I know, I know, I know.
I know, I know, I know!
It's not 1973 any more! It's not cool to eat fondue! It's not cool to have dinner in a shopping mall!
Well, guess what? Screw that. The Melting Pot is awesome.
Mere words cannot overstate how disdainful of this restaurant I was. Only interpretive dance could've done my derision justice. But then we went there. Where was the shag carpet? Where was the bow-wow-chicka-chicka music? Where was the disco ball? Hidden under the modern and sleek furnishings. This is, and I'm not kidding here, *the* place to take a first date. It's full of little nooks and corner booths. The lights are incredibly dim. The cheese is incredibly hot. And because the fondue requires no small amount of concentration and ample opportunities to look like a fool, you never run out of small talk!
The facts: It's in a shopping mall out near Wolfchase Mall, next to World Market. Ordering is complicated: basically, you can get the El Cheapo, the I-Don't-Want-To-Look-Cheap-In-Front-Of-Her, or the Walletbuster. The cheapest is about $35 each, the most expensive about $80 per person. With each menu, you get a melted cheese course, a boiling oil/meat course, and a dessert course.
Bring your credit cards. This place packs a hefty, hefty financial wallop for a fondue joint in a shopping mall.
This is my favorite place to eat in town, and only part of that has anything to do with the food. First of all, its a coursed meal so it takes awhile. If you plan on having all four courses, Cheese, Salad, Meat, and Desert, then plan on staying for at least two hours. This is not the type of meal that your in a rush to complete. The attraction of a place like this is the atmosphere and intimacy. The lighting is low the tables allow a good deal of privacy and the nature of the meal means a lot of communal sharing and the pace of the dinner means a lot of time for conversation. The wait staff is incredibly attentive and the know the intricacies of the menu inside and out. Ask them questions about everything you order and they will give you all the information you could possibly desire. One of the best things about this place is the sauces for the meat course. They make up all the sauces for the meat course fresh. Ask what your server likes the best and have them bring out as many different ones as you want, and ask which sauce pairings work best with each type of meat. I recommend the curry sauce and the peppercorn gravy. This is not the kind of place that you want to take a first date to, as you will be stuck there for a long time and the intimacy could be uncomfortable. It is a very romantic place, but I would not recommend it for Valentines day unless you are going to shell out A LOT of cash. I spent about 300 bucks on a V-Day there because for the entire V-Day weekend they don't have their regular menu up, but a special Valentines course. It is exceptional and includes a lot of high quality food, but its pricey. It also includes some perks like a flower for your lady, champagne, and a gift bag and a picture taken together. The drinks here are excellent, but the wine list here is possibly the best in town. If you are a wine drinker this is the restaurant for you, and they will work hard on paring the perfect wine for your meal. This is also an exceptional place for group family dinners, as they have some large tables with multiple burners on them. They are also somewhat separated from the rest of the restaurant so it makes you feel like you are apart from the rest of the diners. On the whole I cannot recommend this place enough if you are looking for an amazingly intimate, high quality dinner, but you will have to shell out some cash.
