I bit into a burger here and found a broken-off oven dial in the burger patty. Yes, I was absolutely traumatized. They paid for the bill and said that they're not responsible for the meat. When I tell the story today, people say I should've had a lawsuit.. Eh, whatever. Still has beautiful flat screen TVs, quality bar food and nice staff.
Oven dial in burger brings it down to 3 stars.
This is the better of the two Mercury Bars in New York. For bar food, this is a great destination mainly because of their decent sized portions. I've had wraps and burgers here and was never disappointed. Although it can get a bit crowded as the seating areas are close to the bar area, it is all good. Did I mention the service and friendliness is much better here than at the 3rd Avenue location?
Finally, the crowd here is mixture of theatre-going types, locals and Jersey people, which is actually an interesting blend. In the final analysis, I come here for the food and the big screen tvs!
The entire inside seating area was so uncomfortably hot that it was hard to enjoy the time spent there. The bar tenders are friendly and good at what they do. That helped me not focus so much on the heat. But it didn't make me cooler...
The sangria was good. $20 a pitcher? Not really THAT good...
They have an "Incredible Crabcake Sandwhich"...which the bartender joked about always reading as "Inedible"...
No place should ever make a claim of "incredible" that isn't backed up by hard evidence. And I am of the idea that if you have to claim that something is incredible, it probably is in fact NOT that and just saying that it is...
Meh...
I'm a fan. The place was friendly and welcoming. I grabbed a sweet booth, making it all the more comfortable. The waitresses in the bar area were overly-attentive (maybe too much!!) and easy to chat with. OK beer selection, but if you ever run into a buffalo chicken slider special... you better get it! Delicious!! Overall, fun atmosphere, good drinks and priced like the rest of the bars in the area.
Yeah the sangria is expensive at $20 bucks a pitcher (we ended up having 2), but we had a wonderful semi-drunken afternoon sitting outside people watching and getting a couple of hollers from the seamen (teehee) here for fleet week.
Most of them were ugly.
memory is a liiiiiittle hazy from my experience here, but it was fun. night before halloween, not too packed. service was decent, nothing to rave about. same with prices. but the interior is nice, a little more loungey then divey. i've passed it hundreds of times walking home, so i'm glad i checked it out. i vaguely remember going to the one on the east side years ago, same vibe.
This is a great bar to just chill and have a few beers with your friends. We have gone here a couple times when we are in the nieghborhood and just want to grab a drink before going somewhere else. The drinks are expensive- but coming from New Mexico this is the case everywhere I go in this city. The happy hour specials are good. I haven't tried a lot of the food, but if you just want something to munch on while you have a beer the appetizers are pretty good.
Pretty nice bar. Drinks are decent and a little expensive, but their calamari was one of the best I ever had.
It's a standard sports bar. Long bar, plenty of TVs, and some standard food options. They have 3 or 4 tables outside which is a pretty chilled place to watch the world go by without paying too much.
If you want tasty food, you should probably get it before or after you come here. But if you just want one or two drinks, the place is fine.
One star for the convenience of it being close to my apt and another star for the good music that they play.
This is a great place if you want to dance, but BEWARE: The guys here are GRIMY to the max. Do not come here unless you want to get grabbed, touched, or pulled in their direction.
No thank you to that!
I won't be coming back here unless my friends choose this location. The bartenders aren't attentive and it gets so crowded that it takes forever to get a drink.
This place also needs a serious face-lift/makeover-- the couches are torn and the floor is dingy/gross.
When I met some of my friends in NYC for a weekend a few weeks ago, we ended up having our own kind of "bar crawl" that Saturday we were there. We went from bar to bar in different parts of Manhattan. This was one of the spots we hit by accident. Some of our friends decided to grab eats at "Say Cheese!" next door, so the rest of us stumbled into Mercury Bar. We wasted no time and got straight to it.
It kind of sucked because 1) my friend wanted Yeungling, but they didn't have it, and then 2) I wanted Peroni, but they didn't have it either. WTF? I forgot what we ended up with, but I think we ended up going through three rounds before we decided to leave.
All in all, it's a typical bar. There were plenty of people; the early dinner crowd filling in to grab some drinks and easy "bar" food. There wasn't anything too great going on (although one of my friends "made friends" with Jonathan the bartender). We went through more spots later that evening (including some annoyingly PACKED club at the Bryant Park Hotel), but ultimately ended up back at Mercury. It was random, but it turned out to be a great time because of the company.
My girlfriend and I were looking for some lunch prior to our massage appointment, and after striking out three times at other places (the highlight being three anorexic upper east siders walking into a place we were about to walk into and hearing them go "ewwww! It smells like stale beer in here!!!" We looked at each other and went "okay, next?"), we found the Mercury Bar.
This place was decent enough. Service was a little slow, but the owner/manager so brilliantly scheduled one waitress for a bar with a front and back room, so it wasn't her fault. I had a grilled chicken sandwich and it was really quite tasty for bar food. My girlfriend had the chicken tenders (as she always does) and *my* french fries after finding out that a "side" of fries cost $4.
There are also three huge flat screen tv's behind the bar...all showing ESPN or some other mutation of it (two guesses who the main clientele for this bar are...probably not two fabulously gay women on their way to a professional massage). But the lunch was nice enough, and I'd be interested in checking this place out on a "typical bar night". The selection of beer they had on draft was HUGE, so I'm definitely okay with trying this place out again!
Recently went to new york! And this is one the bars we got to drink at it was actually a great spot, it was probably great because we got hooked up by the bartender, because my buddy knows him. but besides the point of knowing who, this was a great bar they carried my favorite beer Brooklyn Lager it was great!! I mean its a great spot to come out and have a few beers after work type of lounge, but if I head back to new york i'd definitely make a stop for a cold one at mercury!
This is where you go to have a beer when you're just to tired to walk any further. Convenient location, close to work, mid-town, Port Authority, etc. The combination of beer and bright blue lights distract you from the work the place needs. But the bartenders were cool, just very busy.
It's easy to hate on this place. It's filled with tourists, has sub-par food, and spotty service. However, check your Zagat guides people, this place isn't trying to be Savoy or Little Owl. It's a straight up sports bar, and delivers on its promise.
To Mercury Bar's credit, there's ample seating within good view of the TV's and good happy hour specials. This fits my sports bar criteria just fine.
However, i'd recommend eating before hand. It's your basic microwaved / deep fried burgers and fries that i'd prefer not to pay New York prices for.
The other nitpicky thing - the TV's are somewhat fuzzy. I found myself squinting most of the game, trying to figure out if the Cowboys were leading 23-7 or 73-7 (with Romo and Barber, who knows?).
Mediocre food and spotty service aside, this place isn't a bad pick for catching a sporting event on TV.
If you're looking for decent bar food and just a laid back sports bar feel then this is your place. I've been here twice around 3pm and the food was good enough for bar food. Again, this could be any bar on any street in the country. Nothing special but nothing horrible about it, either.
What can I say more? Like any other sports bar, it has gazillions of screens showing some basketball, hockey, baseball, football, or any other sports that's on during the current time. Music is alright, kind of random. I came here on a Sunday Night and they had Trivia Night going on after 8 PM. Some of the questions were easy and some were just impossible to guess. However, it gives topics to talk about between you and your buddies.
I usually go to Mercury Bar after work for a drink. I've had all their appetizers and all I can say is that their ONION RINGS are DELICIOUS. I can't say I've had any of their real food though.
Just grab a drink and load up on the onion rings. You won't regret it.
I got condoms from a pinata here.
If that isn't a great cinco de mayo, what is?
This place is right around the corner from me and it's a reliable spot if you're looking for a sports bar packed with young workers. I like the multiple flat screen tv's that line the bar and are always showing a game, the beers on tap, and the whole laid back but rowdy bar feel. The specialty cocktails are pretty tasty but can add up price wise. And if you go here for food, only get the easy things - ie fries, onion rings. Otherwise you'll prolly be disappointed. (Came here for brunch once, won't do that again). I'm glad I never have to pay to get in (which you shouldn't have to considering it's a bar, not a club). The bartenders & waiters are friendly too.
This used to be THE PLACE for my office to go for happy hour but over time I've found the drinks to taste like there's no alcohol in them. They do, however, have a really cool selection of fancy-schmancy cocktails and shots.
Miserable experience on a Thursday night. I ordered my vodka tonic, and tried to pay for about 20 minutes. Note that the place was half empty. I walked away, figured if they wanted my money they could come find me! It's not my job to force money on you.
A while later, went for a second drink. The bartender bitched me out for not paying earlier, and as you can imagine i had some kind words for that. Anyway, my total came to $19 (for 2 vodka tonics?? suck it!) and I opened a tab. But, we decided to leave. When I closed my tab it was $22, and a beer had been added. I complained, obviously, and the girl who closed my tab basically said, I don't care, you going to sign? I said sure...that $3 can be your tip!
No need to ever return. I can get crappy service in a lot of places, no need for it to be here.
I walked in for dinner on a Monday night because they were playing pretty good music. I ordered a turkey burger with a side salad and the food was much better than I expected. Beer prices were typical nyc, and the folks in the bar seemed fine. There was a group of guys in a booth that were definitely diva material, but i didn't pay them any attention until the bartenders decided to have a name that tune trivia contest. Unfortunately none of the ten songs could ever grace my ipod, but i thought i played one of them on guitar hero three. Anyhow, the bartender thought the diva's had cheated because they got a perfect score...I mean come on, you know they know their tunes. I think they deserved their free pitcher of margaritas. Long story short, I don't think i'll be coming back here.
This bar isn't great but it also doesn't suck, either. It's a pretty solid joint all around with a decent atmosphere, lots of TVs, plenty of beers on tap, and good food. I mainly come here for the wings which are some of the best in the city, I think.
I would compare going to Mercury Bar to going to an upscale chain restaurant (Macaroni Grill, for example)...you aren't going to have the greatest experience of your life but you also wont be let down. Hence the 3 star rating.
I went yesterday in the gorgeous weather and spent a few hours drinking and people watching outside. It was pretty crowded for a Saturday afternoon, and you could see the TVs from the outside (which was awesome for the yanks/sox game.) Great burgers, a bit overpriced, but mediocre skinny shoe string fries.
Bad things:
1) Surprise! They have specials everyday except saturdays and sundays. It was 6$ for a draft beer.
2) The patio is great, but beware of the M11 bus that pulls up every 5 minutes; blocking the sun, filling the air with loud beeping, and exhausting poisonous fumes.
This place is typically a standard choice between my friends. If we can't decide on a bar to go to we usually choose Mercury Bar. Nothing really fancy but they do have a good balance between a restaurant and a bar. Lots of TVs with sports always on and food is pretty good. Personally I do good with the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich but the Hells Kitchen burger is ok as well. The hotwings are not that good here. The other beef I have with this place is the largest quantity they serve of beer at a time is a pint. I was hoping for a large 24 ounce mug or a pitcher but nope. Wasn't that crowded for a Friday night.
Bottom Line: Everyone can find something they like at this bar. Good service and good food. For some I could see it being too much of a restaurant if you are in the mood for drinks only.
I should have known not to order lobster from a place like this and I never will again. It arrived like a rubber chew toy. Our waitress was nice and quick with drinks, though.
NEVER EAT HERE! One star for the Hoegaarden but the food ICK!!
I ordered an Oriental Chicken Salad to go (lunch special for $7.50.) I placed my order and although she quoted me 10 min, I returned in 15min, thinking it would be ready.
After waiting another 10min, I asked to pay. I need $15 of change and she brings me 10 singles and a five - like I'm going to tip her for a take out that took 25 min! The salad was large and tasty but halfway through, I found a small bug / knat on a piece of lettuce!!!
NEVER EAT HERE!
Mercury Bar is a really good place to watch sports during the day and eat lunch- lots of big screen TVs and decent bar food. The service is average.
For dinner, go elsewhere.
Any place can have its charms during a summer day. I didn't go on a summer day. I went on a Wednesday night. All you really need to know is that, it was ladies night, and there were exactly 7 ladies to be found: two were focused on conversation and having dinner, two were by the bar scoping out the slim pickin's, and the rest were paired with guys on dates. This place just wreaked of boring. A few brohams in the front, and a couple of older dudes in the back. Bartenders were fine, and the only real plus is the projection screens are huge, to the point where they obstruct the top shelves at the bar. Its good to not have to crane my neck one way or the other to see a tv.
I came here already drunk so maybe I need to go again to be sure, but this place was not that great. Do not get the margarita pitcher! It is not strong at all and very small for too much money. Their happy hour is kind of not so great either. Thats all I really have to say about this place.
Went here before seeing fellow Yelper Jim's play at the Producer's club last night...disappointing array of happy hour specials. (Basically, if you don't like beer, there isn't a happy hour), but really yummy appetizers...I recommend the exceptionally yummy guacemole, or the roasted veggie potato skins. My friend had the burger, and she liked it a lot - my salad wasn't bad, but next time...I'm just getting more dip :)
This was my favorite place to sit and have lunch this past summer. The food in the daytime is really, really good and very reasonably priced. You can sit out in the sun (it's never hard to get a table outside) during the day, sip your citrusy beer with the orange and order some great salads, sandwiches, pizza, apps, and more. They also have Guiness on tap, which is something to point out. I cannot comment on the night scene too much, which might be a completely different experience. But for a sunny daytime destination, it is an A+.
My friends and I started going to Mercury Bar for the Sunday Trivia Nights. It's always super crowded and rowdy, with numerous flat screens playing whatever sports game is in season and random Japanese game shows for comic relief. Service is consistent and quick, for the most part. We've only had the snack-ish foods there (the cone of Fries are YUMMY!), so can't give a full review of their food.
Average watering hole. You'll find nothing special here except for the bright name of the bar in front of the place. The crowd looks like a combination of tourist and Jersey commuters waiting for their rides from nearby Port Authority. Good safe bet if you're meeting a couple of buddies before you head out to hopefully bigger and better things for the night. Definitely not a date place. Food was average but they had Guiness on tap, which is always a plus.
A generic one of many Murry Hill yuppie bars, the experience isn't really all that memorable. It's generally not as crowded as Joshua Tree, but isn't really as fun either. Drinks are typically priced for east-30's: a step below Midtown and Soho.
Pretty good bar eats here -- large, greasy brunch too. It is super dark here even during the day. Steep steps down to the restrooms. Good to watch a game at during your fave sports season.
Reliable pub with decent pub food with a more upscale feeling, (no beer on the floor unless you're 'real lucky'). You'll find the after-work, non-Manhattan dwelling yuppie crowd here, (the more artistic, trendier types will not be found here). You might find their dates here though. While everyone else in the area is at the theater or sipping the newest variations of martini in more stylish settings, you'll see NJ professionals watching the game here.
This is a place I prefer to avoid. I really just dont find any charm in it. Cookie cutter bar with over priced bar food. Ive never been wowed by the all too typical beer selections. It lacks a unique touch from interior design down to patrons.
Ate dinner here on a Saturday night--you definitely can do better in the area. The service was horrid--slow and flippant. The menu is pretty diverse and good--everyone will find something they like, but none of it tastes too good. Had a decent Chicken Pesto Panini with soggy fries, and my friend had liquidy spaghetti. Drink menu is pretty limited, as well. Definitely look elsewhere in the area.
