A friend of mine had always harped on me (or at least adamantly suggested) that I try Mee-Sen's soup. Any soup they make would do. I, being a HUGE Pho fan, was hesitant to try Thai noodle soups for whatever reason. I'm a convert after my recent visit.
The soup I tried was a honey roasted pork with thin noodles. Of course, to get the full experience you have to load up on the condiments (sugar, chili flake, peppers and the red chili sauce that comes with) to make sure you get that thai flavor explosion. After dumping a healthy amount of things-that-make-me-cry in the broth I was rewarded with a sweet and savory experience that kept my taste buds on full alert.
There was a healthy amount of sniffling going on, I teared up once but kept my composure cause I'm a man, dammit. After conquering the soup I felt satisfied with the portions and at 8 bucks it's a damn good deal. Atmosphere's cool, come for lunch and sit at the bar! -

Headed to Pok Pok for their wings? STOP! This place has AWESOME WINGS! YUMMY YUMMY YUMMY YUMMY! Very good!
Also, have you been craving a good meal of grasshopper? Yes, my friend, you can find grasshopper here.
The pork laid on top of the pork wonton soup melted in my mouth. VERY GOOD!
Try the place if you llke to eat yummy food. -

Only been for lunch and I get the large noodle bowls. Delicious. I've had them all. My fave is the pork w/meatballs and thin rice noodles. You get to choose your own broth with your own noodle!
Service is great. Go there now! -

Seriously, this place is great. I live around the corner and find myself going there probably once a week (sometimes just for the basil wings). They specialize in noodles, but I tend to go for the meatier dishes. YUM!

This restaurant is well thought of, but it's still the most underrated restaurant in Portland.
I've toured most of the menu and am rarely disappointed. Recent highlights were the pork wonton soup that was on special for a few months and more recently the short-rib soup that is on special now.
But I've had many other dishes there that I've loved with a very rare dud (the grilled meatballs). -

Yum, yum, yum! Best Thai I've had in Portland. Awesome wings! I want to try everything on the menu...even the grasshoppers. May need a beer or two first...

When you over charge my card $60 and then tell me there's no manager to talk to for a week you get one star regardless of how good your food is.

I love how simple, yet flavorful the food is. Its not your typical Portland Thai restaurant cuisine, so its best to keep an open mind. The Larb Gai Tod and one of the stir fry dishes are two of my favorites. The Salad Rolls are some of the best I've had in this city - large and full of flavor. The deep fried whole tilapia is a fun and delicious experience that I recommend trying at least once.
The service is a bit "casual", but always friendly. The seating is cute and charming, but a little uncomfortable.
I've been there several times and would definitely go back. -

I am a FOOL for this place. I just got hungry thinking about all of the delicious options. Wings (basil sauce), Larb, Pad Kee Mao, Wonton Soup (I've forgotten the Thai name, but it was life-changing); all of it INCREDIBLE. It's truly authentic (fried grasshoppers, friends!) and at times a little questionable to the western palate (grass gelatin, white/pound cake, chipped ice, topped with cherry syrup?), but all-in-all, Mee-Sen is a WINNER. Excellent service and great location!

Since this cute Thai eatery opened around the corner from me, I really wanted to love it. Unfortunately I left very disappointed. Mainly from the terrible service we received. Ordered the Thai wings for an appetizer, which the flavor was great, but were VERY spicy. Because the flavor was good, I didn't let it it bother me, until we received our BLAND main dishes. No spice, tough meat, no flavor. Went from too much to too little. PLUS my boyfriend ordered pork, and received chicken?!! Wtf!?
When we got our check ( with no check in on how our meal was, and forced to ask for water for our scorching mouths) I mentioned to the waiter it should say on the menu the spiciness of the wings. I was blown off with attitude, by a lazy waiter, who was too baked to give a shit.
Disappointed. Go to monsoon Thai 3 blocks away. Much better food and service. -

A friend had been raving about this place for months and I thought "Yeah, yeah, another Thai restaurant in Portland. They are a dime a dozen!"
I was at the end of a 12 hour work day and called to see if she had eaten dinner yet. It was my luck that she hadn't and she suggested we meet at Mee Sen.
We arrived to a restaurant that was about 3/4 full but 2-3 tables were done and cashing out. It took a good 10 minutes before anyone approached us to take our drink order but service was ultra friendly, which almost trumps the wait time.
I ordered the crispy chicken larb salad and it was probably the best larb salad I have had in any Thai restaurant. At the risk of sounding crass, with all the moaning and groaning I was doing others around us may have though there was someone under our table pleasuring me! That wonderful spicy/sweet/sour combination rocked my world!
My friend ordered a noodle soup type of dish with chicken and the chicken was fall-off-the-bone moist and the broth was incredibly flavorful.
The atmosphere is casual in more of a brew pub style than the kitschy style in some Thai restaurants. Very in line with the Mississippi area style and I liked that.
They get a 5+ for food and friendliness but I still think that a server should acknowledge you and take a drink order within the first few minutes so minus 1/2 star for that. This review is actually a 4 1/2 star (wish yelp would allow 1/2 star point system!). -

I love Mee-Sen! Its delicious, authentic thai food. My boyfriend and i just got back from 4 months in Southeast Asia and were so excited to find the food we actually ate while travelling.
The guay teow is amazing. I prefer mine with pork but my boyfriend likes it all ways. The crab friend rice, squid and salad rolls are so yummy too. They also have a great happy hour and the lyche cocktail is to die for. We recommend this place to everyone we know who has spent some time in Thailand and almost every time they cant get enough! If my boyfriend could eat here every day he would. Its a great find in Portland. -

Great food! And a very unique menu! It is not the typical Portland Thai place, but there is still a Phad Thai dish offered for those who are not as adventurous.
Many of their dishes are great, but one that I decided to try is their Phad Thai with fried wontons instead of noodles...it sounded different but I decided to give it a try and I am glad I did. It adds a whole new flavor and texture to the typical Phad Thai, and it is now something I crave when I am in the mood for Thai food.
It is a cute and intimate space and can sometimes be a little busy on weekends around the dinner hour, but the staff has always been very polite.
I had never heard of this place and tried it once on a whim and have been very happy that I did. -

This place is okay. It has really nice atmosphere, cute table seating, and woodwork.
The menu advertises that it can make dishes vegetarian or vegan. I ordered a vegan dish, but then was given a dish with eggs clearly in it. They were relatively apologetic about it, and the waiter said the cooks didn't understand, but I thought it was odd to make that mistake when the menu so clearly states it as an option.
The food was okay. I found the vegan option a bit flavorless, but it was remedied with spice. I think it might be better to get one of their soup dishes as that seems to be their specialty. -
Review from Matt D.
5 star food, 3 star service.
I stopped in here earlier today after hearing so many good things about the place. I was in the area loitering about and when I got hungry, I opted for something new instead of heading to good ol' Monsoon Thai.
The decor of the place is...interesting to say the least. It's almost as if I stepped into some sort of hybrid between a warehouse, a tiki bar and some sort of southeast asian open air market. While this may sound really bizarre, I actually kind of liked it.
After I sat down, it took some time before I was actually delivered a menu. When I finally got a menu, it took them an incredibly long time to come back and take my order. Any interaction I had with the servers was short and very passive. The food still came pretty quick, though.
I ordered the salad rolls and a dish from their "street food" section, but I can't remember the name of it exactly. I think it was number 33?
Anyway, the salad rolls were quite delicious. I have a weird pet peeve about salad rolls where I feel that they should almost never have noodles in them, but rather a collection of fresh vegetables and maybe some sort of protein. Too many Thai and Vietnamese restaurants cram the damn things with loads of rice noodles, but I don't want that. The entire thing is wrapped in a noodle! Mee-Sen's salad roll contained basil, lettuce, cabbage, carrots, tofu and was served with one of the better peanut sauces I've had in quite awhile. Delish!
My main course was really awesome as well. It was a stir fry dish with a chili basil sauce, tofu, and a fried egg. While this sounds like your typical garlic and basil thai stirfry dish (pad prik, I think?), it is much more than that. It was easily one of the most complex stirfrys I had ever tasted; there was a prominent but not overpowering flavor of fish sauce, complimented by a slight heat and awesome vegetal/smoky flavor from the chilis, and all of this was rounded out by a fresh basil flavor. It didn't taste like your normal Thai basil, either. I'm pretty sure they used the Italian variety. It had less of that licoricey flavor and much more of a fresh but nutmeg-like flavor.
Regardless of the weird service, I will definitely be returning for their awesome food. It's a little on the pricier side (no lunch specials), but it is well worth it!Listed in: THE NORF SIDE, I tried to think of a Thai pun…

this is the 3rd time i've gone to this restaurant and each time i go, the service keeps going downhill.
last night, we entered into the restaurant and the servers just don't really seem very happy to be there. no smiles or greetings.. you just seem like you annoy them by entering into the place.. twice- the servers brought someone else's order to our table. no apologies i might add. just a casual shrug.
so the food is OK. they have a lot of potential with the food.. but is the crappy service worth it? i don't think so. i think it's overpriced for what you get. the food has good flavor but i felt the noodles could have been better cooked.
also had a living social coupon and they wouldn't accept it since we had ordered some happy hour items. i was a bit annoyed b/c the living social coupon didn't even state ANYTHING about happy hour. and the waitress still wouldn't accept it. she just casually shrugged it off and said that we should use it the next time we come in..
well.. i have this livingsocial deal still.. and i'm definitely not going back to a place where i'm not appreciated as a customer!
ultimately.. if you want to go to a place where servers don't care about you.. and the food is OK and overpriced.. this is the place to go. -

This place is great. It is full of eye candy from the ambiance to the people then you get your food and that is all yummy too.
Perfect place to meet people get cozy or go on a date.
I like them most for not putting M.S.G. in there food. Where other Thai places on Mississippi do. : (
Unfortunately I have had the past three times be terrible service. Sorry guys. I will go back but I will tell the waiters I Yelp. -

The food was great and the service was attentive, in spite of the bad experience in that regard that some other reviewers have had. I sat outside and my waitress came out often to check on me, both to take my order and after the food was served.
I ordered the Ba Mhee egg noodles with Mhoo Tom Yum: ground pork, meatballs, roasted pork, chile, peanuts and vinegar in a pork broth. It was excellent.
I also ordered the Khao Mon Gai Tod: a crispy chicken breast served with daikon pork broth and a sweet chile dipping sauce. It was also very good.
For an appetizer, I ordered sai oua, a northern Thai spicy sausage. It's made from ground pork, lemongrass, galanga, kaffir leaves, turmeric powder and mild chile paste. The sausage was dry and not as seasoned as I would have liked. -

My favorite new Thai restaurant in Portland. The thing that really makes this place stand out from the other 100's of Thai places here in PDX are the soups and noodle dishes. Portions are healthy, flavors are delicious and the prices are right. I can't ask for more. I've been there 3 times so far and I'll definitely go back in the future.

I am very impressed with how the co-owner handled my previously poor review of Mee-Sen. My visit last month was only a one star experience due to poor customer service. However, Earl the co-owner of Mee-Sen quickly responded to my review with an apology message and a gift certificate. What wonderful customer service! I am impressed! They have definitely convinced me they care about their patrons.
Even though I had a bad experience my first time, I would love to visit again and would suggest you not be dissuaded from my previous experience. The food was very delicious and prices were great! Plus, they have the cutest decor and neat tableware.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Scott N.
The Mississippi Street area has more than one Thai eatery. Seems that most Portland neighborhoods have a number of Thai restaurants. Thai dining establishments have become so common that I think most diners are looking for Thai restaurants that are uncommon. Was delighted to find that Mee-Sen Thai Eatery is a restaurant that distinguishes itself very nicely.
Love the décor of this place. It's almost warehouse like. Cement floors and wood ceilings. There's a large chalk board showing daily specials. The staff is friendly and laid back. The staff may not care where you sit but unlike a lot of other Mississippi Street restaurants they actually care about you. After being ignored at a popular pizza place on this street it was nice to have some attention.
The food here is beautifully plated and oh so delicious. My party had the grilled marinated pork skewers. Large pieces of double skewered pork served with a sweet and sour sauce. We also tried the stewed chicken and rice. Please don't ask me for the Thai name! It was a delicious plate of tender chicken, gravy, rice, hard boiled eggs, mushrooms and sliced cucumbers. Mee-Sen That Eatery's Thai iced tea was the best I have ever had.
Mississippi Street is full of small popular restaurants. People tend to stay a long time at these quaint eateries so finding a seat can often be a problem. You should be able to find yourself a table at Mee-Sen Thai Eatery. This Thai eatery will make you feel welcome and thrill you with the flavors of Thailand. -
Review from Kenny P.
The place is very unique. Very traditional. Not only the atmosphere, but also the bowls, cups, and everything.
They are specialized in noodle. The best there is Kue tiaw Rua, Yen Ta Fo and Tom Yum noodle.
If you are not that hungry, they give you option to have a small bowl instead of big bowl. Of you can order two small bowl and taste more rather than order one big bowl.
The dessert there is quite good. I tried the bread with shaved ice and rose syrup and condensed milk. The thing is the ice is not really shredded. A lot of hard pieces. Also, the syrup and the condensed milk should be more. It's a dessert and supposed to be sweet.
Otherwise, it would be great.....

Since stumbling into Mee-Sen a few months ago, it's quickly latched itself onto my brain, softly whispering to come back, come baaaack. The menu is super varied and I'm having a great time working through it. This ain't your momma's take-out pad thai joint; you'll find the well-trod (let's call them) American Thai dishes listed here but you'll soon find that Mee-Sen puts a wonderful twist on each one. Or just go for the delicious soup bowls (pick your own noodle type!) or I'll recommend the khao pad poo which I just had tonight and can't stop slavering over: at first glance, a simple fried rice dish, but the thing is absolutely brimming with unctuous sweet crab meat, and paired with an intensely savory vinegar/fish sauce that, sparingly applied, pairs the salty and sweet with sour and savory. Really fantastic.
I might also note that these guys take their chillies seriously. I would think twice before ordering something extra-spicy here. I am typically all about heat but Mee-Sen made me cry. Hurts so good.
I'll be back, nom nom. So glad we discovered it. -

I don't get all the praise this place gets. Sure the place is cute, and the wait staff was nice, but the food is horrible. And their rule of charging for meals that are sent back because it is inedible is so uncool that I hope people realize what a crappy place they are and a real Thai restaurant opens in their place.
The portions are tiny and flavorless. How could they make Thai food so bland? We were four people and all got different dishes, and we all were amazed at how just bad and small each one was. Avoid at all costs. -

Dammit, Mee-Sen, you almost had it. But inconsistent service and kitchen attitude is what happens when quirkiness (or whatever you're trying to do) trumps professionalism.
My first trip was out of the blue, me and Brandon were hungry and craving Thai-ish stuff during one of the heat waves from last fall. The service was quick, the food great and we were counting the days until we could justify the kind of irritating trip from King to Mississippi.
Finally we did it. It was cold instead of hot, and that goes for the weather and the restaurant. We get seated fairly quickly by a dude who notified us that he's actually off shift, but he'll get someone for us. Pretty awesome, actually. I deffo try to not work when I'm not being paid to work.
Then.... That's right, the dread ellipsis. I swear we must have sat there for ten minutes while the staff clustered around the bar. One guy walked PAST us to disappear behind a curtain. And smiled at us as he did so. Finally someone on the clock realizes that these motions we're making are "let's go somewhere else" windups. We get menus and they take drink orders. Salvation.
No, not really. The first time I was here I got pad thai, of course. This time I'm really looking at the menu and I see at the bottom "substitutions politely refused."
God DAMN it. Don't you want me to give you money? I wanted to give you money, but for that money I demand what I want and I don't fucking care about your vision, or artistic statement or whatever it is you think you're trying to do. You are not the Holy Grail. Your food is not so pants wettingly great that I'm going to take whatever you feel like dishing out. No matter how politely you claim to do it.Comment from Earl N. of Mee-Sen Thai Eatery 12/26/2010

They got me off to a bad start.... I really was hoping to sit upstairs because I heard it was really rad up there. But they prefer to fill the downstairs first, sadly. I mean, I understand, because why waste time walking up and down stairs using up time when you don't need time.
I just really wanted to eat upstairs.
Lucky for them, the service after that made up for it. Really good service, I've found that hard to come by in Portland, especially in hip neiborhoods like mississippi.
The food was great, I had one of the dishes that was advertised as being chinese street food. I loved it.
The beer selection was mediocre, but good enough that there was at least a couple good choices.
Overall, the food and the atmosphere were really good and was somewhat deserving of the prices.
I say go there, do it! -

I've usually liked the food, but damn those boys are sassy! I could do without the sass. Even though you can sit where you'd like, they prefer you wait so they can tell you that themselves. Don't walk in like you've been there before & attempt to head to your favorite seat- it makes them uneasy.

Heard good things from many people about this place.
I like the decor of the place. The service was casual, quick and attentive. I don't like to demote a restaurant whose bottled beer is not cold but I do feel it should be noted.
Our food arrived amazingly fast and I liked both dishes - Pad Kee Mao with tofu could have been hotter. Next time I'll remember to specify that it be hotter since I was not asked. It was full of spice and left a good aftertaste in my mouth making me want more.
Khao soi gao was an unexpected pleasant dish with a well cooked chicken quarter with the scrumptious chicken waiting to be plucked from the bone. I was surprised to find a huge pile of noodles hiding under the chicken and the extras that come on the side really added to the whole taste experience. -

The Mississippi neighborhood is really growing on me. I've been spending two Saturdays around that neighborhood just to check out local shops and of course restaurants.
My dearest friend and I stumbled upon Mee-Sen. We came there for their happy hour. Yes, they have happy hour even on Saturday from 3pm - 6pm and then 9pm - closing time. I like their outside seating area. Those box tables are adorable and how clever to put umbrellas on them.
For happy hour, they have $4-$6 food menu. You can also get their Small size noodle bowls for 50 cents off. I decided to try their flat rice noodle with Yen Ta Fo (fish ball, slice of fish, shrimp, and Wonton). My friend got the happy hour Pad Thai for $5 and we split the Happy Hour Wings (5 pieces for $4).
Our food came and the small size of noodle bowl is small. This is the first time, I ordered small and it is actually small. The vegetable in the dish is Ong Choy. It's like Asian version of spinach, but it has crunch to it. I ordered my noodle dish in dry version instead of the soup version and at first the red sauce tasted like spicy version of Ketchup. After few bites, the sauce grew on me. I actually like the dish.
My friend loved her Pad Thai with tofu. She got a lot of Pad Thai for $5. Both of us love the Chicken Wings. The sauce was amazing. It's a bit salty, but I think that's how they want it to be. It's garlicky, salty, and sweet. It was one of the best Chicken Wings in Portland for happy hour.
Our check came and my total bill was $6.50 and that's after we split up the cost of the Chicken Wings. I didn't have anything else to drink
besides water. I'm glad that even when my pocket is dry, I can still indulge in delicious creations here at Mee-Sen. I will be back to try dinner here. This place is as authentic as Thai in Portland can get. -

First off, the decor in Mee-Sen is very cute and fun, interesting but in no way stuffy (little metal cups, self serve chopsticks at each table) - you wouldn't feel uncomfortable making yourself at home here and staying awhile for drinks and conversation (always a plus in my book). I visited for lunch on a whim, and I would definitely like to go back and try more of the food. Lots of dishes (the sort of create your own noodles especially) you don't always see at Thai eateries along with some staples like Pad Thai and Larb.
I ordered from the noodles menu I spoke of and had Sen Yai (flat rice noodles) with Yen Ta Fo - essentially a seafood soup with a spicy sweet broth. I wasn't completely crazy about the broth, it tasted a lot like the store-bought sweet chili paste to me, would have enjoyed just a bit more complexity. It was still good though. My fellow lunch-goer had Pad Thai which I tried and it was very good (Pad Thai is one of those dishes I judge a restaurant by since it really is such a staple everyday food in Thailand). The full bar was inviting, with drink specials on the chalkboard that sounded delicious, and it looks like they have a pretty good happy hour.
To top it off the service was super-duper friendly and welcoming. Can't wait to try more here! -

Truth be told, I absolutely love Thai Ginger, but now that I've graduated from college, I feel awkward coming back to a place where I've seen my History professor twice on different occasions. Here comes Mee-Sen Thai to save the day! Came here for a friend's birthday and was excited to see that they had an awesome selection of thai food for a very reasonable price. Wanted to try their khao pad poo but I stuck with my go-to dish and had the pad kee mao. It was delicious and filling and I was very pleased (: My new favorite Thai restaurant even though the service is a little wonky :p

Every restaurant has it's strong suit - Mee-Sen does noodles. Most of their dishes come with a noodle preference, and each kind comes coated with the right balance of flavor, not too greasy, nor over-saturated. The BBQ pork is also recommended for it's tenderness and flavor balance. I haven't been as impressed with the soups.
The atmosphere is warm. I ordered a special with pad thai in the name, the server explained the dish wasn't a traditional take on the old favorite. During the explanation I realized there were deep fried components I probably wouldn't like. Good service is setting and exceeding clientele expectations.
Mission accomplished Mee-Sen! -

There are two places in this 'hood to get Thai food...the other being Monsoon. This is a trip because I don't like the noodle dishes at Monsoon but they are supremely good at Mee-Sen. They do the roasted game hen well...not quite as good as Pok Pok but definitely closer (and proximity means a lot to me folks). They added this sausage dish to their specialty menu...snag some sticky rice with it...good stuff.
Service quality has been mostly stellar from the vast majority of the staff. Although our first experience was pretty shaky to say the least...and we nearly didn't go back for that reason. It must've been a hiccup though...since then, nothing but excellent.
The menu is pretty limited. It's different Thai than most places serve around here. Don't expect an extensive list of curries or the like. It's not from that region (someone step in...I have no idea which region it IS).
Good stuff. But I'm tellin' ya...noodles...it's the noodles. No one does noodles like they do. Not just for the neighborhood or compared to Monsoon...I mean, I'd rather just eat their noodles...PERIOD. That's sayin' somethin'.
It's not cheap. Bye.Listed in: M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I

I love this place! My husband wanted to come back 2 weekends in a row cause is in love w/ some deep fried fish. it comes w/ the head on and i swear it's beady eye was looking at me funny. we asked them to cut the head off and they were cool about it! I love the noodles, so good! We've been back a few times and brought others with us. When my brother was in town he had the pad thai and said it was just OK.
We've had great service each time we've been there, but we've had the same person each time.
Seriously good noodles! -
Review from Anuj K.
The thai food here seems more... unique. I have been to Thailand, but not for very long so I didn't get a good taste of the night cuisine and street food.
I appreciated that they have smaller servings of the noodles, and there are plenty of vegetarian options. It also makes it a little more affordable and a good place to stop for a snack if you're not too hungry.
