This is an amazing asset to the Louisville community and should be treated as such! Too bad I didn't know the extent of its existence until recently! There are numerous studios selling the wares of local artists. I would definitely recommend going on a day they have an event so more of the shops will be open. I wish more people knew about this and utilized it. It has so much potential, and they have done so much with so little. Check it out and tell all of your friends; it is an absolute must.

I guess I was expecting a little more based on the other reviews.  The facility, however, appears to be a work in progress, so I will try again on my next visit.  The courtyard area was nice with live music but only one restaurant that I could see.

I am a big fan of adaptive reuse of buildings and factories are at the top of my list. I've seen some interesting things along those lines in Emeryville, CA, San Francisco, NYC, and Chicago. This is a former bacon makin' factory and I didn't foresee it turning out so nicely when it was first announced. At that time, I had just arrived back in town and was very keen to find signs of life in my old hometown so I went by the grounds to check out the possibilities. It looked grungy. You could still smell the bacon fat so to speak.

Two years later, I am very pleased with the way that the Mellwood Arts & Entertainment Center has turned out. Who wouldn't be? This is a major shot in the arm for Louisville's arts scene and connects well to what has been happening on East Market St. and Frankfort Ave.

It's imaginative, apparently well-financed, and has the look and feel of a successful artist's colony. There are lots of art galleries, a restaurant, and a spacious exhibit hall (organizations set up booths in here during Forecastle). The musical performances by Sleater-Kinney and Apples in Stereo in the outdoor pavilion area were proof of concept for larger events that may want to locate here.

5 stars for all the creative people and their products inside.  Great variety of unique art items, art supplies, even food.  For an architecture buff, the reuse of the old building is a big plus.  I particulary liked the local aspect highlighted in art featuring horse racing, the Louisville skyline, southern style and of course the local artists.

But only 2 stars for building management's signage and advertising.  I live near here and have driven by several times but still wasn't clear on what was in it.  I had thought it was more of an "entertainment center" as in events, musical acts or performances at specific times rather than a collection of working artists that are there consistently.  On a Saturday that was admittedly chilly and grey, there was almost no one there to shop and a few artists commented on the lack of traffic.

Come on people, promote this place!  It has so much potential, it should be packed every weekend.  How about a wine bar to draw the after work crowd or simply a more inclusive sign visible from the road?

Went to the Heros and Horses Fund raiser which raised money for the Eric Hall Memorial Foundation, named after a great American who is buried at Arlington National Cemetary.Regional breweries such as three Floyds,Brownings,Dogfish, and Kentucky Ale offered their products. The Kentucky Ale Bourbon Barrel was my suprise favorite as the three Floyds Scotch Ale was an expected favorite.Terrific food was provided by Tony Boombozz-Chicken/chipolte pizza and a portobella pizza;Rocky's Pizza spicy meatball;Buckhead's bison chili;and Zanzabar's wings and smoked salmon in puffed pastry.Great event and a great time.

History

Established in 2003

The original Fischer Meat Packing Company building was built in 1904.  During the 1920's, 1930's and 1950's several additions were added to the original structure.  Fischers closed in 2000, and was re-opened as Mellwood Arts & Entertainment Center in 2003.  Today, many of the industrial elements are still visible and have been combined with modern elements to update and preserve the historic building.  As you tour our vast complex, experience the massive rooms with 20-foot ceilings and mushroom columns, as well as smaller rooms waiting to be artist studios that are tucked in an alcove.
