I had read about Mellow Massage in Philadelphia Magazine when they won Best of Philly '08, but never made an appointment. My sort of significant other sent me a gift certificate in the mail for Valentine's Day (it's long-distance, sigh) and I was so psyched! I booked an appointment after a fairly stressful three weeks.
Mellow is small and very cozy, a little hard to find if you're not familiar with the area because the street you turn onto is very small. My masseuse was Natasha and she was amazing. When you come in, you fill out a form and you can specify what areas you would like your masseuse (or masseur) to focus on, which is very helpful. I had a 60-minute full-body massage with aromatherapy, with focus on my back, shoulders and calves (I take two dance classes a week so I know my legs are tired). Natasha was very accommodating with providing deeper pressure and the room was great - the bed was heated and there was ambient music playing. She really worked out all my knots, I could tell when she was focusing on a certain one. It was great and I felt amazing afterward.
They also provided me with water when I came out and they had a candy jar! Free Twix. I'm not sure about the pricing because I did go in with a gift certificate, but I'll definitely go back, no matter what the price.
After participating in a 60 mile bike ride this past Saturday followed immediately by darting up to New York City to visit family and friends, spending the night dancing only to sleep for 4 hours to drive further upstate NY and then driving back to Philly that same night, I needed a massage. I stumbled on Mellow Massage through their website and made a mental note to call in the morning with my fingers and toes crossed that they would be able to fit me in for a same day appointment. They did not disappoint as I was given an appointment for whatever time slot my little heart desired! I was asked if I had a female or male therapist preference which I don't, so I just requested someone who could work the knots out of my neck, back, and legs.
My massage therapist was Damon. He brought me into the reception area which was decorated appropriately with scented oils to one side and relaxing color schemes. We chatted about past injuries and what ailments I have currently that need to be gotten rid of and then we went to the massage room. It was low-light and relaxing. I was really surprised to find that the massage table was heated!
I had requested a deep-tissue massage and Damon did a combo of a sports massage and deep-tissue. It was great. I felt the stress of my weekend melting away along with years of damage that I've done to my body since the last massage I had.
I know exactly where I will be going before and after races/rides/runs to help heal my cranky body!
I got a massage from Mellow Massage today from Shannon. It was by far the best massage I have ever received. Most times I have gotten a massage they always tell you to be cautious when you first rise. Today, this was the first time it really was true. I was so relaxed that when I sat up I had to sit for a few minutes to allow the blood to get to my head. Now that is what I call relaxed! Then there was the receptionist who was also awesome. She explained the mission of Mellow Massage and what to expect. The best part was the price. Compared to other places around they by far had the best price and they offer discounts. Check out the website. They list all the prices and discounts.
