Ok, I can only testify for the waxing here which is amazing but the general atmosphere of Mechanique is very cool. The place is so chic that there isn't even a sign above the door!
Lori is my waxer and has won Best of Boston in the past. I used to get Brazilians but lately have been getting the "tweener" which is in between a Brazilian and a bikini wax. Lori is fabulous- discreet and as painless as your gonna get!
The price isn't bad either- I think it ranges from 20-35 depending on what you get done. Happy waxing!

I needed someone who could style my hair in finger waves for my wedding. After calling easily 50 salons on Newbury and getting people who either didn't have Sunday hours or had no idea what I was talking about, I was able to get an appointment at Mechanique.
Jon Paul, the owner, did my hair beautifully for a really reasonable price and was an absolute sweetheart. The shop has a comfortable atmosphere; it was like going to someone's house.

I get my hair cut by Lynn at mechanique and she is awesome! She gives me great, easy care hair cuts, jsut like I like it. I barely even have to brush my hair and it still looks good! I have been going to her for years .
The salon is really cute and friendly too!
This review isn't as much about Mechanique as it is about Magdelene, one of their stylists. (But don't get me wrong, this salon is great too, nice people, good facilities, etc.) Magdelene is excellent, I've been a customer of hers for many years and through a couple of different salons in which she's setup shop. She's professional, fun to talk to, has great stories and opinions, and gives a great haircut!

Top-notch haircut.
Highly recommended.
Magdelene cut my hair. She was excellent and professional.
She came recommended by a friend and it worked out great.
Magdelene took the time to learn what I wanted in a haircut and she adapted to the way my hair grows and looks. That is much better than the terrible haircuts I get for $15 from neighborhood barbers who deal with me as a cookie-cutter would.
Note that I am male and I hesitated to use a frilly girls' salon. This place is frilly, in my opinion. It caters to women (no wonder, they care more about hair). The greeter directs you to a dressing room to remove your shirt and don a black komono / cape. Men, just say no! ( I did) When they offer you a cappucino or a spritzer, just say no! (I did and next time I will bring a beer).
Women were gossipping everywhere, talking about their husbands, children, and beauty routines. I felt like an anthropologist on Venus.
I recommend that fellow men bring a Blackberry or Treo and bury themselves in answering email whie waiting. Turn your Bluetooth on so we can create a LAN or something that the women do not know about.
But my friend (also male) gave a strong recommendation. And the haircut is the best I have had in years. My usual Italian barber gives the same old haircut he gives everyone for $15 in 10 minutes. But he gives me wiry hair on top and a mullet out back. This haircut was totally different.
This haircut was $50 and took 45 minutes. The stylist made the hair look better than ever before. She explained the extra training that a stylist gets compared with a barber and why she was cutting my hair in certain ways. A month later, it still looks great.
If you are male and want a GREAT haircut, put on a Harley Davidson outfit, bring a 6-pack, and go here regardless of the frilliness, in my opinion.

A superb cut by Jean Paul.
This hard to find salon is a small gem on Newburry street.
If you want more than a short back and sides with a razor you would be hard pressed to find a better haircut for the money.
Very friendly, very professional and all about giving you an excellent cut.

Back when I still had some spare disposable income, I always went to Jon-Paul to get my hair cut. It's a relaxed, funny salon (lots of chrome tables matched with antique ornamental mirrors), and the staff always have plenty to gossip about. Pricey, but you get a better experience, and a better haircut, than Supercuts!
