Well, I made it back. I couldn't help myself, I had the same thing. The tuna melt. I thought maybe I had built it up so much in my mind and I would be disappointed. Boy was I wrong. It was just as great before. This time I also got a side of the home-made cole slaw, and it was awesome. I'm very, very picky about my cole-slaw, as I don't like mayo. This wasn't made with mayo and it was awesome.
I got dessert, their Bailey's cake, and it was also phenomenal. Once again, it came to about $25, with tip, and so it really can't be beat.
I think I've decided, this is my favorite restaurant in the whole world.
**Oh! They expanded! They added an entire other gorgeous room, complete with a bar! So nice!1 Previous Review: Show all »

The Ultimate Grilled Cheese
Sliced pears, smoked bacon, monterey jack cheese on homemade grilled cinnamon raisin bread.
It's worth returning to Pawling, NY just for this grilled cheese sandwich. I sat down for lunch on a Wednesday afternoon and the place was bumping.
They have menu items that fancy pubs try to pull off, but fail miserably. This place does not fail. I would have no problem getting a tuna steak, meatloaf, or a Kobe beef burger at McKinney & Doyle's. What a class act. -

This place is so good! The atmosphere is very cozy. The food was delicious. I got the almond French toast which was awesome. I will definitely be coming back here when we are in town.

Love the new Makeover guys!!!
I'm a big fan of their weekend brunch and cinnamon buns. Will comment more on their menu when I try them for dinner.
The place really looks great. -

Staying in a B&B nearby, we ate there twice, brunch and a take out dinner.
The classic NYC bagel and lox with cream cheese, capers, onions and tomatoes, was just perfect -- and very generous. We ate at the beautiful wood and granite bar.
Later that day we wanted take out, and they really came through with a Caesar salad, with filet mignon, chicken breast, and grilled shrimp. The meat was packaged separately so it stayed warm without wilting the salad. We also had two lovely soups, and they included a small dinner loaf of their great homemade bread. We had our bicycles and they let us relax outside and took care of us quickly.
What a lovely place!! From the folks we saw as we were sitting with our bikes outside, it seems this a destination for a lot of locals who seem to know each other, and the staff. -

Every time I'm in upstate NY, this is a go to stop. Love love love the feel of the restaurant, love the prices, love the food, and the service is great every time we come.

Novato, CA
Great soy lattes and bakery fare at breakfast time. Dinner, sit in back behind the bar where it's quiet and cozy. Very good salads, killer Caesars, and good seafood. And the wine list is pretty decent...though they could represent California a little more.

Pawling, NY
We eat here every couple of weeks for brunch. Even though we have never been here for dinner their bakery and huevos rancheros is tremendous for breakfast or brunch. The place is packed every weekend morning so get there early and have a cup of their delicious coffee while you wait for a table. it is well worth it.
It is right across from the Pawling train station. -

I've been going to this place since it opened years ago and it was just a little bakery on corner. I believe it was called "the Corner Bakery." In all these years, probably almost 20, it has yet to disappoint. That's along time to keep me consistently happy.

Great bakery and cake selection. Their Mandarin Orange Cake
& Raspberry Mousse Cake are amazing. I heard they do outstanding wedding cakes as well. Its fairly small so I recommend calling beforehand to make a reservation, especially for weekend brunch. Their sandwiches, pancakes and hash are all delish. Great little find in this small town. -

New York, NY
I have only been here for brunch, but I have always enjoyed it. Prepare for a wait on weekends though. Country small-town feel and the servers like to favor the locals.
My absolute favorite soup in the world is the Jerry Aaron's favorite, which is a creamy leek soup with big pieces of leek, grilled shrimp and seared, caramelized scallops. Incredibly rich, but worth it.
The prices on the menu are very reasonable (at least compared to the bloodsport that is the Manhattan Brunch scene).
The breakfasts, whether it is the almond french toast, waffles with peaches and cream, innovative omelets, etc. are very tasty. The lunch-type sandwiches or salads also do not disappoint.Listed in: Dutchess County

A friend recommended this place and we went there last night. I was amazed! Nice cosy atmosphere. Great value for the food that you get. Fresh baked loaf of bread is served when you get there, and the salad that comes with the entrees is the BEST I've had! Our server was friendly and kept our glasses full of drinks :P
I got the chicken with the sacred basil sauce YUM! And my honey got the pork schnitzel- super flavorful.
Highly recommend! We wished we had left room for dessert. -

Their food is consistently good, and their preparation of Hudon Valley Brook Trout with brown butter, lemon segments and capers is the first freshwater fish dish that I've had which I have truly enjoyed. The lobster risotto is luxurious and well worth the trip in itself. Oh, and the coconut cream pie? Heavenly - I thought I was back in sunny Florida despite the snow and ice outside.

I couldn't wait to write this review. What a beautiful country chic nyc village flair cafe-restaurant. We came here for breakfast. It was gourmet. Coffee was great. Every order that came out made my mouth water. This place is run by chefs not grill cooks. Can't wait to come back.

This is hands-down the best restaurant in Pawling. The food is delicious and the wait staff is fast and happy. There are several things on the menu that look really good - it is hard to decide. It has great character and ambience. Perfect for a date night, or a night out with good friends. They have a few fun events - like half price wine nights. It is right in the center of town, so it has a fun, local feel.
The take-out section leaves a bit to be desired (though they are expanding winter 2010). The small case always has some mystery sign-less salads, and it seems to always be fogged over. The baked goods look top-notch though. Self-serve coffee would be a bonus, having someone else add your milk is awkward. Everyone wants it a little different. For take-out, I think Dutch Oven is a better option - but this is definitely the spot for sit-down. -

We ate here last week for our anniversary. Everything was excellent, even the house salad. It had a very tasty goat cheese-and-cider vinegar dressing, unusual but very good. Steaming fresh bread to die for. Lobster risotto was tasty if a bit heavy, dh had sliced duck breast and loved it. Desserts are amazing...try the warm bread pudding....omg. Would definitely go back!

Great place! The food is wonderful and they have quite a nice wine list, especially for the Hudson Valley. Have Andrew suggest one of there cocktails! Be careful, Irish pours. They can get very busy but they are adding more space, yeah! Try the Jerry Arons soup! Worth a drive.

M&K have been doing it right for years. The atmosphere is perfectly set with its wood floors, high-back seating, brick walls, tall windows & display of local artist photographs & paintings. The coffee consigliore that gather each morning to sip and share stories will attest that locals love this place and visitors leave charmed and satisfied. Unlike other business that try to be diverse M&K hits the mark as a 100% bakery and 100% restaurant. There's even a small bar with a nice selection of vino. Owner/Chef Shannon McKinney continues to keep quality and service high after many delicious years. One of the best brunch's served and well priced for the quality, taste & plate. Lunch & Dinner also very good. Prepared salads, soups and meals to go at the counter. Must try: "Jerry Aron's Favorite" - made to order shrimp and scallops in a seasoned sauterne leek cream.

Patterson, NY
LOVE this place! I've been a fan for the last 6 years and I've never been disappointed. The dinner menu is creative and has fresh ingredients based on the season. My current favorites are the Hudson Valley brook trout and the grilled pork tenderloin. The grilled thai shrimp and the crispy calamari are wonderful appetizers and are enough to share. For a less expensive experience they have Tuesday night Pub night. A different menu with more casual fare. The wait staff are friendly and warm. Make a reservation!

One of my favorite restaurants. Everything I've ever eaten here is wonderful and, of course, they have fantastic baked goods. Great selection of Specials. Wait staff is friendly and attentive. The only downside is that it's not bigger - if you don't make a reservation, you might be waiting for a quite a while on the weekend! Always a good sign.

Manhattan, NY
Not having a great deal of experience with Pawling, I was very pleasantly surprised with both the town and McKinney and Doyle.
I would like to take a moment to touch on the cinnamon-glazed pecans in the house salad. They were pretty amazing. Thank you for indulging me.
All of the mains were outstanding with my favorite of the group being the steak au povre (the other two being calf liver which was cooked perfectly, and lobster risotto which was delicious but a bit too rich for me). They have a great page on the wine list: 30 under $30 which are surprisingly good wines for that price point at a restaurant.
Why didn't you get 5 stars, McKinney and Doyle? There was something about the service that was just off. The back-server was very courteous and promptly attended to us, but the main server acted like an automaton. When another couple came over and was chatting with the couple I was with (and they do tend to chat up a storm), our server sort of jumped in and tried to start the ordering process anyway. Which was kind of inappropriate. Also throughout the meal when she would check on us, she wouldn't even wait for a sentence to end before her very scripted, "Excuse the interruption, but how is everything so far?" It's not that she was discorteous or impolite (well maybe a little), but its as if we were simply mannequins at a hospitality training school and she was trying to remember the answers to her final exam. It may sound like a small nitpicky thing but it was just so overwhelmingly bizarre that it had to be noted.
In conclusion, excellent food and cool decor. It definitely had that old-timey small town feel that so many restaurants fail to pull off successfully. -

Reading, PA
A favorite in my hometown! Started out as a bakery years ago and grew into a fine restaurant with food and baked goods that were a step above. Really good food without the fine food price. Small, cozy eatery with bakery attached means fresh baked goods and breads. A gem within a small town.

Great surprise hidden off the beaten track. We've eaten there twice now, the second time going well out of our way and we enjoyed everything we tried both times. Awesome rack of lamb, pastries. Nice wine list. Good value.
