Hospitals seem to loom large during life's biggest milestones: birth, major illness or injury and death. The care they provide is supremely important yet they are chronically unappreciated because we're in such a hurry to leave them.
Houston is blessed with one of the best medical facilities in the world in the Medical Center for cancer and other life-threatening conditions. Luckily for me, I haven't had to make use of them for myself and family.
I have, however, found myself at Memorial City for the births of two out of three of our children and for my wife's unexpected major surgery that started out as a simple orthoscopic procedure.
Each time we've spent time there, the staff were professional, friendly and helpful. It was easy to find your way around even though the facility kept getting bigger each time we returned. I wouldn't rate their cafeteria with five stars, but it was fit-for-purpose. They nickel-and-dime you to death with every item you consume, but that's just the way the game is played these days with insurance companies.
Parking is easy and plentiful enough. The gift store entertains the kids when they get really bored. There are good semi-private and private options. One thing I appreciated in particular the last time we were there was that they had enough outlets around the recovery room to meet all of our personal electronic needs (it's truly amazing all the things we keep around us that require electricity).
Although I'm in no hurry to visit Memorial City any time soon, I know they'll take care of me should the need arise.
