i was going to give memphis four stars for their excellent vegan sandwiches (mom and i split the smoked coconut club and the bbq seitan-- both were incredible), great atmosphere, and very friendly/fast service. then i opened up the ketchup bottle and it made a popping sound. a brand new ketchup bottle! call me howard hughes, but sometimes it is nice to get first dibs at a thing before everyone else gets their paws all over it.

really though, i would gladly go back here any day of the week-- new ketchup bottles or not-- and would definitely recommend it to a vegan who has omnivores to entertain, or vice versa.

Last time I went to the Memphis Taproom it was Mystery Beer Weekend, I drank beers I didn't like and didn't know the names of.

I was excited to head back and see what their regular beer list was like, but when I went back and it was German Beer Weekend. This place loves drinking games. I had great food and great service, but had to order a bottled beer, cause I'm just not that into German beer.

I want my beer to be black. I want it to come out of a tap. Year round.

Went back again for brunch and there was finally a stout on draught! Egg in a nest with roasted mushrooms and an imperial stout make for a good morning. Hopefully they have a festive stouts weekend sometime soon!

So so so so so disappointed in this place! All the great reviews, why oh why did I not love it?

I got the king rarebit which I have no complaints about, cheesy and eggy goodness. The fries are really good too.

My boyfriend got the BBQ seitan sandwich, which I really didn't like at all. I hate it when seitan has the bread-y taste if it's not seasoned well, and this is what his tasted like to me. :/ He disagrees and said it was delicious, for the record.

Also, what the fucking hell, 7 dollars for a franziskaner???? Seriously???? Who do you think you are?

Draft prices are totally cool though.

Oh and the vegan carrot cake that I had for dessert was delicious!

However the bad outweigh the good for me and I can't say I'd go back here, unless it's with some carnivore friends so I can see what fleshy offerings they have.

I love this place! If you are a vegan/vegetarian, you have plenty of options. My favorite is the vegan chicken fried steak.

My favorite time at the Taproom was during this past year's Philly Beer Week.  It was a 5-course vintage beer brunch. The staff was friendly and accommodating and the beer selection they presented opened my eyes to styles that I have been hesitant to try (like the sour Cantillon lambic).

Overall, tasty beer and food!

After driving over 30 hours, my friend and I finally arrived in our new town. Luckily, we have my cousin here to show us around. Memphis taproom was the first place we wanted to try, I was not disappointed.

We had the suicide rings and the fried green tomatoes. The suicide rings are the shiz, but the fried green tomatoes were just OK, I guess that is because I am from the south, and these were not traditional fried green tomatoes.

Great beer selection, though I have to get used to ordering something other than Lonestar.

BEST BURGERS!  One day hanging out at the Philadelphia Brewing Company some friends and I were looking for a place to eat after we toured the brewery.  Had this place recommended and have been back many times since!  Deep fried pickles, onion rings and the port richmond platter.... MMMM soo good! My room mate is a vegetarian and the menu had plenty of options for him.

Overall good beer, good food, good times.

My buddy Tim told me about this joint about a year ago, and I really love it.  The beer emphsis is a bit more tilted to Europe than at the other Philadelphia beer bars that I like.  There's always something interesting on draft, and there is a nice selection of bottled Belgian beer, in particular.  The food is really good here, in my opinion.  This seems to me to have a much less friendly crowd than the Grey Lodge, for example, although that may be because I'm a lot older than most of the customers here.  I really like the neighborhood, too, and it is easy to find a parking spot on the street.

The staff is friendly and the food and drinks are all reasonably priced.  They have a great selection of beer and the suicide rings are tasty!
Skip the Port Richmond Platter-it will disappoint you if you love Polish food and opt for a sandwhich-they're all tasty!  My only complaint is that they don't have a bigger menu.

Amazing spot in the Kensington area.
Got doe skating with my buddy, and needed a close place to chill with some good food and beers...*bing*
The beer selection alone is worth the trip, great micros, and hand cask options!
Awesome veg and vegan menu options as well. I had some great johnny cake type deals with a mango slasa of sorts. Also a BBQ seitan sandwich with sweet potato fries...heavenly.
Kind of a hipster scene, but I find Philly hispters to be much more tolerable than NYC hipsters...fight!
Seriously though...get a skateboard, go skate POPS, then head to the Taproom for awesome beer and grub.

The bar looks great, inside and out, and gives everyone in Fishtown/Port Richmond another nice place to go out. Great local beers on tap. The bar staff has always been great. The food is above average overall, I remember the wings being particularly good... menu could use a standard pub sandwich for the more picky eaters. My main gripe is that the bar is small - pretty darn narrow, I think maybe only 10 people can sit at it or get to it. Sure, there are 2 other tables in the room, but it makes getting around a little wonky when the bar is just modestly busy. In fairness, there is a whole other side to this place that's more of a restaurant, which would work great for bigger groups of people.... I'm just a fan of sitting at the bar with a couple pals. That being said, provided I am able to grab a seat, I always have a great time, and I'll keep coming back.

memphis is a gem in fishtown, where going to eat is pretty much limited to here + ida mae's ... and memphis is far superior.

being vegan usually means a boring tofu scramble or a garden burger -- if i'm lucky. at memphis, there is a tonne of choices + they're all fantastic. their veggie burger is amongst my favourite foods on earth.

the beer is also great - where else can you sample rare cask brews from bavaria?

i can't say enough about how much i love memphis.

Came back to the Memphis for the first time in maybe a year?  It was just as awesome, and this time around I tried the BBQ cider-braised seitan sandwich, substituting my fries for a mixed green salad on the side.  The roll is yummy, the BBQ sauce perfect, and the seitan amazing.  I loved how the coleslaw was right on the sandwich.  Even my side salad, filled with cucumbers, carrots, and cherry tomatoes, was amazing.  I think the side salad was a good choice because I could appreciate the sandwich more!

For the beer, I tried the Brooklyn Sorachi Ace - a really unique farmhouse ale with Japanese hops.  Not usually a fan of Brooklyn Brewery beers, but this one was goooooooooood.

To top it all off, we split a piece of the vegan black forest cake.  Don't let the vegan fool you - this was amazing.

Hopefully I'll be back here more frequently!

Five stars earned here and if a sixth were available, I'd tack it on.

Our waiter was all pro - knew his beers, knew his foods, made us feel at home. The draft beer selection was deeper than most of the Olde Richfisherties places I've seen, but also not as familiar. I'd love to go back sometime soon and sit down at the bar just to try them all.

The menu was quite unique, offering many dishes and variations I've never seen in Philadelphia. It also boasted 7 vegetarian options and 9 more deemed vegan. I had the fish and chips, perfectly beer-battered. The coleslaw and fries were solid. Between the four of us, we also shared a few dishes. Old bay jackfruit cakes, beer-battered kosher dills, and the hefeweizen hummus were all great. The dills especially hit the spot for me - paired with an amazingly appropriate horseradish buttermilk dip.

I did find it amusing that their menu not only stated that the dining room is reserved exclusively for diners and that drinkers needed to "make a new friend in the bar and have drinks!", but it also said "It's a house rule. All the time. Please don't go home and blog about this". :-D Kudos for being candid!

If you like the atmosphere and beer selection of Standard Tap but wouldn't mind making the trip for a better menu, this is the place to go.

This place is probably in my Top 3 for best bar/pub/taprooms in Philadelphia. I've never had a bad time here. The service is always great. Very friendly staff. Great beer and food selection. Many many options on the menu whether you're a carnivore or herbivore. The staff a very wide knowledge of all the beers they carry so if you're that Budweiser/Miller/PBR drinker that usually would never drink a micro brew you might be up for living on the edge should you ever decide to visit the Memphis Taproom.

Best restaurant in Fishtown, no contest whatsoever.
MASSIVE beer selection, fantastic food (lots of delicious vegan options, always at least one vegan dessert), awesome staff (one of the friendliest in the city, hands down)...
I really love this place.
It's the defacto spot if you're in the area, but i imagine it's popularity will turn it into a much more far reaching destination as the word spreads...

Kudos, guys.

I don't know the owner, but I'd wager he is not a racist. I've been here many, many times with just about every shape, size and color you can find. Always a great staff.

I didn't care much for this place first couple of visits. They had a great selection of beers, but the food didn't do much for me and I found the aforementioned "skinhead" owner loud. I love being wrong! The reason I kept coming back was due the the friendliness of that very owner. He might be the best bartender I've had - knew what my tastes were within 2 or 3 visits and always hit the mark when suggesting something new to me. I think his eyes even lot up once when I asked if he had good and sour in the way of a gueuze. Great, spreadout selection of drafts and plenty of bottles to cover all the bases.

The food is good, my favorite veggie burger in town. Always good fish and chips. The fried goods are great! I haven't had a salad that did much for me, but that's cool. 5 stars since I can't do 4.5.

We were getting ready to go out one Friday night, and couldn't settle on a place.  You know those nights where you don't feel like the usual haunts, and want to try something new?  So everyone suggested a place we hadn't been, and piled into the car for a trip to Fishtown.  It's off the beaten path a bit, and I don't know if theres a good way to get there on septa, but it's worth the trip.

It's a relatively small, unassuming place, with a 10-seat bar in the front, and about 10 tables in the dining room.  Service was pretty good though our waitress didn't notice empty beers a couple times. I got the sense we lucked out there, as the other server seemed frazzled.  When she helped deliver our food, she just barked the name of the item at the table, which was a bit jarring.

The taps had an interesting variety of locals, and a decent bottle list.  For food, we split suicide rings and fried pickles.  The onion was good, with a nice spicy dip.  The pickles were interesting, basically a wedge of kosher dill battered and deep fried.  It's not really my thing, and be warned, it came out very hot, and held that heat for a while.

The entrees were very good.  I had the port richmond platter, a plate of kielbasa, pierogi, sauerkraut, and potato pancakes.   The pierogi were fantastic, I don't think I've ever used the term "melt in your mouth" to describe a dumpling before.  The kielbasa was decent and sauerkraut was good but not great, unfortunately I've been spoiled by my brother's kraut.  A friend had a fantastic chicken fried chicken, but was actually raving about the greens it came with.  My other friends enjoyed the hangar steak and seitan sandwich.  I also tried a bite of the carrot cake for dessert, and thought it was very good, even though I don't really like carrot cake.

All in all, I think its worth the trip to Fishtown, and a great addition to a growing neighbourhood.

I moved to Philly this past month, and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I moved very close to one of the best beer bars in the city. I love this place!

The draft selection is usually diverse with a focus on the more local microbrews. The bottle selection is vast, and diverse as well. All the bartenders are friendly and knowledgeable. The environment is comfortable both day and night. Most regulars there or people that go out of the way to drink here are pleasant as well.

I've also eaten here a few times already since moving, and I'm glad to say that not only is the beer awesome here but the food is too! It has a good mix of all kinds of food. If you're veggie or vegan there are plenty of delicious options too. I've had the braised swiss chard mac n cheese, which is hands down the best mac n cheese I've ever had. The Port Richmond platter is great too! It's a hearty meal with perogies, kielbasa, sauerkraut and potato pancakes. I had their special steak sandwich once as well too. The Chicken platter is amazing as well.... you get the point that I've tried many different dishes here and all have been very delectable and superb.

This is a place I plan on showing all my friends that decide to visit, because it's a great hang out spot not only for drinks, but for food and if a Phillies game is on there is usually a fun lively atmosphere.

The food is still awesome.

Roasted mushroom grinder = way better than any cheesesteak I've had in this town. I know, sacrilege, right?

The atmosphere was better this time and our party didn't get shushed for adult-themed topics. I still don't love that lots of folks bring their kids here, though. Sometimes, I like to go out to eat and avoid toddling children who wander over unattended.

I love that they have Sam Smith's Organic Cider in bottles, Allagash Tripel, and Monk's Sour Ale - some of my favorite libations.

The fried pickles and suicide rings still light my fire. If only I could find a boy as yummy as they are instead of tables of canoodling couples.

There is nothing bad to say about this bar. I could heap praise upon it, but it's already been done many times prior.

If you are a beer geek and love delicious food, go here.

The servers are always friendly, helpful, and patient.

The food is outstanding and the menu constantly rotates.

Beers cycle in and out so fast that you'd petrify your liver trying them all. Always something new that I haven't tried on tap, and I have tried a LOT of beers.

Can't wait for mystery beer weekend. 33 beers in 3 days. I am prepping my liver right now.

Memphis Taproom has delicious beer offerings, tasty food (the best wings in the city, hands down!), a comfortable neighborhood-friendly atmosphere, two of my favorite bartenders around (Jess and Julianna--those ladies are the shit!), and a sweet location (three blocks from my house which makes it easier to stumble home after consuming too many beverages).

This is the kind of place in which I can spend all day, 11AM to 8PM (or later!), from Bloody Marias (hey, I like tequila) and eggs at brunch to wings, steak and beer at dinner. Oh, wait! I've done that.

Seriously, the MT rules.

I went back for the first time in about a year because of some weird service issues. It seemed unless the bartenders/owner knew you, verbal exchanges resembled an alien encounter....not fun/pleasant. Hello people, it's a big city, not a scary little town where everyone knows your business....be nice to people you don't know, they might tend to come back.

Since the owners opened Local 44 and the focus perhaps shifted, I thought I'd give it a whirl. Thankfully, there weren't any alien sightings and the bartender on staff from day shift ( I am rotten with names) was actually quite friendly and attentive. Yay! Unfortunately he left before I finished but the guy who took over was okay too.

The beer selection of course is amazing and the food is terrific too.
The Hefeweizen Hummus was about the best hummus I've ever had.
You have to try the Pilsner Brined Hot Wings too. Pretty decent Fish and Chips also.

Good to see based on prior reviews that I'm not uber-sensitive regarding the service. I'll be back!

I overheard the people who work here telling the table next to us that they should blog the fact that Memphis Taproom needs scrapple.  So I will be the one to say it. Memphis Taproom needs scrapple.  Scrapple.  Scrapple.  Scrapple.

Ok, so apparently they don't have scrapple.  And they are located very far away from me and I get lost every time I go here.  Despite those two miserable facts, I love Memphis Taproom!

It's really cute inside.  It has a nice homey feel.   There are outlets located at each table around the dining room walls.  I wish I had an excuse to bring my laptop here so I could eat wings and drink beer all day.

The servers are super friendly and helpful.

But most importantly, the food is delicious.    I have had brunch and dinner here and was happy with both.  The wings are super tasty and great to share.   Also, they have a really great rotating selection of beer on tap at very reasonable prices.

It is worth the drive, even if it means I'll definitely get lost again.

memphis taproom to me and my friends is a like a home away from home.  if my home was a bar / restaurant with amazing beer selection and menu.  in the past week i've been there 4 times.  birthdays, dinners, drinks with friends, sports games, brunch, or you're just in the area and need a place to park your rear for a sec, this is where we go.  the bartenders, wait staff, etc. are down-to-earth and just plain nice folk.  they'll treat you like a regular even if you're not, but they won't b.s. you or be fake just because you're a customer.  unfortunately, my taste buds have matured to that of an 8th-grader, so beer isn't my steeze.  but i'm not ignorant to the fact that this place is known for it's amazing selection.  the food menu was designed for me.  meat, meat, meat, with enough veggie options, and nice good stick-to-your ribs comfort food.  the mushroom bisque the other night had me saying "oh my god. oh my god" after every spoonful.  it won't break your wallet either.  it's reasonable and you def get way more than you pay for.  my only gripe is that there aren't enough healthy or light food options.  but who needs that crap when you're going to Memphis!

I regularly give the Memphis Taproom a hard time. That being said, I realize that it is one of the best bars in the city, and I am lucky to live within walking distance of it. The Memphis Taproom is a no frills beer bar that serves up an excellent menu and complements the food with an even better beer selection.

I can't go without mentioning beer week. Memphis Taproom ran a week-long event called "No Repeat Beer Week" where each time a keg kicked, a new beer was put on tap. For the whole week. It was impressively delicious.

The Taproom is a bit small, but it makes good use of its space. The front bar area is for people drinking, and the back dining room is only for those who are buying food. Because space is limited, this is a understandable request. The atmosphere is nice; homely and not overly decorated. The place can be a bit overwhelming when it's crowded, which is a regular occurrence. The Taproom doesn't have a happy hour, which would be a nice addition.

The staff is pretty great. I've never had a server who wasn't knowledgeable about the beers, and the food service is great too. The kitchen is a bit slow. But when I'm drinking a good beer, I tend not to notice as much. The suicide rings and the sandwiches (at $8 or $9) are the stars of the menu. I've also enjoyed brunch here a few times.  The coffee is a bit strong for my taste, so I opt for the tasty Belgian witbier mimosa instead.

Bottom Line: This spot is great, and I'm glad it is in my neighborhood. I recommend checking out the tap list, waiting until something you really want to try is available, and checking out this excellent bar.

My second in the Tap Room Series...

On a particularly subfreezing, single digit night, my friend Brendan invited me to have drinks at the Memphis taproom in Fishtown. I'm primarily a South and West Philly guy, never really understood the hype of anything north of Spring Garden, but lately I've been trying real hard to expand my geography. I have to start with the bikeride.

I bike everyday to and from work and anywhere else in between, regardless of the atmospheric conditions. As a rule, at least for the last 2 years, I don't bike if I'm going to be drinking more than a beer or two. So I head up 5th st, ride through the tunnel, make a right on Girard and instead of turning left on Frankford, I keep going straight until the road splits 3 ways into 95, Richmond Ave, and Aramingo Ave. I choose Richmond and realize I am now on an entrance ramp to a high speed highway. After scaring the sh*t out of myself, I make a left at Ridge, a full 10 blocks north of the bar. After finally figuring out my bearings, I make to the pub and my poor friend Brendan (who also is a Yelper) was all alone, nobody else had shown.

I go for the Yards Brawler, and its great. The bartender priced most of the Draught beers at $2 because new stuff was coming the next day.

"Boasting superior taste and champion flavor, the Brawler is crafted in the style of English session ales. This malt-forward, ruby colored ale is great for when you want to go a few rounds."

That was a little blurb from http://www.beersuggest..., they can describe taste better than I. Thanks guys!

You have to get the deep-fried Pickles! The batter is flakey like whole wheat flour, but is buttery like fried chicken! Seriously, its all I ate because you get huge, stiff spears (thats what she said). After that, the rest of the party showed, and I got tipsy on discounted Christmas beers! In conclusion, this place is comfy and has much promise, I must come and have a full meal soon!

PS The PBC Xmas beer is not good at all!

The staff was friendly and the beer selection and food were good.  The mac and cheese was like a mountain of cheesey love... and beer-battered pickles are awesome (although everything is awesome when it's beer-battered).

For this area of town, this place is great. I really enjoyed my time here. Sadly, I don't think without googlemaps or a GPS system, I'll ever find the place. And luckily I ride a bike most places; this place is far and out of the way.

But the beer is awesome. More importantly, the people there know beer. They love beer. They know what goes with what and they make great recommendations...like this one: Go to Memphis Taproom.

Great place for an honest meal and consuming adult beverages.  Try the swiss chard mac and cheese with hazelnuts - it'll blow your mind.

Talk about local flavor!

The menu is like everything I ate at family parties in Port Richmond.
Keibasy grinders, pierogies, and sauerkraut. The cool part is they put these items alongside butternut squash mac and cheese, seitan skewers, and an in-house veggie burger.
It is very clear they are going for a traditional meets modern feel and they pull it off quite well.

I went here the night before the Yelp Sideshow for a quick bite. I wanted to save room for all the chorizo deliciousness awaiting me so I went with the vegan Chickpea Kibee Kebab -- basically a falafel.
That said, I'm really impressed by the number of Vegan/Veg options -- the menu is about 1/2 and 1/2 which makes for a great variety of ingredients and choices.
Next time I'm bringing my first string appetite and going for the hanger steak and fried pickles.

Don't miss out the ever changing list of beers on tap. Our server knew her stuff and was loaded with suggestions. I went with the Allabash Tripel and at 9% abv I was feeling pree-tee good.

Sadly, I must give this three stars, after babbling on like a psycho about fried pickles and wanting to go here... When I finally did, it was just "eh."

The bartender, a burly sort of guy, had some 'tude.  He was that type of bartender that makes eye contact with you, and when you think he's going to take your order and go "Hi can I-" - he just walks right past you and makes you feel lame-o.  He seemed more into whatever game was on TV than serving his customers, which ... I've been in the service industry, and I just don't think that's acceptable.

The fried pickles were pretty good, but they were a little overdone, and I actually prefer the fried pickles at the Continental.  But, they were decent.  We also had the beef pasties, which were OK.  A little dry.  The hot mustard sauce they came with was awesome.

I ordered the white bean chili as my meal, which.. when I think white bean I think of a white stock, but this was a red, tomato-based stock, which I wasn't too keen on since I was expecting white bean..white stock.  I bet if I were vegan I really would have liked this chili, but when I think of tomato based chili, I think of meeeattt.  Haha.  So, I added sour cream and then it became pretty good.  It was cool that they gave you sliced jalapenos with it - easy way to kick up the heat on your own.

My fiance ordered the fried chicken entree which came with mac n cheese, which was pretty good.

The beer selection was really nice, and the atmosphere was cool.

So yeah, 3 stars.  I don't know, maybe they were having an off-night.  Very odd, as the other yelpers seem to love it very much.  Maybe I'll give it another try for lunch sometime.

Great beer selection. Onion rings and wings are worth the trip alone. Seriously delicious nods to two of my favorite bar foods. Sandwiches are never a let down. DON"T order the fried pickles and then finish them off with the fish and chips. I have an iron gut, and this was enough deep fried goodness to leave me sick for hours. Seriously. It was delicious, but old school fryer oil stomach ache (not saying the oil was old, saying that the food took alot of grease with it like old school fried food). One of the best bars in Port Fishington for sure.

This place is wayyyyy the wayyyyyyy out thurr.  However, if you are surrounded with excellent company (which I was) and/or on the lookout for cute, besweatered and bearded boys (which I wasn't, at the time), then Memphis Tap Room is well worth the trek.

The other two minor things which cost the place a star for me--it's much smaller and more cramped than I expected, and really it's much more of a dining establishment than a bar.  I imagine it's a great little neighborhood watering hole, but I would never make the trip all the way up here if I wasn't primarily looking to grab something to eat.

I guess I'm making it sound like I wasn't crazy about the place.  FALSE.  I all but inhaled my cheeseburger, which was pretty much ideal, even though the overly-seasoned fries were not.  The cheeseburger was a welcome antidote to my premature drunkenness, fueled by half a bottle of Disaronno on the rocks.  Thanks to that juicy entree, I was able to enjoy the rest of my birthday evening at the table instead of in the tiny ladies' room.

I guess this place is known for its beer selection, although I wouldn't have known about it as I didn't drink anything but water while I was at the place (see aforementioned Disaronno incident).  AND MY SERVER DIDN'T JUDGE ME EITHER, SO THERE.

I should also mention that they have a DELICIOUS chocolate cake that they bring out for birthdays.  I imagine it's on the regular dessert menu, but if it's not, say it's your birthday.  I'm for serious y'all.  Lie if you have to.  It's that good.

Over the past week I wrote 2 negative reviews about the Memphis Taproom's newest installment, the Local 44, so I felt it was only fair to give praise to the Memphis Taproom.

This is a tremendous bar with great beer and great food.  The beer prices are all reasonable, and they have a ridiculously extensive bottle and draft selection.  It's almost to the point that you get overwhelmed(in a good way) trying to choose a beer.  The food is top notch.  Their chicken fingers over mac and cheese is amazing.  Some of the best chicken fingers and mac and cheese I ever had.  They have so many good beer munchie comfort foods.

The service is fast and friendly.  Everyone has a smile on their face.  Everyone does their best to go out of their way to make you feel at home.  I love coming to a place that treats you as if they were your friend and not their customer.

I would suggest that no matter where you live in the city that it is worth making a monthly pilgrimage to this spot.  It's top notch.  All of the hype this place gets is well deserved.

I love this place! I also love that's it's a little jewel in the Fishtown/Port Richmond area.

It's really cute inside, the music is always great (if you're into Elvis Costello, Rolling Stones, David Bowie etc...) They have a respectable beer selection and the bartender knows what he's talking about when you ask for info.

I've never ordered something that I didn't think was killer, but the Beef and Onion Pasties are the menu item I can't live without. Insides are tender and delicious, outside is crispy light and it floats in a horseradish cream that's good enough to eat with a spoon.
