Gorgeous urban park which took me completely by surprise.  I didn't approach up the gently sloping Canyon Road; I had trekked up the steep hill to the Capitol, saw this park over the ravine, and climbed down the switchback trail to the canyon floor.  But either way, it's unexpected due to its proximity to the heart of downtown Salt Lake City and the contrast of serenity to the "hustle and bustle" (term used tongue-in-cheek by someone who comes from a much larger city, no offense intended).

The park is landscaped with gently curving and undulating paths and a bubbling stone-lined brook, and organized to showcase numerous plaques and monuments to various Utahn military and civic contributions and sacrifices.  A particular highlight for me was finding quotations by  Wordsworth and Donne on signage near the Liberty Bell replica.  I'm pretty sure that I have never seen John Donne on any park sign anywhere else.

There were only a few dozen people in the entire park; big crowds would be obnoxious here, but I liked seeing just this perfect number of people.  Several of them said "Hello" to me for no apparent reason!  Also, there were several handsome, playful dogs that completed the picture.  I got the impression that some of these people knew each other, and their dogs played together often at this park.  The whole scene just made me smile.  If I lived in SLC, I would come here ALL the time and bring my dog.  Excellent, excellent park.

Sometimes a dog's gotta run free. Break out from society, go their own way, and spend some time with mama nature. That's true for both me an my pooch, and I'm LOVING that we can do that at Memory Grove.

The "freedom trail" is where we go for a quick escape from pavement. It's not an escape from society, because it's always full of like-minded walkers and tail-waggers. Don't expect to spend some silent time communing with nature. You may get a little solitude at odd weekday hours, but not on the weekends. Parking gets tricky/hectic then too.

This trail follows the river along its east bank and allows you to take your pup off-leash. The trail is very well worn, easy to walk and varies from mostly shaded to mostly sunny depending on the section and time of day.

The upper freedom trail is mostly walkers and dogs, but the lower area is also at great hangout for the pupless crowd. The cute little creek that meanders under the bridge, past the manicured lawns before pooling up makes for the perfect picnic spot. Just you, that special someone, a picnic basket, and a bride in her dress...wait..wha? Bride?

Yah...I've never been here and NOT seen a bride getting her bridals or a lovey-dovey couple having their engagement photos done. Am I bothered? Nah, it's entertainment. Just so long as the photographer doesn't get pushy. Also, I've only been here a handful of times and I would venture a bet that the ever present bride phenomenon isn't as common as my own experience would indicate.

Lovely little spot to breathe some outside air, roam with the dog, and enjoy your day.

Great spot for a picnic or hike with the doggy, right downtown.   The front part of the park is grassy, treed, and has City Creek pooling in a pond before it goes underground into the City.  Up front its landscaped and has staues and memorials where special services and memorials are often held to comemorate veterans.  Great frisbee and play catch area.  You can walk to the back of the park and hike up the trails through City Creek Canyon, following the Creek.  Biking popular here, too.  Dog friendly.  At one time Memory Grove was open to cars, but it turned into a sex drive-thru late at night, so it was closed some years ago to cars, but you can take a horse drawn cart through, pick up horse cart in front of temple square, bring shovel and back support.

tip:  go late at night, after a fresh snowfall, on a full moon.  other-worldly beautiful.

A favorite. . . we enter from A street in the Aves down a little path down the side of the hill which scores awesome pics of the Capital at dusk.  Love seeing all the dogs and wedding pics here.  We sit by the creek and talk and then continue our walk through the cute little neighborhood nearby and then up some stairs to the Capital Building, then down North State Street, and into Temple Square.

    Great memories.

Memory Grove Park is dedicated to the memory of Utah residents who fought and died in the World Wars. It is located at the mouth of City Creek Canyon, just east of the State Capitol. Tucked away, off the beaten path, Memory Grove Park features beautiful water and grass areas and lots of trees and plants. It is a nice place for a Sunday stroll or an evening run. It is also a popular place for photographers to shoot bridal and engagement photos. On a visit to the park you're likely to see a few brides walking around. There is also a very nice reception hall at the park, great for parties or receptions.

I lived right by this park on A Street about 1970, and used to go into it nearly everyday. I ... in fact have many memories there, back when there was a small band of merry prankters who would meet there on a semi regular basis and discuss the latest cosmological news. It was a unique moment in space & time. Every now and then when I am in Salt Lake I venture back into the park and remember various incidents that happened at each and every memorial there.

Incidently the first survey/ drawing of Salt Lake City valley ever made, was not by a Mormon but by the great explorer and author Sir Richard Burton.  The picture faces the Title page in his book "The City of Saints." It is fairly obvious that the picture had to have been made somewhere on the hills above Memory Grove.  Richard Burton who is probably one of the few people in that era, who could view polygamy objectively met Brigam Young while he was there. When Brigham Young asked Burton what he thought of Salt Lake City, Burton quoting "The Rime of Ancient Mariner' makes reference to the Great Salt Lake and the lack of alcoholic beverages and says "Water, water everywhere, and not a drop to drink."

Love this place. A perfect spot to escape from the sun for a bit. Also a great place to take a dog and let him play around in the water. There are a lot of interesting little buildings that you can explore.
