4 reviews for Mercer Museum
I used to work here - as a summer day camp counselor and arts & crafts supervisor MANY, many years ago. I don't know if they run a kids sumer program here any mroe - but the one they used to have was great.
Anyhow, the Mercer Museum was built of steel reinforced concrete by Henry Chapman Mercer to house his private collection of Americana and household wares from the revolutionary era and beyond.
It is an eclectic mix of really interesting stuff including a whaling boat (com[plete with harpoons) suspended from the 4th Floor and a creepy old gallows that actually was used to hang criminals way back when.
Kids and Adults can both learm from Mercer - either here or at his home, Fontill or his workshop next to Finthill, the Moravian Pottery and Tile works.
You can also hold events here - and even get MARRIED here on the beautiful grounds.

My BF has been talking about this places for years and perhaps raised my expectations too high. Overall it's an enjoyable, eccentric afternoon outing. We went with a couple of friends after Xmas as an "adult" way of hanging out. I can see why the American Museum Association didn't recognize Mercer as a real museum until 2005 -- it's higgly-piggly due to Henry Mercer's collection habits, not to mention he wrote large catalog numbers on the pieces!
Definitely interesting to see old pieces of Americana and enjoyed the current exhibit on old time music.
Be warned that there is no heating/air conditioning so dress appropriately.
I went here on a field trip in middle school and it is truly one of the most interesting places in the area. The tiles are beautiful and the history behind it is fascinating.

This is a weird and interesting place. I recall learning that it was made entirely from poured concrete by a local eccentric. They have lots of local historical stuff here and festivals/fairs a few times during the year. The tiles from the nearby Tile Works are quite lovely.
