Rooftop Bar -- very impressive view, worth any other hassle.
We're here on vacation to taste wine, but I've got to say I'd happily spend most of the time here enjoying the view, eating the fine Communication Breakdown Burger, and talking to the great waitstaff.
And they sell cigars!
What's not to like?
This is a really neat place to go as far as the building and general area but the service is pretty bad. I've been here a few times and there have been a few times where I have had to hunt down a server after very long waits. Then had to wait even longer than before for an order. It shouldn't take close to three hours to pop in for a beer and microveable personal tiny pizza. I keep telling myself that they're probably under staffed but everytime I go back same old song.
McMenamins Food isn't bad but i think its a a little below par for a McMenamins. Same for the service. However, The beer is great. Also I love how McMenamins restores old buildings and turns them in to amazing restaurants. This one in particular has great rooftop bar will amazing views of Yamhill Counties wine country. The restored building alone makes Hotel Oregon a must see if you are in Mcminnville.
There is a cellar bar, a ground floor restaurant, and a roof top deck. We opted for the very popular roof top deck and found out that "school's back in town" so we sequestered our curmudgeonly selves away from the collegiate hoopla and tried not to stare at the kid with a random amount of bling around his neck.
The spinach salad was way overdressed and plain old not very good, the personal pizza was fine, and the turkey sandwich was downright gross. It's a good thing I chose to get tator tots or the night would have been ruined. Tator tots save the day!
The food is just okay, with standard barfood, pizza, burgers, etc. I was disappointed that they only serve their own wines, Edgefield, by the glass. I sampled several and they were terrible other than the riesling. For what looks like a decent restaurant in the Oregon wine country, the wine program, or lack thereof, really sucks. The space is nice, situated in an old hotel, and the rooftop bar is unique. Unfortunately they couldn't resist putting a television in the main dining room/bar, where the tables are littered with heaps of McMenamins flyers. Most of the servers are attentive, but some will ignore or forget you completely. You can tell you are in a very corporate environment despite the kitschy decor. I know this company can do a lot better. A jukebox would be nice.
Remember those nights you would sneak
onto the roof of your house?
Smoke a joint? Drink a beer?
Stay up and talk all night with a best friend?
Go up there for some alone time - stare at the stars ...
All can be done at McMennamins Rooftop Bar -
minus the prying eyes and ears of your parents =)
(Unless your parents are there, too?!)
Thursdays, due to the thirstiness it associates with,
are the night to come out and play with the Linfield students.
The great art decorating the walls,
the architecture of the old building,
the lighting, the mood ...
But damn! The view from the bar upstairs is incredible!
It's a nice place, but still very casual =)
Good drinks, great beer, all reasonably priced.
A great restaurant downstairs boasts a tasty menu
full of burgers, pasta, appetizers and other delectable entrees.
And if you're feeling lucky? Rent a room.
(Ooh, you dirty, dirty boy.)
It's a hotel, too =)
Are you a rich yuppy? Do you like paying high prices for food and drink? If so this place maybe right up your alley. The McMenamins experience is great even if you aren't. The drinks are alright. The food is somewhat good and inexpensive.
If you're a drinker, this might be a great place to try for something new. They have a rooftop bar which is supposedly the tallest building in McMinnville. If you're into herb you'll appreciate the scenery... You'll see why.
Its a very laid back experience. Their drink prices are a little spendy. But you really pay for the environment over taste.
I decided to RachelRay it up on my vacation and "ask a local" where to go. I was directed here with the explicit instructions to 'try their Terminator Stout - it's amazing. The rest is pretty good." And, being the follower that I am, I went to McMenamin's Pub and had the Terminator Stout. It was in fact, amazing. A very smooth drinking beer with complex flavors. And enjoyed on the rooftop bar with a stellar view it was even better. Although the locals seemed to think it was too "humid" for outdoor dining (which is total crap if you've ever been to central Ohio in the summer).
The rest of the experience was pretty good. Not amazing, not great, but pretty good. Our waitress, a Beth Ditto knockoff, was pleasant and competent enough, but I would have enjoyed the experience more if she had covered a few Ditto tunes throughout the course of dinner. The decor and atmosphere of this place fits with the McMenamins style in the quaint town of McMinnville. The food was fine. I've eaten better, but I've also eaten much much worse.
I might have given the place four stars had the kitchen not screwed up our order and after waiting for them to fix it the waitress offered to microwave our food because we waited. Gross.
McMenamins always restores historic landmarks and turns them into something else, ie a schoolhouse that's now a pub and hotel. This is a great place to meet friends for a drink or dinner, with its restored glory and upstairs bar with outdoor roof seating. 3rd St. in Mac is very picturesque and there are plenty of shops to check out, make a day of it.
