Tasty Greek basics at a reasonable prices in large quantities. That's a combination for repeat visits in my book.

The gyros were among the best I've had in the finest city and the beef kabob was very moist and tender.

More of that bomb pita would be nice, olives on the salad were too mushy and  salad was a bit light on the feta.  Otherwise great meal at a good price.

Note that if you have a groupon the owners consider the dinner for 2 a special offer and so the groupon may not be "combined" with special offer. I thought that was lame since its a standard menu item and wasnt excluded on the groupon. But hey I guess if they further discount that much food they'll be losing money which doesnt work. But the groupon so should clearly say the dinner for 2 is not covered.

Yummy Yummy! Looking for a meal thats delicious and healthy? go to Mediterranean Cafe! This place is good! 3.5 stars for sure!!

So Ill be honest, I really only have gotten a couple of things here. Ive had their gyros, and their gyros salad and the dinner for 2. yes, it also has gyros. For 20 clams you cant go wrong with it! everything is served with huge portions!

Oh the blessed dinner for 2! you get a huge salad, baba ganush, hummus, dolmas, falafel, rice, kabobs of chicken and beef, gyros, and pita! Delicioso! (but in greek instead of spanish). my better half and I always order it and we always have leftovers. We have only gotten it to go, and its always ready when they say it will be.

This place is cute, nice friendly staff who clearly know what they are cooking and how to cook it. Everything is made with love. you will be pleased.

We visited this place based on the ratings and descriptions here on Yelp and weren't disappointed. What you get for the price is just incredible, in both quality and quantity.

All the prices were good, but like a lot of people, we got the $19.95 special for two. Two is a little pessimistic, this meal could easily be split three ways, if not four. You'll likely be taking home quite a bit, and if it's as good the second time around as it was the first, you won't be sorry.

The meal starts with a Greek salad with warm pita and tzatziki. The salad is monumental. Greek olives, shredded carrots, feta, tomatoes, and cucumbers on romaine. Dressing (olive oil and red wine vinegar) is on the table. The produce was incredibly fresh, not a hint of wilting. Every salad should be this fresh. It'll keep you plenty busy while you're waiting for the main course.

If you think the salad is impressive, wait until you see this. It's served on a platter the size of a side table. On it are a chicken kabob with zucchini, a beef kabob with bell peppers and onions, a huge pile of sliced roast lamb, two full loaves of warm pita, a generous serving of both hummus and tabbouleh, a heaping pile of crumbled feta, two large felafel balls, two dolma, two cups of tzatziki, and the meats are on a bed of rice pilaf.

The dolma was a little softer than I'm used to, but tangy and delicious. The hummus was creamy but needed a little seasoning. I make good hummus so I'm quite picky about it. A little olive oil and salt made it perfect. Everything else was pure perfection. The chicken was tender white meat, grilled perfectly. The beef kabob was, in fact, steak, cooked a tender medium. The lamb was literally the best I've ever had. It was so tender I could cut it with my fork. The extra-crispy felafel reminded me of hushpuppies. I found everything else to also be very tasty (which was kind of a relief as the last Greek place I reviewed on Yelp, Kojack's in Mission Beach, managed to serve the sorriest excuse for rice pilaf I've ever put in my mouth).

The one thing I got that I wouldn't get again was my drink. I got iced tea and found it rather weak. It's the only thing other than water that you can get refills on, though, because they don't have a fountain.

We finished off our meal each with a piece of baklava. They serve your choice of walnut or the more exotic pistachio. I jumped at the chance to have pistachio. We traded bites and they were both wonderful, but I love, love, love having the option as pistachios are my favorite nut.

The atmosphere was nice for a small, inexpensive place. Warm and inviting, but very casual. Uptempo Greek music plays quietly from a stereo. The restroom is neat and clean. Our server was helpful and friendly.

I have a box filled to the brim with another meal waiting in my fridge, and I'm genuinely looking forward to it. This just became my Greek place. Thanks, Yelpers!

This is the 'go to' place for my wife and I.  Seriously, we get take out at least once a week.  For the price, this place is freaking great.  My wife usually orders the hummus and avocado (it isn't on the menu any more, but they'll make it for you if they have avocado's on hand).  It sounds like a bit of a weird combo, but it is awesome.  I really like the half chicken plate w/ rice.  You can't go wrong with the Kabobs either.

One last thing, it kills me to see people give this place a poor review because of the lady behind the counter.  She is seriously so damn nice.  I can see the service being slow on a busy night for dine in, but keep in mind that she has the entire front to take care of (eight or nine tables?), plus take out orders / phone orders.

This is really fast, really inexpensive Mediterranean food.  But it ain't cheap fast food.

You go up to the front, order, pay and sit down like any "fast food" restaurant. My food literally arrived at the table in under 4 minutes.

The food is solid and the prices are *very* reasonable - bordering on a steal. Especially when you consider the portion size. I ordered the veggie delight plate which came with hummus, tabbouli, rice, dolmas, a greek salad (omit the feta if you're vegan), falafel, and a two large pieces of hot pita bread. The rice, seasoned with dill, was unlike any I've had before, but it was fantastic. Total was only $8.95 and the food was delicious. I'll definitely be back.

As a side note to all my veg*n friends, MedCafe is VERY vegetarian friendly and most dishes can be veganized by leaving off the feta or asking them omit the tzatziki sauce. The staff is especially friendly too.

My roommate and I were trying to decided where to eat and ended up looking at Groupon Now and there was a daily Groupon for this place, so we thought we would try it...Great choice for some Mediterranean food!  The portion sizes or big, plenty of food!  One of my new top favorite places for Mediterranean food.  I had the beef kabob and gyro plate, the beef and gyro were cooked perfectly, not dried like I usually find at most places. On top of the food the service was great, the little blonde lady was super nice!  For sure a repeat customer!!

I initially came here because there was a Groupon Now promotion: $8 for $16 worth of food. I ordered over the phone for take out and got the Dolma appetizer and Greek Gyros Salad.

The Dolma wasn't quite what I was expecting as the last Dolma I had was made by an Assyrian friend's mother (which was served hot and had rice, spices, and meat within). The Dolma at Mediterranean Cafe is served cold over a bed of lettuce and is rather wet. It also came with a large amount of warm pita and a side of tzatziki sauce which was unexpected but welcomed! The Greek Gyros Salad was huge. It came with a side of tzatziki sauce for the warm pita included, and the aegean dressing also came on the side. The gyros meat was good but was not as flavorful as some of the other Greek restaurants I've experienced in the past which is why I am giving this place only 3 stars.

I will say however that the staff was extremely friendly and had that mom & pop attitude about them. The gentleman that rang up my order had an authentic accent and seemed like a proud business owner. Unfortunately there is also no parking lot here, only one for El Cuervo (mexican joint) right next door, but for the purposes of picking up a take out order, you can park there and run in to get your food, then dash with no problems!

HUGE portions, super attentive and friendly staff, delicious food! Hummus and pitas to start, so good. Some of the moistest Gyros I've ever had. Beef skewers were the perfect medium rare. Reasonable prices, eat in or to go orders...new fav Mediterranean spot in Hillcrest.

You should go here.  No, really you should.  The price, the service, and--most importantly--the food is all spot on.

I could end the review here, but I won't.

So, we strolled on in, sat down, perused the menus and put in an order for 2 glasses of wine.  House wines are $4 and quite lovely, and my $5 cab was also delightful and worth the extra buck.

We ordered the Dinner for 2 (which is a STEAL at $19.95) and were promptly delivered warm, fluffy pita and a huge Greek salad.  The salad was fresh, crisp, and covered in feta crumbles.  I dug that I could add the amount of dressing I wanted from the handy caddy on the table--so many times pre-dressed salads are glopped on dressing bombs which makes me sad.  Though the tzatziki on the side was refreshing, it needed a bit more of a punch, in my opinion.

But then came a platter the size of a rottweiler filled with everything you could possibly want.  We're talking more pita, creamy but a tinge bland hummus (remedied with a dash of olive oil), 2 crispy and unctuous falafel, a perfectly herbed tabouli, 2 standard tasting dolmades, a lovely herby rice...and that's not even the main attraction: MEAT.

Sitting atop this mountain of side dish yum was the most perfectly cooked chicken kabob ever, a (tinge dry but still tasty) beef kabob, and the most tender and perfect gyro I've ever had.

We took a ton home in a takeout box and spit the key lime pie.  And yes, it is as good as everyone says.  Not too sweet, plenty flavorful, and an ample portion for the price.

Service was delightful.  I see all of these Yelper's complaints and I scratch my head.  Though our server was overworked, manning tables, answering the phone, and ringing up takeout orders, she always stopped by when the time was right to check in on us, was incredibly friendly, and even chased after us when my forgetful man left his phone on the table.

    So, yeah.  Go here.  YUM.

How have I lived in Hillcrest for two years and have never eaten at this amazing place?

Hidden on a very unassuming block on the edge of Hillcrest/Mission Hills, is this amazing little greek gem.

Unlike Daphne's down the street, the food here is authentic and flavorful; as opposed to fast food processed and dry.

We ordered a "dinner for two" for $19.95.  First the salad arrived and was a very nice, large greek salad with tahziki dressing.  Everything was very fresh and the olives were amazing!  Then came the platter and all I can say is OMG!  Fresh pita and hummus, greek salad, rice, a chicken and steak kabob, fresh gyro, falafel, and a ton more.  Was way more food than my boyfriend and I could ever eat, and so flavorful.

And the ambiance is also very cool.  When you step into this location it's like you're stepping into a scene from "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" (and I totally mean that in a good way, btw).

This is a place I will definitely visit again!  I can still taste those warm fresh pitas.  Mmm...delightful!  You should definitely check this place out!

If you like Mediterranean food and looking for a good price, I recommend this place. They have a great special for two for $19.95, which is A LOT of food. I had leftovers for dayyyys!

Typical cafe ambiance, they were short staffed when I went, so the service wasn't that great, but it's unfair to judge since there was only one person working besides the cook.

Food was good, not great. The appeal of this place was definitely the price, but if you are craving Mediterranean and happen to be in Hillcrest, you should check it out.

Thank you Cat A for turning me on to this place...We had the dinner for two and if you check-in with foursquare it's $17.99!!!

Freshly baked pita, large Greek salad, hummus, falafel, tabouli, Dolma, feta, rice, gyros, chicken kabob, beef kabob.  I took all this yumminess to go and enjoy at home.  Boy o Boy....that was a mighty tasty and satisfying meal.  I was actually doing the happy dance.  My BF is a big eater and we still had left overs for lunch the next day.

I can't wait to go here for lunch and bring the co-workers, I really want to try that lemon chicken soup.    Staff was super friendly and they deliver!!! Bonus!! If you order on-line, you get a free dessert if it's over $20.

I love everything about Med Cafe (this is how i have it programmed in my phone for easy access when i have a craving!)! I have been dining here for the last 10 years, and there has NEVER been a time that the food and friendliness of the staff has fallen short of my expectations. They are extremely consistent with the quality of their food, so I always know I'm going to get a delicious meal. 99% of the time, I order the Tofu Greek Salad... tons of romaine lettuce, fresh tomatoes, carrots, super flavorful tofu, feta, cucumbers, and wonderful balsamic dressing. It also comes with soft, delectable, freshly baked pita bread, which I love to slather with their homemade tzatziki and a piece of tofu...This makes my taste buds very happy!

Also, the owner couldn't be any kinder and more helpful than he is...he really cares about his customers and it's evident in everything that comes out of his kitchen. He also takes time to talk to me and makes me feel so welcome! I always leave there feeling great! LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!

The place was cute and I really wanted to like it, but the gyros pita I ordered was SWIMMING in tzatziki sauce and that was all I could taste of the meal.

Also, the music they were playing sounded like Mexican or South American music which kind of ruined the ambiance for a Greek restaurant.

My boyfriend and I were walking by on the way to study at Coffee Bean down the street... I may not have noticed Mediterranean Cafe just walking by, but he was immediately enticed! The decor inside felt more Italian (the vines and huge case of wine!), but overall a cute and cozy neighborhood gem.

We ordered the gyro & beef combo, which came with a side salad, rice & pita bread. The gyro was DELICIOUS -- so tender, full of flavor. The beef, however a tad dry... but we were quite happy with the meal. It was huge and we were both stuffed just sharing.

The customer service was also fantastic! The server was super friendly and sweet. She told us we had to wait about 10 minutes for the food (we took it to go), but the wait was actually only about 5 minutes. Also, we checked Yelp and saw that you get a free slice of Key Lime Pie if you mention Yelp -- AWESOME. I never liked Key Lime Pie before, but this pie was sooo good. Sweet and light with just a tad of tartness.

I'm glad I live nearby... I will definitely be dropping in again. Maybe to try to dinner or lunch for 2 deal!!

I've had delivery from this place several times and was generally pleased with the speed and quality. However, this last order has completely soured me on this place.

I ordered a soup, gyro salad, and falafel wrap for delivery. After over an hour I called to check on my order. The owner was very apologetic as it turned out the delivery guy was still 30 minutes out. And when the food arrived it was lukewarm and terrible. The owner told me he'd take care of me on my next order if I called him instead of ordering online, that he'd throw in a free pie slice or something. Well as it turns out, I'm not a moron and remembered that the eat24hours site offered a free slice of pie as a coupon anyway. This was just a poor attempt at insulting my intelligence, and the reason that I won't be ordering from this place anymore.

I've been here for lunch twice in the last week and definitely did not get tired of their food. I had the gyro sandwich which is excellent because the thick slices of meat are moist and succulent. The sauce goes well with the flavor of the meat and the fresh toasty pita. The meal comes with a side salad and fries that are both pretty average, but the sandwich still shines.

Definitely come here if you like mediterranean food and want to support a local place instead of a chain like Daphne's nearby. They have various yelp promos which is awesome, and I can't wait to come back again.

    Surprisingly awesome!

The food is incredibly cheap and filling.  The falafel is a little overdone, but that is more likely just my preference and you might like it more than I do.  Their meal platters are delicous and worth every penny.

Oh, and they have the best baclava I've had from a restaurant in San Diego.

As far as mediterranean food that's more on the Greek side, this is my spot for sure..

Been coming here for years on and off and what I really appreciate is the consistency, Everything I've had is really tasty. I love the vegetarian plate, the salmon salad is one of the tastiest I've had anywhere, and if you like the carne, the gyros and chicken kabobs are bomb. Oh, and the brand of tea they use for the iced style is really refreshing.

After re reading my review, I think I'm gonna head here for lunch today

A very small restaurant with maybe 10 tables. It's definitely one of those "neighborhood" type places where if you come enough, the owners will know you by name.

The food here is okay. Some of the of food was overly seasoned with way too much dill. My husband and I ordered the dinner for 2 for $20. It came with a whole bunch of food on a platter big enough for a turkey! Huge portions! My husband and I had left overs. However, our 2 guy friends also shared their own dinner for 2 and they cleaned the entire platter!!

The steak and chicken kabobs were tender, but our friends said theirs was overcooked and dry. My husband LOVED the lamb though. I thought it was good and not overly seasoned like other places.

The service was fine. Didn't expect much from this type of place.

Just like anywhere else, they have their off days, but most of the time the food is exceptionally good and always prepared fresh. I love the beef kabob and hummus combo. The hummus is delicious and the pita bread it's served with is homemade. I don't know what kind of seasoning they put on their fries but YUM!

My boyfriend & I had the dinner for 2 ($22.00) so much food. This is plenty of food for 2. You get a little taste of it all, and it all tasted so good. I ordered the lemon chicken soup. It was a pretty big bowl of soup that came with more pita. I didn't know what to expect with the lemon chicken soup. I didn't find the taste of lemon overwhelming. I can't compare to others lemon chicken soup but I liked it.

As for the plate for 2 it came with so much food as you can read on the other reviews. My favorite was the chicken kabob and gyros. The beef kabob was a little rough and chewy.

Overall all the food was good. The service was good. The guy working kept asking if we needed anything.

Awesome Mediterranean food!!! I got the gyro meat and hummus plate with a greek salad and it was supppper delicious! The gyro meat was very flavorful, the herbed rice was nice and fluffy, the hummus was nice and creamy, and the salad was fresh and topped with feta and greek olives. They have this incredible deal for $19.99 and you can get a whole crap load of food for two (really 4 people in my opinion). You get a large greek salad, then a plate with pita bread hummus, tabouli, chicken kabob and beef kabob, dolma, rice, tsaziki and I'm sure I forgot a few things, I saw the table next to me order it and I couldn't believe how much food you get for that price. My hubby and I are definitely going to have to order that next time.

I learned of Mediterranean Cafe on Yelp when looking for places in my area that deliver. Today, I was craving a wrap I used to get at a Falafel shop in Downtown SF. It was a salad wrap with a couple of falafel inside. I called and got the owner on the phone, and he said he knew exactly what I wanted, and that he would accommodate me even though there is nothing like that on their menu *yet. When I picked it up, he was very friendly and said that he loved my order because he'd been wanting to put something like that on the menu for a long time.

I give four stars for the sandwich I had and for the experience. I will definitely be trying them for delivery. Also, I can see myself coming here for a quick bite with a pal. It's inexpensive and healthy.... and a nice change from Taqueria food.

Good gyros are the equivalent of soul food/fried rice/pot pie in my book. After ingesting said gyro, you feel full and at peace with the world. This pretty much sums up how I feel after a gyro at Mediterranean Cafe. Tons of meat, with tasty pita, and veggies, all without greasiness.

After the gyro is safely tucked away in your stomach, take a breather, and then order the key lime pie.  Or geez, if you're *really* full, at least get it to-go! They give you a huge piece. Killer. And they have it year round. Every. Single. Day. Love it!

I've been here several times (as it is convenient to my house) and the food and service are consistent each time. True, it's more of a take out place than a sit-n-stay-awhile place, but hell, when you've got a tasty gyro to concentrate on, who really needs ambiance? Not me!

I am so glad I was walking down the street looking for lunch and I walked into this beauty.  For my first visit, I was craving lemon chicken soup and I decided to try a falafel.  I never had a falafel before so I had no idea to expect.  Well, I don't like falafel, but thats ok because their lemon chicken soup was BOMB.

For my second visit I ordered my lemon chicken soup and had a gyro sandwich instead.  So good I could not finish it!  I took it home.

For my third visit, I ordered my lemon chicken soup, a tofu greek salad and french fries.  The guy (owner?) was worried I would not be able to finish because he knew it would be a lot of food and added a note to put my salad in a take out box.  I warned him though that I eat a lot so maybe I'll finish it.  I finished my soup, fries and about 2/3 of my salad.

Owner: so how'd you do? (when I asked for a bag and fork to take my salad home)
Me: oh not too bad, I finished quite a bit of it.  I ate all the tofu, cucumbers, and tomatoes.
Owner: here give it to me.

I thought he was gonna bag it up for me with my fork but he was so sly, he took it back into the kitchen and filled my salad back up to full!

Owner: here, now you have dinner! :D

    *heart*

Average food quality not worth the atrociously rude customer service. You don't have to take my money if you don't want to.

Tried using the groupon they had here and it was a very difficult experience. They also didnt get my order right  by leaving out my sides. Food was good but I will not be coming back. There are plent y of greek places that dont skimp on the tatziki or tomatoes and value their customer service. Dont even have the energy patience to call back and let them know.

The food is amazing, the service however is horrible... there is just one person and she is rude, doesn't help you. I will go back only for the food.

I was excited to go here, and the minute I walked in the restaurant...I knew I should have left. First, ill start off by saying that the food was good, it was great actually...I stuffed myself full and still was able to take some home.

But our waitress....I have never experienced such a bad waitress before!!! When we walked in the door (@ 8:15pm) she didn't even say hi, she looked at her watch and said "we close in 45 minutes" and handed us menus, in a very unpleasant tone. okay..... So we were waiting, and my boyfriend had to go up and ask her if we could get some water. Then our water glasses were empty, and she kept walking by, and she was in such an unpleasant mood, I didn't want to bother her and ask for more, so my boyfriend got up once again. She looked so annoyed and bothered; she left the whole water pitcher at our table, just so she wouldn't have to come serve us again!!

When we were finished, she handed the check, didn't say thank you, goodbye, or anything.

Thanks to her, I will never be returning.

No frills here, just some darn good tasty food.  Came in here courtesy of Uptown Mag's coupon with my BF -- "$17.95 dinner for 2" but it was enough for 4...it's normally $19.99.  Geez Loueez, we had a ton of leftovers! It came with an excellent variety of Mediterranean cuisine -- yummy hummus, greek salad, 2 entrees (chicken & salmon), delicious pita bread, rice, baba ganoush, falafel, a mountain of feta cheese and olives galore.

Service was okay.  There was only one lady waiting tables and we came at an odd time so the place was empty.  It took her some time to get us water and normally I wouldn't care but I was super thirsty and the salads came out before the water.  It looked like they had a lot of people calling in orders for pick-up which  I think I'll do next time.  The ambiance was mediocre but the food made up for it.
