch the handle for the walk in fridge and not wash their hands. I ended up getting sick from this place (I'll spare you the details). Next time I'll just drive the extra 5 minutes and head over to ESSJ!

This place is totally rockin on Sat night. They've got an al pastor carver and the lines for seats and take out are long. The other bonus? They have Mexico CIty DF style food. The torta cubana was solid. I think a lot of people are fearful of the area at night but I dont think there's much to worry about. Lots of families enjoying good quality food for good cheap prices.

If you're used to standard taqueria kind of food, Metro Balderas is a good opportunity to try something a little different and very good. Some of their food, like alambres or pambazos, aren't on a lot of menus around here. And even their versions of some of the usual stuff (quesadillas, etc.) are interestingly different. Of course, as everyone else has said, the al pastor tacos (on the weekends) are the earthly incarnation of Mexcellence. Don't come here without ordering them. The only drawback is the parking lot, which is a small, unfunny joke.

I'm giving this place 5 stars because this tacos r soooo tasty n yummy. I was a bit skeptical because a lot of non-mexican tend to rate any mexican restaurant like "da bomb" or really good places have poor ratings. So If u want true, mexican tacos, this is the place to go to. Las salsas r great, n i will come back for more. I know it doesn't have the greatest architecture, but food is worth that. It gives u the true mexican-taco atmosphere.

This Mexican joint is around the corner from my house so I go there a lot. The prices are inexpensive. $3.75 for a regular brrito and $1.35 for the tacos. The carne asada burritos and al pastor tacos are awesome. Some evenings they cook the al pastor outside on some sort of spit I also recommend the tortas. The only problems are that burritos are on the small side & the cashiers are either rude or busy. Besides that I highly recommend it.

This is one of the few reviews that I will post in Yelp. I have to admit that after I came to US I have never had such a good Mexican meal, even comparable to the quality of Mexico City.
Try Alambres, they remind me to the ones made in the Psychology school of UNAM.
The only complain I have is that the place looks like a hole in the wall, maybe in a little ghetto neighborhood, but otherwise food is awesome. -

I agree that they have one of the best "tacos al pastor" in the area because they are cooked traditionally: marinated pork stacked up, grilled and cut in thin slices as soon as it gets cooked. Final taco is served with a thin slice of grilled pineapple taken from the top of this stack. This time I tried another kind of tacos and I would say that they are not that good. I asked for cabeza and tripas tacos and I didn't like both, cabeza meat is not good, kind of dark and not very good look. Tripas tacos are completely oily, so you may cook an egg with the oil dropped from your taco, they taste good though.
Another thing that I didn't like about this place is that they lack of a salsa bar, so you have to ask for it sometimes. Therefore the cook decides which kind of salsa and amount for each taco. Let the clients decide which salsa to put on the taco!!!
Next time I will try their quesadillas, definitely, if you swing by, ask for tacos al pastor. -

This place has decent tacos on the weekdays and awesome tacos on the weekends. They have one of those bar-b-ques where they meat is on a vertical spit that spins around as the meat cooks. The cook carves the meat right into the taco. Super good on sunday afternoons. Good chicken tacos too. The place is very small with almost no parking so call ahead and order to go.

When I lived around the corner we used to call this the "Secret Taqueria" cuz well, if you don't live in the neighborhood you don't know it's there! And I don't mean downtown in general since I moved from S. 6th & W. Reed to EAST Reed and that's when I found it! After La Penita, which was a closer walk, disappointed us too many times we said eff it and would walk under the overpass a couple times a week! Also in case the crappy liquor store in the same, er, center happens to be closed they'll sell you unopened beers!!! YAY!!!
