My cowrkers and I decided to try this place out for their famous happy hour deal last night (Tuesday) after work. We got there around 5pm (we work a block away) and sat at one of their tables at the bar. When we got there, there were only 2 tables left so def try to get there at least by 5 if you want a seat (bar area got packed by 5:30).
Bar menu was amazing. $2 for spinach dip and $3 for a burger? What can beat that? Their food was just ok.. mediocre.. nothing too great. Make sure you get their spinach dip and parmesan fries though and I don't recommend their fish tacos or fried tomatoes.
We didn't end up going w/ their $5 martini special but rather having 4 beers and a shot of patron. Total came to $35 a head - which you won't easily find in the city... especially for the amount of food and drinks that we consumed.
Def will be back .. only for their happy hour though.
in a move that puts all of midtown west at risk by effectively removing my reason to live, they have killed $5 martini tuesdays. it's pretty difficult to control my pulsing desire to murder everyone that i work with on a normal basis, and martini tuesdays have basically been the mitigating factor between me and homicidal rage through the beginning part of the week.
when one has a tendency toward sociopathic violence, it is not even remotely therapeutic to leave the office saying "i need a vodka-soda the size of my head". that sentence does nothing to soothe my burning desire to... well... burn it down. ALL OF IT.
also, they have changed the artichoke dip, again without consulting with me.
good thing the ahi tuna skewers and burgers are still cheap and delicious.

Where do I start? Let's just say that I had so much hope when we walked in here.
Went here for dinner with friends. None of us were really taken with our meals. They were small portions with large NYC price tags and little flavor -- more meant for tourists who think they might be in for a "wonderful" NY dining experience. For me, NO THANKS -- if you want to take me for seafood, take me to City Island where the prices might be slightly (not much), better, the amibance might be nicer and less tourists!
We even passed on desert here.
The calamari's pretty good. I had salmon. The place is huge, has a nice atmosphere. I am curious as to whether or not this place has happy hour as one reviewer wrote. It might just make me add another star. Seafood's good. It's just a tad expensive, that's all. This is weird because the ocean is a dirty place, and we're eating the dirty animals that come from it. Haha!
Happy hour is incredible! The staff in courteous and friendly! You would never expect a white table clothed establishment to have a special like this, but it doesn't even stop there.
It's a nice day out right? Why not sit outside on the patio and enjoy the same happy hour specials.
If you are in the area, stop in and try it out. A quarter pound cheeseburger for $2.95? Buffalo wings $3.95? Can't go wrong!
Its all about the $1,99 Happy Hour menu. Where else can you get a cheese burger and fries for $1.99 while savoring a glass of Pinot Noir?
If you can't find something to eat on the daily 3:30-6:30p menu shame on you.
Get there early before the 5 O'Clock crowd
My boyfriend and I went to McCormick and Schmick's because I received a $20 coupon from Alaska Airlines last Christmas (snowstorm... don't ask...).
Anyway, it was only good until Mar. 31, so last weekend we zipped on over to take advantage of it. Of course, the coupon only did some good because we ended up splurging so we didn't really save any money.
Our appetizers were the corn chowder and the shrimp cocktails, which were dee-lish! They only gave us 5 shrimps, though, which I hate because it's like "hello - there's 2 of us? Would it kill you to make it an even number?" Anyway, they were great.
For our appetizers, I got the Catfish Jambalya, which was spicy, but yummy. I'm not a huge catfish fan - but my boyfriend is, so he definitely enjoyed it! He got the salmon fettuccine, with asparagus and artichoke, which I loved. It's a good thing we have the same tastes!
For dessert, we got the upside down apple pie with vanilla and cinnamon ice cream. I was totally stuffed after dinner, but what I did have tasted great.
Despite the fact it's a chain, it doesn't feel like a chain. It's definitely got an upscale feel.
Downsides: Uh, it's not *that* cheap, despite the fact I made reservations they put us by the kitchen (which I HATE) and the waiter was hard to understand. He also initially gave us the wrong receipt, and then came back after running our coupon with the right receipt, but without the coupon discount. Waiting for him to fix his error was annoying, but I certainly don't think it's a common occurrence.
We definitely plan to go back, though probably with parental units or someone with deeper pockets than our own. For the money, there are better and more unique places in NYC to go, but if you are in midtown and want reliable, yummy seafood, McCormick and Schmick's should definitely be at the top of your list.
Had the crab chowder that actually was loaded with crab meat. It was very spicy, which I prefer.
We then had the whole Branzino (I think that's the way you spell it), which is a light and tender fish. It was prepared by removing the bones (how the hell do they do that?) Filling it with an assortment of sun dried tomatoes, onions and herbs and then pan sautéed to a turn. The fish had the head on also which my SO taught me how to eat. Never thought I would, but glad I did.
It's a little expensive here, but the quality lives up to the price. The service was flawless and the manager even came by to ask us about everything.
I guess you get what you pay for, especially when it comes to service.
I get the whole chain thing but for what it is, it's done well. The 3 stars are more for the after work scene - as the bar is pretty hopping and the appetizers are mmm mmmm gooood. I've had the shrimp and the salad here and both were cool. I've gone and sat at the bar a few times and the staff has always been very cool and pretty hilarious at times.
I don't feel qualified enough to discuss the food as I've only had a few meals and I feel like people throw around 1 stars or 5 stars way too easily. Test her out with a drink, you may just come back. . . .
Knocked off two stars for mediocre waiter service. I expect better service when oysters are involved. I mean, the two go hand in hand unless you are buying them from a cart. Right?
However. Dears. If you like seafood, with a side of seafood and garnished with seafood on top? This is the place for you. Its pretty good.
I recommend mussels if you like that sort of thing. 10 bucks and in a heavenly sauce.
If it is nice out - sit outdoors. Watch the people go by and wave your fork at them.
Didn't have the dessert, but there's an interesting tray that comes by and there's something called a "berry bag" - I kid you not.
My sister insisted on coming here for lunch because she heard rave reviews and we love seafood. I never let her chose where we go to eat anymore. She thinks City Crab (pronounced Shitty Crab) is also worth the money. NOT!
We got a bottle of white wine and some apps to start with. The manilla clams and fried calamari. They were nothing special and only average tasting. She ordered the Lobster roll but received lobster ravioli. After the mistake was acknowledged, she got her order half an hour later (how long does it take to make a lobster roll?). Which contained less than half a lobster in it. She only ate the inside as the bun it was served in was overly large for the fillings. I ordered the Salmon Penne asparagus and artichoke in a pesto cream sauce. It was swimming in it's own pool of oil and the salmon didn't taste fresh nor was it seasoned. I took remaining 3/4 of my meal back to work but never intended on eating it. What a waste of money! The only thing we did finish was the bottle of white wine!
wow....sooo disgusting. Seafood not fresh, service pushy and mediocre desserts to finish. No ambience.
I know it's a fish restaurant and steakhouse, but does it really have to smell like the seafood section of the supermarket? I had the mussels, endive salad, salmon on a cedar plank, and cheesecake. I also had a bite of the crusted sole and chocolate velvet cake. The mussels were chewy and the wine broth tasted like it was scooped out of the Atlantic. The salmon was flavorless and completely under seasoned. (That must be why they keep salt & pepper on the table.)
The endive salad was tasty and both desserts were good for pre-packaged, thawed cakes. The service was attentive although our waiter seemed to compliment everything we ordered. I wish she was honest with us and told us to head for zee hills. We pretty much ordered the cheapest things on the menu. Two (pre-fix) meals with one drink each cost $92.00 plus tip. Everything else there is very overpriced and only a few of them are actually edible.
Watch out heading for the WC downstairs! The staircase leading to the toilet is dark and covered in carpeting.
O.M.G. I have found my happy place. And it's a chain! Aaaaaaauuuuuugggggghhhhhh!
Welcome to happy hour(s) at McCormick and Schmicks. 4-6:30, 9-11 ( I think)
THE REASON HAPPY HOUR ROCKS HERE:
$1 oysters and littlenecks. $1.95 burger with fries, spin/art dip, brie with roasted garlic and toasty toasts, mac and cheese, chicken wings, etc. other yummy options. Food is great. Food is high class. Food is cheap as hell.
Get a great dinner for basically free, and spend your money on beverages.
McCormick and Schmick's: The way life should be.
I used to go to the one in Boston, both for nice dinners out and happy hour. I had totally forgotten about how great their menu is (and how glorious their happy hour food menu is) until I saw it listed when this afternoon on a whim I decided I wanted oysters in midtown. Best impulse ever.
Seafood is their specialty, and since they have high turnover, and are buying on a large scale, the seafood is top notch. The selection is huge and varies daily. It's not the most exciting food, but it is fresh, well prepared, and worth the price. You can get pretty much anything prepared how you want it. Great for picky eaters.
Though drinks are on the expensive side - $10 for a basic mixed drink - the wine menu is pretty good, and has a good range of price points.
And, they have a lot of dark wood and classy but cozy booths, a big downstairs area that could handle large groups, and a little bit of sidewalk seating - if dining on 52nd street is your thing.
Totally a perfect place for dinner before a movie at the Ziegfield!
"But it's a chain" my colleague protested. How could I possibly like the food there?
So what if it is a chain? People make such a big f***ing deal if a restaurant is a chain or not.
My ma and sister were in town, so my wife and I took them to lunch here. I had been to M & S in DC and I liked it enough to try it again.
Decor is very dark and old school woody (hmm, sounds like something George Bush Sr gets when Barbara is in a French maid outfit). Downstairs has booths that actually have a curtain you can pull across for privacy, in case you are courting your best gal, someone else's wife, or about to arrange a hit.
Ma and wife had yellowfin tuna, sister had mahi-mahi and I had catfish. Ironically, I liked the catfish the least (little flavor - even for catfish -- and too salty) while the tuna was surprisingly flavorful and cooked through without being dried out. Dessert tray looked tempting but we were all too full.
Our waiter was superb. Tipped him well.
I've always had positive experiences here. It's hard to find good seafood in NYC, and the food here is always decent.
I think they change their menu pretty regularly. But the shrimp cocktail I tried was fresh and delicious.
Typical restaurant happy hour although awkward hours (430-630PM and 9-11PM). Crowded bar area with scattered tables and stools. Good food, in line with M & S's regular menu. Happy Hour prices for food, not drinks. A variety of fun-sounding drinks -- next time I'd ditch the bottle of light beer and opt for something exciting for a couple bucks more.
THIS IS A REVIEW FOR ANGELO & MAXIES STEAKHOUSE... I put it there when I wrote it. Somehow it got assigned to McCormick & Schmicks Seafood in the last few weeks... which I've never been to.
Great steakhouse - run like a factory.
It's noisy, it's busy and it's good. Mushrooms and onions on filet: how can you go wrong?
The mason jar martini's a very strong drink,
only have one at the most,
two and you're under the table,
three and you're under the host!
This place is so sad. It's like the tubby kid who is obsessed with Pokemon at the age of 17 and wears pleated twill shorts up to his armpits. I don't know exactly why this is. Probably because it's expensive and mediocre and located on that desolate stretch of Sixth Avenue where locals will only go if they're paid to (and tourists just don't know any better). For around the same price, you could probably have some of the best seafood in NYC. Instead, what you get is a slightly more upscale Red Lobster. Which is even sadder than actual Red Lobster.
Two stars because, hey, their specialty being seafood, at least I didn't get sick from eating there. It definitely could have been worse.
Great place for great steak. Reasonablely priced steak that is. gets crowed around dinner time, but lunch is pretty empty and spacy. The decor is cute especially with the cows all around.
Suprisingly their best steak for me, is their ribeye. Blackened is good, as well as the normal way they serve it. Their cream spinich is amazing. Mostly all their side are good.
The wait staff there is friendly and knowledgable about the cuts of steak and sides. They are kid friendly as well.
The desserts there are very good as well. Their cappichino is made to perfection. They even heat the mugs so the liquid remains the same consistency and they don't burn the coffee!
A fun place to go. A lovely place to have steaks at and to enjoy with a few friends.
This is definitely for the seafood lover, to get appetizers, and some drinks.
I always get the oyster sampler; there's at least 5/6 kinds of yummy oysters two each. It never tastes fishy or smells bad, and I've been getting them for a while now.
Our dinner's usually okay, it's never excellent, so we just come here for appetizers like I said. Once we ordered the steak and fish, and it was okay. Sometimes the dishes taste like there's some type of zing or japanese style glaze on the food which I'm not a fan of.
The desserts are spectacular; there's not one flaw in the dessert menu. Everything is made fresh, especially the almond pecan tower (hollow) filled with ice cream. Soft, tender, cold, it melts in your mouth. There were 4 of us and we were fighting over it.
For the seafood lover: definitely try this place. Sit at the bar though, you'll have a more pleasant experience. The tables are spread apart and there's a lot of room when you sit on the high tables. I don't like the booths personally, they are too small and you feel trapped.
It's outrageous how many items are on the menu!
The cool teriaki glazed salmon was delicious.
-1 star for the server who was somewhat unattentive.
-1 The outdoor tables are great when there's good weather out. However, the tables are grated, so the condensation on the drinks will drip down on whatever is below.
Otherwise a surprising pleasant experience.
I've only been here for happy hour, but I must say, it may very well become one of my favorite after-work watering holes in the Rock Center area. The appetizer specials are insane (in a good way) and tasty, and the staff is very warm, friendly and accomodating.
Last night, a big serving (forgot how many ounces) of sauvignon blanc, a cosmo and three appetizers totalled to a ~$30 bill... Not too bad for Midtown.
Fellow Yelper Marisa B. tells me, "Steakhouse, mostly business crowd. Kinda pricey but good burgers." Guess I'm going to have to check it out sometime soon.
Great Steakhouse. We came here for a friend's birthday party, with about 6 people. It took a moment to get our table ready, so we ordered a drink at the bar. They have a great martini menu - some of the creations are really out there.
Once we sat down, we were treated to great steak. No vegetarians attended, and this was by design. Most of us ordered the New York Sirloin, which runs just under $30. We also got the spinach, the asparagus, and the onion strings. I thought that the steak was excellent, but that the sides could probably be missed. Dinner was not cheap ($65/person including a modestly priced bottle of wine), but is definitely worth it for a special occasion.
Its "okay"...nothing that inspired, but fairly so-so food. I had gotten some pasta with lobster and it tasted a bit too much like it came out of a jar, but the apps and dessert were spot on. My friend got a different dish and she was ecstatic over it....guess I should have gotten the same thing. Service was pleasant, but not nearly as consistent.
Very good dining- we went in the early evening before it got busy and the service was good. The salmon penne was really good as was my companion's red snapper. Crab cake was a good choice for appetizer, and my seared tuna was just right with a nice side of wasabi. Not a must-try when in NYC but a good safe option if you want seafood and don't have time to research local places. The bar looked nice and seemed to have a lot of local people stopping by after work.
Came here for happy hour tonight. Great deals. Appetizers are $1.95 - $3.95 with a two drink minimum. Spinach dip, cheeseburger, quesedilla, chicken satays, buffalo wings, seafood cake, and more. Very crowded. I haven't tried the main courses at this location, but others (in CA and Boston) have been good. Not great, but above average. I saw they have a prix fixe menu for $29.95 from 5 - 7pm. So if you're watching the wallet but want some seafood, try the prix frixe.
I have to concede that this is one of very few restaurants I trust. I take the waiter's recommendations, I want to know the chef's specials, and I am always willing to spend the money here, simply because none of the food itself is underwhelming. That is all I will say.
We came here after going to see "Chicago" on a Sunday night and it was a very quiet Sunday evening, as most Sunday night dinners are. Our server was excellent.. never rushed us (as sometimes servers do because we were his last table) and was very friendly. He was also very efficient and answered all of my questions and even squeezed in my last minute request for a second round of Carlsbad Blonde Oysters.. gosh they were yummy! I paired my oysters with the Sonoma Cutrer and it was surprisingly refreshing as I thought this chardonnay would be more oaky. The trio of creme brulees were tasty, too... highly suggest it. Anyway, I had a great time with my beau at this classy old joint and felt like a million bucks before heading down to Lotus to party!
I never thought I would enjoy a chain restaurant in Manhattan. However, MS's was decent. The atmosphere was nonchalant, with an after-work happy hour feel. Appetizers are consistently amazing, often outshining main courses. The pan-seared Ahi Tuna is a highlight of the menu. However, I would select another restaurant for dessert.
The two stars were mainly for the food. I didn't think this place was great at all. Maybe I should have had the filet Mignon or some other red meat dishes but I ordered the Scallop w /wild mushroom risotto. I can't help it...I LOVED anything with risotto. My friend ordered the 9 oz filet mignon, which surprisingly came with fried potatoes and vegetables. I thought that was a plus since most other steak houses have those items a la cart. The caesar salad was good with a very light favor, just enough to taste but not overpowering. The scallop tasted kinda raw and I hate the sandy and grindy feel of it. The risotto was overpowered by the seafood taste and the texture was hard. I don't know if it's was undercooked or not. I was disappointed with my meal. The dessert selections were average; ice cream sundae, peanut butter pie, lemon meringue, and a fruit cup. The server was stiff and didn't explain the menu too much. I will probably never come back here since there are so many steak places to choose from in NY. Shelly was way better. Total cost of the meal was 142 for above dishes w/ 2 glasses of wines and 2 desserts. The price was decent and ambiance was nice. It was convenient that we can walk-in without any reservation.
I can not say enough good things about McCormick and Schmick's. It is hard to believe it is a chain restaurant!! The menu chances on an almost daily basis so you can always try new things. It is unbelievable how fresh the seafood is.
