This is hands-down my favorite place for appetizers! They have everything from fried ravioli to veggies to hummus to these unbelievably delicious little cheese bite dealies that melt in your mouth and go straight to your heart (and probaly hips too, but you won't care, I promise.)
Atmosphere-wise is pub-ish, laid back, family and adult friendly. I always want to order a pint when I go there, except I don't like beer. They do seem to have a wide selection of beers and wines. Also, their regular menu of sandwiches and meals is pretty broad. But I gotta say, I come for the appetizers.
Specifically, I come for the Irish Nachos. Yep, you heard me, IRISH nachos. And what's that, you may ask. Waffle fries instead of tortilla chips, cheese, jalepenos, tomatoes, etc. And be sure to add chicken for extra-yum. This is one of my favorite nacho dishes in town, and believe me, I scope the nachos!
The BF drug me here, as I kicked and protested the whole entire way cause I had seen the outside of this joint (pretty yuck outside) and there was NO WAY I was going to be able to eat there! I'm just squeamish if the area right outside of the place I'm about to eat at is dirty and yucky. And when we drove up there were cigarette butts on the window seal and all over the ground - I know who cares right? Well cig butts disgust me to no end, I can't explain it so don't ask - but the BF put his foot down and drug me inside anyway. It took me a while to try and block out what I saw before I walked in but I finally did.
So with all the great things on the menu, what did I order - a burger of course!!! I had to play it safe, since this was my first time eating at this joint. But the burgers were really good! (I'ma hamburger freak by the way) Nice and juicy, and big enough that after you eat one you won't eat the rest of the day - that's what I'm talkin' about! :)
We also had these cheese puff things that the BF is in love with. They were really good too. And their homemade waffle fries were so delicious, but then again I love fries almost anyway they come, so maybe they aren't as good as I thought they were, but who cares it's my opinion anyway right? :)
So all in all the food was good. I wish they would keep the smokers from tossing their butts all over the front of their place, but otherwise I may eat here again if I can talk myself up to it!
Fantastic place for appetizers! Although large groups may not find much room here or a way to split the check! (Apparently their computer will not separate and they don't take separate orders at tables, booo!)
But for what they lack in technology they make up for in good old fashion taste! Obviously the Irish Nachos are what stand out here for most, for $9 you get enough to feed three, or dinner for two. Waffle fries, cheese, bacon, scallions and peppers. Between this and their fantastic chicken tenders, this would seem like some other worldly slightly darker version of Chick-Fil-A.
They also have a wonderful selection of beers, and one of the few places to carry Unibroue! And right now they have Dogfish pumpkin ale which goes great with any of the Apps.
Expect the meals to all hover around the $10 range with tip, not including drink, but the food is good, just make sure to sit in the main area near the bar to get constant waiter service.
Oh my gosh... the Irish Nachos are the biggest appetizer ever. A girl friend and I made the *mistake* of ordering the Irish nachos and two entrees. We only made it through maybe 1/3 of the nachos. But man, they're good... not healthy but good.... waffle fries (potato goodness) with jalapenos (I think pickled), cheeses, bacon, and scallions sprinkled on top. You can't go wrong with all that stuff...
I ordered the buffalo chicken tenders with vegetables (you get to pick your side). It's in the appetizer section of the menu, but really, it's an entree. Not bad, but not mind-blowing.
My friend ordered the chicken tender sandwich (basically what I had but in between buns). She only made it through half of it :)
What I like is the neighborhood feel at this place. I saw my boss and a local pastor while here (very rare, since I don't usually run into people I know at restaurants. Maybe because I frequent Asian places. haha). Seems like a good place to go to hang out and have a beer. The waiter seemed to know a lot of folks too, meaning there's a lot of regulars.
All in all, a good place. I'll be back, but won't order as much food next time :)
When I can't finish an appetizer, something's really right or really wrong. I ordered the Irish Nachos (waffle-cut fries, diced jalapeños, and two cheeses, minus the default bacon), and the platter overflowed with goodness.
Note that when I say "goodness" I am not speaking from a cardiological perspective.
Still, I found room to help Jodi wreck a large warm chocolate chip cookie, still tender with a delicate crispness on the outside even though soft scoops of vanilla-flecked ice cream glided on top, crowned with macerated raspberries. This is easily the best $4.25 dessert you will ever eat in Atlanta.
Nachos.
Nachos are an important part of the college student's diet. Nachos, popcorn, M&M and Red Bull are basically what fuels tomorrow's great minds. I know - I'm just as excited about what the future holds! But Melton's is where you will find the most amazing nachos ever imagined.
Yes, they have alcohol and wings, and an absolutely delicious homemade veggie burger (rice/black beans/red peppers)... and other things that bars must have in order to survive: six hundred big screen televisions and each showing a different sports channel, and a covered outdoor patio area for smoking. But I think the most important thing that this unassuming pub has to offer are its nachos.
They have so many options. The Philly Style Nachos are chips topped with sauteed onions, green peppers, mushrooms, Italian roast beef, tomatoes, scallions and sour cream: my husband's favorite. The Chicken and Black Bean Nachos and the Chili Cheese Nachos are exactly what they sound like. The Veggie Nachos are perfect for the vegetarian in your life: sauteed onions, green peppers, broccoli, artichokes, sliced tomatoes, scallions and sour cream.
But my favorite are the Irish Nachos. Imagine Chick-Fil-A's waffle fries (but warm, and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside), covered with shredded cheddar and mozzarella, crumbled bacon and diced jalapenos, then baked. Topped with scallions and served with homemade ranch dressing for dipping. I order it without bacon, of course. (No problem for them.) And (back when I was in college) it was my favorite all-night-er study-fuel. Warm, delicious, melted cheesy, waffle fry goodness. It makes me hungry just thinking about it.
Boy, do I miss college my college days now!!!
Two visits are more than enough to give a 4 star review.
It's just a fun little bar kind of off to itself not bothering anyone.
I like how they have weekly specials.
They have a pretty decent selection of beers here.
Parking can be an issue.
And try your best to sit in the bar area like other yelpers have mentioned. There is much more character in here.
I will try an go back, since it's not the best location it can be easily overlooked.
I had lunch here today and was pleasantly surprised. I am not a big fan of bar food. But this is really, really good bar food with a large variety of selections on the menu. The prices are great too, you can eat here for lunch for about the same price as a fast food restaurant. I am not kidding- it's very good! I had the tuna salad sandwich with a cup of beer cheese soup. It came with waffle fries, which were particularly delicious. Put Chick Fil A's fries to shame.
I may have to go back for dinner.
My wife and I use to go here often when we were dating. Been back several times with the kids. The food is good and I'd hate to call it bar food. I prefer to sit in the bar or side area verses the back area.
Parking can be a bear in the front lot, but there is always room on the side street. I highly doubt you'd be disappointed eating here.
Stick with the burgers. I ordered the veggie plate appetizer, it's some carrots, broccoli and cauliflower with a thing of ranch dressing, not really the homemade dip and steamed veggies i was envisioning from the menu description. I also ordered the pretzels with cheese. The cheese was definitely processed cheese. Stick with the pretzels over at mellow mushroom. My friends got burgers and they were completely happy with their meals.
It has a nice atmosphere, and I'll go back for a quick bite, but I wasn't wow-ed.
One of the least pretentious places around town, Melton's is a fun place to throw back a few beers and fill up on some enticing bar munchies. Whether you're camped in front of the TV for the Braves game or sunning on their pleasant patio, Melton's can provide a satisfying escape from the "hipper," more crowded places in-town.
While the place can be a little too family-friendly for some tastes, there are plenty of options for seating and finding a quiet spot is not hard. The staff are genuine and friendly and it's easy to feel like a regular after a single visit.
The menu is interesting and reliable, and with a large selection for sharing, various options for vegetarians, and yummy late night items, it can please 'most anyone anytime. The beer list, in typical Decatur fashion, is large and thorough and you're sure to find something to fit your mood. The wine list is less thorough and Melton's doesn't carry liquor at all, so if you're a strictly whiskey man or gin-and-tonic gal, you might want to pass by. For the rest of us though, the exciting beer selection, yummy grub, and laid-back atmosphere are well worth a visit.
Some of the best bar food I've had since moving here. Their veggie burger is AMAZING. Waffle fries better than Chick-Fil-A, and they come with a bleu cheese dipping sauce that is addictive as hell. I've had their chicken strips and I they're much better than your average bar strips. The service is always good too. Mike is hilarious :)
The best burger in Atlanta. Yup. I said it, I meant it, and I stand unapologetically behind it. The only problems are that it's not CONSISTENTLY the best burger in Atlanta, and that it's technically in Decatur. But it comes with good waffle fries and a spicy blue cheese dipping thing that I really like or semi-steamed vegetables, which I also strangely like (they're very lightly cooked, so they're the best of the cooked and uncooked world -- stupid-sounding, but try them and see if you disagree). But the burger at its best is GREAT. Just the right amount of fattiness, and they generally actually cook it rare or medium-rare when you order it, which is tought to find.
As previous reviews have said, casual, unpretentious, welcoming, relaxing. Lots of neighborhood families on some nights. And the beer selection is pretty incredible for a place like this. It's where I had my first sour beer.
All in all, they just SHOULDN'T be this good -- the burger, beer, and waffle fries combo is just too good for a place this laid back. I'm confused by the title here, though -- I don't think their appetizers are anything to write home about. (Except the Irish Nachos, of course, which are something special.)
Ahhh, Melton's. I miss you. I need to come visit more often. The food is the definition of bar food, but there's always a place in my heart for this neighborhood bar/restaurant.
You haven't lived until you've tried their Irish Nachos. Waffle fries covered with shredded cheddar and mozzarella, crumbled bacon, diced jalapenos and topped with scallions and served with homemade ranch dressing. Uh yeah ... like I said. They're a must try. The rest of the menu is pretty standard bar fare, and I'm prone to order a couple of appetizers as my meal.
They claim all of their food is made from scratch ... not sure if I believe that, but it sounds good. Melton's serves up a variety of beers, but I go for their mean Diet Coke.
People tend to gather here for study breaks, to watch sports or just to chill on the tiny patio. Good times are guaranteed though.
Once you've familiarized yourself with the menu, you'll find yourself craving Melton's in the middle of daily activities. That's OK. Embrace it and go with it.
The food is way above average at Melton's, and the drink selection is solid. This bar has a localsy vibe. The atmosphere and noise level is accommodating to conversation, and the staff is friendly. That it's survived at a constantly-transitioning intersection for so long is a testament to its appeal.
For me, Melton's sit in a small group of restaurants where I could bring my friends or my family and not be disappointed. Along the Ponce-Scott-Hwy78 corridor, there is nothing else like it.
The best chicken sandwich in Decatur. Actually, the best chicken sandwiches in Decatur - they have several that outclass anything else I've tasted nearby. The Nachos are better than you'll expect, but share them. They are big. The pastas are good, too.
Mmmm Melton's App & Tap is as tantalizing as it sounds:
MELT is for the oozing cheese atop their warm fries, nachos, chicken tenders - what's your fancy? TONs is the amount of mouth-watering potato skins you will want to fit in your mouth at once...APP is for the appetite which will increase exponentially after dining here once & TAP is for the luscious cold beer to wash it all down, as well as the undeniable fact you will return to TAP Melton's establishment again and again....This pub-like restaurant has astonishly tasty and filling appetizers! I recommend Melton's it for a group gathering all the way :)
The best bar food in town can be found in this neighborhood hangout. Personal favorite of mine is the buffalo chicken tenders, which is an appetizer, and I order them as an entree. Great beer selection, far more comprehensive than I need. I've been coming here off and on for about 10 years.
Without pushing the obvious outer limits of the menu, you can't go wrong. Clientele is a cross-section of Decatur, probably one of the most tolerant (and liberal) communities in the southeast. If you bring your own kids to this kid-friendly environment--and kids are very welcome--you might find yourself explaining why Mei Mei has two mommies. Oh yeah, and it's gay friendly, especially for the ladies.
Staff is always friendly and knowledgeable. Can't recall ever having bad service. If you are lucky or come in on a weeknight, the booths near the entrance are the best seating; the side rooms, which have big screens featuring sports on tv, seem thrown together and remind me of a basement rec room. Side rooms should have booths, too, not
just the cheap (but matching) tables and chairs bought at Ernie's Restaurant Equipment Auction.
Melton's App & Tap is a great neighborhood bar with reliable offerings and a low-key atmosphere. On weekend nights when we can't manage the long waits or crowds and Brickstore, you'll find us heading to Melton's where they have about 10 beers rotating on tap and a reasonable selection of bottled beers (no, it's not 10 pages, but it's enough to make you think for a minute). If you're going out with a group, there's not much better than a pitcher of a local brew along with one of their giant (can easily feed 6) plates of nachos.
Fantastic food and they have a rotating tap. What more could you ask for? I am a huge fan of bar food, but it's been quite disappointing finding good places to eat greasy food in this city! I mean how hard can it be to create something oozing with oil and cheese??
I kid, I kid. Melton's wasn't disgustingly greasy, but the tuna melt I got was exactly what I expected out of a bar and exactly why I went there to get it. It's also fantastic for groups with large booths and several rooms and an outdoor patio.
A solid option for comfort food, a cold beer, or watching a game or two...I've been to Melton's a few of times to watch a basketball game and be taunted by my Duke grad friends (I went to a small school in NC that is an annual sacrifice to Duke's hoops team). At Melton's I'll gorge myself on french fries, wings, nachos, and generally all things fried. I've really only ordered items from the appetizer section of the menu...and why wouldn't I? When they put the word App into the restaurant name, I feel obliged to try as many of them as possible. If it's name worthy, start with it...
I've Apped & Tapped many times, and this is a great little place. The beer selection is okay, the service is excellent, and the food is fantastic. Definitely bring some friends to help you eat the amazing Irish Nachos, but save some room for ice cream and a brownie.
I went there one time with a few people and made the mistake of ordering their Irish Nachos to go with my meal. What arrived at the table was a cheesy mountain of cross-cut fries, bacon and jalapeos. It was wonderful and I have ordered it many times since then, but there is no way that any person without a tape-worm can finish a whole plate of them and then continue on to their entree. They have a decent beer selection, but an even better selection of appetizers. I also recommend the breakfast pizza, not sure if they make it all the time or just weekend mornings, but it is gooood.
