It was because of Krys T's review that I decided to try out MERLA's and I am sooo glad I did. "Anjo" was fricken awesome and he made me feel so comfortable (I felt like I knew him forever) sorry, I freak out having to get me hair done by someone new... I am a hairstylist follower and a creature of habit, same cut/style BUT because of "Anjo" and his recommendations on what would look good on me and asking how daring I was... well....... he made it work for ME ... layers, layers, and more layers, straight think bangs - it's hot! It's not even been a day yet and I have received so many complaints and I am glad that I grabbed some extra business cards and even passed them out to my girls..... "Anjo" is young, talented and a hair magician - I am such a fan!! ... Thanks to you YELPERS and those 5 star reviews if it wasn't for you all I would never ever thought of "Merla's"

There's no one else I would trust with my hair! Anjo at merla's is absolutely, hands down, the best!
The place doesn't look like much from the outside - it's tucked behind a 7/11 and you feel like you're creeping through an alley to get there. But as soon as you walk in, you'll feel like you've just found the best kept secret in the Bay Area!
How much do I love them? I drive up from the south bay, JUST to get my hair cut here. :D

I got my haircut and deep conditioning from him and I loved it! I came in looking like Erykah Badu and her frizzy afro and came out looking like..well..just the way I wanted to. Haha.
I really didn't have an idea of what kind of haircut I wanted. I just told Victor that my insanely curly hair looks like a triangle after I've styled my hair. So he grabbed his scissors and started snipping away. He recommended some shampoos and conditioners I would wanna try and made casual conversation. I swear, this guy is FUNNY!
V: So, do you have a boyfriend?
Me: Yea, we've been together for 2 years and some months...
V: Huh. So??? Has the sex been better or worse??
Me (laughs): Uhhh...None at all??
V: Come on, girl. I'm not gonna tell your mom! I have a boyfriend too. *points to the guy sitting on the chair next to me but he couldn't hear our conversation* He's my boyfriend, but don't tell anyone. He doesn't want people to know. He hasn't come out yet!
He made me laugh a lot of times and I love how he gets into your personal life in a really funny and friendly way. He's cute but unfortunately, ladies, he's gay, which adds up to his awesomeness!
It's a good thing for me too, because I live like a block away from this salon. It doesn't hurt either that the prices are reasonable. I got my haircut for $25 and $35 for the deep conditioning. Not bad for awesome results!
I must have came on the less busier days because me and my mom were walk-ins and Victor welcomed us with open arms. lol. Just to make sure, call for an appointment and ask for Victor. I HIGHLY recommend him! I will definitely come back!!

It's taken me years to find a regular stylist i actually like, and i found him HERE! i needed to do something about my super long, thick, wavy hair. i tried this place for the first time today and fell IN LOVE with my new 'do and my new stylist, Victor. He's personable, easy to talk to, gives good hair care advice, and HOTT! Not only did he cut hair well, but he gave me the best "blow job." hehe
The prices are reasonable and the salon itself is clean and comfortable. Call in advance to make an appointment.
I've been getting my hair cut here for a year, and I've been loyal to one stylist the whole time. The staff is awesome and love to joke around. They even order lunch for me from the Filipino restaurant next door while I get my haircut.
They are always booked so be sure to make an appointment a few days in advance.

I've been going to visit Victor since October of 08. I found this place on Yelp and Victor happened to be the person doing my hair that day. I remember going home and telling my girlfriends, "I know I found the ONE (hairstylist, of course)". My hair has always been difficult to cut. It's always been hard to find the right person who knows how to cut my hair. Victor is definitely the one who I trust to style my hair, because I get compliments after every visit. Most of all my husband loves it.

i love love love the someone who cuts my hair! i wont tell you that someones name cause its more competition getting my appointment with that someone. that someone knows the shape of my head and can sure work my complicated hair style. Thanks ate. hehe

I have finally found MY hair salon! I have been going from one hair salon to another...usually not satisfied with either the service or the haircut...round and roud I'd go.
Last week my sister told me about a place on Gellert right by AAA. So I decided to check it out. She recommended her stylist, Joni. I called him on a Sunday and he gladly accepted my call and booked an appointment with me.
Despite the lady (customer) next to me who didn't stop talking to my hairstylist throughout my whole appointment, I'm happy I took my sister's advice.
I like the staff...very friendly =) I love my hair! I don't think I've ever had this many compliments on my haircut before =) I've already recommended this place and my hairstylist to about 10 other people since last week. Overall, I'm satisfied and my locks have found a home =) My search for a friendly and talented hairstylist is finally over =)
Merla's is the type of salon that would make Tabatha Coffey suffer from anal incontinence... which is great, because I hate that bitch anyway.
To put it another way, this is a salon without pretension. Think of it as though you're going to a friend's house for a hair cutting party, not like you're going to a hoity-toity affair.
What everyone says about Victor is absolutely true. He does an amazing job. So amazing that even if you're the type of person who prefers snobbery (and I'm not), it doesn't matter because you're getting a kick-ass haircut. And in the end, that's the most important thing.
Victor makes my hair look great, which is no easy feat!
I was very pleased with my last-minute visit to Merla's Hair Design. Anjo was my stylist and he gave me a very nice and cute style. Too bad I couldn't extend the amazing look after I washed my hair 2 days later. He was really attentive to what I wanted and had good suggestions for hair care and style.
