Prosser is bombarded with great wineries.  When we were in town over President's Day weekend, up-and-coming Mercer Estates wasn't yet open.  They opened in April '09, and it was our first stop this time around.  They don't have highway signs quite yet, but they're at the end of Lee Rd, in the company of fellow wineries.  There is a $5 tasting fee, and they also offer wine by the glass.  Our tasting included 4 whites and 4 reds, and they also offered a taste of their unfermented sauvignon blanc "grape juice".  The tasting room was spacious and elegant with tables and chairs for those who want to rest or visit, and colorful artwork on the walls.  The service was friendly and attentive with two servers pouring from behind the bar.  The wines were all equally enjoyable and well-structured...my favorites being the 08 Pinot Gris and 07 Cabernet Sauvignon.

During our recent trip to WA wine country, we were astounded with the quality of wines found for reasonable prices.  We spent time in Woodinville, Prosser, Walla Walla, and the Columbia Gorge.  In Prosser,Mercer Estates did not disappoint in wine quality, as most everything we tasted could be rated at least good.  The problem with Mercer Estates is the staff we encountered.  Though the tasting room is big and nicely decorated, it felt sterile to us though it could have been that we were the only ones there.  The gal who came out from a back office seemed bothered by us showing up, though it was still 30 minutes or so from closing on a Sunday.  When we asked questions they were barely answered and she seemed to be rushing us to get done.  We left after just 10-15 minutes, and though the wine was good, we didn't want to trouble her to ring up a sale.  She did seem disapponted in that.  Go figure.  We figured she was just an employee in a hurry to get home to a bunch of kids or something, and were surprised to learn that she was in management there.  Surely a place like that can do better.  There are many other more fun wineries in Prosser with excellent wine, some on the same road as Mercer Estates (don't miss Alexandria Nicole Winery) and then a whole lot out at "Vintners Village" where we spent a great afternoon.  Lunch at "Wine O'Clock" in that area was excellent.  We had a great day in Prosser, just ended it on a sour note.  If we ever make it back to Prosser, we'll skip Mercer Estates, and would recommend you do too.

Mercer Estates is a family-owned Washington State winery devoted to producing premium wines through a partnership of the Mercer and Hogue families.

Pioneers in winemaking and viticulture in the Columbia Valley, the Hogue and Mercer families have helped shaped the past and present of Washington State winemaking, and are confidently forging a new path ahead in the Horse Heaven Hills, Yakima Valley and Columbia Valley AVAs. Winemaker David Forsyth, formerly of The Hogue Cellars, is in charge of winemaking on behalf of the joint venture families.

Our friendly and knowledgeable tasting room staff welcomes you to belly up to the tasting bar to taste in the traditional manner, one wine at a time. Or take a seat and enjoy a private and relaxing tasting at one of our comfortable tables, enjoying the wines side-by-side.

History

Established in 2006

Mercer Family
The Mercer Family has been farming in the Horse Heaven Hills for four generations and growing vinifera since the early 1970's. Their family's roots are in livestock and row crops but over the last two decades Bud Mercer and his son, Rob, have become enthused by wine and have developed the skill for growing ultra-premium wine grapes. The Mercer Family is known throughout eastern Washington for their work ethic, their patriotism and their never-ending contributions to the community.

Hogue Family
The Hogue Family has been farming in the Yakima Valley since the 1940's. Originally hop farmers, the family began growing juice grapes in the early 1970's and vinifera in the late 1970's. Today crisp, juicy Washington apples have taken the place of hops and vinifera is the primary focus of all resources. Mike Hogue, his daughter Barbara and her husband Ron Harle run the family farm based in Prosser, WA.

Meet the Manager: Jenna H.

Jenna Hannan, Hospitality Manager for Mercer Estates Winery.
Acquired my degree in Viticulture and Wine Marketing for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. I have enjoyed working and playing in the California wine Country since 1999. Starting in the Edna Valley, working my way north to Dry Creek/Alexander Valley and finally down into the Santa Cruz Mountains. I began drinking WA State wines and soon I was hooked! So here I am in eastern WA and loving it, learning directly what makes this region so great.
