I stopped going to church about 10 years ago. I felt like most people were there for the social event and were hypocrites. I broke up with my Christian girl friend and ended up marrying a militant agnostic. When I started dating her, my dad told me no good would come of it (he was right) and began to pray for me to return to church. I was a "C&E" Christian for most of the last 10 years. 2 Easters ago, I was planning on making my usual trip to my Dad's house for Easter, when everyone there got sick. I was just going to stay home, but a neighbor invited me to Meadowbrook, so I went to the church in a school cafeteria.
The music is what initially sucked me in. These folks know how to sing. While the songs were new to me, they were also infectious. The messages Pastor Scott delivers are heart-felt , insightful, thoughtful, and relevant to modern living. There's a good mix of material for both "seekers" and believers. It's awesome that people who are not sure can still feel welcome and accepted while they decide. It's very different.
Over the last few years, I've formed close bonds with some of the men in my "share group" that meets for breakfast once a week. The people in the church are genuine in their faith and friendships. They have surrounded me and comforted me over the course of my ex-wife's betrayal and cold, calculated divorce proceedings. The things I've experienced over the last several months would seem to be miracles beyond explanation and I am thankful to have found a place like this. I believe my dad's prayers from 10 years ago have been answered.
If you've considered checking out a church, you could do much worse.
