Gigantic and tasty burritos, both their pico de gallo and spicy salsas are unmatched, and friendly family-style service.  I really don't understand the gripes about credit cards: if you find yourself financing a $6 burrito at 30% interest, you really need to re-examine your spending habits.

Worth the side-trip any time you're near the airport - my parents always make it their first stop every time they visit.

Huge portions and friendly service.

More flavor in SF itself, but a great burrito for sheer volume and cheap price.

this review is for the vegetarian burrito.  i asked for it without rice, but didn't realize that i would get an enormous monstrosity of a burrito filled with just tasteless beans and shredded lettuce!  thank goodness i opted for the "super wet" burrito, which came topped with a bit of cheese, a (fairly bland) sauce, guac and sour cream.  visually it was actually quite appealing, that is until you peeked inside the burrito and encountered the mounds of beans and lettuce.  and unfortunately the additional garnishes, while it did lift the flavor quotient a bit, did not compensate for the overall tastelessness of the burrito itself.

sounds like the meat and chicken plates are a lot better, but i wouldn't return for any veggie dishes.  it's definitely worth the extra 5-10 minute drive up to the city (to el farolito, for example) for some tasty vegetarian mexican options.

Food is quick.. Great for the lunch hour crowd.
Space is limited, but food is worth it even if you took it to-go.

Complimentary chips and salsa are tasty and spicy! ( I count this towards the extra $1 they charg if you don't meet the minimum $10 cc charge)

must try: chile verde wet burrito & super nachos.. Bombbbbbb!

No no no no no...! This restaurant does not deserve 4.5 stars based on food alone. It's okay Twoman, we'd never have known if if we didn't try it.

1)Horchata: They use powdered mix, but it was watered down, it did not have the hinty sand texture that runs between your tongue and interior of your mouth when you sip it. There was also not enough cinnamon taste. Horchata, if you've never had it is a mexican drink that tastes like a...yes churro. It is white in color. 1 star. I think drinks, you either make or break. My spectrum isn't that expanded yet. It's a simple thing, when you're mixing water with the powdered mix.

2) Chips. How can you serve stale chips? Brian, maybe the chips weren't stale, maybe they're deep fried tortilla chips like the ones in Guadalajara's. Oh, well, actually these chips were CORN chips. Don't compromise, please Melissa's T. They brought out pico de gallo, and the tomatoes did not look fresh. Yes, I have taken into consideration that it is not tomato season. They gave me a spicy red sauce. Well, given I can eat spicy, but do you know me miss waitress? No. I asked her, do you have the salsa verde? She said yeah. Well if you have it, please offer it to your customers, or ask them what they would like. Chips 1 star, pico de gallo, 1 star, red hot sauce and salsa verde 2 stars.

I couldn't do it, give them a 1 star.

Let me describe the burrito:

I got carne and the weird thing was that even though it was freshly made, the guacamole was not stunning, neither was the pico de gallo inside (of course look above in my description). It was missing cheese. The rice was overdone because the grains were too saturated with water. There was no choice of beans, and the rice just tasted like it was mixed thoroughly with refried beans (which it wasn't though). The size is big of course. But quantity never compensates for quality. NEVER. Melissa's I changed my 1 star to 2 stars, because my definition of 1 star meant making me puke, and it wasn't that bad : ) You should be thankful you have a 4.5 star rating and start living up to that name.

Remember when I was on the fence?
Here I am, thinking I have a decent, nearby burrito venue and then today happens.

Allow me to set the scene:
Me. Late lunch... say mid-afternoon.
Melissa's Taqueria. Completely empty.

I arrive. Quite happy and excited to order my customary burrito.
Go to pay the man at the counter.

"Ten dollar minimum," says he.

"Gimme a small horchata," I respond.

"Still not enough."

I am becoming indolent, "Do you want my business or don't you?"

"Of course, I can add a dollar to it."

I would be causing a scene if I wasn't the only person there, "Or you can make an exception!"

"No, I can't."

I press further, "Do you want my business or don't you?"

"I'll just add..."

"I'm leaving," and then I was gone. Little did they know they'd never see me again.

At first I wondered if my repulsion was extreme. And perhaps I don't understand the psychology behind credit card minimums. So I asked my Jesus-phone... what I learned was phenomenal.

Apparently, Visa and Mastercard's service contracts stipulate that a vendor can NOT require a minimum purchase.
Also, their fees are typically minimal and only increase when volume of sales does so as well. You are encouraged to report companies that require minimums, some may have qualms about hurting independent restaurants, but the heart of the issue remains that they are unfairly coercing us into paying more.
My source is cited below.

http://www.bankrate.co...

I instead went to my favorite taqueria... Taqueria San Bruno, where I had the best experience ever.
No credit card minimums, they accept AMEX and the lady was nice enough to refill my horchata without me asking!

I am severely disappointed with Melissa's Taqueria and will not return.

Really? Really.. Why is it that we've never made the trek over to Melissa's? Now we've overcompensated by going there 3 times in 1 week.... (and sometimes late at night, I hear Melissa's Tacos calling my name.. er.. yeah.. nevermind.)

4 crispy tacos w/ grilled chicken and the works, for under $8, where we get stuffed to the brim, beats the $1 taco truck by a mile because I'd have to order a billion of those; and the taco truck lacks my favorite ingredient.. guacamole.

The super burrito is the same price as the one at the taco truck, but Melissa wins again with the guacamole. Flavors can compete, but avocados are "green orbs of love". The Super nacho is filling and the chips are not too thick, or too thin, and have the right amount of crisp... I split a super nacho and we each had a taco. We barely finished the super nachos and were full..

Their pico de gallo is refreshing and I can never get enough!!

They're speedy, which is fantastic because lunch should be a snap.

After living in Brisbane for 3 years I'm glad to have a "go-to" place for good food.  I love the wet burrito with carne asada.  But I gave the 5th star for the chicken flautas.  YUMMY!  The chicken is tender and well cooked; not dried out like some other places.  The meal comes with chips and salsa and and with an infant and a toddler, it's all about convenience.

I knew this place was going to be a gem the first time I walked in and was greeted by a genial, smiling, mullet-sporting gentleman whom I later found was the owner by the name of Rafael.

Although the carnitas tends to be on the dry side, overall it's great quality, filling portions at roach-coach prices without the gasoline exhaust aroma filling the air.

Their super tacos are a meal unto themselves with generous dollops (did I spell that right...what's a 'dollop' anyway?) of guacamole and sour cream.

Burritos hit the spot and are fairly first class. Service is friendly and like any proper taqueria they have a jukebox filled with mariachi music.

Viva Melissa! (Who is Melissa anyway?)

Excellent burritos - I like the rice and they have a nice blend of rice and beans.  You know, not to ricey, not too beany.  Chicken and carne asada are both good, meat quality is strong.  And they are LARGE, big enough for most people to save half and eat it later, and CHEAP, $5.50 for a super.

The cute waitress has disappeared mysteriously, but the dude who took her place, while less physically appealing to this reviewer, certainly does a more than adequate job.

Oh, and the enchiladas are not bad, either.

UPDATE 10/23/07:  Went back in for a terrific chicken quesadilla.  I don't know how to describe the haircut of the guy at the cash register.  A Pompalet?  A Mullador?  Toss in the salt-and-pepper effect on the close cut sides, and I call it suh-weet.

Melissa's is like five minutes from my house so I am always going there for my burrito fix. The burritos at Melissa's are the best. I had to give them four stars though because they tend to get my order wrong a lot, but its ok because the burritos are to die for. They also have pretty good breakfast in the morning. Oh and if your wondering why its called Melissa's, I was told that Melissa is the name of the owner's (Rafael, a.k.a Mullet man) daughter. =)

they tell me the beans and rice are vegetarian- i guess i believe them. a good place for lunch in quiet brisbane. they don't have a problem with me ordering a vegetarian crispy taco (for some reason, most places in sf won't do this- they always want to make it soft).

when i was in costa rica (heading north to guanacaste), i stayed in this amazing little hotel- tree houses hotel i think it was called. that was cool. anyway, i met this girl in the lobby; she was east indian, living in texas. right away, i knew i wanted to marry her. we (she was with a friend) went on a night hike (which was almost called off due to the rain) and spotted some really beautiful nocturnal animals. i was supposed to have a drink with her later that night, but i ended up drinking too much rum in my room (while listening to morrissey) and i passed out.

Will not disappoint. I recommend this place with every dollar i've come across in my life. Swear by the wet burrito, it can keep you well fed for a long long time. Free chips and salsa, with all orders, even togo. Not a solid joint, concrete joint. I've skipped taquerias in the Mission SF because of parking and bargain Melissa's provides.

With Melissa's Taqueria, what you see is pretty much what you get.  Everything was about what I expected for the location, appearance, and price.  I got the chicken flautas, which were reasonably good.  The service won't knock your socks off, but the guy working the register and also delivering the food got the job done.  If you're looking for a place to get some basic Mexican food in a laid-back environment with no frills, this place will satisfy you.

I was never a big fan of flautas until I had them at Melissa's.  Now I usually look at the menu, think about how tasty some of the other stuff on the menu would be... and end up ordering the chicken flautas.  Again.  There have been moments of weakness wherein tortas, taco plates, super burritos, and various camarones dishes were ordered.  I've not yet been disappointed in any of the food - but if you want the flautas, I recommend eating in.  They are best right when served, just the right level of crunch and no-crunch.  For take out, get something that travels better.
Chips and salsa are provided free, both for dine-in and take-out.  Service is prompt and friendly.
